Some of my favorite podcast are asking listeners to spread the word about podcasts, so in that spirit, here's a few of mine...

Oh boy, I'm going through a golden age of podcasts, i rarely listen to music or the radio news while in my car. So here in my order of preferences:

1. Slate's Culture Gabfest - super smart hosts discuss arts, politics, etc. 2. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me - VERY VERY funny quiz show from NPR 3. 99% Invisible - design oriented show, topics tend to be very esoteric 4. NPR - Pop Culture Happy Hour - the weeks news in culture, news, and politics 5. TED Radio Hour - no intro needed 6. Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen - kind of a 20/20 for podcast always different things 7. You Must Remember This - Hollywood's forgotten history, by a fellow Silverlaker, Karina Longworth 8. The Moth - random mostly non-pros get on stage and tell their story, funny, sad, sexy, whatever 9. Risk! NSFW, the tagline is “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public.” I find the host annoying but the stories are fun 10. Criminal - the "Law & Order" of crime story podcast 11. The Truth - "is movies for your ears. We make short, often darkly funny stories that take you to unexpected places. Every story is different, and they're usually around 10 to 20 minutes long." 12. My Dad Wrote a Porno, season 1. Season two was just a repeat of season 1.

and obviously, This American Life Serial, season 1 ONLY. Season 2 sucked.

Yes, yes to Culture Gabfest, Pop Cilture Happy Hour and You Must Remember This. I'll check out some of the others. I listen to The Business every week and Daytime Confidential. Please don't judge me on that last one. It's a fun listen if you watch any of the soaps.

by Anonymousreply 1March 25, 2017 12:53 AM

DLers don't like people promoting stuff, OP.

You in danger, gurl.

(They also like lots of paragraphs - for easy reading).

by Anonymousreply 2March 25, 2017 12:54 AM

I keep seeing You Must Remember This recommended as a podcast, hell, I've even recommended it to someone. Suggest one episode number or title for me to start with and I promise to listen in the next 18 hours.

Someone on DL recommended Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast, and listening to it changed my life for the better. I'll recommend Peter Marshall's Hollywood Squares reminiscences, Mario Cantone's holiday episode where he performs a post-stroke Bette Davis duet with GG's Tony Curtis, and MAD Magazine combo Al Jaffee and Dick De Bartolo.

I love podcasts. Haven't listened to a single song during driving once I started listening to them. Here are some of my favorites:

Pop culture happy hour : pretty much the best pop culture podcast. Not too "deep dive" to make it padentic and boring but enough to enjoy.

This American Life, radiolab, wait wait don't tell me: NPR shows in podcast form so you can listen to them whenever.

99% invisible: design, architecture and other fun stuff like "copyrighting a sound" and "flag design"

Allusionist: words, the meaning behind words and such.

The memory palace: short touching stories by Nate dimeo (who is also currently the artist in residence at the Met)

Welcome to night vale : a surrealist serial radio play style podcast. Start from the beginning. It's weird and wonderful. All hail the glow cloud.

Serial: duh.

Criminal: stories about crime and criminals.

Invisibilia: from NPR and the woman who created serial. Haven't been updated in a while.

3. 99% Invisible - design oriented show, topics tend to be very esoteric

TMOS 'The Mike O'Meara Show' Mike is formerly 1/2 of Don & Mike. It's 3 straight guys sitting around busting each other's chops. My ex partner got me into them and I now end every day with my current partner listening to them. I also listen to Tom & Lorenzo along with various WNYC shows that are available as podcasts. Once ya listen to TMOS for a week.. you're hooked into their lives and it's a nice way to end the day.

thank you r6 !

i really did do paragraphs, hence the numbers, but I guess you have to hit the return key twice for it to appear as an individual line item. thanks, i really appreciate your help.

ANSWER ME THIS - British podcast featuring Helen Zaltzman, one of the funniest women alive. She's not a comedian. Just very quick and sharp. Helen and her co-host answer questions from the audience, sometimes it's historical questions, sometimes they're interpersonal advice questions. Also, Helen's husband Martin chimes in (he uses an echo effect on his voice for some reason)

THE WEEDS - If you enjoy political news and want more depth, go here. Took me a while to adjust to something this wonky after years of cable news. But you'll learn a lot about internal political stuff as well as gain some depth on public policy.

SAVAGE LOVECAST - A necessity for anyone. If you listen to 50-100 episodes, I guess you can stop there because there's only so many questions under the sun. Show is mainly people calling in to leave messages with questions and Dan responds. Sometimes, he'll get them on the phone to get more details. Straight/bi/gay/lesbian/Trans--everyone calls in with questions. The advice is 25% about sex but mainly about managing relationships and especially when to break them off. Dan's expertise is great because he doesn't come from a traditional background (like being a psychologist or something) he's just a gay dude who has been doing advice for 25 years and has interviewed tons of experts in various fields. You might find an occasional disagreement with what he suggests but it will probably be few and far between.

