Have YOU ever taken an SSRI/SSNRI?

If you have why did you take it? Which one/ones have you taken?

I have taken prozac, zoloft, lexapro, and I tried wellbutrin but it made me feel as though I had stayed up all night drinking lots of coffee for 24-48 hours despite sleeping for 8-9 hours at night so I stopped taking it after 1-2 days. I have taken them for anxiety/mild depression when therapy, exercise, yoga/meditation, eating right, taking supplements-mainly fish oil, vitamin D, and a multi-vitamin did not work. I even had a period where I was self medicating with illegal drugs and no those did not work either.

by Anonymousreply 58January 18, 2018 9:40 PM

Get a therapist. That stuff is bad for your junk and your internal organs.

by Anonymousreply 1October 27, 2017 7:06 PM

Did you read the original post R1? Are you a doctor, or medical professional? They are not bad for your internal organs, it's not like PREP/Truvada or HIV meds which actually are really bad for your internal organs. I never had the sexual side effects either.

by Anonymousreply 2October 27, 2017 7:09 PM

Hi, I've taken several. You CANNOT stop after two days. Some drugs have side effects for a couple of days to a week and then disappear.

I felt fatigue when starting my new SNRI but hung in there. It went away after about a week, and the drug has pulled me out of an 18-month-long suicidal depression.

You must talk to your doctor about side effects that bother you. Don't discontinue drugs without consulting your doctor. And don't look for natural remedies. There are so many medications for depression now - something will work for you. But you may have to persevere a bit.

by Anonymousreply 3October 27, 2017 7:53 PM

Zoloft blissed me out but made me fat. Activating drugs like Wellbutrin, Effexor, and even Vyvanse (kind of off-label) work well for me. Everything else makes me sleepy.

by Anonymousreply 4October 27, 2017 8:32 PM

i was on lexapro and i lost a lot of hair and it didn't really help. i am now on cymbalta and i hope it helps. so far weirdest side effect has been a lot of sweating in my sleep.

by Anonymousreply 5October 27, 2017 8:45 PM

I do not take drugs. Even simple things like antibiotics are rare....I haven't even taken those since 2001.

by Anonymousreply 6October 27, 2017 8:49 PM

R6 = Another DL Idiot,

you know, the type who squats and takes a crap in every thread that has an empty spot, and then points at it and says, "I MADE A DOODY!" Nothing of interest, nothing of value, nothing of relevance, just the shit of a non-contributing mouth sucking up a bad diet.

by Anonymousreply 7October 27, 2017 8:53 PM

[quote] Are you a doctor, or medical professional?

No, I'm a patient under the care of one.

You want Cipralex ,as opposed to say, Zoloft, if you're going to go that route. I highly recommend you forgo the medication and get therapy.

In 2017, if a doctor doesn't want you to breed, they will hand you Zoloft.

by Anonymousreply 8October 27, 2017 9:38 PM

That sounds exactly like your own post R7. You described yourself well.

OP asked a question. I answered it honestly. Sorry you don't like that.

by Anonymousreply 9October 27, 2017 10:04 PM

Zoloft made me FAT but sex life still ok It makes my stomach burn if I eat it on a night empty stomach Sometimes get brain zaps

by Anonymousreply 10October 27, 2017 10:17 PM

Sounds like you had some sort of "brain zap" while composing your post, R10.

by Anonymousreply 11October 27, 2017 10:27 PM

Snap out of it!!

by Anonymousreply 12October 27, 2017 11:27 PM

At age 26, in 2006, I was having anxiety (horrible job and bf) and the doctor gave me Xanax and, inexplicably, Lexapro. Lexapro killed not only erections but any sexual desire at all.

I said to the doc, "I wasn't depressed before you gave me antidepressants but I am definitely depressed now that I can't have sex." And I'm more anxious that I'll lose my boyfriend.

He switched me to Zoloft and a chewable version of Xanax, called Niravam. The Zoloft still rendered me incapable of cumming but the desire came back.

