Matt Bomer in Mark Ruffalo's movie Anything premiere
EXCLUSIVE: Matt Bomer and John Carroll Lynch topline Anything, a drama from first-time feature director Timothy McNeil that stars Bomer as a transgender woman who falls in love with a straight man. This is the first look at the Mark Ruffalo-exec produced pic, which has its world premiere this weekend in the LA Muse section of the Los Angeles Film Festival.
A sultry Bomer says, "I like things deep, know what I mean?"

Such a silly argument. Actors are not limited to playing themselves in art. The Ts are supposed to be part of the LGBT, but they are trashing a gay actor because he is "cis." If the divide is between Ts and "cis" LGBs, they need to start their own organization. They should give this performance by a sensitive, culturally aware gay man a chance before they condemn it.

"Iโm only going to do it if itโs the right story thatโs told for the right reason, and thatโs relevant to this day and age, as much as it pays homage to who this man was. Should that happen during the time when Iโm still young enough to play him, perfect. And if not, hopefully someone else will get to play him because I do think itโs an incredible story." R53 I believe the trans actress from Sense8 was the one who tweeted that. (It was also tweeted at Michelle Rodriguez.) I thought it was odd because I'm assuming he's donated to numerous LGBT charities. Given how the T has taken over most of those organizations, most of the money probably goes to them.

Jen Richards is once again dumping on Matt Bomer.
Jen just doesn't get it. There's no audience for a film starring a trans lead.
Women can't relate to trans women. Most men are not attracted to trans women. So who would actually watch the film if a trans woman was playing the lead?

Mark Ruffalo is a certified social activist. They hired a couple of trans actors and consultants. It comes down to whether only trans can play trans. The play has been around for awhile and Freda has been played by men. The question is whether the trans protests will have enough influence to hurt the movie. They may just be creating curiosity and publicity for it.

Is the character someone who takes female hormones and has had surgery? I know some think only trans should play trans, but trans encompasses a lot of things. Someone who has medically transitioned looks a lot different than a male bodied person who dresses like a woman. I remember people being upset that about Transparent before it started. I wondered where they were supposed to find a 70 year old actor who was Trans but hadn't taken any hormones or had surgery yet, just like the character.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 16, 2017 7:15 PM

Here is Jen's argument, but it is ridiculous to insist that this movie will lead directly to violence against trans women. She actually says at one point that she doesn't object to any actor being able to play any role, but then returns to her violence argument. She also says she likes Matt, who is a nice guy, but she feels compelled to trash his movie anyway. It's like she wants to seem sympathetic but she just HAS to speak out to SAVE LIVES! So does that make Matt & Mark accessories to crime if they don't withdraw the movie?

I don't know, R90. The character is supposed to be transgender but not sure where they are supposed to be in their "transition".
I don't understand the logic of the trans community. They seem to think if a "passable" trans woman played Bomer's role that filmgoers would suddenly believe that trans women are women. But this is wrong because most trans women can't pass as women. The trans we see in real-life still look like men under the makeup and dresses. So Bomer is an appropriate casting choice if the trans community wants to promote acceptance of real-life trans women like Jen Richards.

Someone should point out to Jen Richards that misrepresenting that you are a biological man to potential sex partners will about 100000000 times more likely cause violence against trans people then Matt Bomer playing a tranny in a movie. Also, this kind of shit pretty much will seal the deal that films about trans people won't get made. Sheryl Underwood on The Talk when discussing her career and Mo'Nique's referenced a list in Hollywood called the "LIFE'S TOO SHORT LIST" which basically blackballs people who are too much of a pain in the ass and not worth the effort. Jen Richards and her fellow SJW trans actors fit into this category.

Jen Richards says that casting a man as a trans reinforces they believe that trans women are men, she thinks that if they had cast HER people were going to see an actual woman. Well, not really, she still looks like a dude with good make up. She is really delusional and vindictive. She is mad she wasn't cast and is going full on cunt on Matt. This is hurting her cause and image. I personally can't wait to watch this film, and I know Bomer is going to do a great job, he is a good actor who can actually sell a movie, unlike an unknown trans like Richards.

The main issue, even before all of this, is that originally the character in the play Anything, on which this movie was based, was a crossdresser and not transgender.