LifeAfter-a GE Theater podcast

"LifeAfter,” which it describes as a “Her meets Ex Machina” AI adventure, pondering the question of what happens to our digital identities after we pass, and what role AI can play in the grieving process."

R3 I'd suggest just starting from the beginning. But my favorites are Carole Lombard, and her series about Hollywood and the Manson Family.

by Anonymousreply 13March 25, 2017 1:45 PM

What if one Is deaf, OP? Your little list does no good.

by Anonymousreply 14March 25, 2017 2:23 PM

R3 You Must Remember This favorites - The Manson family series, Joan Crawford series and the most recent Dead Blondes.

by Anonymousreply 15March 25, 2017 2:53 PM

Ronna and Beverly. I could never love a man who doesn't love Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo.

by Anonymousreply 16March 25, 2017 2:58 PM

i must have been drunk when i typed linolteum knife movie review -- 2 beqr gays talking about everything and movies" but it should have been Linoleum Knife and 2 gay bears. very funny and relaxing.

also the Nerdist podcast.

by Anonymousreply 17March 25, 2017 3:49 PM

We Hate Movies - 3 guys from New York make fun of bad movies old and new.

by Anonymousreply 18March 25, 2017 5:04 PM

I have varying interests

For (liberal-ish) politics, I listen to 3 podcasts: The Weeds (which R11 recommended): wonkish but accessible, gets into the "weeds" of policy issues, focusing little on the "horse race" of politics. Slate Political Gabfest: Covers 3 issues in some depth this week. I particularly enjoy listening to John Dickerson (now of Face the Nation). Pod Save America: New, hot podcast featuring 4 youngish guys from the Obama administration. Helps give voice to the outrage against the Trump admin, pointing out the hypocrites, phonies, and utter cowards running our country.

For Bravo I love Watch What Crappens. Now that they're doing daily episodes, you can pick and choose easily which podcast episodes to listen to based on which trashy Bravo show you watch.

For Jewish topics (far more culturally Jewish than religious Jewish), I really like Tablet's Unorthodox podcast. 3 smart, funny hosts and interesting topics.

by Anonymousreply 19March 25, 2017 5:13 PM

Unexplained. I'm listening to it right now. Excellent.

by Anonymousreply 20March 26, 2017 2:37 AM

Welcome to Nightvale - Fictional surreal/horror/comedy. Start from the beginning.

Radio War Nerd - Wars current & historical, their politics etc. Cuts through a lot of BS.

Myths & Legends - Re-telling of old stories with a sprinkling of snark.

by Anonymousreply 21March 26, 2017 3:06 AM

You Must Remember This - Subject matter about old Hollywood. Although, when the host tries to speak in the character of her subject matter it's cringe worthy.

The Buss That Was - Another podcast about old Hollywood. Except it's two hosts instead of one. Each of them tells a story about a star from yesteryear.

Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast - Hosted by you guessed it, Gilbert Gottfried with a co-host. They talk about the stars of the past. They've done some really great interviews.

by Anonymousreply 22March 26, 2017 3:12 AM

Christ Datalounge, you really are off your-game. Pod Save America is THE place to be for politics right now, and you all better get your asses over there IMMEDIATELY. From the tree founders of Crooked Media......

Pod Save America A no-bullshit conversation about politics.

This is a political podcast for people not yet ready to give up or go insane hosted by Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer and Tommy Vietor.

Jon Favreau Jon Favreau served as Barack Obama’s head speechwriter from 2005–2013, a role that was more senior and influential than Jon Lovett’s. Since leaving the White House, Favreau has spoken about politics and speechwriting to audiences throughout the world, written for publications like The Daily Beast and The Ringer, and started a political podcast with three of his Obama friends in the ideologically diverse bellwether of Los Angeles, California. Jon grew up outside of Boston and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross. Follow Jon on twitter.

Jon Lovett Jon Lovett is a straight shooter widely respected on all sides. He earned this reputation (which is seriously fantastic, ask people) as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton and as a presidential speechwriter in the Obama White House. Jon has written truly excellent speeches, really great, on a range of policy issues. He helped write the president’s annual remarks to the White House Correspondents Dinner. Many people say Jon is one of the funniest guys to do this. The jokes are just terrific. In the years since he’s become a really big league writer in Hollywood. He had a hit sitcom on NBC called “1600 Penn” which was cancelled by some crooked, disgusting people. Totally rigged deal. Also Jon has a great brain. He went to Williams, OK? One of the top guys. Follow the better Jon on twitter.

Tommy Vietor Before seeking fame and fortune through podcasting, Tommy Vietor spent nearly a decade working as a spokesman for President Obama. Tommy served as President Obama’s National Security Spokesman, where he was the media’s primary contact on all foreign policy and national security issues, and as Assistant White House Press Secretary, where he handled foreign policy, education and labor issues. In case you’re still reading, he was also Obama’s Iowa Press Secretary during the caucuses and worked in his Senate office. He grew up outside of Boston and graduated from Kenyon College. Follow Tommy on twitter.

