The story is kind of sad.
The Rise and Fall of Liz Smith
|by Anonymous||reply 185||08/03/2017|
Her fall into a pile of pussy?
|by Anonymous||reply 1||07/28/2017|
Fall? She just got older.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||07/28/2017|
Did she ever come out?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||07/28/2017|
She advised a virginal Elaine Stritch to have sex with Marlon Brando to keep him interested
What kind of stupid advice is that?
|by Anonymous||reply 4||07/28/2017|
That advice likely is taken out of context and sounds like a typical Stritch yarn.
She didn't fall, except when she broke her hip. She just aged and the newspaper business died and society dissolved into the festering soup we now smell simmering all around us.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||07/28/2017|
Fuck this nasty old dyke cunt. Didn't read the article. Hope she's withering away in some old age home in her piss-soaked diapers.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||07/28/2017|
Those eyebrows though...
|by Anonymous||reply 7||07/28/2017|
Shouldn't she be retired by now? Her columns were always so boring anyway
|by Anonymous||reply 8||07/28/2017|
She valued cheap celebrity fame and promoted Trump . Not much to support you at life's end with that value system.
That being said I wish she'll spill about every lady-lover she has knowledge of before she dies.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||07/28/2017|
She says that if she was younger, she'd be going after Michelle Obama!
Love the idea of a nonagenarian Liz lezzing it up with Michelle.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||07/28/2017|
She actually looks pretty good for mid 90's!
|by Anonymous||reply 11||07/28/2017|
She still adores Streisand.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||07/28/2017|
Newsflash - 94 year old lesbian who never came out and who fawned over Republican assholes is now wondering why the twitter and instagram world doesn't still find her fascinating!
Liz - retire - you are Methuselah old. Enjoy the years you have left - wtf is wrong with you? You're 94 - you're not going to stage a come back.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||07/28/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 14||07/28/2017|
Second stringer at best.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||07/28/2017|
She did come out in the article, though not directly.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||07/28/2017|
She is retired.
The article says she hasn't worked since 2009.
What I find strange is that in January she moved from her longtime apartment "above a Tex-Mex restaurant in Murray Hill" to an apartment on Park Avenue. Huh? What ancient lezzie left her a mint? Or what young lezzie is paying for her upkeep?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||07/28/2017|
She made a lot of money in her heyday.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||07/28/2017|
Read the article, Rose. Despite everything she wrote being anodyne and banal, she was the highest paid columnist in America. The previous apartment was in a luxury building, not a cold water walkup. Someone needs to give her a good shake. "Bitch you're 94: what did you expect?!" Some people just aren't prepared for old age. Even at THAT age. You need to have everything locked down and loaded for any sudden fall by 55, so you can survive well and reinvent yourself as needed. (Because the hard career knocks tend to arrive by then.) That includes your home paid off and a substantial retirement investment fund.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||07/29/2017|
From the article, I'm guessing that Cindy Adams isn't being paid to write for the NY Post.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||07/29/2017|
Is she still intimate "friends" with ABC News' Cynthia McFadden?
|by Anonymous||reply 21||07/29/2017|
She had a great run--and was at her peak during very heady times for the newspaper business, times which no one will ever see again.
But like Barbara Walters, she probably plied her trade longer than she should have. At some point one has to know when to take a bow, and get off the goddamn stage.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||07/29/2017|
Her column was the reason LuPone smashed down her dressing room. It wasn't Liz's fault but she broke the news.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||07/29/2017|
She still helps write a column for the New York Social Diary, to which you can subscribe, for free.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||07/29/2017|
Ah. And well-overpriced at that figure.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||07/29/2017|
The best thing about this piece is Rich Juzwiak's write-up on Jezebel. Shadows of Rich's mid-life crises:
What struck me as truly heartbreaking in this piece, though, is that Smith is savvy and intelligent enough to understand just how irrelevant she is. It’s one thing to be outside looking into a world you could only dream of belonging to; it’s a far sadder thing to be outside looking in at your former home.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||07/29/2017|
Her magnum opus seems to have been the ( Ivana ) Trump divorce in 1990 when she was already pushing 70, no wonder she hasn't come to terms with her loss of fame, most people her age would be looking back to a heyday 50 years prior.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||07/29/2017|
Didn't she come out on 60 MINUTES years ago? I date myself because IIRC, it was Mike Wallace who interviewed her. She minimized it by saying that she dated men.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||07/29/2017|
"Oh LIz, you're up to your ears in pussy, and everyone knows it!"