[R118], I posted about "The Last Tycoon" @[R116]/[R117]; I do not consider myself a Matt Bomer fan, but after seeing the LT trailer I got really excited for this series and very open to giving Bomer a real try as an actor.
I never got into "White Collar" and haven't really seen anything else he's done since then.
"The Last Tycoon" looks very good to me though, and--judging by the trailer--it seems like Bomer will do a great job in a very meaty role (and it also looks like he's working with several good actors in it--which is another plus).
I'm not interested in the trans movie at all (and am not happy about what trans activists are doing to gay rights and women's rights). I don't judge him for doing the movie, but I won't be watching it.
I definitely am looking forward to seeing him in "The Last Tycoon" though!

Because Mark Ruffalo. Because like many privileged white heterosexual people in Hollywood who fancy themselves as outspoken progressives (see also: Banks, Elizabeth and Damon, Matt) he is so fucking dense he can't see how obnoxious he is when he unconsciously exercises his privilege. Everything you need to know is from his explanation about why he cast Bomer: because he was so good playing a gay man in The Normal Heart. So the next logical step would be to cast him as transgender right? Because to people like Ruffalo, those are the same thing. And of course Bomer is such a cocksucker to his big Hollywood friend, he says yes.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 17, 2017 12:04 PM

And that's also why Ruffalo changed it from trasvestite to transgender. Because in his mind, those are the same thing. But transgender is trendier now, so why not?
by Anonymous | reply 123 | June 17, 2017 12:08 PM

If they had left it transvestite, they probably would have gotten the same crap from the same people. "Why didn't you make the character trans instead of just a man who looks like a woman?!" After all, it would still be a man with good hair and makeup in a woman's clothes - and everybody knows that's what killing trans women - "literally"....

Walking Out looks like a pretty good movie, too. It's hard to imagine 3 more different roles than Walking Out, Last Tycoon and Anything, which will all be shown about the same time. Magic Mike, The Normal Heart, Spaceship 76, and The Nice Guys all had very different characters, too. Matt has been busy since White Collar ended, but no future projects have been announced.

This was his trans coach:
Kylene K. Steele was an associate producer and personally worked with Bomer, as shown in a video on YouTube. She posted on Facebook that she โworked so hard together on the development and honesty of the character; I am truly touched by his openness and commitment to developing Freda with authenticity.โ (lgbtqnation.com)
[bold]kylenekristensteele[/bold] "The awesome Matt Bomer and I were working on a film 3 weeks ago, but we worked together about a month beforehand. Working with him was a pleasure and he was so kind, down to earth, humble, and so connected to the Universe; of course handsome as well. We laughed, shared, and talked about important issues that society is facing today in this world. I can't talk much about our film but I will tell you that he is spectacular and I can't wait for the whole world to see it. Also his eyes are even more amazing in real life." (Twitter)

The show is absolutely terrible, but it will probably get two seasons because Amazon renews everything. If it doesn't get two seasons it'll be because of costs which are considerable for any period show. Or if Amazon replaces its original programming team which everyone is expecting given its continued failure to generate hits.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | June 19, 2017 2:47 PM

Actually, the pilot wasn't bad, but it sounds like the show will get better with time. Bomer and Grammer have enough fans to at least give it a good start. Last summer Amazon voters picked it to continue as a series. Hard to imagine it lasting 5 seasons, but who knows?

Matt has a such a thing for older men. Simon, Ryan Murphy and Tim DeKay are all about the same age and Kelsey Grammer is only a little older. More the age of an uncle than a father. Or maybe a teacher.
Murphy is supposedly working on a sequel to TNH so maybe Matt will have a flashback role in that.

The NYT panned it, too, but this is a fairly positive review that suggests the show will succeed better as a reimagined plot set in Fitzgerald's milieu than it would to attempt a literal interpretation of the unfinished novel. In the interview at R181, that is what screenwriter Chris Keyser said they are trying to do. Reviews for the 1976 version of TLT and all, versions of Great Gatsby have been weak, so trying something different may work better.
Bomer, who was decorative in the Magic Mike movies but dug deep as the closeted New York Times reporter in Ryan Murphy's The Normal Heart, gives a performance of real warmth and delicacy. Rather than play Freda as a force of nature or a collection of mannerisms โ the typical default modes of actors playing trans women โ Bomer renders her fully dimensional: an unpredictable tangle of impulses, by turns defensive and tender. (It's worth noting that associate producer Kylene K. Steele, a transgender woman, was a personal consultant to Bomer throughout the shoot.)

