Survey: 20% of Millennials identify as LGBT

Twenty percent of 18- to 34-year-olds self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, according to a new survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of GLAAD.

The survey, conducted online, was conducted in early November and included 2,037 American adults. GLAAD released the findings in its “Accelerating Acceptance 2017” report.

The percentage of millennials identifying as LGBTQ far exceeds the percentages in other age groups — 12 percent of 35- to 51-year-olds, 7 percent of 52- to 71-year-olds and 5 percent of those 72 and older.

“This report shows a remarkable new era of understanding and acceptance among young people — an inspiring indication of the future. Though laws can be unwritten, hearts and minds in America have been changed for the better — and that is a reality less easily unraveled,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD’s president and CEO.

In another question, 84 percent of millennials identify as “strictly heterosexual,” according to the survey. Six percent identify as bisexual, 4 percent as asexual, 3 percent as strictly gay or lesbian, 2 percent as pansexual (not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender or gender identity) and 1 percent as unsure or questioning.

Four percent of respondents identify as transgender and strictly heterosexual, accounting for the differences in percentages in the first two questions.

Again, larger percentages of older populations identify as strictly heterosexual — 91 percent or higher in all other groups.

The numbers in GLADD’s report are far higher than other findings about the sexual orientation of the population.

According to a 2015 Gallup Poll, only 3.8 percent of the adult population identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Americans, however, estimated that 23 percent of the population was gay or lesbian.

A 2013 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that 96.6 percent of adults identified as straight with 1.6 considering themselves gay and less than 1 percent identifying as bisexual.

A slew of other polls, outlined by HeatStreet, found the percentages between 3.4 percent and 8 percent.

Well now that fat sex is queer sex...that number's gonna skyrocket.

by Anonymousreply 1March 31, 2017 8:46 PM

We all know how these bull shit polls are regarding ligabet community. I still remember that many years ago, when Ricky Martin said that 60 % of latinos in California supports gay marriage.

We all know how that turned out during prop 8 . Gay marriage was not able to be passed in one of the gayest states of the country.

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2017 8:46 PM

The sample size was only 2,037 people. With a population that small, the results could easily be very significantly skewed. Pick 2,037 people at random from West Hollywood and give them the same survey as 2,037 people from some far right conservative bible-thumping community and I bet the results would be a tad different.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2017 8:53 PM

I wish someone objective commissioner the survey. GLAAD is a gay organization so the poll seems skewed or biased

by Anonymousreply 4March 31, 2017 8:53 PM

R3, that's a typical sample size for national scientific poll. Actually pretty large

by Anonymousreply 5March 31, 2017 8:54 PM

Yeah, and we saw last November how accurate "national polls" tend to be. Pretty NOT.

by Anonymousreply 6March 31, 2017 9:00 PM

It's a Harris poll, which has a great reputation

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2017 9:01 PM

R6? Actually the national polls correctly predicted a narrow Clinton popular vote victory

by Anonymousreply 8March 31, 2017 9:02 PM

Reputation does not equate to accuracy.

by Anonymousreply 9March 31, 2017 9:03 PM

Here's something to ponder: You can make statistics say or imply just about anything. Assume that 100% of drivers wear their seatbelts 100% of the time while in the car. There will still be fatal traffic accidents. In that scenario, 100% of fatal traffic accidents will involve seatbelt use. Of course there would be MORE fatalities if no seatbelts were worn, but that is not the statistic at hand. And we are not discussing cause and effect, just a "true" statistical statement and the inference drawn by the reader of the statistic.

by Anonymousreply 10March 31, 2017 9:08 PM

If anything, it's well known polls always underestimate LGBT prevalence because it is a strongly stigmatized identity and behavior. This is a floor not a ceiling

by Anonymousreply 11March 31, 2017 9:17 PM

[quote] GLAAD is a gay organization

Not actually. Not anymore.

by Anonymousreply 12March 31, 2017 9:22 PM

Isn't this more of a fad thing with Millennials because it's the cool thing now? In 10 years time, most of these same people will identify as straight, make that "cis" because these are Millennials, and will be in a het relationship and the parents of one or two crotch dropping(s).

by Anonymousreply 13March 31, 2017 9:31 PM

It's an online poll...

by Anonymousreply 14March 31, 2017 9:36 PM

R13 Yes it is.

The 4% asexual is the first thing I would call bullshit. The term has lost it's meaning - asexuality used to mean total lack of sex drive, and it's always been known to be rare and mostly connected to some disorders like autism and retardation. Nowadays most people who identify as asexual have sex, date, masturbate and/or consume porn. Tumblr is full of these snowflakes. The truth is that they are just young people who are "late bloomers" sexually, or simply have difficulty coming to terms with their own sexuality because they are too immature/awkward/ashamed.

"Four percent of respondents identify as transgender and strictly heterosexual, accounting for the differences in percentages in the first two questions."

AKA autogynephiles, which is a fetish, not a sexual orientation.

by Anonymousreply 15March 31, 2017 9:48 PM

Hmmmm

by Anonymousreply 16April 2, 2017 3:57 PM

R13, being LGBT is not considered cool beyond a small subgroup of Americans. Even in the most liberal cities, same-sex couples risk death walking down the street holding hands. Fag is still the most potent slur hurled against boys and men. There are no active openly Gay or bi men in the big four professional sports. Most churches do not allow sexually active gays to join or be in leadership. Stop spreading ridiculous myths

by Anonymousreply 17April 2, 2017 4:00 PM

Poll is bullshit

[quote]The survey also found that 12% of Millennials identify as transgender or gender non-conforming, meaning they do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth or their gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity -- doubling the number of transgender and gender non-conforming people reported by Generation X (6%).

