Hemsworth is often at his best when they have him playing a lovable doof (one of the reasons he was a bright spot in Ghostbusters), and I think it's good that they've leaned into that this time.

Hemsworth is hot with short hair. He was exceptionally handsome playing Kirk's father in the Star Trek reboot when they styled him ultra clean cut. He'd look fantastic styled like Mad Men.
But - Thor has long hair. That's the character - Norse god, long hair.
Seems more like a desperation move to make him "hotter" than anything else (or he got sick of the hair and stipulated in his contract that he wanted to cut it).
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 10, 2017 4:07 PM |
I always thought Zach Snyder was so sexy and cute. I did some further investigating and he is married to 2nd wife and has about 18 kids between them. He looks so worked out and ready to rumble and he is usually solo or with cast members in pics.

R15 must have been asleep during Marlon Brando's scenes in Superman.
R17 Add Tilda Swinton to that list. It's prudent for actors, despite their prestige, to get into super hero movies. It's a steady paycheck and, depending on the actor, they manage to elevate the medium. The whole high art/low art divide is blurring. The entire cast of Oscar-baity American Hustle have played or are currently playing super heroes. From left to right: Rocket Raccoon, Lois Lane, Batman, Mystique, and Hawkeye.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 10, 2017 6:49 PM |

R21 I'm with you. I can't stand Zack Snyder's films, but I'd bed down with him in a second. You can find pictures of him working out and they're all hot. Have yet to see one of him shirtless, but there is this picture of him showing off his back tattoo.

[quote] Add Tilda Swinton to that list.
While Tilda Swinton was the only winner, the main Doctor Strange cast (Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor) were all Academy Award-nominees.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 10, 2017 6:54 PM |
In the current run of comics, since he lost the ability to wield Mjolnir, he's had short hair. I'm assuming they're going to bring in some of that story (seen in The Unworthy Thor) as well as the Planet Hulk story.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 10, 2017 6:56 PM |
The reason he has short hair is because he was coming off another role. They were starting production on Thor and they didn't have time for him to grow out his hair which would take over a year. And a wig would look silly.

I'm surprised there wasn't a glance at shirtless Thor in the trailer, the last two Thor trailers had a glance at Hemsworth's body.
Though Chris Hemsworth was bitching that Joss Whedon added a shirtless scene in Thor 2 (really bitch?), so maybe he keeps his clothes on this time.

The shirtless scene in Thor 2 was his idea.

R35 That's not the real reason; read R32 again. It's a symbolic and literal rebirth of the character, as can be clearly seen from him travelling to the underworld, losing his hammer, his trademark hair, his homeworld getting destroyed, etc.
I'm so excited for what Cate Blanchett will bring to the table. Even when she's just collecting a (huge) paycheck, she's still out-acting all others around her. People will fall in love her villain, I just know it. And it will probably do as much for female superhero representation as the WW movie.
Also, posters who call CB readers and CBM fans uncultured only reveal their own insecurities by lashing out like that. If you don't enjoy the genre, skip the thread, put it on ignore, whatever. I'm embarrassed to admit that at first, I thought she was just going to collect the paycheck with this movie and not bother acting-wise but from what I've heard in reactions to the trailer, she's giving it everything even in that one line she gets. Not to mention the superior face acting just before she shatters the hammer. She's a professional through and through and I'm a jaded cynic, is what I've learned from this trailer.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 13, 2017 2:55 PM |
I think most of the Name actors who sign onto these movies want to go a good job and not phone it in. Tilda Swinton gave a really great performance in Doctor Strange.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 13, 2017 2:57 PM |
Every Marvel Studios movie has been well-received by critics and audiences and is a big hit around the globe.
You make it seem like people are slumming it to appear, it's a great gig to get and a great way to show yourself to a large (and young) audience.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 13, 2017 3:02 PM |
The only Serious Actor that I've ever heard of that's had the poor sense to complain publicly about it was Glenn, and even she had to furiously walk it back.