In the end, I dropped the job and the boyfriend and I didn't need meds so much. (WARNING : Getting off alprazolam [Xanax, Niravam] isn't so easy. Much easier to to drop the job and the guy.)

by Anonymousreply 13October 28, 2017 4:03 AM

R8 I've taken both zoloft and lexapro/Cipralex, and I did not get any sexual side effects. I have seen multiple therapists both CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) mainly, and some Jungian, and none of the therapy worked for me, or kept working.

by Anonymousreply 14October 28, 2017 4:43 AM

I take Wellbutrin. For the first couple weeks, I felt a bit jittery and had a hard time sleeping. I eventually got past the initial side effects. It works well for me.

by Anonymousreply 15October 28, 2017 5:04 AM

I don't take prescription pills. Instead, I learn to deal with life's challenges without drugging myself.

by Anonymousreply 16October 28, 2017 5:06 AM

Fuck off R16.

by Anonymousreply 17October 28, 2017 5:20 AM

You need to go to a medical doctor (specialist), get your thyroid, testosterone, iron, etc check. Tell them you are extremely fatigued, depressed (and other symptoms) and they will run these test. Ask for them because anti depressants are NOT really working.

by Anonymousreply 18October 28, 2017 5:27 AM

No R17 YOU fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 19October 28, 2017 5:31 AM

R18 I did all of that before I ever took any of them.

by Anonymousreply 20October 28, 2017 5:42 AM

I'm not r17, but r19 YOU FUCK OFF.

by Anonymousreply 21October 28, 2017 10:53 AM

I took Lexapro for two years. All it did was make me fat, sweaty and sleepy. Oh and dead below the waist.

by Anonymousreply 22October 28, 2017 11:04 AM

I was on Zoloft. Made me impotent.

by Anonymousreply 23October 28, 2017 2:10 PM

"You CANNOT stop after two days. Some drugs have side effects for a couple of days to a week and then disappear."

OP smart move on stopping that Wellbutrin after 2 days. That happened to me - only I didn't stop it after 2 days. 7 years ago I started taking it for depression and I also thought it would help me quit smoking. (It's also the same drug as Zyban which is marketed for quitting smoking). The first couple days I couldn't sleep AT ALL. Then the following couple days I would just pace at night, became very anxious..then gradual hallucinations by day 4 and 5.....by day 6 I was in the ER with psychosis. I had wellbutrin induced psychosis.

Haven't taken a drug since! One of the scariest experiences in my life!

by Anonymousreply 24October 28, 2017 2:19 PM

r10 what do you mean by brain zaps? Like a tingling sensation behind your eyes?

by Anonymousreply 25October 28, 2017 2:20 PM

A low dose of amitryptaline (Endep) can work wonders for low-level depression. When I was on it (25mg a day) I would often catch myself feeling unaccountably happy for no reason. I also slept much better on it.

It didn't make me fat, either, although I've heard that at higher doses (100-200mg) it will cause weight gain. It's only needed at those doses to treat severe depression or psychosis, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 26October 28, 2017 2:29 PM

R21 YOU fucking FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 27October 29, 2017 7:00 AM

R27 MAKE ME FUCK OFF, TOUGH GUY. YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE FLUSHED YOU AND KEPT THE PLACENTA. OR BETTER YET, SWALLOWED.

by Anonymousreply 28October 31, 2017 9:46 PM

I came here to tell R19 to fuck off. What an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 29October 31, 2017 9:49 PM

