Elijah Wood's Character In Lord of the Rings is Such an Insufferable Debbie Downer I Cannot Watch It

I think the Hobbit has some relief, but Wood's character in all the LOTR is so dour and sullen and heavy and such a total permanent joyless sulky downer through the entire series I such can't watch it. And that Samwise Gamge is no better. The first one is OK but by the third it is too much to deal with.

I agree. The sad face the whole time is not an incentive to watch again.

Peter Jackson turned Bilbo into a big worrywort, too, at least in the three (only three?) Hobbit movies.

Peter Jackson should be drowned in a bucket. Admittedly, a large bucket would be required.

I kind of agree.

But he's been great in Dirk Gently.

Awesome trilogy.

One of the greatest ever made. Elijah Wood is adorable and eminently relatable.

Yo go, Frodo!

Because Lord of the Rings is such an upbeat classic.

Girl, you watch LOTR for that piece of jewelry.

The hobbit trilogy was crap OP, and god knows I wanted to like it. You have terrible taste.

I kind of agree, though my partner and I still love to pull a LOTR marathon on at least one day over the holidays every year. Each time, we remark earlier upon how one-note the character is, how whiny and defeated he seems. Thank god for Gollum, some of the performances (the older guys, in particular: Noble, McKellan, the great Bernard Hill), and some fine music.

It's kind of hard to crack a smile when you're carrying an object that is the embodiment of evil on a quest which will likely take your life, especially when you know that failure will mean the end of the world as you know it. Seeing friends die right before your eyes doesn't help.

Strangely handsome man.

And yet, r11, the books don't leave you with the impression that Frodo is such a crybaby. By the time of Return of the King, he plays one note through every scene, culminating with some really inexusable bathos once he rids himself of the ring. From there, leading up to his departure with Gandalf, it's just puppy eyes and pouting.