I'm loving The Witching Hour. I found it by accident and if you have a dark sense of humour it's the best. Especially the Queer Killers Quarterly episodes. I also love The Read, Feast of Fun & Gayest of All Time.

by Anonymousreply 24April 25, 2017 7:15 AM

BGM: Bitchy Gay Men Bad Gay Movies

by Anonymousreply 25April 25, 2017 7:44 AM

Casefile podcast - true crime stories that are told in a fascinating way by an Australian host with a thick Australian hot AF accent.

I could listen to him ALL day and sometimes I do.

I'm loving Benjamen Walker's Theory of Everything, its a mish-mash of topics, never know what the host is going to talk about. Really great!

by Anonymousreply 27April 11, 2018 3:54 AM

Atlanta Monster-Covers the Atlanta children murders and Wayne Williams

A Funny Feeling-Two comedians discuss paranormal topics with other comedians and actors. Even if you don't believe, the discussions are hilarious between the hosts and guests.

Raised by TV- Jon Gabrus and Lauren Lapkus' podcast on 90s TV and some mentions of shows from the 80s and they along with other comedians renact scenes from very special episodes.

by Anonymousreply 28April 11, 2018 3:58 AM

[quote]You Must Remember This - Subject matter about old Hollywood. Although, when the host tries to speak in the character of her subject matter it's cringe worthy.

The episode about Errol Flynn featured a voice actor who could not have sounded less like Flynn. He was doing this weird phony RP drawl-- I suppose because that sounds more villainous than Flynn's soft antipodean accent which is really quite pleasant to listen to.

by Anonymousreply 29April 11, 2018 4:01 AM

OP:

What a co-inky-dink! I'm asking some of my favorite podcasts to spread the word about listeners!

by Anonymousreply 30April 11, 2018 4:06 AM

hello, r3 regarding "You Must Remember This" start with "Charles Mason's Hollywood" rich in detail and very chilling.

by Anonymousreply 31April 11, 2018 4:15 AM

thx, listening to u must remember this

fab !!!!

luv hearin of new fun podcasts

by Anonymousreply 32April 11, 2018 4:22 AM

OP - you basic slut. WWDTM is fucking unlistenable.

I echo R28, Atlanta Monster was so good. Up and Vanished was also amazing....If you like murder, Sword and Scale has had its moments. Casefile is ok. My best friend likes My Favorite Murder, but meh. If hot, violent, bald guys are your thing (yes, please!), you can always give Jim Goad’s Group Hug a listen. I like it but I’m an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 33April 11, 2018 4:38 AM

Agree that the Manson series is the best of the You Must Remember This podcast. But the host’s whole accent, intonation, and funny voices when she “plays” different characters are beyond grating.

by Anonymousreply 34April 11, 2018 4:46 AM

I can't fucking stand Pod Save America anymore. I listened from very early, but the first 10 minutes are now dedicated to humblebragging about how famous they are. Their ads are fucking obnoxious and they are not a tenth as funny as they think they are. They are douchebros who have let fame go to their heads. There is far better political analysis other places that don't leave me lungeing for the 30 second skip button. Especially obnoxious are their increasingly frequent live episodes where the audience bleats at every stupid thing that comes out of their mouths.

Pod Save the World is still good though.

I'll throw in Reveal, On the Media and 538, which is what PSA wishes it could be.

by Anonymousreply 35April 11, 2018 4:55 AM

I listened to alot of true crime over the past two years, but I'm growing tired of it. It's become very formulaic and theyre all covering the same cases now. Two super exceptions from CBC in Canada which actually investigate cold cases.

Someone knows something (season two in particular)

Missing and Murdered: Finding Cleo.

M&M just wrapped and I was fucking blown away. Season one was good, but season two may be the best true crime podcast ever (yes, better than Serial season 1). They solve the case (I won't say how) and the final episode maybe the most poignant episode of a podcast I've ever heard. I'm pretty jaded because I've listened to SO many crimes at this point, but I couldn't help but cry once it was over.

by Anonymousreply 36April 11, 2018 5:01 AM

I am not into Podcasts, but if will listen to one it will be Writers&Company. I prefer this interviewer to Terry Gross.

Criminal- not what I was expecting. It had an episode explaining 4 20. One about police dogs. Some deal with dark subjects but some are relatively light.

Science vs.

You Must Remember This- the Charles Mansons Hollywood, The Blacklist and Star Wars (stars durning WW2) were my faves.

by Anonymousreply 38April 11, 2018 5:16 AM

Norm MacDonalds is good but rare. Gilbert Gottfried's is very good and so is Mark Maron's WTF.