I would have loved to see Monroe Stahr be portrayed in The Last Tycoon as a closeted homosexual (although Fitzgerald did not imagine that). He could have idealized his beautiful wife and their short lived marriage retrospectively. He could flirt with attractive young actors and have clandestine encounters with them. Women could find him attractive because he is so unattainable and he could lead them on. It could be a secret that many people suspected and a few people knew. Brady could hold it over him.

No, Duckling is Duckling. All his roles from Magic Mike to Transbomer are a testament to his Ducklingness; even Ryan Murphy sees this which is why he puts Bomer in these borderline insulting roles while giving better roles to Wes Bentley and Finn Wittrock.

Oh sure, controversy and real criticism are great, but repetitively posting the same juvenile insults is not witty. Silly name calling and pointless disparagement are just annoying after a while. People can criticize Bomer as well. You're a stan and gossip is no fun with stans. Bomer is letting himself become this machine like stepford husband and he needs to get called out on it. He needs to grow up and show some personality. I used to be a major fan but his lack of balls, daddy issues, ruining White Collar cause he was drooling over De Kay every 5 mins and now virtue signalling with this Trans project when all Trans people do is WHINE that they don't want men to represent them, well, it couldn't happen to a more fake guy!

Now that's an interesting reply, R245! We don't have to agree, but I think you make some good points there. I generally admire Matt Bomer, but I don't love everything he says or does.
I started this thread because I'm interested in the trans controversy about what looks like it will be a good movie. I wonder if that movie will be successful or even released for the public, and also whether this controversy will bleed over into his other projects. When he came out to the public as gay, the DL consensus was that he would never be able to get a straight leading man role, but that's what he has in The Last Tycoon.

He is handling his fans on Twitter the same way other celebs do. He has met a few of them in person that are Pres of his fan clubs, etc. They are not any crazier than any other fans. He has stepped up his tweets of XO & โค๏ธlately In reply to requests, somewhere between 5-10 a day, but not every day. Presumably it is part of his visibility campaign to encourage an audience for TLT. He has never mentioned trans or the movie Anything.
The incident with the trans was last August when Jen Richards sent her first complaint. He was attending his grandfather's funeral in TX at the time and, for a few hours, he blocked anything to do with the trans controversy. Then he unblocked and followed some of the fans. Jen said he called her and they had a nice conversation. He follows a little over a thousand people and that number has not dramatically changed. He has more than 600,000 followers.

R265 You took that very literally, didn't you? I don't know exactly what time the funeral was and what time Matt was on Twitter. I bet he didn't have to search as he was probably alerted about Jen's rant. It's possible he didn't even do it himself. A pr rep could have done it for him.
R266 Well, all movies with a man playing a woman are exactly the same, aren't they? You know, Matt has been criticized here on DL for being too pretty to play substantive characters. Guess that won't be a problem in Anything.
R267 Yeah, it premiered on Sat and we haven't heard anything else about it for a day or two, so I guess it's all over now! We didn't hear anything about the movie from Sept until the premiere was announced about a month ago, though. Information on Irving Thalberg, producer for MGM, married to Norma Shearer. Grammer' character Brady is based on Louis Meyer.
He and Mayer had completely different personalities, and approached the business of picure making from opposite directions, with Mayer doing the business management and Thalberg taking charge of making the 'product', but together they made a formidable combination. Their partnership over the next decade made MGM the pre-eminent Hollywood studio and one of the few studios to remain profitable through the years of the Great Depression.

BTW, Fitzgerald worked for them as writer and that's how the book was inspired. It was never finished and was not published during his lifetime. That's why it leaves plenty of room for improvisation on the story from the initial setup. The story is told from the point of view of Brady's daughter Cecelia (played by Lily Collins) who is a college aged girl with a crush on Stahr.

So ASSUMING Matt only does what his husband tells him, Simon as an LGBT expert should have advised Matt to give in to trans politics rather than take a an interesting and challenging role offered to him by his friend Mark Ruffalo? Maybe Simon & Matt believe, as many posters here do, that the trans are being unreasonable and actors should play the roles they want to, even if their choice isn't popular with everyone. Maybe it will not turn out to be a big mistake after all.