R76 You're right. Even when they [italic]do[/italic] complain (Hopkins, Elba) they still do a good job. I guess the sheer size of the audience that will see these movies is always on their mind when they're doing this gig. Not to mention that CB movies aren't considered (such) a joke anymore like they once were.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 13, 2017 3:24 PM |
Right. Aside from the paycheck, some of the audience will probably eventually want to consume more sophisticated fare will know who they are.
Will Smith could have just sleepwalked through Suicide Squad, but he and Margot Robbie tried really hard to save it.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 13, 2017 3:29 PM |
Every actor in the world wants in on the Marvel franchise!
Not only because they can get exposed to a massive audience, but because there's a chance of a recurring role in a series of hit films - which means steady work with a company that spares no expense, and pay raises for each appearance. And fan convention appearances, hopefully a share of the merchandise with your likeness on it, advertising gigs because you're world-famous, etc. Marvel can get any damn actor they want.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 13, 2017 3:37 PM |

Isn't Marvel supposedly very stingy with their money??
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 13, 2017 3:47 PM |
To really nerd out I wonder what type of contract Blanchett signed with Marvel.
In the comics, Thanos was obsessed Death and trying to impress her. If they keep that story-line Blanchett's Hela is the closet thing the Marvel movies have to that. I guess we will know if Blanchett ever goes to film for Infinity Wars, unlikely, but it would be interesting.

Marvel was notoriously stingy when they were run by Ike Perlmutter, you are correct. In 2015 Kevin Feige was put in charge of the films though, so things have changed.

Why is Thor such a big deal all of a sudden? The first two Thors were bottom of the barrel for Marvel, both critically and financially.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 13, 2017 10:56 PM |
The first Thor did slightly better at the box office than the first Captain American movie. It was Winter Solider that made the Cap franchise explode, while Thor 2 was considered one of Marvel's weakest efforts.
There is some hype about this one because they brought in a director people are excited about, got rid of Portman's character, brought in the Hulk and Cate Blanchett. Kevin Feige has said they are trying to make this one the "Winter Soldier of the Thor" franchise. And the trailer seems to carry that out, it looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 13, 2017 11:06 PM |
Most Marvel fans agree that the first two Thor films are the weakest of the MCU, but the characters Thor and Loki are still well liked, the latter especially amongst fangirls. New Zealand director Taika Waititi, who's responsible for film nerd favorites What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, is at the helm this time and seems to be taking the franchise in an exciting direction. Chris Hemsworth is immensely likable as Thor and the fans have wanted a film that they can like as much as the character.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | April 13, 2017 11:09 PM |
The first two Thor movies are guilty pleasures of mine. Sure, they lack the depth of the better Marvel films, but they also lack the pretentiousness and muddled plots of big films like "Civil War" and "Ultron". They're just about a gorgeous hunk and his brother who ought to be here at the Datalounge, and the jock-and-bitch dynamic makes them fun!
I'm going to see this one. In the theater.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 13, 2017 11:12 PM |
R91 That's [italic]exactly[/italic] how I would describe both Thor movies: guilty pleasures. I know the majority of Marvel fans will say that they sucked ass (especially the second one) but they're my absolute favourites. And don't be coming after my taste levels, bitches! I just love these two movies for transporting me [italic]away[/italic] from this goddamn Earth, at least for a while. I love anything to do with Asgard so I'm sad that it's apparently getting destroyed.
Civil War is so beloved but I just don't care much for that dour stuff; all I want is some campy, harmless fun. Of course, people expect different things from CB movies so I'm glad there are so many options for different tastes these days.
R90 I remember when Hiddleston was all the rage back in the day when he came out in his costume and everyone lost their collective shit. And then he opened his mouth. Today, he's one scandal away from being a trainwreck so I imagine his publicist must be working like crazy.

Hiddleston has done a terrific job with him, he's by far the best MCU villain and a standout among the franchise actors. Pity the man doesn't seem to have any career smarts, he could be a terrific character actor but he's throwing everything away trying to be an action star.

That's not really as low a bar as you're making it out to be. They've cast all of the heroes really, really well. I mean, who knew I'd have seen four movies with ScarJo where I thought she was perfect? Even the minor characters were done so well that two of them got spinoffs.

Loki is too obsessed with Thor to have a girlfriend, R106. Which shows excellent taste on his part.