|by Anonymous||reply 29||07/29/2017|
Was that the interview where she said, 'If I could go back in time, I'd lez it up 24/7!'
|by Anonymous||reply 30||07/29/2017|
It was the interview where she talked about opening an all-you-can-eat whorehouse called the Snatch Barn.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||07/29/2017|
"Pussy Hut" was already trademarked elsewhere.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||07/29/2017|
Nothing really super sad about the article. Aging ain't for sissies and we all become shadows of our formal selves. She's had a great life.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||07/29/2017|
"Pussy Hut" was already trademarked elsewhere.
Yes, by Trump Hotels.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||07/29/2017|
I remember way back she implied that Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt were "involved." They'd made that awful movie "Pay It Forward" and according to her, were in what seemed to be a relationship. In other words, she was saying that Helen Hunt and Kevin Spacey were fucking! That was one of the stupidest things I'd ever read in a gossip column.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||07/29/2017|
Why would the NY Times even do an article about her? Do Millennials even know or care about her?
|by Anonymous||reply 36||07/29/2017|
A lot of us aren't millenials r36.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||07/29/2017|
At her height, she was still not as well known as Rona Barrett. Barrett understood her time was up and retired and left the public eye. I think that's surprising since she always seemed so desperate for recognition, but in the end, she knew how Hollywood worked.
Smith was known by many as a good old broad. She exposed John Simon after a show where he said something like he hoped all gays get AIDS. He not only apologized, he fell all over the next AIDS themed play he reviewed.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||07/29/2017|
Yes R9, she "supported Trump" so much that he threatened to buy her paper so he could fire her.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||07/29/2017|
She was no Hedda Hopper.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||07/29/2017|
She traded safe, corporate-entertainment-complex gossip, for decades--and made a nice living for herself doing it.
I'd say the internet--the real marketplace of ideas; and of gossip--had as much to do with her being made redundant, as anything.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||07/29/2017|
She once had a long column which went into detail, without naming him, about a very famous musical person in NY who had continuing trouble and had been paid of by his institution for being arrested for very, um, inappropriate behavior with young black boys. It was very clear who she was talking about.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||07/29/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 43||07/29/2017|
I'm guessing Leonard Bernstein, r43.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||07/29/2017|
"Once he had black, Lenny neva went back!"
|by Anonymous||reply 45||07/29/2017|
Just die already.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||07/29/2017|
Years ago I was in the Village and asked Liz Smith (whom I didn't recognize) for directions. She was probably in her 50s and she was extremely charming and attractive. Very warm tom boyish vibe. I'm sure many women fell for her.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||07/29/2017|
Liz Smith directed you to The Anvil?
|by Anonymous||reply 48||07/29/2017|
From the title of the article, I expected to learn that she was living in destitution. But she's not, and she sounds pitifully whiny. I have a lot more respect for Rona Barrett, who is actually doing Good Deeds in trying to raise awareness about the plight of the elderly.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||07/29/2017|
NO, to the nearest subway, Very down to earth person. .
