“She’s really that old-fashioned thing,” says Hilton Als, the Pulitzer Prize–winning critic for theNew Yorker. “She has an immense love of storytelling. When you think of her as an actor or a photographer, there’s not a lot of difference.” She’s also deeply connected to the soil itself. “When she plays Jewell Ivy in Countryor Mary Tyrone on Broadway, she knows the land better than anyone,” Als says. “That’s why this project is so great. It really speaks to her love of America in all its weirdness and loneliness and grandeur. Somebody should give her one of those presidential medals.”

American community. When Florence, who has been tossing the restaurant’s iceberg lettuce salad for more than seventy years, gets wind of Jessica’s impending arrival, she brings roses from her garden to our table. Though Jessica sometimes describes herself as a vegetarian, she never fails to succumb to the allure of the enormous steaks, cooked on the broiler just inside the front door, or of the hot tamales for which the restaurant is equally famous. This photo is of Arlicia Ross, a hot tamale roller and cook who is often in charge of the french fries, hand cut and dropped into the ancient black skillets that also produce the world’s best fried shrimp.

by Anonymousreply 6November 23, 2017 7:35 AM

Glad she is keeping busy. Pity she didn't learn to sing for "Sweet Dreams" as I would have.

by Anonymousreply 7November 23, 2017 8:09 AM

R7 Oh, M. You're such a fan of me...

Shall I pull out the myriad quotes?

by Anonymousreply 8November 23, 2017 8:21 AM

Other than that first photo, I don't much care for the composition of her photos.

R10 You sour mean thang! lol.

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2017 10:20 AM

Darling Meryl. We have been waiting a long time for you to learn how to sing. Before you start filming Mamma Mia 2 might be a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2017 10:31 AM

Jessica’s one of the greatest.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2017 11:10 AM

She's so pretentious. All that 'knowing the land' crap.

by Anonymousreply 15November 23, 2017 11:13 AM

Well that bored me to tears. What was the point? And what’s with the black & white photography? This isn’t the 1950s. Oh wait, it’s art forgive me.

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2017 11:16 AM

R15 That was Hilton Als' quote, darlin'.

R16 The point is that she's finishing work on her 4th book of photography.

Also, black and white photographs are...

Actually, n/m.

by Anonymousreply 17November 23, 2017 11:19 AM

Her photography is as predictable as her acting.

by Anonymousreply 18November 23, 2017 11:27 AM

R18 Gollum, is that you?

by Anonymousreply 19November 23, 2017 11:30 AM
