I just had some delicious green grapes. Sweet and crisp with a hint of vanilla.
My favorite fruit will always be Tim Gunn

I hate grapefruit. Aside from the taste, it can interact poorly with certain meds. I think it makes you burn, rather than tan, in the sun, too.
Whenever I have a glass of orange juice, I think: “Isn’t God grand!”
A strawberry is the only fruit with seeds on the outside.
The trees in seedless orange groves are all the results of grafts of branches that originated with one mutant tree that had no seeds.

Tropical fruits to me still always feel decadent and luxurious eating despite my having re-located to these sunnier warmer parts where they're often cheaply, even freely abundant and available.
Probably because I grew up in a temperate colder climate where fruit was shipped in and cold stored and so on.
When I first tasted a naturally ripened local banana, I knew what bananas were SUPPOSED to taste like.
It is like a supermarket hydroponically grown tomato will NEVER taste as ambrosial as vine/sun - ripened tomatoes do.
However, if it comes to tropical 'desert island' choice I'd have to say carambolas have the most evocative tongue limbering name and even the more prosaic identifier 'starfruit' says it all. They are one of the sexiest visually appealing fruits cut crossways too and jazz up any cut selection of plainer fruit effortlessly. Ripe ones make a sublime 'butter' too (as for lemon curds or 'butters').
A close second for similar reasons to starfruit for me are passionfruit. That flavour is all in the name and is generally the essence of 'tropical' for a reason.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | June 3, 2018 1:40 AM |
Passionfruit alone carries the famed dessert for a reason: the classic pairing of passionfruit pulp, (vanilla) chantilly cream and meringue.

I like really ripe organic golden pineapples from Whole Foods - but really ripe, like solidly golden on the outside - not green and gold. I like them room temp and/or chilled in the fridge after being prepared, so that they dehydrate the tiniest bit and are super sweet - well, the fruit towards the bottom of the pineapple is super sweet - the higher you go, the more sour (albeit still sweet) the fruit is.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 3, 2018 5:27 AM |
I’m in Australia - so some of the varieties of fruits you guys have mentioned we don’t have - or they’re very rare :(
But we do have - Kensington pride (also often known as Bowen) mangoes. When they’re in season - they are sublime.
Mangosteens are pretty wonderful too - but only see them rarely - and they’re terribly expensive.
When visiting friends in a Enzed - and if timing is good - they have fejoas- which are divine! As are custard apples here - which fejoas kind of remind me of.
Perfectly riipe and luscious nectarines and peaches whenbin season are hard to beat - and pineapple when it’s properly ripe is fantastic -
And yes to the posters who said passion fruit! They grew on vines over our back fence when I was a kid and have loved them since childhood...

I love avocados and fresh figs. Fresh figs aren't found too easily, here... and are expensive when you see them. It's worth it, though. The best, most plentiful figs were in France, when I went on a trip there. They were larger than the figs here... I ate them every day.

[quote] I like really ripe organic golden pineapples from Whole Foods
Pineapple has to be eaten within 24 hours of harvesting. The taste goes down dramatically and it cannot be transported well over long distances.
So unless you've eaten pineapple in Hawaii or the Philippines for instance, ripe from the plant, you have no idea just how delicious a fruit it is.
I imagine your cum taste improves dramatically accordingly.
