Blue Sky (1994) starring Jessica Lange

I cracked again today; unraveled like a colorful maypole. I'm always fighting myself; raging against my own progress and evolution. Thankfully, I'm still capable of holding myself back; stopping just before plunging from the edge of the precipice.

I thought of my favorite turn by an actress ever. I thought of Lange's muscular, sexually charged, feuled by a primal, universal rage performance. How fluid, mercurial, violent and triumphant it is. I settled down.

I'm too drunk (I have to be to not keep going like a bright white kite in a hurricane), so I really can't play piano. I put some Tori Amos on. Something - "Datura" - that can keep up with my current electricity.

Carly Marshall is just a flying white-hot myth in my mind's eye - but the thouvht of her keeps me steady.

[bold]The[/bold] best Oscar for Best Actress winner ever.

I was an extra in this film. I was in the scene where she goes crazy and drives her car into a parade stand because Powers Booth had tommy Lee Jones locked up and drugged out of his gourd.

Perfection

by Anonymousreply 38December 26, 2017 4:45 AM

Oh come on, I LOVE Jessica, but Blue Sky was NOT what she should have won her second Oscar for.

Her performances in Music Box and Men Don't Leave are much better.

by Anonymousreply 39December 26, 2017 4:50 AM

You may be right, r39, but there's just something so visceral, raw, and compelling about her performance in Blue Sky. It was mesmerizing.

by Anonymousreply 40December 26, 2017 4:57 AM

R39 She is stunning and shattering in the two you mentioned.

She's incandescent and iconic in "Blue Sky". And in her mid-40's to boot. One of the rare times the Academy went against the grain and got it absolutely right.

On a side note: Crissy Rock and Sigourney Weaver were the only ones to come close to Lange's white-hot intensity. Linda Fiorentino was great, but nowhere near Oscar worthy and tepid compared to Lange's visceral,

Every word of this.

*visceral, tempestuous work

by Anonymousreply 43December 26, 2017 5:07 AM

Such perfection

by Anonymousreply 44February 9, 2018 4:10 AM

I pretty much love everything that Lange ever does or did. This is not one of my favorite Lange performances, but there have been so many that were sensational. Any time that she is nominated, the nomination not only is due to a worthy performance, but tons of those which have not been recognized. Personally, I can not get enough of her and THANK GOD that she continues to act into her later years. Always a breathtaking beauty and always the best-of-the-best performances given. What more can you ask for?

by Anonymousreply 45February 9, 2018 4:41 AM

Love it.

by Anonymousreply 46February 9, 2018 6:13 AM

Tommy Lee Jones was surprisingly sensitive and loveable in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 47February 9, 2018 6:25 AM

R47 he was wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 48February 9, 2018 3:15 PM

Such a deserved win!

by Anonymousreply 49February 9, 2018 4:55 PM

She seems unwell in the film -- as she does in many of her performances. All that grunting; it's like she has a breathing problem.

by Anonymousreply 50February 9, 2018 5:04 PM

Good job ;, Sherlock. She plays a bipolar nymphomaniac in the film.

by Anonymousreply 51February 9, 2018 5:07 PM

And, it would seem, every other film...

by Anonymousreply 52February 9, 2018 5:08 PM

I loved this film but am always surprised she won for this.

by Anonymousreply 53February 9, 2018 5:11 PM

I'm not bothered to read the thread really.

But, yes, her win for this was a surprise. It was actually probably the closest thing to a surprise Best Actress since KHepburn's 4th win. It was a kinda begrudging "well-who-do-we-give-it-too?" In fact, it was probably one of, if not, *the* weakest year in history. And, there did really seem to be no obvious winner.

Who else? A third for Foster? At that age? Richardson who? Ryder? Too young. And... oh, I better not even speak of DL's despised She Who Shall Not Be Named or it'll derail the whole thread.

Lange seemed to win by default.

It was Jason-Leigh who won the NY Critics Choice, Foster the Golden Globe. Yet Jason-Leigh (and even Linda Fiorentino) didn't even get an Oscar nom and the Meg Ryan now less cute and getting beaten up role didn't translate either. Even M was MIA from the Oscars in that year! So, be the time the Oscars finally trundled around... it just seemed to coalesce as it does around Lange -- however half-heartedly though.

I only vaguley remember it really, probably because it was so boring. All in all, one of the most forgettable BActress years -- both films, and, of course, performances.

by Anonymousreply 54February 9, 2018 5:28 PM

G was on Broadway that year, wasn't she?

I know I said I wouldn't mention her... and I know she's not too popular around here... but... I think Sarandon might've been better in BLUE SKY. Who else could've done it? M? Judy Davis? Dunaway, I think, would've been great ten years earlier, I think she'd gotten her first (aging) facelift by that point.

by Anonymousreply 57February 9, 2018 5:45 PM

If only Gary Morton hadn't talked Lucy's corpse outta it.

by Anonymousreply 58February 9, 2018 5:46 PM

Ordinarily, Sarandon would've won.. She was nominated for a box office hit after starring in a string of them and she was Oscarless.

The Academy made the right choice which was also an iconoclastic one, too.

by Anonymousreply 59February 9, 2018 5:50 PM

Lange also won the LA Critics Circle Award , known for their pickiness and against the grain choices.

Lange deserved the Oscar in 94 and in any other year quite frankly.

by Anonymousreply 60February 9, 2018 5:55 PM

Why are there two threads going? Goodbye.

by Anonymousreply 61February 9, 2018 5:57 PM

R54, Jessica won the Golden Globe and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association award for Blue Sky. She was also nominated for the SAG and the National Society of Film Critics that year, so her Oscar win was not exactly a surprise.

by Anonymousreply 62February 9, 2018 5:57 PM

Lange is amazing here. So glad she won.

by Anonymousreply 68March 3, 2018 4:10 AM

The first time I saw this movie, I didn't watch it the whole way through... I found it very slow and boring, took a while to take off. Her performance was unsettling, having a bipolar sibling, I guess it just hit close to home. Probably her finest film performance. Sensitive and nuanced, yet emotionally raw.

by Anonymousreply 69March 3, 2018 4:41 AM

R69 Agree.

by Anonymousreply 70March 4, 2018 3:40 AM

I always connected with her meltdown after seeing their new housing on the base. She nailed the hopelessness and the futility of it all.
