What's the Gay Story You Wish Hollywood Would Produce?

I'm sick of mopey, navel-gazing, gay themes in movies; I want to see a fun, bubble gum, gay rom-com! No edge, no darkness, just a light and uplifting 1h30min "boy meets boy, boy loses boy, boy finds boy" story like Hollywood churned out in droves in the '90s and noughties. I want a gay Notting Hill or The Proposal or Serendipity (don't judge) - 100% unadulterated treacle. I want a ridiculous set-up like a blind date or a crush on a co-worker or a chance meeting at a club that leads to love, but not before signals are crossed hilariously and encounters are misinterpreted uproariously. But most of all, I want a Hollywood story about how exciting it is to be young and gay and in-love.

What gay story do you wish Hollywood would tell?

Deserves to be told. Not enough people know.

Wasn't Glenn Burke involved with Tommy LaSorda's son?

Don't you mean "Driving Miss Lindsey"?

by Anonymousreply 1508/27/2017

Christian McLaughlin's "Sex Toys of the Gods". It's a late 90's novel about a music obsessed gayling who moves from Ohio to LA after college and falls in love with the husband of his Belinda Carlysle-esque in recovery idol when he ends up house sitting next to their Beverly Hills Manse..., and becomes her best buddy at the same time. Mix in shady producer/madams, a gorgon of a housesitting boss, a Broadway star trying to make it in Hollywood, a useless manager and her S&M obsessed client - plus Ex-lax spiked coffee enemas, copier sex, big dicks and over the top gay sex scenes (plus murder) and it becomes a must read. It would be the perfect basis for a Netflix or Amazon series.

by Anonymousreply 1608/27/2017

Ryan / Merv Griffin Story. Movie would be entitled: 'The Closeted Life of Merv the Perv. '

by Anonymousreply 1708/27/2017

Chuck Palahniuk's "Invisible Monsters"

Neil Bartlett's "Ready to Catch Him Should He Fall"

Gad Beck's "An Underground Life"

Katie Gilmartin's "Blackmail, My Love"

Jewelle Gomez' "The Gilda Stories"

Basically any interesting gay or lesbian novel with a good story and setting, and not completely tragic characters.

Oh, R22, you're gonna get raked over the coals for that by the legion of Looking haters.

by Anonymousreply 2308/27/2017

I always wanted to make one called "6 Million" about an aspiring actress called into CAA one day and offered six million to marry the gay star of a huge film franchise. She considers it, then turns down the offer -- and someone wants her dead. So she ends up on the run with gay actor who becomes like the action star he plays in the films and, of course, comes out at the end once they are both safe. A bit of "The Firm" but any other connection is total coincidence (er-hem, throat clear).

by Anonymousreply 2408/27/2017

I would like to see a script based upon George Chauncy's "Gay New York." I would love to see the transition from the 1890s "pansy" era to the more modern gay male of the 1920s.

A bio pic on the Harlem drag balls of the 20s & 30s

A bio of Radclyffe Hall.

A bio of Magnus Hirshfield set against a rising tide of Nazism

Aleisha Brevard bio. Early Transsexual movie star (in stealth). She did mainly B movies 1950s/60s.

Little Richard bio that is more honest about his gaiety

And none of these films would be tragic in tone. Positive, but honest depictions of our lgbt community.

R7's choices are great too.

"The William Haines Story" - top Hollywood movie star of silent into talkies era -- was #1 at box-office. He's openly gay and boss at MGM tells him to forgo his boyfriend and marry a woman or lose your career. Haines basically tells Mayer he'll give up his boyfriend if Mayer divorces his wife. End of movie career. But, he's besties with Joan Crawford, and he redecorates her house smashingly. Word gets around and he starts a second career as one of the top interior designers, designer to the stars. Plus he and his boyfriend are called by Crawford "the happiest couple in Hollywood". It's a great story!

I like the Dancer from the Dance idea, but Hollywood, since about 1985, just *can not* nail the 70s aesthetic and zeitgeist.

It's infuriating and perplexing. They get it wrong every time.

All kidding aside , I want to see a movie about a single elder gay who is not self loathing who is not trying to hang on to the last vestiges of youth. Who lives in a medium sized city in a fly over state, has a good sex life without resorting to using escorts or going to adult bookstores. Who has a decent job where he is respected and liked. Takes no anti - depressants . No eating disorders, no drug/alcohol addiction. In good shape , goes to the gym to workout , not cruise. Does not take steroids etc

by Anonymousreply 5008/28/2017

Whether Hollywood or the Brits (though the Brits would do a far better job), someone should make a film of Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty.

