"Pray for Paris."

by Anonymousreply 254November 9, 2018 10:49 PM

All those international terrorist incidents just become memes with the phrase "Pray for ______" overlayed. They all drive me up the wall because I just want to yell at every person who shares them online: "There is no God! Prayers do nothing!"

R38, I remember the Selena murder very well. There was a mainstream movie about it. I'm not Hispanic! I don't remember polling other whites about it, but I think most people were generally aware of it and thought it was sad.

A few people have mentioned Monica Lewinsky. Her name has actually come up quite a bit lately. Like, constantly. If you're on Facebook and read political posts/newspaper articles on there, both Republicans and Democrats have been bringing up that whole scandal on a daily basis, as it relates (or doesn't) to our current To Impeach Or Not To Impeach? quandary.

R49: not only do I not remember those stampede deaths, I don't think I had ever heard of this in all of my 4-plus decades on this Earth.

Another forgotten stampede incident that happened here in the U.S. (with almost as many fatalities as there were in The Who tragedy) was the horror that took place in N.Y.C. on December 28, 1991 - when 9 people were trampled to their deaths while trying to gain access to a City College of New York gymnasium where the "Heavy D and Puff Daddy Celebrity Charity Basketball Game" was to take place. Certain stars from the world of hip-hop and R&B were due to participate in this charity basketball game.

I remember hearing about this when it happened - and it happened to be the very first time I heard of an up-and-comer named Puff Daddy (P. Diddy). He and Heavy D. were involved in organizing/promoting the event - and were partially blamed for the catastrophe.

R13 - that's an interesting way of putting it. It sometimes seems to me that this was something that was known, but mostly omitted from mainstream coverage of the murders. Well, "gay for pay" may be more accurate when it comes to some of the victims; for it's been said that many of the victims were "street hustlers", but left unsaid is exactly what type of hustling that included.

R38 - like R43, I am also a non-Latino who remembers the Selena murder very well....I don't consider it something that has been forgotten about by any means. There is something about that event that left a certain enduring impact - it may not be explicitly mentioned every day, but it's not totally out of the public consciousness, either.

I think it has helped that:

A very successful movie was made about Selena's life and murder; a movie that - to this day - you can sometimes catch on cable or even network TV.

The posthumous single "I Could Fall In Love With You" has been very successful, and is not a song that has disappeared from playlists; for ex., it is often one of the "go to" singles for radio stations that play '90s hits.

Australia's first (known) serial killer, William McDonald (born Allan Ginsburg, in UK) died in May 2015, aged 90 while serving a life sentence for luring men into dark spots around the inner city suburbs, then attacking them, cutting off their genitals and killing them. This, in the early '60s, scared the crap out of people, and the details of his attacks caused faintings in the court room when he was tried. [Coincidently looked a bit like notorious sadistic serial pedo/murderer Derek Percy, who died two years earlier in 2013.]

That's because one got a very special episode of [italic]Punky Brewster[/italic] about it, and the other got crickets because it happened around the time the Iraq War began.

by Anonymousreply 168May 27, 2017 10:34 PM

R163: I doubt that many people even remember the "Punky Brewster" episode (I sure don't) - though your connection of the Columbia disaster with the start of the Iraq war may be a little more accurate.

I think the Challenger explosion happened during a "simpler" time in U.S. history - a time when people's attention was less scattered. And the Challenger explosion happened during the more spectacular launch phase - a phase that attracts more cameras and TV coverage (the average person can't even see much of the descent of the shuttle back into the Earth's atmosphere - and the part that we can see is relatively boring compared to launch). The Challenger explosion happened at a time when shuttle launches were still being shown live; many people were watching it live, and experienced the shock of the disaster in real time. (I, myself, was watching it live - my school cancelled classes that day because of the icy, cold weather that was in the Atlanta area.)

These and other reasons (including notable crew members such as Ronald McNair and Christa McAuliffe) help make the Challenger explosion so memorable.

Some listed are very good because they really did dominate the news at the time but then someone will come along and list a clunker--like the Punky Brewster cancellation. Not one person talked about or cared about that at the time. So ridiculous to even mention.

But from the recent past--how about Black Lives Matter. During the election this was the most talked about movement. We even had Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem. Then after Trump won--silence. The didn't even bother to show up and protest Trump's election. In fact, the celebrities that reached out the most to Trump were African Americans like Steve Harvey.

Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, back in 1978. It was a HUGE debate that was constantly mentioned in the news.

[Quote]Before giving birth to Louise, Lesley Brown had suffered years of infertility due to blocked fallopian tubes. In November 1977, she underwent the then-experimental IVF procedure. A mature egg was removed from one of her ovaries and combined in a laboratory dish with her husband’s sperm to form an embryo. The embryo then was implanted into her uterus a few days later. Her IVF doctors, British gynecologist Patrick Steptoe and scientist Robert Edwards, had begun their pioneering collaboration a decade earlier. Once the media learned of the pregnancy, the Browns faced intense public scrutiny. Louise’s birth made headlines around the world and raised various legal and ethical questions.

It's because certain other news stories are still remembered, or taught to us, many decades later, like the Hindenburg disaster, the Baby Lindbergh Kidnapping, and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. Why are those stories still mentioned, but not many of the others?

Yes, of course, R249, but the Hindenburg and Lindbergh’s Baby were way, WAY bigger stories than Blac Chyna, someone who I’m sure many don’t even know, whereas everyone in America knew about Lindbergh.

I agree that it’s interesting which stories stick with us and which fall away, but many of these stories suggested in the thread were never actually “big” stories.