|by Anonymous||reply 50||07/29/2017|
R49, Rona's actually building housing for the homeless on her own property.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||07/29/2017|
Gotcha. And just having a little fun--she does sound lovely.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||07/29/2017|
r52 responding to r50
|by Anonymous||reply 53||07/29/2017|
r51, but I'd bet my life she's not doing it gratis; most likely being reimbursed generously by the county, not to mention the tax advantages of such a scheme.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||07/29/2017|
Yes. Bernstein loved topping those black teen twinks. And his wife knew what was going on??? Or were they divorced
|by Anonymous||reply 55||07/29/2017|
"Charity begins at home."
|by Anonymous||reply 56||07/29/2017|
Ah. Rona has established "a charitable foundation."
|by Anonymous||reply 57||07/29/2017|
Enty is her son. You heard it here first!
|by Anonymous||reply 58||07/29/2017|
Took me a minute.
You mean "Enty," the "entertainment-lawyer-who-makes-shit-up" and calls it gossip, is the spawn of Rona B.?
|by Anonymous||reply 59||07/29/2017|
And you just know he's writing all that malarkey while billing clients for the time.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||07/29/2017|
Yes [R9], she "supported Trump" so much that he threatened to buy her paper so he could fire her
Only after Trump divorced Ivana. Before that she gave Trump loads of publicity. She may even be the one who started calling him The Donald in media. I don't recall anyone using it before Smith.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||07/29/2017|
If you read The NY Times, that story struck a nerve. 126 comments and counting.
At 94, Liiz is rich, living with Cynthia McFadden, has lots of great memories, and most importantly, has her mind. My parents are Liz's age, and they haven't left their house in 3 years. My mom has the mind of a 3 year old, never mind all her physical problems.
I can understand Liz's wanting to still remain relevant, but I don't feel sorry for her.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||07/29/2017|
Ivana famously called him "The Donald" during their 60 Minutes profile.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||07/29/2017|
Are she and McFadden a couple?
|by Anonymous||reply 64||07/29/2017|
Wasn't McFadden a couple with Katherine Hepburn in her dotage as well?
Cynthia must have a really bad Mommy complex.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||07/29/2017|
She lives with Cynthia McFadden? Says who?
|by Anonymous||reply 66||07/29/2017|
Who's Liz Smith?
|by Anonymous||reply 67||07/29/2017|
I don't know who r42 is talking about, but that description also fits James Levine. Except maybe Levine got to keep his job. But the Met had to hush up some of the things he did.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||07/29/2017|
According to R42, it "was very clear" who she was talking about. I guess not.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||07/29/2017|
r69, it depends in what decade she wrote it. If she wrote it pre-1980s, my guess would be Bernstein. If she wrote it 1980s or after, my first guess would be Levine.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||07/29/2017|
Her good buddy Rex Reed was just let go from The New York Observer. They should hold a pity party at The Dakota while Rex can still afford to live there.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||07/29/2017|
They should hold a pity party at The Dakota while Rex can still afford to live there.
Have you heard rumors that he might be leaving the Dakota?
|by Anonymous||reply 72||07/29/2017|
But in the end if her greatest claim to fame was announcing the breakup of Donald and Ivana.....I mean, what is that worth today, anyway?
Did she have any other famous scoops? I kept reading that Times article and the Jezebel follow-up in the hope of learning something more, but there just isn't anything more.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||07/29/2017|
R72, Yoko, dear, you already own multiple units within The Dakota, so knock it off.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||07/29/2017|
Rex Reed was fired? Where are we going to get our bitchy, contrarian movie reviews from?
|by Anonymous||reply 75||07/29/2017|
Christ! Liz now looks like Eunice Kennedy Shriver . . . if she had lived.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||07/29/2017|
"The publicist Bobby Zarem, angered over perceived slights, once helped send false wedding notices for Ms. Smith and her partner at the time, a socialite and archaeologist named Iris Love. Mr. Zarem, who, when asked to comment for this article, said, “I hope it’s for an obituary,” added that as Ms. Smith rose, people bowed to her."