I have never read a DL CBM thread (and yes, I know that I haven't read all of them) that even approached having a majority of positive posts. Thread after thread, and post after post have railed against CBMs (both Marvel and DC) and have blamed them for the dumbing down of cinema in general as well as the loss of IQ points for the movie-going public at large. What I've regularly read on DL are posts similar to [italic]"...When will they stop making these??? I'm so sick of CBMs, which are movies for kids and basement dwellers, and dammit, I want movies for functioning adults !"[/italic]

R100 is right that being the best villain in the MCU is a joke, I enjoy their movies but there is always almost no characterization of the villain.
So far Loki is probably the only antagonist that actually felt like a real character you cared about.

[quote]Margot Robbie's pretty similar to Chris Hemsworth in that they could easily get by on their looks alone, but they manage to be charismatic actors and a joy to watch on screen.
I don't know Margot Robbie that well, but let's be honest, most of Hemsworth's career is getting by on his looks. "Rush" is a movie I enjoyed but it was still carried by Daniel Brรผhl.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 14, 2017 2:54 AM |
R115 You'll still find those disparaging responses in this thread, but yeah, I'm surprised by the overall positivity as well.
R119 Well both actors are primarily enjoyed because they're fuckable, but they're also talented. I thought Margot was just as good as Leo and Jonah in Wolf of Wall Street, and she did a solid job in the little seen Z for Zachariah. Rush was definitely Daniel Brรผhl's film. He came so close to an Oscar nomination. Hemsworth gets Thor's comedic timing down, which surprised me in the first film. He's endearing along with all the hotness.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | April 14, 2017 3:01 AM |
I think Hemsworth is doing as much as can be done with the role of Thor, who is basically written as a thoughtless meathead, while Loki is given all the good lines. Thor is a thankless role, really, both the writers and the comic nerd viewers identify with the clever, bitchy Loki, and he gets all the good lines and gets to put one over on Thor again and again. But Hemsworth isn't overshadowed, he brings a likability and enthusiasm to the role, he's endearing and occasionally funny as well as mega-hot.
Like I said, Marvel has done an excellent job with casting, they even found someone who could make boring old Captain America interesting.

R115 I enjoy this thread as well. The MCU reddit sub seems intimidating to me so I don't visit it very often and I can't think of any other place to discuss these movies now that the IMDb message boards are gone.
The snooty posters who bash CB movies aren't fun but I just block them. I find the constant comparisons between DCEU and MCU more tiresome, especially when they start denigrating one to somehow score points for the other.
Though what really makes me uncomfortable are those intense fans that will eat you alive. Someone has thrown an epic bitch fit in the Justice League thread over the WW costume change and I haven't been there since. The movie looks like fun, however didn't they have enough budget to put a decent wig on Hiddleston? Seriously it looks like some ratty korean hairpiece only Robert Redford would wear.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 14, 2017 6:35 PM |
R129 I think the shorter locks look nicer and the wig probably wouldn't flow in the air like it does in that shot if they moisturised it too much.
It's a long time until November; perhaps some queen on the CG team will catch that and moisture the wig in post. Otherwise, the whole damn thing might flop!
I [italic]do[/italic] appreciate the Redford shade.

But yeah, they did more with Iron Man and Cap than I ever would have imagined. Please cast Medusa the Inhuman very soon ( or is she owned by the FF studio fuckery? Consolidate it bitches)
I agree about the excellent casting at Marvel as opposed to DC: I've never been completely happy with a movie Batman, but I have loved how Cap, Tony, Thor, Loki, Natasha and others have been played by their respective actors

R135 It's a TV show, and I think it's because Inhumans play a huge part in Agents of Shield that you would have to intertwine the two.
Chris Hemsworth shines when he is given something comedic to do. Can't wait to see the dynamics between Thor/Banner/Loki. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie is promising.

Their characters dragged down the narrative and they felt they could make a better movie without them? The Thor/Jane romance was terrible. Natalie Portman didn't want to be doing this and was happy to be let go.

I never liked the Earth focus either. You have Asgard and so many other planets and realms and you keep showing us Midgard? Seems lazy. Of course, it was perfectly fine at first, in order to ground the story and the characters.