After a weekend of binge watching gay themed coming of age movies on Netflix I realized how many of them focus on the effeminate gay kid secretly crushing on and eventually getting the sports hero/ big man on campus. [quote]An action or adventure movie with a gay hero

Yes. Please.

Just do a cool, fun story but rather have the main protagonist be a straight guy like always have him be gay!

You don't need a story that revolves around his sexuality. Why can't a gay people just be a normal protagonist.

Making "gay movies/TV shows" aren't that hard. You can literally use the same script except rather than female love interests you have male love interests.

by Anonymousreply 6608/28/2017

I would love to see a docudrama on Walt Whitman.

by Anonymousreply 6908/28/2017

I'd love something like you describe, OP. But can we please have a gay story that isn't all tied up to going out to clubs and doing drugs? I'm so sick of that. That isn't my life and never has been. Can we have a gay love story with two guys who lead normal lives? Two professionals who aren't complete fuckups?

by Anonymousreply 7608/28/2017

A documentary about gay Kirk LeMoyne "Lem" Billings (April 15, 1916 – May 28, 1981) close friend of President John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family. Billings was a prep school roommate of Kennedy, an usher at his wedding and a campaigner for his successful 1960 presidential bid. Joseph Kennedy Sr. called him "my second son," and he sometimes acted as escort to several of the Kennedy women.

A redo of Man In An Orange Shirt, eliminating the crappy second half, expanding Part 1 into a feature length film and changing the ending so Michael changes his mind and runs off to the South of France with Thomas, with copious nudity.

Try the British A Beautiful Thing, although it might be too Euro-realistic for your liking. Another great and funny British coming of age film is Get Real although to be fair the main guy is crushing on a sports hero. Still, it's extremely well-made film and one of my favorite gay comedy dramas.

by Anonymousreply 9108/28/2017

I'd like to see a do-over on Alan Turing, with no whitewashing. I'd like it to play up the horrifying choice he was forced to make between prison and chemical castration, as well as the belated but still insufficient tributes to his accomplishment. But no exaggerations either, like portraying him as near autistic or even as a spy.

by Anonymousreply 9208/28/2017

Just finished reading Matthew Griffin's 'Hide', and found it very moving. It'd make a lovely film - like a gayer, sexier, sadder version of Haneke's 'Amour'. While some of the imagery and narration is a little overwrought at times, it would work beautifully on screen.

by Anonymousreply 9308/28/2017

"Boogie Nights" got it pretty damn close, R84. Write the Carr biopic and send it to PT Anderson. It's a great Oscar role for... who? Kevin Spacey if he puts on 100 pounds? Travolta? Who is overdue?

"Kevin Can Wait", is what I want to see, but have a happy spin on it. Mopey Kevin goes to a poetry convention, but literally runs into his old roommate Aaron. [quote]After a weekend of binge watching gay themed coming of age movies on Netflix I realized how many of them focus on the effeminate gay kid secretly crushing on and eventually getting the sports hero/ big man on campus.

Because they are peddling gay wish fulfillment. Many gay guys can relate to being the that effeminate closeted kid secretly crushing on the hot jock, so that is what they serve.

It is just like straight movies that have some nerdy, dweeb of a guy end up landing this super hot girl. They are peddling straight wish fulfillment to the audience.

I met him in 1992 r111.

He was a lot of fun, always horny, always on the lookout for younger "buddies" race unimportant. Smoked weed constantly, had an ongoing weight problem but managed to slim down when needed. He had a huge shower and it always started there. Big custom made bed, custom made sheets, often talked about getting a loft so he wouldn't have to worry about doorways. Very cuddly and talkative afterward.

I'd like to see a movie about Roddy McDowall dealing with the FBI when they seized his film collection. James Franco bio pic where he's young, dirty, sexy, and teaching and getting diplomas and fucking students and jet setting. Gets his heart broken. Exposes himself as a mixed bag of a artist with lots of shit and flashes of true art and also sometimes being seriously charming (he used to be).

by Anonymousreply 12008/29/2017

Having known many marginal artists who died of AIDS, I'd like too see a gritty but rather MUNDANE and NOT arty pic about how that usually played out. No myth making. Marginal performance talent like a John Sex and how it all stepped down to squalor.

Or maybe an artist like Martin Wong.

Or Arthur Russell.