Bobby sounds like your typical bitchy DLer.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||07/29/2017|
Dakota domination is my ultimate goal, r75.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||07/29/2017|
R78 Whatever as long as you don't "sing" Yoko.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||07/29/2017|
Why didn't Liz have hip replacement surgery after the broken hip? A friend of my mother's just had the surgery at age 93 and she's now pain free and walking unassisted.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||07/29/2017|
Wasn't Kaye Ballard also one of Liz's former lovers?
|by Anonymous||reply 81||07/29/2017|
Liz Smith, the most overrated, undeserving hack who gave journalism a bad name.
Rona was/is still the queen, a tried and true maven who gave good gossip and lives to help others.
Liz Smith set the trend for self-serving, talentless socialites who challenged nothing and fed off of mediocrity and pandered to pablum.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||07/29/2017|
R82 = Suzy Knickerbocker.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||07/29/2017|
Excuse me for going all SJW on ya'll, but Liz Smith embodied rich-bitch boredom and first world pettiness.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||07/29/2017|
RONA IS STILL THE QUEEN!
|by Anonymous||reply 85||07/29/2017|
Liz lost her job when she got scooped by Datalounge.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||07/29/2017|
Queen Rona Barrett wold appeal to us working class types because she brought the dish and dealt the hands!
Boring old rich-bitch Liz Smith bantered in the banality of gold ingots and tweed suited egomaniacal lesbos.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||07/29/2017|
Rona was a sexy bitch---all Jewish, all day long, red hot mami.
Liz Smith, tweed bearing, who wants to grind against that?!
|by Anonymous||reply 88||07/29/2017|
They were all high priced whores with no gossip worth wiping your ass on.
Have any of them had a movie made about them? That would be a big nope!
|by Anonymous||reply 89||07/29/2017|
Rona should still be a DL goddess. Was a fat Jewess and president of the Eddie Fisher fan club. Had a serious makeover and got a gig as an entertainment "reporter". Was never seen without makeup and perfect hair. Had a bitchy tag-line "keep thinking the good thoughts". Had amazing power as a reporter. Loathed by Frank Sinatra and Burt Reynolds especially. For a while was known as simply "Rona." Was mentioned on every sitcom and drama during the era. And had national reach.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||07/29/2017|
What is Holland Taylor's take on the article?
|by Anonymous||reply 91||07/29/2017|
R90, so true, so very, very true.
Rona Barrett shaped my childhood. I thought so highly of her. I saw her humanity, and I could feel her heartbeat.
If only she would convert to Catholism, we would make her a saint.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||07/29/2017|
Not Bernstein. Levine.
|by Anonymous||reply 93||07/29/2017|
Does Liz Smith care about the homeless like Rona Barrett does?
I thought not.
|by Anonymous||reply 94||07/29/2017|
I never saw her as competition for Rona Barrett. To me, Liz was a gossipy society columnist.
Rona was a Hollywood movie gossip maven. That was my take while growing up in Flyoverstan.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||07/29/2017|
I wonder what Fran Lebowitz thinks of the article. Didn't Liz try to attach herself to Fran when Fran was big with Andy Warhol and Interview magazine?
|by Anonymous||reply 96||07/29/2017|
Rona rules over all, and that means YOU Fran and Liz!
|by Anonymous||reply 97||07/29/2017|
I had no idea Rona Barrett was so esteemed here.
She should be - based solely on the opening line of her autobiography.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||07/29/2017|
I dated a famous celeb once, years ago, and this person physically and emotionally abused me, in public.
Rona offered solace. I never forgot that.