I for one am okay with color-blind casting of Asgardians, it's perfectly congruent with the idea that the old Norse God's were actually powerful aliens.

[quote]Waititi also explained another surprising decision from the Thor: Ragnarok trailer: why he and Loki are spotted wielding assault rifles.
[quote]"I think we really wanted to challenge Thor in this film. He's challenged more than in any of the other films," said Waititi. "He loses the hammer, which is the source of his power, and he's really on the back foot most of the film. We didn't want him to be able to utilize magic, or to have Loki's magic. We didn't want him to have too many advantages. He had to really find his way out of this predicament using his brain and using his friends."
That's the only part in the trailer that disappointed me. Even in fantasy, we can't seem to avoid those fucking guns. I will forever be a fan of melee weapons.

The Asir pantheon arose from the previous Vanir and Jotan ones, as Scandinavian culture evolved. People are understandably territorial about their cultural myths. Shit would hit the appropriation fan if Yemaya and Chango were cast as white people in movies, so it shouldn't have been surprising that some people didn't want Heimdall's cultural background changed. I didn't personally have a problem with it, but I understand why it became a bone of contention beyond the fanboy community.

by Anonymous | reply 199 | August 1, 2017 10:14 AM |

If they wanted to reduce the whiteness o the F4, they should have either made Johnny and Sue the same fucking race, or made Reed Richards himself something other than white (Thing is orange, so the actor's race doesn't matter). I was ridiculous to make ONE of the Storm siblings a different race instead of two, because obviously Hollywood only wants one POC on a four-person team, and of course Hollywood wants to keep the team leader white and straight. So I'm fine with non-traditional casting, but it's possible to do it wrong and they did.

by Anonymous | reply 213 | August 2, 2017 2:43 AM |
Obviously Superman can't be anything but white, R213, his square-jawed blue-eyed looks are even more iconic than the suit! You've just got to have an actor with that look, even if you've got to slap blue contacts in his eyes.
But... I'm okay with a Semitic Wonder Woman, because she looked and sounded like she was from the eastern Med, an she had the flowing dark hair and something resembling the right build. But Batman... the Batman costume is what makes the character iconic, not Bruce Wayne's looks. He's been played by actors will all sorts of builds and hair color, I don't see why there couldn't be variations in skin color as well. Really, I think a Batman could be any color, as long as he fits into the suit an has that old-money polish.

Can't wait for promo interviews in about 2-3 weeks, since the movie comes out end October in non-USA countries. Mark Ruffalo is looking very fine. My type of pocket gay. Uh guy.

Oh-oh, the latest trailer reveals some last-minute changes. Hela now doesn't shatter Thor's hammer in an alleyway but in an open green field of some sort.

Cate's really having a marvelous time gnawing into that scenery like a beaver, isn't she?
by Anonymous | reply 219 | October 7, 2017 10:30 AM |
R219 She really is. Waititi probably told her not to hold back in any way, shape or form. And I'm [italic]living[/italic] for that accent!

To the other two people following this thread (lol): I thought the st would appear at NY Comic Con this weekend, but looks like a no.
Perfect timing to shill. Although most nycc attendees would buy a Thor ticket regardless I suppose.

R221 What's "st"?
They're shilling the movie with #Helaween on Twitter, with new promo being dropped daily for a month right up until the movie's release. But I've been so excited since the movie's announcement by Feige that I don't need any more nudging to see it!
by Anonymous | reply 222 | October 7, 2017 7:05 PM |
Yeah with this director and Cate Blanchett being brought on board I was excited about this movie, and the trailer was just as promising as I had hoped.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | October 7, 2017 7:07 PM |
R222 st= cast. Didn't feel the need to correct that and add to thread post.
I'm barely seeing any new footage in the trailer. But I saw 2 seconds of Bruce topless, meeting Thor. Probably after he transforms back from Hulk.
Hope they play up the bromance, although Hemsworth-Ruffalo is an odd pairing (on the surface).

I am SO looking forward to this campfest!

Most of the time, I like it better when the big, fancy actors try to play what is ultimately silly material straight.
However, this is a character that clearly demands it.

