Warner Bros. thinks Affleck is too old and fat to be Batman
a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.
Exactly when and how that might happen has yet to be determined, but it would be wise to bet against Affleck starring in The Batman. He has already stepped away from directing the film and Reeves is dropping the script that Affleck wrote with D.C. Entertainment’s Geoff Johns.
Affleck will turn 45 in August, so he would be pushing 50 before The Batman arrives in theaters. If Reeves makes a trilogy, Affleck would be in his mid-50s at best by the time that’s done. Maybe Tom Cruise could pull that off, but Affleck’s body hasn’t exactly been a temple.
And while male stars have been able to stretch their action-film relevance further in an age when there are fewer bankable young stars (Robert Downey Jr. is 52 and going strong as Iron Man), studios favor the fresh-faced — look what happened with Spider-Man, successfully rebooted with 21-year-old Tom Holland. (Affleck also just dropped out of the Netflix project Triple Frontier, and it’s not clear what his next movie will be. His reps declined to comment.)

More likely they are upset because his alcoholism completely derailed their plans for "The Batman".
They had to push back production, hire a new director and start a page one rewrite for the script.

Hugh Jackman - Wolverine at 48.
Clearly the problem with DC and all their movies from Batman v Superman to all their other franchise failures starts with their collective inability to do simple arithmetic.
They hired him to be Batman in 2013 when Ben was 41. Didn't anyone pullout the spreadsheets and Cray supercomputers to figure out he'd be 50 in 2022?

Anyway, I'll believe it when I see it. This seems like a PR tactic, they must be fighting with Ben about something.
The fanbase loved his portrayal, and this would be tough with the shared universe thing. The only way they can really do this if bring in a Nightwing who takes up the Batman mantle once Batfleck dies.
If they cast a big name actor for Nightwing, yeah, Ben should be worried.

Can you imagine Casey attempting to do Batman's voice? The man sounds like he's still going through puberty.
I think people thought that things were gonna get better after Wonder Woman's success, but everything I hear about upcoming DC films has me worried. The next Batman movie, if it even gets made, won't resemble whatever it was going to be like a month ago. Joss Whedon was brought on to finish Justice League after Snyder's unfortunate family issues. I also just read today that The Rock's no longer a part of Shazam, and getting The Rock into a superhero movie was one of the reasons people were really excited for that project.

Go with Damian Wayne. Affleck can cameo as fat, old Bruce Wayne eating doritos and coaching his son from the bat computer. You get to cast a 20-something in the role, you get to go with the updated "Batman Beyond" style suit over the dated Batman suit, and Damian has a penchant for being too violent, which seems to fit with how WB is portraying Batman these days. (Burning the bat sign into people's chests? Really??)
[bold]Ben Affleck Addresses Rumors He’s Leaving Batman[/bold]
Ben Affleck addressed rumors that he’s stepping down from the role of Batman, telling fans at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, July 22, not to believe everything they read.
“Let me be very clear,” he said during a panel promoting the new Justice League film. “I am the luckiest guy in the world. Batman is the coolest part in the universe. I’m so thrilled to do it. It’s f--king amazing.”
Affleck, who has made three film appearances as Batman (in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the new Justice League, as well as a cameo in Suicide Squad), reiterated to the Comic-Con audience that he “loves being in Hall H and being able to say, ‘I’m Batman.’”
He added that he “would be an ape on the ground for Matt Reeves,” who has taken over directing duties for The Batman and reportedly plans a trilogy with the Gotham City crime fighter.

R17, no you don't. I'm a fan of Batman and DC. Backstory: in the 90s I was part of a group of high school students who got to go to DC comics. It was so awesome seeing the cells of Batman/Robin etc....I'll never forget pointing and asking "are you making a new Batman cartoon"? "Yes, it's going to be called Batman the animated series"....."woooooow" I thought. They were really great. They gave us a ton of comics (many intertwined with Eclipso: The darkness within). I had asked them if they knew of any comic book store where I could get "Batman: A death in the family",.....they gave me a copy right on the spot. This made me love DC forever lol--I know you don't care lol but my point is this, Bale embodied Bruce Wayne/Batman. Ben Affleck doesn't embodied both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Ben isn't that great of an actor. Seeing him in the costume....he looks like a dull, slow, stupid person who decided he wanted to dress up as The Batman. Plus he has a gun and kills....something a lot of fans didn't like. I love DC (DCU) but it saddens me they don't have their shit straight and tight like Marvel (MCU). Marvel has consistency....Robert, Scarlett, Chris E., Chris H....all the same actors playing the same characters. Plus really great writers and director.--Oh and btw not all Wonder Woman fans liked Gal Gadot. I love Wonder Woman but she looks nothing like her, her acting is flat, she has no presence.

Christian Bale was so hot in Batman Begins. He looked too old in the last one. He was my favorite Bruce though.

Agree r121, he worked well in the role. And he is an appropriate age, this isn't Batman at the beginning of this career, this is an experienced Batman who has been doing this a while. And I like an older Batman, it allows them to have the full Batfamily cast of characters.