Love you Rona!
|by Anonymous||reply 99||07/29/2017|
clue us in, R98!
|by Anonymous||reply 100||07/29/2017|
So I'm pretty much the Generation X's answer to Cynthia McFadden?
|by Anonymous||reply 101||07/29/2017|
I remember as a gayling praying for the latest issue of Rona Barrett's Hollywood to appear on the shelves of a magazine store. It had fabulous color photos and it was there that I first learned that Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur were being touted for Oscar noms for the soon-to-be-released MAME!
|by Anonymous||reply 102||07/29/2017|
R100, "an inch Rona, let me put it in an inch."
|by Anonymous||reply 103||07/29/2017|
The entire line of Rona Barrett Hollywood magazines was fantastic. Great photos and Enquirer type Hollywood stories while NE was still doing stories on aliens raping women in North Dakota.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||07/29/2017|
No, Sarah P, r101. Cynthia has talent.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||07/29/2017|
The world needs Rona Barrett, not Lez Pith (Liz Smith).
|by Anonymous||reply 106||07/29/2017|
The Catholic Church acquired another great Jew, Richard Simmons, to come on board with us Mary-queens but what a catch Rona Barrett would be!
Please convert, Rona! xoxoxo
|by Anonymous||reply 107||07/29/2017|
Aha-ha great open, r103--(Yawn)
And isn't it interesting that just like Erica Jong--one of her contemporaries--Rona relentlessly implicates herself in fevered sexual situations (that undoubtedly NEVER happened in this lifetime), despite the fact that Barrett and Jong were two of the MOST UNFUCKABLE women of the 1970s?
Her imagination was as vivid as her quad-colored, wedgie hairdo.
|by Anonymous||reply 108||07/29/2017|
The posters above saying the subject of Smith's blind was James Levine are correct.
|by Anonymous||reply 109||07/29/2017|
Rona has/had GREAT sex appeal!
She was a cute, hawt, Jewish mami with a warm smile and a loving heart. Erica Jong had 'grooviness' to her and looked FAB with her big glasses, turtle neck sweaters and long, frosted hair.
It's Lez Pith (Liz Smith) who had no sex magic.
|by Anonymous||reply 110||07/29/2017|
I see Rona's $30 monthly PR retainer is not going to waste, r110.
lol. Nice try!
|by Anonymous||reply 111||07/29/2017|
Linda "scary" Blair
|by Anonymous||reply 112||07/29/2017|
Walters, Smith, Cindy Adams all hated Barrett, so she must have done something right.
|by Anonymous||reply 113||07/29/2017|
Erica Jong would have (gratefully!) fucked a German Shepherd.
|by Anonymous||reply 114||07/29/2017|
Well, R113 she was the OG--Original Gossiper.
Those wanna-bees just floundered in her lady-trail.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||07/29/2017|
Glenn Close is really sexy.
|by Anonymous||reply 116||07/29/2017|
R62 Why would you say that a obout McFadden? What is your source? The rumors about Hepburn were in large part based on CM being named as the Executor of KH's estate, as well as the Long time very very close association. CM does appear to be on friendly terms with a very senior circle Of Gay women.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||07/29/2017|
So Cynthia likes a good gummin', it seems.
I'm in my 40s and have never really heard of or read about this Rona Barrett character. Liz was a regular on talk shows and the E! Channel gossip show throughout my early life.
She was also good friends with Ann Richards so she cannot be all bad.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||07/29/2017|
Ann Richards had no sex magic either--that explains the friendship.
|by Anonymous||reply 119||07/29/2017|
Cynthia and Liz were an item ten years or so ago. I know someone who worked with Cynthia at the time and she once ran into them walking together and when this person said hi to Cynthia, Liz kept walking and Cynthia acted like she was out walking alone. It was bizarre.
|by Anonymous||reply 120||07/29/2017|
I love this woman, couldn't wait to read her column everyday and see her on the nightly news. So sad to get old and have everyone treat you like you're not there. Hope she is living comfortably.
|by Anonymous||reply 121||07/29/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 122||07/29/2017|
Maybe the ancients remind Cynthia of her undergrad halcyon days at Smith(?) Wellesley(?), when sympathetic seniors would take a frightened young fresh-woman under their wing, and introduce her to myriad pleasures of Sapphic love?
|by Anonymous||reply 123||07/29/2017|
Never understood the appeal of Cynthia MacFadden to men--or women. But Peter Jennings clearly adored her when she was at ABC. Sounds like she could have had her pick from either side of the fence.
|by Anonymous||reply 124||07/29/2017|
I never saw her as competition for Rona Barrett. To me, Liz was a gossipy society columnist.