First round of individual interviews, bitches. With Fox. The charismatic director Waititi is interviewed too, but my heart is with the cute and earnest Mark Ruffalo.
Sorry to the Blanchett queens, she nor Hiddleston are interviewed here.

^those quotes sound like it's just saying something nice about each supporting character, for the sake of saying something nice.
The hype is ON, since LA premiere was on 10th October. And Mr dopey Ruffalo instagrammed livestreamed the first 10 minutes audio of the film.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | October 11, 2017 11:10 PM |
R230 No, I just selected a couple of them which mention Cate because I'm a fan of hers. The author of the first quote, for example, follows that with another tweet complaining about bad lighting and the movie being too breezy.
I've heard this complaint a lot, i.e. that it plays like a straight comedy.

R231 thanks hunny. I'm in it for Ruffalo and I wanna know how many minutes his chubby face appears on-screen. I should read your link lol.
You're in luck. I'm sure no critic would say anything bad about Cate.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | October 11, 2017 11:27 PM |
I don't know about that; there are rumblings that she's outshone by Tessa Thompson, which is kind of a slight in itself.
But of course, she remains the main draw on the female side of the cast regardless.
by Anonymous | reply 234 | October 11, 2017 11:36 PM |
What? Newcomer Tessa with her fake accent on-screen? Maybe reviewers were just hamming it up. Cate has the distinction of being the first ever main female villian, so you have that to celebrate.

I'm so hungry for this movie I don't mind listening to the audio only of its first ten minutes.
Doesn't talent usually discreetly leave the theatre once the movie starts at these big premieres? Seems like a torture, having to watch yourself on screen.

Someone made this collage of Goldblum getting hotter with age and I agree!
Though do you think there are people who will go see the new Thor movie because of him alone?

R237 Goldblum has good plugs and a great personality. I'm watching firstly for Ruffalo, then Goldblum.
Silly vid of the cast playing rock, paper, scissors. Goldblum, Taika and earnest Mark make it fun. Hems and Hiddeston are kinda just blocks of wood.
Anthony Hopkins wasn't even at the LA premiere. Wtf.

Taika the director was "backstage" with Ruffalo (and on camera briefly) when Hemsworth was on Kimmel. And Ruffalo and Hemsworth always introduce him as "OUR director". Taika knows he's hot, hope he appears in more promo interviews/talk shows.

The spoiler they are talking about is from the interview posted at r246 actually.
It definitely is a plot point they wanted to be a surprise, but idk, I've said this before but IMO people freak out way too much about spoilers for these movies that are just light-hearted romps anyway. It ain't that serious.

This paragraph in Alonso Duralde's review for The Wrap makes me so excited to see Cate in this movie!
[quote]And if the old โBatmanโ gave us campy turns by Milton Berle as Louie the Lilac or Ethel Merman as Lola Lasagna, both Blanchett and Goldblum take full advantage of their Special Guest Villain status to go gloriously over the top. Goldblumโs trademark brand of stammering deadpan fits perfectly into this scenario, while Blanchett walks away with the movie; verbally, she plays like Dame Diana Rigg channeling both Joan Crawford and Eve Arden, and her physical slink (in one of Marvel Comicsโ most wonderfully baroque costumes) calls to mind the sexy evil robot from โMetropolis.โ

Yeah, although the average score (my preferred metric) keeps dropping. It'll probably settle somewhere from 7 to 7.5. It's hard for a comic book movie to get any more than that, anyway.

That was kinda a rhetorical question r278. Vakyrie is never depicted as bi in the movie. Yes the comic character is, but that is a different thing

Tessa Thompson was forced to clarify her comment that while in her mind she was playing the character as bi, that is never acknowledged in the film.

Yeah, it is a cop out to say you are 'playing it that way in your head' when there is nothing in the film that indicates that.
Joss Whedon called the movie a masterpiece, though not surprised he loves Taiki's sensibility.