Is Asexual Really part of the community now? I miss the simple days where there were simply gays and lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 19April 2, 2017 4:04 PM

R20 Lmfao. GLAAD probably counts all gays and lesbians as transgender. They're desperate to get their numbers up.

by Anonymousreply 20April 2, 2017 4:06 PM

R13, it's not a fad to be gay but it is most definitely a fad to be "queer" or one of the gender binary snowflakes.

by Anonymousreply 21April 2, 2017 4:09 PM

If you read my post, r21, I never used the word Gay. Trans, queer and bi seem to be the thing amongst millennials. And I stand by my statement that it is a fad.

by Anonymousreply 22April 2, 2017 4:14 PM

50% of Millennials no doubt consider themselves "non-binary", "gender queer" or a three-toed sloth, which Millennials have about as much common sense as.

by Anonymousreply 23April 2, 2017 4:14 PM

Wowww

by Anonymousreply 24April 2, 2017 4:15 PM

How many identify as otherkin ?

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2017 4:18 PM

But I'd be willing to bet that in 10 years time these same three- toed sloths will identify as straight, r23. The only numbers that I do believe are accurate are the gay and lesbian. But with 4% asexual and 2% pansexual...it's a fad.

by Anonymousreply 26April 2, 2017 4:33 PM

Hmmmm

by Anonymousreply 27April 2, 2017 7:08 PM

Asexuals (even those who are heterosexual) want to be classified in the LGBT community because they feel they don't fit into the straight community either and the "normal" realms of heterosexuality. There is a lot of discourse going on with this.

by Anonymousreply 28April 2, 2017 7:12 PM

Asexuals belong

by Anonymousreply 29April 2, 2017 7:26 PM

More like trisexuals. Or is that "try-sexuals."

by Anonymousreply 30April 2, 2017 7:42 PM

Well, they're not.

by Anonymousreply 31April 2, 2017 8:43 PM

someone should start a thread about this from today's NYT

by Anonymousreply 32April 2, 2017 9:47 PM

Having a one-off same sex encounter doesn't make you bisexual. Although I'm gay, I'm calling bullshit on this. Particularly the non-binary crap.

by Anonymousreply 33April 2, 2017 9:56 PM

The bandwagon is getting crowded. But it won't last. And the asexuals can go (not) fuck themselves until they are discriminated against in employment and housing.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2017 4:37 AM

You do realize that there are gay asexuals, right R34?

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2017 4:51 AM

There exist gay asexuals. And not being in a heterosexual marriage or coupling can be grounds for discrimination in employment, housing, and other organizations. Even when employed they can decide not to promote you if you dont fit, regardless if you are 'obviously' gay or not.

by Anonymousreply 36April 3, 2017 5:02 AM

OK...R35 and R36...you all are just making it up as you go along.

How can there be gay Asexuals when Asexuality is supposedly a sexual orientation? You can't be Heterosexual and Bisexual. Or Homosexual and Heterosexual. Or Homosexual and Asexual. Pick one.

by Anonymousreply 37April 3, 2017 5:15 AM

You're as bad as someone who doesn't believe in bisexuality R37

As someone who is gay and asexual, I don't need to pick a side.

by Anonymousreply 38April 3, 2017 5:17 AM

Asexual means you dont wish to engage in sexual activity with another person (or animal or mineral). You can still have sexual urges and feelings, often triggered by something/someone you saw. An asexual can fansatise about others when they masturbate, and if they fansatase about same sex people, they are gay.

by Anonymousreply 39April 3, 2017 5:26 AM

So what, R38...sometimes you feel like dick and sometimes you don't?

You do actually have to pick one. You can't be both Asexual and Homosexual. Their definitions contradict each other.

And animal or mineral, R39? Really? If you are a man and fantasize about other men, you are a Homosexual. You may choose to abstain from sex and live a celibate life, but you are a Homosexual. Asexuality is supposed to be the absence of attraction, the absence of another sexual orientation.

Of course these definitions are confusing and muddled...because it's all bullshit. If you're attracted to people of the same sex, you're gay. Learn to deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 40April 3, 2017 5:39 AM

All you ever wanted to know about asexuality but didn't give enough of a fuck to Google.

by Anonymousreply 41April 3, 2017 8:12 AM

While I don't know for sure if the poll is accurate it's a nice development that people seem more easy and relaxed about sexual identity instead of being fearful and repressed.

by Anonymousreply 42April 3, 2017 8:29 AM

Looks like r38 doesn't understand the difference between being celibate and being asexual.

by Anonymousreply 43April 3, 2017 10:32 AM

You can become celibate at any point in your life for varying lengths of time. During the early 80's, lots of gay men who had been sexually active, became celibate due to fear of AIDS. Asexual means having no sexual desire at all, for anybody of either sex.

Can’t wait for stats on Gen Z

by Anonymousreply 47April 23, 2019 5:17 PM

Agree with R26, this will be 95% of them in 15 years:

by Anonymousreply 48April 23, 2019 5:28 PM

Maybe not.

Apparently, Millennials are having the LEAST amount of sex compared to the rest of the population. (I think that study was in the Washington Post).

Video games, social media, and depression leave a huge number of them celibate.

by Anonymousreply 49April 23, 2019 5:50 PM

Queer people don't have sex.

by Anonymousreply 50April 23, 2019 6:00 PM

R48, nothing wrong with that

by Anonymousreply 51April 23, 2019 6:16 PM

I don’t know why people here are so negative about this. It’s great to have more bi people because it means more people do not view same-sex attraction as weird or disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 52April 23, 2019 7:31 PM

People are more open to admitting sexual feelings for the opposite sex seems fine with me.

by Anonymousreply 53April 23, 2019 7:34 PM

I hope you find the woman of your dreams. Hope she doesn't mind your wandering eye.