In fact. I don't understand why people here are comparing Smith with Barrett... they where two very different columnists.
Smith was NY-centric society/celebrity columnist. She was little known outside of New York...little known by the wider public.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||07/29/2017|
Wow. Live at Five. Blast from the past. There's Sue. And ol' Jack Cafferty, who, a Times reviewer said, had "eyes like two dead pennies."
|by Anonymous||reply 126||07/29/2017|
Liz Smith, Chauncey Howell, Katie Kelly(?) and Dr. Frank Field rounded out the crew.
|by Anonymous||reply 127||07/29/2017|
Liz has been married to heiress Iris Love for many years now.
|by Anonymous||reply 128||07/29/2017|
I didn't realize that Darlene made that much money, R128.
|by Anonymous||reply 129||07/29/2017|
|by Anonymous||reply 130||07/29/2017|
I didn't find anything particularly sad about this. She had an exciting life being well paid doing what she loved doing, and she got old, really old. Like the elderly Casanova, you can't keep it up forever.
(I love this short clip from Nuit de Varennes)
|by Anonymous||reply 131||07/29/2017|
I always liked Liz Smith, yes she was very NY centric and was very generous with support for new artists that she liked. She could wield her power very generously back in the day.
|by Anonymous||reply 132||07/29/2017|
One of the toughest questions on the AP Gossip exam for many years--
[Frank Sinatra famously once said of her:
"That ugly broad. When she was born, the doctor slapped her mother."]
Who was Sinatra talking about?:
1. Rona Barrett 2. Barbara Walters 3. Joan Rivers 4. Erica Jong
|by Anonymous||reply 133||07/29/2017|
Smith was NY-centric society/celebrity columnist. She was little known outside of New York...little known by the wider public.
Did you miss the column syndicated to 70-odd newspapers worldwide?
|by Anonymous||reply 134||07/29/2017|
OH MY GOD. Did you see the pass that Lez Liz made at Lez Sue in the last seconds of r125's clip? The Lez love was thick at that station.
|by Anonymous||reply 135||07/29/2017|
I grew up reading with Liz Smith, first in the Daily News, then in the Post and Newsday, and now online.
Her online column is really good, full of rare and interesting photos of a mostly bygone era, and some interesting things to say and review about today's culture.
|by Anonymous||reply 136||07/29/2017|
R134 when you are reading her column in NYDaily news, about NY nightlife who cares that it is read in the wires elsewhere.
|by Anonymous||reply 137||07/29/2017|
The statement is that she was not known outside NY, which is a lie. I knew her when I lived in Bumfuck, TX, and it wasn't because she was from TX
|by Anonymous||reply 138||07/29/2017|
An interesting profile of Miss Rona from last year. She looks great.
|by Anonymous||reply 139||07/29/2017|
I'm sorry but that room that Rona's sitting in with the melon walls looks tacky.
|by Anonymous||reply 140||07/29/2017|
Cynthia must have a really bad Mommy complex.
Please give her my number. I may need a backup.
|by Anonymous||reply 141||07/29/2017|
Why does no one ever talk about ME?
(Make sure to catch the mention of the kidnap threat of Joan Crawford's children!)

I have no clue who rona barrett is but I do know who liz smith is. That tells you who was more successful.
|by Anonymous||reply 143||07/29/2017|
Rona was very pretty and still looks good.