Spoiler alert! R282 when we discover why she is an alcoholic, we see a flashback with another Walkyrie dying to protect her, there is nothing implying that she might be more than just a "friend", but she doesn't get much back story. But in general it was very entertaining, good music, a bit like in Guardians of Galaxy, I loved Hulk being somewhat articulate, and having a social life, I loved Anthony Hopkins playing Loki pretending to be Odin, and Hiddelston almost makes me forget his stunt from last summer (but not quite). I think the general public will love it.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | October 28, 2017 3:56 PM |
Just saw a cam version with some parts dubbed in Spanish. Jealous?
It's an entertaining movie but it really has no weight to it. Did no one on set bother to correct Chris Hemsworth when he said "reoccurring dream" instead of "recurring dream" or was that a setup for a later gag that I missed during the Spanish speaking parts? Or was it Waititi's tribute to Joni Mitchell?
I don't think the Mexicans I watched this movie with much liked Cate Blanchett but she was my favourite part of the movie. Hands down best face acting in the biz.
I know Anthony Hopkins hated this gig but I'll really miss him going forward. Also, a missed opportunity for a Rene Russo cameo. But she's reportedly a religious nut these days so perhaps it's for the best.
by Anonymous | reply 286 | October 29, 2017 1:45 PM |
Thanks to r286 I see that Ragnarok is now on 123. Cam version is too low quality for this flick. I'll be a sheeple and see it in theaters Friday to see Ruffalo's handsome face... And contribute to the domestic opening weekend.

Yeah, a few months is right, since Pine and ageing Pratt had their moment in the sun earlier this year. Poor Hiddles' fans. He was practically non-existent in promoting this film and his fangirls are clutching their pearls.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | October 29, 2017 3:42 PM |
Yeah, Hiddleston's turn as Loki has become stale. They have absolutely no idea what to do with him anymore. But he's a total pro - the way he delivers that "I've been falling for thirty minutes" line shows he's still giving it his all, regardless of the writing. Look to Anthony Hopkins if you want to see someone just cashing in their paycheck.
And I forgot to mention my biggest gripe with this movie and that's greenscreen in that infamous hammer-crushing scene. You have the whole of Norway to choose from and you decide on a CG meadow that looks like it could be set in Ireland?! Literally a cliff with grass and a little rock to sit on. What a slap in the face to the culture that gave birth to the Norse mythology. These movies make so much money and yet they can't afford to fly these people to Norway for one day? Lazy.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | October 29, 2017 3:55 PM |

Assuming that is true, it is very disappointing. There's a reason expensive location shoots work, see LOTR movies, and even something like "Mamma Mia" (when other elements were lacking, those locations in Greece were gorgeous and real).
by Anonymous | reply 295 | October 30, 2017 3:41 PM |
R295 You know, I'm aware Norway is [italic]very[/italic] expensive and it's not just the actors you have to fly there, but still. I'd even be fine with an Icelandic location, posing as Norway. It really is some of the worst greenscreen I've ever seen, especially when you look at how they tried to fill the spots in Blanchett's hair. That Waititi can't do epic, painting-like shots, only compounds the problem of that scene.
Anyway, that annoyed me a lot but when all is said and done, it's still only a technical gripe and one that certainly doesn't tank the movie for me. Other (brilliant) aspects outweigh this issue for sure.

[quote]Thompson even summoned the courage to pitch Waititi on making Valkyrie bisexual, based on her comic book relationship with anthropologist Annabelle Riggs. "There's this great illustration of them in a kiss," swoons Thompson, and while Valkyrie has yet to meet Annabelle in her Hollywood timeline โ and who knows if she'll get to โ she convinced Waititi to shoot a glimpse of a woman walking out of Valkyrie's bedroom. He kept it in the film as long as he could; eventually the bit had to be cut because it distracted from the scene's vital exposition.
[quote]"There were things that we talked about that we allowed to exist in the characterization, but maybe not be explicit in the film," admits Thompson. Pay attention to her agony in a flashback where Blanchett's Goddess of Death murders the rest of Valkyrie's warrior clan. "There's a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who's just been slain," says Thompson. "In my mind, that was my lover."

Ruffalo played Banner a bit like his role as Ned Weeks in The Normal Heart.
For how little promo Hiddles did, he had as much screentime as Ruffalo.