I used to take Paxil. I knew about 6 months in that it was not only not working for me, it was making things far, far worse. Never had a suicidal thought in my life prior to taking it (I was placed on it for panic attacks); within 2 weeks, it had me incredibly suicidal and that did NOT go away. As for the physicality of how it felt? The first couple of days, I felt incredibly wired like I was on speed or something, but beyond that point, it had a boomerang effect and left me feeling very, very drugged out most of the time and just out of it, spacey, couldn't concentrate on much of anything, etc. My pupils were always dilated to saucers while on that. Yes, my doctor tried lowering the dose, no, it didn't help. The next 3 1/2 years were spent trying to get back off of it because apparently the withdrawals of that shit is the equivalent of trying to quit heroin. I did a lot better with cognitive behavior therapy than I ever did on medications, for what it's worth.

by Anonymousreply 30October 31, 2017 9:55 PM

I’ve taken a small daily dose of Celexa for 12 years now. No side effects.

by Anonymousreply 31October 31, 2017 10:17 PM

I take Celexa too, 20mg, and do well, no side effects. Does Lexapro really kill the sex drive?

by Anonymousreply 32October 31, 2017 10:46 PM

R32 In my case it killed the drive and even the ability to jack off.

by Anonymousreply 33November 1, 2017 11:12 AM

Thanks R33 good to know.

by Anonymousreply 34November 1, 2017 9:44 PM

R30 did paxil or coming off of it give you horrible effects? I know two people who had that happen to them when they took it but I guess they were on large doses and just stopped and did not taper down before quitting?

by Anonymousreply 35November 2, 2017 3:12 AM

Not having a sex drive is not actually a bad thing. Whenever I try to wean off SSRIs, my sex drive floods back and I feel incredibly restless. This is not as bad as the brain zaps of course, which I don't know if will ever go away. Antidepressants is both a blessing and a curse.

by Anonymousreply 36November 8, 2017 5:24 PM

Celexapaxilprofexxoroft usually does the trick for me. But Merlot and a Klonipin in a pinch.

by Anonymousreply 37November 8, 2017 5:36 PM

Yes. I'm on 10 mg Cipralex right now. I just turned 30 and I hate my life. Thank god I'm on anti-depressants.

by Anonymousreply 38November 8, 2017 5:46 PM

I took Paxil for about a year in the 90s. It took away the lows but I just felt numb all the time. I weaned myself off it over a month and just deal with low level depression. Not trying to dissuade anyone else from meds, I just didn't like it.

by Anonymousreply 39November 8, 2017 5:48 PM

I took Zoloft for about two years for depression. It worked very well on the depression, but it made me feel very "flat"; I lost my enthusiasms, my periodic obsessive bursts of interest in random topics, and my creative urges. It also killed my sex drive. Those things are all what make life enjoyable for me, so I tapered off of the Zoloft and eventually was able to quit entirely. (I'm lucky in that my depression was tied to life events, so eventually it passed.)

I've also tried Wellbutrin, which everyone said would make me thin and horny, but it did nothing at all.

by Anonymousreply 40November 8, 2017 6:05 PM

Long story short: With every antidepressant, you're going to have to decide if the benefits outweigh the side effects. If you're suffering from a severe, debilitating depression, you may need to accept there is a downside to the meds.

by Anonymousreply 41November 8, 2017 7:28 PM

I took Prozac when I dealt with some severe depression about 10 years ago. Later, I tried Welbutrin and I had the first severe allergic reaction of my life with welts everywhere, even on the bottom of my feet and on my palms. That was it for me and I turned to exercise, diet, and Vit. D. An herbal compound, mixed by a registered herbalist and made into tea, also helps when the anxiety hits. I know that the Prozac saved my life, but the sexual debilitation was too much and I stopped.

by Anonymousreply 42November 8, 2017 7:40 PM

R42 that happened to me with zoloft in college, it and therapy basically helped me a lot when I was suicidal but I did not like the sexual side effects and stopped it when I was feeling better. Do you remember what was in the herbal tea? Is it something you can buy in a store or make at home? Is it mainly chamomile and rooibos?

by Anonymousreply 43November 8, 2017 10:19 PM

i'm on Rexulti now and that doesn't work either none of them work nothing works!J@H#dsfjskfjdskfsf

by Anonymousreply 44January 15, 2018 7:41 PM

How long have you been taking it for R44?