Or an activist like Stephen Gendin. He was handsome and a hot fuck and charming so that could be a sexy movie even.

by Anonymousreply 12108/29/2017

I like the idea of a movie about John Sex.

Even better is the idea of a movie where Noël Coward is the main character instead of just a supporting role like that Julie Andrews musical that had Mr. Brady and Mr. Drummond in it.

r132 Milk has long been controversial in the gay community. The movie made him a gay saint and whitewashed his bio. Jonestown victims' families in particular do not look on him kindly.

The DL Trump Supporter!! insult for different opinions is getting ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 13408/30/2017

He wasn't responsible for Jonestown, except according to freepers. Families of Jonestown victims don't hold him responsible. Stop being retarded.

by Anonymousreply 13508/31/2017

Milk was a great movie and only lying assholes want to dirty Milks name. Stupid fucking assholes who don't understand that all human beings are flawed...their flaws do not take everything away from their good lives. So many right wing fuckheads in DL, it is rather sad.

by Anonymousreply 13608/31/2017

R131, Rimbaud died at 37 of cancer. He spent the last few years of his life as a slave trader in Africa.

by Anonymousreply 13708/31/2017

r135 Jim Jones was responsible for Jonestown, but there were people who could have investigated the Temple as the cult it was, and prevented them from fleeing to Guyana. And I'm not a retarded freeper for pointing out something written about by mainstream journalists and writers over the years. He did have an influence on the outcome, because he used them for his own political gain, as did Moscone, while ignoring critics. Any investigation would have revealed the truth, but they didn't want to look. Milk was an opportunist, and a complicated man who didn't deserve his fate.

by Anonymousreply 13808/31/2017

I'd love a good story on Rimbaud, including his later years.

A bio of photographer George Platt Lynes -- went to Paris, friends with Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, others. However, he was able to photograph full-frontals of Yul Brynner and Burt Lancaster before they were famous, dancers with American Ballet Theater and many others. But he knew he couldn't really do a public exhibition of the nudes at that time, and a lot of them were sent to the Kinsey Institute. Lots of opportunities for full-frontal roles for ambitious and uninhibited actors. Sex, nudity, photography, expatriate life in Paris, famous friend, upcoming nude actors, this has a lot of possibilities.

[italic]Milk[/italic] was a travesty. Letting Sean Penn play Harvey Milk would be like casting Ricky Schroder as Malcolm X.

Are there any gay films on netflix that are worth the time and trouble of watching? I watched one the other night and thought it was really pretty poor. It seems like most of them are amateurish and badly written.

I use a Zoom H6 for recoding sound. Most times I use a Canon 6D for video. This is my recent upgrade from a Canon 80D because it is an affordable full frame. I also have a Blackmagic cinema camera that I rarely use. A separate sound recorder makes all the difference. The camera mics are awful.

I'd love to see a movie about Carl Panzram, the seriously damaged gay criminal who was just getting started 100 years ago.

[bold]"In my lifetime I have murdered 21 human beings, I have committed thousands of burglaries, robberies, larcenies, arsons and, last but not least, I have committed sodomy on more than 1,000 male human beings. For all these things I am not in the least bit sorry".[/bold]

I'm intrigued especially about the gay angle and how it all happened. Did he have lovers or were they mostly rapes? It sounds like he was a total slag, probably both in and out of prison.

"In his autobiography, Panzram wrote that he was "rage personified" and that he would often rape men whom he had robbed. He was noted for his large stature and great physical strength—due to years of hard labor at Leavenworth and other prisons—which aided him in overpowering most men he encountered. He also engaged in vandalism and arson."

Wikipedia also says that while on death row he became friends with a guard, a man 10 years younger than him. At the time Panzram was in his late 30s. That could be the angle to approach Panzram's life and what he'd done earlier. Maybe he fell in love with the guard, if that was even possible for a man who was quite probably a sociopath.

Garrett Clayton could make a good Jean-Michel. NPH is old enough for the lead.

Anyone read Han Ong's Fixer Chao? It's about a young Filipino hustler enlisted by an embittered middle-aged man to scam NY's upper middle class by posing as a Feng Shui expert. The specific expertise can be updated but the clever detail is that the young man is instructed to study Feng Shui and offer the wrong advice so that just in case FS isn't bullshit, he'll have fucked over his clients by positioning the mirror so as to drain the soul, and so forth. The hustler's being gay is incidental but doesn't have to be. Fucking loved that book.