R314 yeah, I bet hemsworth "12 Strong" movie about 9/11 soldiers fighting will flop. It's angsty and overdone. Comes out January.
If he gets a 4th, fanbois will demand a 4th spidey (who's ageing out of teens look rapidly), 4th Cap America (who's so bored with the role), 4th Ant man (who knows how long Rudd can stay forever-young), etc

Taika Waititi is already saying he wants do another one. Hard to see Marvel not letting him.

Just saw this. Loved it! There's even a gratuitous shirtless scene and a Hulk ass shot. Cate Blanchett was good and even Stan Lee's cameo was cute. Totally not expecting the plot.
by Anonymous | reply 319 | November 5, 2017 8:54 PM |
It is a very fun movie, but I must admit that I'm surprised they didn't give Blanchett more to do. IMO it was another typical problem with Marvel movies where the antagonist doesn't get sufficient screentime.
[quote]and a Hulk ass shot.
Yes, the Hulk butt shot completely took me off guard, we laughed.
Taika's own character (the rock guy) was my favorite though.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | November 6, 2017 2:02 AM |
The comedy was a bit much. It was joke after joke after joke, even denser than the GotG movies.
by Anonymous | reply 321 | November 6, 2017 2:06 AM |
Yes, it definitely went for the comedic vibe but I thought it was executed well. At the beginning I thought some of the jokes were a little shaky but once it got going I was along for the ride.
The movie was unapologetically zany and IMO it worked. A very confident turn by Taika to completely reset what the Thor franchise is.

[quote]And I forgot to mention my biggest gripe with this movie and that's greenscreen in that infamous hammer-crushing scene. You have the whole of Norway to choose from and you decide on a CG meadow that looks like it could be set in Ireland?!
Agree with you that was sadly weak (in what was normally a visually gorgeous movie), but it was a very last minute scene change. You might have noticed in the previews the location where Blanchett breaks the hammer was different.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | November 6, 2017 2:38 AM |
R323 I know, I read an article where Waititi said he realized the intimate scene worked better in a meadow than in a noisy street in NYC, and I posted the first trailer which featured the changed scene at R218. Still, a missed opportunity to feature some epic Norway shots.

The critics' response to Disney mafia tactics intensifies.

I hope my spoiling Odin's departure at R286 hasn't enraged anyone but the writing was on the wall. And besides, would you really prefer him getting brutally murdered by a CG Josh Brolin in Infinity War over his graceful and poignant exit here?
I loved seeing Fenrir's fang penetrate Hulk's skin. It's the only thing that made that damn wolf somewhat scary. Have we seen Hulk bleed before in these Marvel movies?
And I have to say, Steven Strange's awful cleaning gloves are [italic]not[/italic] working for me. This goofy element of his attire should be left in the comics.

[quote]And I have to say, Steven Strange's awful cleaning gloves are not working for me. This goofy element of his attire should be left in the comics.
The gloves were not in the Dr. Strange movie, it was Taika that decided to add them in. Don't know if he will have them in Infinity War or not.
Gloves aside, I loved the depiction of Dr. Strange in this movie. It felt so mysterious and powerful and how the character is meant to be more than his own movie did (yes, it was an origin story, I know).
[quote]And besides, would you really prefer him getting brutally murdered by a CG Josh Brolin in Infinity War over his graceful and poignant exit here?
I found his death pretty lame actually. Hopkins seemed to phone in that scene and it just didn't work for me.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | November 7, 2017 1:52 PM |
Oh, yeah, Hopkins was so done with these movies in Thor 2 already, where he basically sleepwalked through the whole thing. His death was lame for sure and by his "exit", I was referring more to his final appearance in Thor's vision at the very end. The only emotional scene in the movie for me. It shows that gentleness and strength can go hand in hand and that Thor has a long way to go when it comes to wisdom.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | November 7, 2017 2:04 PM |
Oh, and I too loved everything about Dr Strange apart from the gloves. It's scary but also exciting that he's so much more powerful than Asgardian sorcerers. I want a rematch between him and Loki, though. Loki seems so cocky for someone who basically just does illusion work.

