Those I know who were once fans of Oprah Winfrey gradually changed their mind as success appeared to spoil her. Gone was the woman who was the antithesis of the "Hollywood image." That is to be successful in life and not just in entertainment one had to look a certain way and come from a privileged background.
Oprah in her initial talk show interviews talked about her own troubled childhood and very dysfunctional home. This was at a time when one hid the truth about being molested and/or raped. It still wasn't acceptable to admit you didn't want any contact with family members and relatives who had been and still were abusive.
Very little expectations were placed on girls that weren't physically attractive and/or from a strong, secure environment. So people still made up stories to avoid being constantly dissed and put down for situations beyond their control. Otherwise everyone would tell you how lucky you were to get a man who wanted you despite your family background.
Can't tell you how many were so disappointed to Oprah talk about buying real fur coats for herself and all staff. How over-the-top and totally unnecessary to brag about it. Then there were the stories that employees had to buy her lavish gifts. WTF?
Worse was when she started promoting "non-Christians" simply because they were paying a PR agent to promote their books. Before those at DL start writing critical posts in mass, let me try and explain what I mean.
There have been a number of mainstream ministers who've written books at the end of their career. NO I'm not talking about televangelists. I am referring to the well-educated, often sons of other preachers, who wanted to relay to future generations to come what they had learned from a lifetime of counseling the severely depressed, many of whom were dealing with terrible tragedies.
What they wrote was designed to be read by those of all religious faiths so very little of the material if any dealt with specific beliefs. The intent was to be as practical and as specific as possible in helping people to move forward with their lives in a realistic way. For those who could not afford counseling or therapy these books soon available in cheap paperback were the answer.
So by comparison the authors Oprah began to promote on her show were viewed as salespeople with no real credentials other than wanting pap attention to make a buck. Compare that with a minister who had counseled hundreds and hundreds of families of immigrants and others emotionally scarred by warfare, poverty, extreme prejudice, unspeakable devastation, and who were so shell-shocked they couldn't function. Wouldn't you want to know what he said to them so that they could start their lives anew? It sure wasn't the phony sounding phrases and pablum of Oprah's guest authors.
Worse was Oprah Winfrey's over adulation bordering on phoniness of certain stars. It's as if she was abusing the trust of her fan base. What a joke that certain DL posters think today she could ever run for any public office.