R300 Matt has mentioned in a number of interviews that he read The Day of the Locust by Nathaniel West when they first started making Last Tycoon and he took inspiration from that as well as the Fitzgerald book. Here is a fascinating description and review of that book. It was made into a movie in 1975 starring William Atherton, Karen Black, Donald Sutherland, and Geraldine Page.

Wow - rave review. Too bad they spell Bomer wrong! No mention of the trans- cis- controversy.
Freda is a wall of sound and fury in the hands of Matt Boomer. Her quick aggressive responses show her years of distrust and misuse at the hands of others. Boomer plays Freda as though sheโs been scraped across the concrete by the world, finding herself jagged and used. McNeil never succumbs to playing Freda as a visual gag or a means to an end. Rather Boomer is allowed to create a fully-realized character; she is not simply a statement to rest an ideal on.
Anything is a balancing act of humor, humanity and small intimate moments. The film carries with it a compassion and heart that is enough to melt even the most jaded of viewers if open to the experience. There is neither bombast nor flag waving in Anything. In the end, itโs about those basic human truths we all strive for and need: love, compassion, understanding and someone to stand by us no matter what. In 2017 few (if any) films will carry that message better than Anything.

Interesting information - According to this UCLA study apparently the number of people in the US who self-identify as transgender has doubled since 2011. Still, not a large pool, especially when you break it down by age.
National and State-Level Estimates of Transgender-Identifed Adults
An estimated 0.6% of adults, about 1.4 million, identify as transgender in the United States. States vary in the percentage of residents who identify as transgender (See Table 1). Hawaii has the highest percentage of adults who identify as transgender, approximately 0.8% of adults, and North Dakota has the lowest percentage, at 0.3%. The District of Columbia is notable for its relatively high percentage of transgender-identi ed adults (2.8%).6. Twenty states and the District of Columbia are estimated to have a higher percentage of transgender-identifed adults than the national average.
Estimates of Transgender-Identifed Adults by Age
Prior research suggests that individuals who identify as transgender are younger, on average, than non-transgender individuals. As expected, we found that younger adults are more likely than older adults to identify as transgender. An estimated 0.7% of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 identify as transgender. Lower percentages of older adults identify as transgender, with 0.6% of adults age 25 to 64 and 0.5% of adults age 65 or older identifying as transgender.

Let's not turn this into a trans thread!
I like the guy who is mad at Matt for following people who put him down, but says Matt follows him even though he puts Matt down all the time. I guess this is the same guy who is so worked up about Matt's choices in his career, his marriage & appearance.

R374 = idiot. Alan lives a straight life but his sexuality is always intended to be ambiguous. The trouble is, if gay actors take gay roles, then everyone will say that's all they can play. It's a ridiculous idea that someone can't play a role unless he has experienced what the character has. (So, you know, like soldiers should play soldiers, Wall Street tycoons should play tycoons, doctors should play docs, etc.) Sort of takes all the art and imagination out of it, doesn't it? Theater is supposed to be about an illusion of reality; not simply a recording of real life.

Yet another excuse to justify het actors taking gay roles from gay actors. They will still grasp at any straw to justify their double standards as to why blackface is unacceptable but gayface is. Why should gay actors be forced to perpetuate this lie? Where's the gay male equivalent of Nell Harper to say "don't you realize you're making fun of gay people" to Matt Damon's Joey-Lawrence-in-blackface caliber HBO gayface followed by telling gay actors to stay in the closet?
Oh, and [italic]Myra Breckinridge[/italic] was a warning, not an instruction manual. Gay actors need to demand more and better gay roles and demand that gay roles go to gay actors. Enough is enough.

It's telling that he hasn't been back since that season on screen. He did a quick voice over in AHS: Roanoke but that was uncredited and he's never commented on it. He likely won't be appearing this season on AHS either but he also mentioned that he's limited in what he can do because of his contract with Amazon.
It was interesting that he mentioned he'll be directing an episode of Versace and the project he's been hinting at doing in NYC in theatre may also be a Murphy production.
Overall this was the most open and honest interview he has given in a long time. No repeated stories that he's regurgitated multiple times. There was a bit of personality there. It's refreshing.

He probably has been heavily influenced in his career choices by his friends (and his husband). Most of them are older and more experienced than he is plus they offered him opportunities. Ryan Murphy, Mark Ruffalo, Channng Tatum. He also likes to become friends with people he works with (like Stefani). AHS and Magic Mike made him very well known. He never mentions his tv shows like Chuck, Traveler, or Tru Calling or movies like Space Station 76 , Flightplan, etc. He has at least managed to be a working actor most of the time. Billy Ray says Matt is the only actor he considered for Last Tycoon, but he never says why. Did they already know each other?