How can anyone here with even a limited knowledge of classical music scene in NYC not know that she was referring to Levine. I wish that pig would go down in flames for the damage he's done to so many young & poor vulnerable boys. When I think of the many people that covered for him, it makes me sick to my stomach.
|by Anonymous||reply 145||07/29/2017|
R145 you mean James Levine? I had no idea.
|by Anonymous||reply 146||07/29/2017|
You might notice that Levine is rarely or ever at any big social gatherings in NY like other cultural icons. Apparently he basically goes between his apartment and the Met when he's in NYC, though he got into trouble in at least another city, apparently arrested and paid off by the Met. I've also heard stories of him hanging out by the male chorister's dressing/shower room, too. When he's retired from the music scene and/or passed on, lots more stories will surface. I was rather amazed in the '80s thought to see this in the Daily News. Even without him being named, it was clear who Liz Smith was talking about. There were also rumors that a famous soprano friend of his was supplying some of his favored interests.
|by Anonymous||reply 147||07/29/2017|
Liz Smith once talked about how she and Holland Taylor discussed taking LSD together.
|by Anonymous||reply 148||07/29/2017|
Levine was notorious and only liked black boys, The Met paid off many to squash the rumors and the lawsuits

Was it Kathleen Battle, r147?

Just a nosy, pushy gossip dyke cunt who did more to ruin people's lives than help humanity. POS New York celeb that the rest of the world shouldn't even bother caring about. The biggest reason for her fall is that all her powerful friends and associates in the press have most likely died of old age, along with any remaining loyal readers.
|by Anonymous||reply 151||07/30/2017|
She should still try to have a baby..

Whose life did Liz Smith ruin?
|by Anonymous||reply 153||07/30/2017|
Darn, I was hoping it was James Lipton whose career was ruined because he slept with underaged boys.
|by Anonymous||reply 154||07/30/2017|
James LIPTON is straight.
Did you miss the column syndicated to 70-odd newspapers worldwide?
I doubt that the masses were reading her columns in the newspapers.
Rona Barrett was all over television. At one point she even had her own daytime network show "Dateline: Hollywood " co-hosted with Joanna Barnes. She was a regular on "Good Morning America".
Liz Smith? She did NYC news programs and cable.
In no way can she be compare to Barrett.
|by Anonymous||reply 156||07/30/2017|
I'm with the poster above who grew up with Liz Smith and had never heard of Rona Barrett. Maybe it's an age thing. Smith was all over the place in the late 80s-early 90s.
|by Anonymous||reply 157||07/30/2017|
Rona wrangled spots on WABC-NY/KABC-LA, and Good Morning America, trying to surpass Liz Smith, who was clearly her competition
|by Anonymous||reply 158||07/30/2017|
I also remember Rona better, though I think maybe I associate her with the 70s. I think I was a teenager when her magazine would come to the house. My mother watched Good Morning America, so I guess that's where I saw her. Liz Smith is someone I think of more as a columnist and don't remember before the 80s.
|by Anonymous||reply 159||07/30/2017|
I remember Liz's regular spot on E!'s [italic]The Gossip Show[/italic] in the '90s.
|by Anonymous||reply 160||07/30/2017|
lol, r160 The infamous curse of three-names segueing into permanent obscurity.
Fame is fleeting, eh? And what a bitch she is, too!
|by Anonymous||reply 161||07/30/2017|
Right Liz was on E all the time. What is with all the trolls that have uncontrollable needs to hijack threads? Is it because the subjects Of their adoration are unable to carry a thread with a poster of 1 ?
|by Anonymous||reply 162||07/30/2017|
Frank Sinatra hated Rona Barrett. But I'm pretty sure he hated Liz Smith as well. Don't I remember a very public feud?
|by Anonymous||reply 163||07/30/2017|
Rona's interviews didn't have people jumping on sofas.
|by Anonymous||reply 164||07/30/2017|
The difference in fame between Rona and Liz is generational not geographic.
Rona was big in the 1960s and 1970s.