R49 yeah, I agree with you, I don't want to see Damian until he's grown out of being a brat and demeaning the Robin persona. It makes me kinda bitter that he put the cape & boots on, tbh, but there's no going back.
Robin is comic book hero because of what he or she represents; the antithetical emotion, humanity & heart that Batman needs to survive. If Robin is ambiguously grimdark as Batman, they can't work as a unit and more importantly they can't be what the other so badly needs. That's why Jason couldn't go back to it even when Bruce found him alive and he admitted the love between them was still there...
And obviously Jason is still dead in this Universe, but damn I'd love to see him back. He's more nuanced, more interesting & more emotional a character than Damian which translates perfectly to a dramatic screenplay (see the animated Under The Red Hood if y'all haven't - it blows recent liveaction Batman movies out of the water). Ok, his roots were troubled and he *may* have killed a guy as a teen but he's paid for that 100x over and has shown remorse. Jason also has stronger ties to the extended Bat-family and has more potential to shake up the established order, being an out-and-out antihero rather than just a bloodthirsty hero. He's also a hot Irish tuff with a chest to go to war for and a penchant for dirty-flirting and getting into fights - who *doesn't* choose him over a pouty sociopathic child with an anime sword?
Damian is a badass blood son to Bruce, whatever, he can stay; but in the eyes of many he'll never be a true Robin or a true son to Bruce like Dick is because of his cold, callous nature (before anyone says it; Tim Drake can be chilly but he has a huge heart).
But nerdlings & fanboys love their Tarantino-esque child vigilantes so who fucking cares about character, right?

ATJ's Pietro/Quicksilver will most likely be resurrected by Whedon, R70. Joss has a track record for not letting a character stay dead (see: Buffy, Angel) and ATJ proved more popular in the role than expected.
Btw WHET Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing Timothy Drake/Red Robin? He would have been perfect for the part. He was lined up for Christian Bale's Batman only, but chatter says his name remained in the mix even after Nolan wrapped it up....

[bold]EXCLUSIVE: WB Has Soured On Affleck, And Is THE BATMAN Part of The Shared Universe?[/bold]
I’m told that now, as of this writing, the studio is officially over Affleck.
I was asking my source for any updates regarding what I wrote a couple of months back- namely “Is Gyllenhaal officially our next Batman yet?”
“Gyllenhaal is probably Batman. Affleck is not out of it yet. That’s the thing, he still has a contract. But the studio is sour on him. If Ben rolls, Jake is in. Kind of a weird web. These guys both know they control each other’s destiny.”

Affleck thinks he's too good for Batman but Affleck can't act his way out of a paperbag. He was born to play expressionless Batman.

R9, Casey has never been accused of behaviour that is anywhere near rape. He settled a civil suit in 2009 that alleged sexual harassment. Not rape, not assault, harassment. It sounded appallingly sleazy behaviour but the escalation of it to rape on this and other sites is fucking ridiculous. And he can act.

Is Affleck ever gonna be hot again in hollywood? He got his second act, his second chance, thrived as a directer with his first three movies and rebuilt his image ...
Now it seems to be gone again.
Thoughts? What's his next move?

He should stick to directing and stop playing at being a celeb.

First of all, any Batman movie that focuses on any Batman other than Bruce Wayne is going to be a disaster. So kiss any idea of a movie starring Damian or Terry or Nightwing instead of Bruce Wayne goodbye--the current Bat-nerds alone just cannot put a Batman movie over, and they are the only ones who would want to see a Batman movie not starring Bruce Wayne.
Ben was not bad as Batman, but my guess is that the studio is going to try to distance itself from Zach Snyder, since neither justice League nor Batman v. Superman got the praise nor the audiences they hoped for. And if they distance themselves from Zach Snyder's Batman, that means they will distance themselves from Ben Affleck.
Finally, he's middle-aged and fat and alcoholic. It's time for a new Batman.

R142 Affleck's a good, but not great, director. The Oscars just love giving Oscars to actors when they direct and Affleck didn't even get that. Live by Night was a total disaster. Affleck directs so he can cast himself in lead roles which no other director would. He only got the lead in the Fincher because Fincher said he was playing himself.

Casey Affleck has many failures in his career -- anytime he deviates from the only role that he can play, he doesn't succeed. He can play troubled characters and that's literally it.
The Oscars just love giving Oscars to actors when they direct and Affleck didn't even get that.
Absurd. There was such a butthurt outcry when he was snubbed for Director that it positively guaranteed that his film (the very pedestrian Argo) would win Best Pic as a consolation. He still got an Oscar out of it all.
I don't know what his next move will be and he probably doesn't either at this point. He has nothing on his schedule, nothing new to film, nothing to promote. No one knows if he will fulfill his WB contract and make another appearance as Batman, or if they will buy him out and re-cast. It will probably be cheaper to keep him on and toss him into some movie as a supporting character and go for someone different with the Batman standalone movie. The one thing that he does have going for him is The Accountant. People seemed to really enjoy that movie and a sequel is in the works. An autistic assassin is a role that he CAN play and he got a lot of praise from the autism community for it, so if he can spin that into something of a franchise, that would obviously be good for his career.
I think that he will once again turn things around. The tabloid fixation with his private life will subside in time provided he doesn't go back to Jen Garner. Needs to finalize that divorce and move on. He is a self-obsessed Leo so he isn't going to wallow in the doldrums of the industry. He will fight his way back into the game, I'm sure of it.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL as BATMAN? 'No' Says the Actor
Jake Gyllenhaal was rumored to be The Batman writer/director Matt Reeves' leading choice to replace Affleck in the Dark Knight role, but when CNA Lifestyle asked the actor about it, he put the rumors and speculation to rest.
“Wow, that’s a very difficult question," Gyllenhaal said. “The answer to that question is ‘no’.”

Lordy just push him out and be done with it. I was never in favor of this grandpa taking the role. I'm tired of these egotistical actors ruining what could be good movies by not only taking parts that don;t remotely suit them, but insisting they have a part in the production and writing.