by Anonymousreply 45January 16, 2018 3:28 PM

Yes, been taking it for 6 months now.

by Anonymousreply 46January 16, 2018 3:33 PM

What R41 said

by Anonymousreply 47January 16, 2018 3:39 PM

I take low doses of Wellbutrin (150mg) and Lexapro (10mg). It’s the starter dose. Doc tried to get me to double it to the regular dosage and I’m like nope, I’m fine with this. Works great for me without the nasty side effects that most people complain about, though even at 10mg Lexapro makes it a tad harder to ejaculate but I’m sure not complaining about that. 😂

by Anonymousreply 48January 16, 2018 3:41 PM

OP: that shit causes side-effects that fuck with your head beyond your initial problems. Depending on your issues and how severe they are, sometimes - natural remedies work better than the expensive shit pharma is pushing on you. Have you heard the litany of side-effects associated with every drug commercial? "This drug will treat your anxiety, but you may become psychotic or have a stroke!" I tried Anafranil, Prozac, Zanax, Luvox (No!!) for OCD with no relief, but when I cut out caffeine, the OCD goes away. It is just hard as hell to give up coffee (still working on it)!

by Anonymousreply 49January 16, 2018 3:42 PM

I've been taking Dypoxyflouridine (brand name Neuroplast) for about six months and have never felt better. No side effects that I can discern.

by Anonymousreply 50January 16, 2018 3:44 PM

[QUOTE]OP: that shit causes side-effects that fuck with your head beyond your initial problems.

You should state that this has been your own personal experience when you make such claims. For every person screaming about the bad side effects of medical treatment for depression, there’s a thousand people who were successfully treated and have no complaints.

by Anonymousreply 51January 16, 2018 3:49 PM

Prolonged use of SSRIs/SSNRIs causes psychotic breaks from reality. Look it up.

by Anonymousreply 52January 16, 2018 4:04 PM

How do we know that the medication is the cause of it? People who are subscribed these drugs tend to have a lot of problems with mental illness to begin with. How do we know that they wouldn’t have had psychotic breaks if they skipped the medication and just took a herbal supplement with a vegan diet? There’s plenty of people who have psychotic meltdowns after refusing medical treatment.

by Anonymousreply 53January 16, 2018 4:12 PM

[QUOTE]People who are subscribed these drugs

People who are prescribed* these drugs

by Anonymousreply 54January 16, 2018 4:13 PM

Prolonged use of these drugs induces lunacy.

by Anonymousreply 55January 16, 2018 4:19 PM

I think prolonged exposure to the disease of mental illness induces lunacy, potentially with or without the use of medication.

by Anonymousreply 56January 16, 2018 4:24 PM

I have had depression as long as I can remember -- even as a young child. Exercise helps me the most and I do take fish oil and limiting junk food helps.

Having said all of that, I am under a psychaitrist's care. She has dx me biopolar2 (I have never ever been manic, just bad bouts of depression throughout my whole life.) One of the hallmarks of biopolar2 people is they respond better to mood stabilizers than other anti-depressants. I have tried many categories of anti-deps, but it was the mood stabilizer that made the difference. And again, I have never had mania or psychosis, etc., just really bad spells of depression throughout my life, getting worse/longer as I got older.

So I would talk to your doc about different categories of meds, and unfortunately, it can take up to a month or so before you know if it will help. Good luck

by Anonymousreply 57January 16, 2018 5:52 PM

Thanks R57, I am seeing a new doctor as my old medical doctor retired. I asked him about a local psychiatrist, and he said how he could handle my medication. I take 75mg of zoloft, and do not really have any complaints except that I find it very difficult to stay asleep at night as I will get 5-6 hours of sleep, wake up, and then stay awake the entire day. This even happens on weekends. I take the zoloft at night before bed. I am not manic and have never had mania, hypomania, or psychosis.