Liz was big in the 1980s and 1990s. I think Rona was even out of the gossip business before the 1990s began.
|by Anonymous||reply 165||07/30/2017|
Liz Smith did everything a man could do to me but backwards and in high heels.
|by Anonymous||reply 166||07/30/2017|
Liz wasn't born with a silver pussy in her mouth.
|by Anonymous||reply 167||07/30/2017|
I once saw Rona Barrett driving her Rolls Royce down Santa Monica Blvd. and I swear she was driving along in three-quarter profile. Was her neck stuck like that or something?
|by Anonymous||reply 168||07/30/2017|
I remember when Liz ran the blind item about the female host who was going to come out and then didn't. Both Oprah and Rosie (who the item was about) blew up at her. I can see why. Liz doesn't have to come out, but you do was her motto.
"Rosie, says Smith, "is crazy, that girl. She loses her temper at everything. The item didn't mention Rosie's name, and she was about to make this grand announcement, but instead she started yelling and screaming. That item was so careful, it didn't even say talk show host. It was such a blind item, it was groping around in the dark. (Laughs.)"
|by Anonymous||reply 169||07/30/2017|
But what about ME?
|by Anonymous||reply 170||07/30/2017|
Haber lost her job as well as any kind of respect she might have earned with her blind item that Jean Seberg was pregnant with the baby of a Black Panther.
A lot of people though Smith's blind item was about Carol Burnett.

I always thought Ann Richards and Liz Smith were dating/lovers?
I was a cater waiter 20+ years ago for the opening night party of "The Lion King" (Broadway musical) which was held at the Roxy nightclub, and Ann and Liz were there together. It was so crowded I decided to just go over and say hi to both and introduce myself to them. They were funny and charming as hell. It was so fun to meet them!
|by Anonymous||reply 172||07/30/2017|
Rona Barrett was more ostentatious.
|by Anonymous||reply 173||07/30/2017|
Actually she is the most successful gossip columnist of all time- she still has a column in NY Social Diary and it is full of wisdom and trenchant insight. Have a look. She also happens to be one of the nicest (famous) individuals you'll ever meet. She has also been a powerful charitable and philanthropic force in NYC for decades. Lot if of really small minds on this thread- too bad. What a life she has had.
|by Anonymous||reply 174||07/30/2017|
R 169, so you are saying that Oprah is indeed a DL Sister? I mean I have no doubt but where did you get the piece about them being angry at Liz? I have seen groups of gay women celebs in NYC - but never Oprah, though I did see her with Gayle at "The Trip to Bountiful."
|by Anonymous||reply 175||07/30/2017|
Renata Scotto's mob connections were said to aid Levine. I didn't hear about Battle ever helping him. Battle was finally dumped when he couldn't protect her from her own crazy behavior.
|by Anonymous||reply 176||07/30/2017|
Didn't Joyce Haber write a roman á clef back in the day? I remember reading at least some of it and it was pretty filthy, lol
|by Anonymous||reply 177||08/01/2017|
R177, "The Users". Back in the early 1970s, Joyce went on a mission to "out" Chuck Connors in her column, based on a grainy B&W video of him with another guy.

R178 So WAS The Rifleman gay?? Was he Rock Hudson gay or just John Wayne gay?
|by Anonymous||reply 180||08/01/2017|
Found the Chuck Connors video . . .
|by Anonymous||reply 181||08/01/2017|
What made gossip columnists like or hate someone? It seemed according to Feud that Hedda Hopper wanted to protect Joan Crawford, maybe that wasn't really the case.
But why would someone want to out someone when it would end their career?
|by Anonymous||reply 182||08/01/2017|
That video of Chick Connors is a hoot with the honkytonk music background. In some of the angles he almost looks like Tom Brady..or maybe Tom Brady's brother.
|by Anonymous||reply 183||08/01/2017|
I think she got the first part down but I always wondered about the second.
|by Anonymous||reply 184||08/03/2017|
What was sad about this? It's called "getting old", "changing times", not a big deal.
