OP - Almost half of the population would be imprisoned, fairly equally men and women. All disorders (except PTSD and anxiety disorders) and all mental illnesses all combined. Most people aren't aware that someone they know is disordered or mentally ill. They may think of them as an asshole, a crazy fuck, or douchebag, a bitchy-witch, or selfish cunt, or whatever.

Most of us are unaware the person actually has a bonafide disorder or mental illness. For a few examples; my 55 year old cousin still doesn't know her mother (my aunt) is a sociopath and that one of our uncles is also a sociopath. My brother doesn't know our youngest sister is a narcissist. And my neighbor doesn't know her 26 year old daughter has Borderline Personality Disorder and has referred to her daughter as "her moody little witchy-poo." They think she is normal with a character flaw.

Like many of us, they think mental illness is someone running around naked shouting bizarre phrases, or storming into a public place pointing a weapon at the crowd. Unless the behaviors are frighteningly outrageous they don't think of them as disordered or mentally ill. That's why the half of the population, who really should be behind bars, aren't locked up.

One of my great aunts would be in jail. She abused her kids and most of them have little to no contact with her. But, in a way karma did catch up to her. She suffered a stroke in her mid 70s and has been wheelchair and bed bound since then. She has verbally abused employees in nursing homes and home care attendants over the years and it's backfired on her as those people file grievances which led to nursing homes and agencies terminating services to her.