I'd love to see a film with white straight directors, a white female writer and straight white actors telling the story of a Black gay man murdered by his friends!

Oh, wiat.

by Anonymousreply 15809/02/2017

I'd love to see a film with a black, gay director (who is also the black, gay writer) telling the story of a young black gay boy who overcomes being mercilessly bullied to find some kind of love/redemption when he grows into a man.

Then I'd like that movie win the Oscar for best picture! Then I like to see old, straight, white Hollywood actors try to take that award away from them, but fail!

A Gay, Black movie on a shoestring budget with no-name actors (at the time), and it wins Best Picture!

Impossible, you say? Well, Impossible Things Are Happening Every Day!

by Anonymousreply 19309/05/2017

I would like to see a BB Mountain type story, but instead of cowboys, it would be a love story between 2 police officers. Both very straight acting, one has a girlfriend the other is married with kids. They are partnered up to work to clean up the community, but slowly, they discover they have mutual homosexual feelings for each other. Eventually they decide to come out, it obviously being harder for the older cop who has to tell his wife and children. The movie would also deal with how their department struggles to accept this situation or face societal backlash in an era of Black Lives Matter and gay acceptance. Channing Tatum could play the younger officer, and Matt Damon could play the older, married cop. Graphic male to male ass grinding sex scenes may push it to an R rating.

There will be a controversial scene where they have their first sexual encounter in one of the "shower" facilities. Eventually, Dieter, the German guard, is caught and is told if he personally murders his lover Ezra, their tryst will be forgotten. In the climactic scene of the movie, rather than killing his lover, Dieter points the gun at his own head and pulls the trigger. Another guard immediately steps in and kills Ezra. His body falls on top of Dieter and they lay dying together. Camera zooms out into an aerial view of the region showing Allied troops, who will eventually liberate the camp, just miles away. "Gay Space" During a year long space mission, two American astronauts help each other discover their true sexuality and fall deeply in love. Russian hackers get into the camera system and catch glimpses of them sharing tender moments which include plenty of open mouth kissing. They threaten to reveal the footage to the world unless the US Government pays them 100 million dollars. They refuse and the footage is made public. Once the two find out, they use their platform on the world stage to start a dialogue to the masses about homosexuality. The POTUS, loosely based on Trump is outraged and tells them to stop immediately or he will trash funding for future missions. The two decide they have only one choice, ask the hackers to keep the feed open to the world and get down to some serious butt naked gravity free male to male hard ass grinding, in front of 5 billion viewers. The POTUS literally has a heart attack while watching the action as his trophy wife first lady continues to watch in fascination oblivious to the fact her out of shape hubby is on the floor being resuscitated by Secret Service men. He comes to while one of the agents is giving him mouth to mouth. He then faints after realizing he had another man's mouth over his. Nice little comedy bit thrown in. When the astronauts come home, they are welcomed by the gay community as true heroes and given their own parade -pride style of course. Yes. I want to see this movie!

Not needed. We need to have gay protagonists that aren't hiding the fact that they're men who are attracted to men or visa versa for the ladies. No closet. No AIDS. No homophobia. No stereotypes unless straight/bisexual characters share them. Real world gay; not circuit party gay.

I've been watching CBS's sci-fi-esque drama SALVATION this summer. I was thinking how nice it would be if the two male leads were gay, falling in love as they save the world.

OTOH, I always like coming out stories. They're what distinguish us from the rest of the world.

by Anonymousreply 23409/07/2017

(R230) You have a great imagination, but Hollywood would never produce the space story. It sounds like it deserves and X rating at least which has been a box office kiss of death for the last few decades. I could see this being produced by some eccentric European filmmaker who would want this to be a big middle finger to the status quo. Anything done right could work, I guess. The cop movie wouldn't work for the fact that homophobic cops across America would boycott the movie and make it a political issue so people on the right would jump in and spoil the fun for everybody. I do like the idea of ultra straight so called he men coming out. Many are closet cases and I like seeing them get called out on their hypocrisy. The cops that would be leading the charge against the movie would be the ultra macho straight acting closet cases that are married and have kids. This movie would hit too close to home for them to handle. Oh, the irony.

by Anonymousreply 23509/09/2017

Dave Pallone story BY FAR! They could use CGI and technology to create ballparks (especially because they only need the home plate and backdrop and pitcher's mound for the most part. It's not as if he was a star player in the outfield or something. He had affairs with some fairly big "names" as well in the league. There'd be some hot steel buns in the flick, at the very least.
