What was the appeal of Charles Manson?

Was he like hung or something?

by Anonymousreply 9November 20, 2017 5:44 PM

He was a product of his era, the 60s/70s. No one would fall for his bullshit in the 80s.

He was a basic violent criminal, a poser and con man, who in his older years turned to pimping out homely, weak-willed hippy girls. His "cult" was really nothing more than a pimp's stable. He wanted violent revenge on someone, and it turned into the SHARON TATE murder. Nobody would remember any of this if somebrich Hollywood producer's pregnant trophy wife wasn't slaughtered along with those other people.

Don’t know if it’s true, but according to his groupies he was highly sexed and could get it up all the time. But who knows, they were brainwashed to think he was some type of paragon so maybe they said that to recruit for him. They pretty much worshipped him. He was a cult leader like Jim Jones. People like thatcattract needy people.

Did he ever take ownership or express remorse for those murders? He sure seemed to bask in the power and notoriety he thought it gave to him.

R2, it is spelt, "poseur". It is a French word.

The whole 'hippy' thing was a sham. Manson wasn't a hippy, he was a manipulative criminal years before he started his 'family' in California.

To say this creep ended the 'peace & love' era gives this insane sociopath way too much credit. Read Ed Sanders book The Family, it's a much better read than Helter Skelter. The fact that Ed was a founding member of a NYC underground rock band called The Fugs, gives a better insight to Manson's connection to music and his connection the Beach Boy Dennis Wilson.

All those people were essentially killed because Manson was a failure, mostly at being a musician.

He was attractive and charismatic in his youth according to a couple of documentaries I've seen. Both women and men fell under his spell. I'm sure all the Acid he was giving his clan didn't hurt. But he was a run of the mill career criminal who started stealing cars in his young teens. He was destined to end up in prison for life. Too bad he took so many down with him.

Think of who took off for Cafornia in the 60s to the Haight and to LA's Sunset Strip. Not Choirboys and girls. Teenaged runaways were the bulk of denizens of these areas. Now imagine you're a criminal. A rapist. A drug dealer. You see all these hungry looking kids pretending to be cool when they're really there because they have shitty home lives. Some were sexually abused by their fathers. Some were discarded when their mothers died of cancer and there fathers remarried. Some are mentally ill.

Predators can spot prey. Child kidnappers always took kids from broken homes or multiple "mixed families," where they may have been lost in the shuffle of stepfamilies. Charlie Manson was a rapist, drug dealer, thief. He sees these girls, goes up to them and says, "You're beautiful." She could be the ugliest girl in the world, but Manson knew what they wanted to hear. He told girls that their fathers didn't protect them enough and that he, Charlie, would always protect them.

The girls were homeless, hungry, on drugs. They didn't want to go home. They went with Charlie, who made them feel safe. When he had a bunch of girls, he told them they were a family. Don't be jealous of each other. We are all a big family that lives on love. That way, he got to have sex with all of the girls.

He was a very crafty person. He'd been in reform school and picked up all kinds of criminal tips and he'd learned how to survive. The hippie movement was dead by autumn 1967. All that was left were wannabes. They wanted to be a part of something. The girls heard about hippies who said they were all about love . They left their homes looking for a group of young people they could fit in with, and be a part of the things that were happening. The Beatles sang about love, love, love. The Beach Boys sang about Good Vibrations. The girls thought they'd found their guru and their new family.

Charlie got them to do criminal things by telling them that they were just being counterculture. They were stealing from the man. They met Dennis Wilson and other stars. Charlie had built a criminal organization with a bunch of misfit girls and boys. It worked well for a few years. They stole cars, sold drugs, robbed people. They loved being outlaws, like Bonnie& Clyde and Butch and Sundance. They believed they were badass renegades socking it to the establishment.