We'll have to wait for the Black Panther to see if it has some more weight to it but in general, I agree with this article. At some point, being a "fun movie" just isn't going to cut it anymore.
And Justice League looks like it'll be another "fun" movie as well.
by Anonymous | reply 330 | November 7, 2017 2:26 PM |
That is a multipage article I'm not going to read through right now at least, but while it is true that the Marvel brand is fun entertainment there were some movies (notably the Russo movies Winter Solider and Civil War) that I thought tried to be more serious than most of the Marvel brand. Those are the two people who are the Infinity War movies, so I would expect those movies to be along those lines.
But I don't think Marvel is going to suddenly change course into a product they are not. I mean DC tried to go dark and got widely panned for it and have since course corrected to be more like Marvel.

Disney blinks and backs down. So much bad publicity and for what? They punished LA Times out of sheer spite.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | November 7, 2017 9:31 PM |
I didn't catch Fenrir piercing Hulk's skin and I wonder if that'll have an effect on Brucie/Hulk in Infinity War. Poor Bruce already has PTSD from waking on an alien planet!
by Anonymous | reply 333 | November 7, 2017 10:23 PM |
I suspect the Russo's Infinity War movies will be weightier. They really did a great job combining action-drama with some comedic relief during Civil War.

The comedy in this film was so bad. Like bad sitcom level quality. Not even Jeff Goldblum could make me laugh. They really need to reel back the comedy. GOTG 2 wasn't that funny either.

Bendis left the sinking ship called Marvel. How sad. The Marvel films were getting stupider and now with his non involvement they are going to hell.

Recent marvel movies like Thor: Ragnarok, Spiderman: Homecoming and Captain America: Civil War actually sit among their most critically adored movies.
It is their older output that was considered weaker like Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World,

Bendis left Marvel because they had wrung all the creative juices out of him, not because it's a sinking ship. Anyway, here's an article about Waititi doing FOUR characters in the movie. I wasn't aware Korg was a fan-favourite? You know, Waititi is very charming, but Korg could easily be left out and the voice was all wrong. The voice was wrong for Surtur (Clancy Brown) as well.
He doesn't have the best instincts when it comes to CG characters, in my opinion.

[quote] I wasn't aware Korg was a fan-favourite?
Korg was hilarious, he was getting the most laughs in my theater.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | November 9, 2017 12:57 PM |
Really? The Mexicans in that cam version I watched didn't laugh all that much at his bits so I guess the humour didn't translate well.
I'll re-judge him when I see the movie the proper way. I still can't [italic]not[/italic] see him as a budget Groot, though.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | November 9, 2017 1:04 PM |
Murder on the Orient Express opened this week, and Justice League opens next week. That's some competition for Thor.
I hope for Taika's and Ruffalo's sake Ragnarok continues to make good $$, so Ragnarok can prove to mcu moneyheads and audiences that they can somewhat hold a candle to Iron Man, Captain America franchises, even GotG and stupid spiderman.
On the other hand, what do I care? I have no investment in Ragnarok (except Ruffalo's mainstream fame, which he deserves more of!)
by Anonymous | reply 344 | November 11, 2017 8:55 AM |
IGN video where he's replying to mean comments, Collider appearance... Waititi is [italic]extremely[/italic] busy promoting this on the circuit. I can't remember the last Marvel director who was so engaged in the promo push. And who could blame him? Every single additional million this movie brings in enhances his negotiating position going forward.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | November 11, 2017 1:42 PM |
Was. I think promoting Ragnarok is done, since it's already out worldwide.
Also, Taika knows he's charismatic on screen and gurl's angular face looks good, so why not promo more? It's also his first taste of Hollywood fame so it's delicious. Unlike hemsworth or hiddles who look bored in most of their promos.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | November 11, 2017 1:52 PM |
What's funny is that every subscriber/loyal viewer of IGN/Collider/the like yt channels WILL buy at least 1 ticket to Ragnarok. And justice league. And every superhero movie.
So it's literally promoting to the choir to come to church.

R346 Yes, that's exactly my point. He's doing his best to leave the best possible impression for his big break here.
R347 Yeah, I found that curious as well. Justice League influence?
