Actually, whilst no Ben Whishaw, Hemsworth has a certain humorous charm that comes across onscreen when he dips into a bit of irony and romance. And I thought him quite surprisingly passable in RUSH and BLACK HAT. The latter was an abysmal film but he did well enough. God knows, there are worse out there: Kevin Costner and William Shatner come to mind . . .

I'm over him because I'm over the Aussie takeover of L.A.. What is with these people. They all have this give-no-shits demeanor. I need them to start caring about something. Anything. At the very least the fact that our country is headed in a terrible direction. It's like, they're just here to use the system and get ahead in Hollywood with their superficial good looks and annoyingly blasé attitudes.

R74, you just don't "get" Australians. The culture really IS that laid-back. "No worries" is what we say when you say "Have a nice day".

However, the reason so many Australian actors are being hired in Hollywood is that they are almost without exception very disciplined about their work. THAT is what they care about. For most Australian actors it's not a business, it's an art form. They come back here and do theatre in tiny venues. (Also, Chris Hemsworth's good looks are not superficial - they go all the way through!)

Hollywood as a whole doesn't give two shits about Australia's political problems, despite the fact that it's made squillions off our attendance at movies since 1920, so why should our actors care about yours? Also, aside from Blanchett, Kidman and Simon Baker, nearly all of the successful ones are in Australia whenever they're not working overseas, and identify as living here. Maybe they think it's rude to comment publicly on the politics of another country.

Meanwhile, Australia is aghast at the direction in which the US is headed, which believe me, is on the news every night. We can all see quite clearly how close to autocracy you've got.

I've told this story in one of the many other threads about Chris Hemsworth, but 4 or 5 years ago I got to attend the launch party for Chris' film Rush because my boyfriend at the time worked in the PR Department of the Toronto Film Festival. Anyways, not only was he stunning in person (I was taken aback by how blue his eyes were) and smelt really good, he was super friend and introduced himself to virtually everyone in the room.
