Lil auditioned for the role of Mother Jefferson but Zara Cully got the role instead. Would Lil have driven her tercel out to California? Movin’ on up!

Actually, Lil was offered the role of Mother Jefferson but Lil was frightened to drive so far in the Tercel. She asked Kathy Glass to ride along and Kathy turned her down cold. Unsure of where to turn next, Lil passed on the role.
And Zara Cully won.
BTW, Zara auditioned for the part of Viki in 1971 but she looked too young.

I didn't like how they would change a person's personality with no respect to history. Becky Lee was an ingenue. When they brought her back at Drew's mother, she was a villain. A good villainess (Cord's mother Maria, Gabrielle) never changes her spots.

Is it true that Paul Rauch wanted to replace Slee in 1984 with the "Where's The Beef" lady, Ms. Clara Bell? But after seeing Ms. Clara's impressive screen test it was decided that Clara was too young and fetching to pass for Slee's replacement, so they just kept Old Slee and signed her to another 3 year contract. Slee then went on to win her first emmy.