Here's the thing: Bomer and Halls are both huge cocksuckers for anyone higher on the Hollywood food chain than them. Anyone with two brain cells could have told Bomer it was a terrible idea to play trans, but ooooooooh Mark Ruffalo. So there we have that.

think Bomer is talking about saying no to certain roles, Murphy, Ruffalo, Channing. He is directing for Murphy not acting on AHS. Btw what's wrong with role? So many actors have won awards. It's a dream role. The political climate right now is bad, that's all.

Halls was never Bomer's publicist in an official capacity. Once Bomer actually needed a publicist for White Collar, Halls assigned him to Jennifer Allen who was an underling at PMKHBH. Then when that agency imploded, Allen kept him as a client when she went on to start her own agency.
Bomer hooked up two friends, Zachary Quinto and Lee Pace, with Halls for PR. They both fired him.

Does Bomer know that Ruffalo is a big fan of Linda Cockroach?
by Anonymous | reply 451 | July 27, 2017 10:52 AM

Of course Bomer only regrets Anything because of the political fallout. Surely his agents/managers with all their breadth of experience, would have warned him against taking a trans prostitute role in this climate, after what Jared Leto went through. But noooo, Mark Ruffalo needed his cock sucked (metaphorically) so he took the role.
Same thing with Magic Mike 2, Bomer actually had some leverage with that film because they needed him, you think he could have insisted that he get written some funny scenes. But no, Channing needed his cock sucked, so he settled for warbling out those two songs and as a result his big finale he does with microphone wires coming out of his ass.

by Anonymous | reply 455 | July 27, 2017 2:15 PM

That's a great article! I think it's pretty obvious that in 2004 he got together with Simon, and came out to his family, and had his first (Simon's) child. He has talked in other interviews about how that changed his life. It fits with his career history, too. They seem amazingly happy with each other after so many years together. He tries hard to balance his personal & professional life in an authentic way. For him, being gay is just part of who he is, not a "lifestyle." He seems more comfortable with himself in recent interviews, less rehearsed, maybe because he will be 40 yrs old this Fall.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | July 27, 2017 3:03 PM

If the article stated that he used to represent him, it was never in any official capacity (not saying he didn't do pro bono work). When Bomer got together with Mr Peabody, he was so minor (just off Tru Calling) he would not have needed/been able to afford a top Hollywood publicist.

Bomer says โItโs OK to take your time as the gay artist and pull the purse strings and wait for something that really hits you in the butt with a hump in the hole by Simon to recover."
That was a deeply honest interview from an artist.

R429 He always blame others for things he didn't get. He's such a weak character.
To me, Bomer is a 21st century Cary Grant, he is debasing himself -No, Duckling is Duckling. All his roles from Magic Mike to Transbomer are a testament to his Ducklingness; even Ryan Murphy sees this which is why he puts Bomer in these borderline insulting roles while giving better roles to Wes Bentley and Finn Wittrock.
Makes more sense on why he was namedropping his puberty orgy partner Gaga as "Stefani", to feel more serious, more adult.

Okay, now that the movie is available to watch online, has anyone seen it? Was Matt credible? Was the movie well written? What about the other characters? Is it worth seeing?

I thought the acting was okay, but the plot was unbelievable. This grieving newly widowed insurance aged from Mississippi moves to Los Angeles at the insistence of his overbearing sister after he attempts suicide. He then decides to move into a sleazy apartment in Hollywood where his neighbors are drug addicts and prostitutes and he falls in love with a trans. When he tries to introduce her to his sister and her family, things go badly. Really???
(No spoilers. You can get that much from the trailer.)

OK, SPOILER: So it seems that the widower โlovesโ the trans and is relatively unconcerned about what their sexual relationship will be like as long as itโs โfun.โ They never even kiss, so where the passion is coming from is a mystery. The sister acts like a total bitch, but she does kind of have a point about her brotherโs naรฏvetรฉ. Meanwhile the whole heroin dealer-victim sidestory seems pointless. Itโs unclear why any of these people care about each other, if they really even do.

You know thereโs a problem when the most attractive character is a drug dealer. Micah Hauptmann plays David.
