KC and the Sunshine Band's video for Give It Up combines sci-fi, fantasy, leather, a hot muscleman, and a creepy child.

by Anonymousreply 3February 21, 2017 11:01 PM

It's a pretty sweet song. I prefer the amateurish charm of the 2nd video.

by Anonymousreply 4February 21, 2017 11:02 PM

Oh wow! Very eighties...

by Anonymousreply 5February 21, 2017 11:16 PM

The second video would have not been played on MTV. The ante was upped by MTV and the second video would have been a nice promo on UK in 1978 but not on the MTV era.

by Anonymousreply 6February 21, 2017 11:23 PM

The weird little girl in the video cackling at the end looks like Jack Osbourne.

by Anonymousreply 7February 21, 2017 11:24 PM

Actually this was KC without the Sunshine Band. "Give It Up" was his solo hit from 1984. He looks pretty good in the video, being in his early 30's .

by Anonymousreply 8February 22, 2017 12:20 AM

KC is as gay as the day is long but I believe he never officially came out. The co-founder of the Sunshine Band, Richard Finch, a cute guy, is also gay but outed himself in an unfortunate way. He was caught having sex with teenage boys, 13 to 17, and was sentenced to prison for 7 years.

by Anonymousreply 9February 22, 2017 12:33 AM

Somebody saw me link "Give It Up" on the PBS disco special thread ...

by Anonymousreply 10February 22, 2017 5:50 AM

I am the OP and did not see the link, but I noticed that the second video (r1) has about 10M views, which made me wonder where everyone was coming from.

Why did PBS use Give It Up? It's from the eighties and was the last gasp of KC, years after the death of disco.

Still, it's a great song.

by Anonymousreply 11February 22, 2017 10:34 AM

Casey looks great dancing in through tight turquoise pants in the second video. He had recently recovered from a serious car accident and I'm surprised he can dance this well.

He was very good looking in the 1970s.

Give it up was NOT a KC and the Sunshine Band song, it was by KC only. His Sunshine Band had went the way of Wings and John Oates.

by Anonymousreply 13February 22, 2017 11:14 AM

It was credited to KC in the US and some other countries and to KC and the Sunshine Band in the rest of the world.

I don't see anyone but KC in the videos, however.

Did KC do anything between his duet Yes, I'm Ready and Give It Up?

Paging erudite KC fans everywhere.

I'm very intrigued by this whole idea that KC is gay.

I've posted a link from People in 1977 that mentions how he and Finch were "roomies" and did "nearly everything together". However, the article is also peppered with several references to KC's love life with women, which seems a bit "methinks thou doth protest too much", frankly. But if he is gay, then I guess that was considered a necessary evil in those days, if one wanted to hold on to one's career.

Also, the article mentions that KC was raised in strict Pentecostal home. Would his parents have approved of a gay son?

On a side note, I wonder if the reference to Gloria Gaynor as "Gloria Gay-nor" is just a typo or a transcription error from the original article, or if it was bit of tacit editorializing on the author's part.

Was just watching some KC & the SB videos today. Mostly performance clips, because they didn't start making the real "Mtv" style concept music vids until the late 70s.

The video to Please Don't Go (circa 1980) actually captures his peculiar performing intensity and the fervor of the song.

I saw him in concert in Las Vegas about 10 or so years ago at a corporate event. He was about the size of a small town at that point, coked out of his mind. I was supposed to do a meet and greet with him, but it got cancelled at the last minute. His singing was okay, but he just mostly sat at his synthesizer while his Solid Gold Dance crew danced like demons around him to distract the audience from his current condition.

R25 That's too bad. I hope he hasn't relapsed. I saw a recent-ish interview on YouTube where he was talking about having successfully gone thru rehab 20 or so years ago. He said he still had an occasional martini, because alcohol wasn't his problem. He mentioned in an Oprah interview once about having had a problem with prescription pills, etc., so I assume that's mainly what he was in rehab for.

Give It Up is my aural anti-depressant.

I read his 'rider' when I worked at venue and it included a room for him and his partner, this was almost 12 years ago, so I assumed he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 35July 15, 2019 1:57 AM

Although the songs from KC & the Sunshine Band are from a certain time, they have aged well. They were extremely well produced and arranged. Even Boogie Shoes with those fantastic horns still sounds so good today.

Interesting that the original version of Please Don't Go is slow compared to the '90s cover versions which were faster and house-y.

by Anonymousreply 36July 15, 2019 2:10 AM

Give It Up is such a great, fun song.

by Anonymousreply 37July 15, 2019 2:14 AM

I thought he was "not really out but everybody knows anyway" gay.

by Anonymousreply 38July 15, 2019 2:19 AM

R17 Interesting article. I agree that the groupie references are more than just a tad awkward. I find it odd that there are not even any rumors of KC dating any female singers or Hollywood starlets back in the day.

Give It Up is my favorite KC song. I remember seeing that odd concept video when I was a kid. It should have been a bigger hit in the US, and probably would have been if Epic had released it as a single in the US and KC didn't have to go through the ordeal of getting the rights back so he could release it himself.

by Anonymousreply 48July 16, 2019 5:10 AM

Yes, he used to live near Chapel Hill and would show up in town occasionally with young guys.

"Get Down Tonight" and "I'm Your Boogie Man" and "That the Way I Like It" and a few others are really truly great songs that still sound fresh and real.

by Anonymousreply 49July 16, 2019 5:32 AM

The first video felt so much like - ok, we have a rented mansion on Fisher Island for the night. What can we do to make this interesting?

Watch it again - it's kind funny from the perspective. KC is based in Miami - and it seems he never fucking leaves, so that's what I think of - make this 6 hour night rental WORK!

by Anonymousreply 50July 16, 2019 5:38 AM

R49 R50 I remember seeing that video when it aired originally, and I always remembered that little kid. I'm surprised he spent so much time in NC, since it seems like he's lived in FL his entire life. He's going to be performing in GA in a little over a week, and I'm debating whether or not I should go see him. He's getting on in years, and who knows, this may be my last chance, but I know it won't be anything like the shows from the 70s.

I've heard his music my entire life, but I've recently started listening to some of the lesser-known songs, and I'm gaining a new appreciation for the quality of the production and arrangements (especially the horns), and I actually think he is underrated as a funk singer.

by Anonymousreply 61July 19, 2019 10:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 65July 19, 2019 11:13 PM

KC was hot stuff.

by Anonymousreply 66July 20, 2019 12:18 AM

R56 Here's a twist:

"Finch co-wrote (with Harry ‘KC’ Wayne Casey) all five #1 singles recorded by KC & The Sunshine Band, but in a 1983 legal agreement Finch later claimed he didn’t fully comprehend, he lost his royalties to the songs he wrote with Casey and receives no money from them."

HOLY CRAP!!!!

by Anonymousreply 68July 20, 2019 6:26 AM

R46 I read an interview with KC once where he said that if someone were to play him in a movie, he'd pick Ashton Kutcher.

by Anonymousreply 69July 21, 2019 9:41 PM

Poor KC had to self-fund the video because his record label wasn't going to do squat for him, certain he'd never have another hit. But he did, one last one. Then he sank into a deep depression the rest of the 80s, but then found out there was still an audience for him on tour, and the band has been touring successfully since.

But, r68, don't feel too sorry for Finch, he ended up a convicted child-molester.

by Anonymousreply 70July 21, 2019 10:03 PM

I think Holiday was recorded before Give It Up was released.

by Anonymousreply 74July 23, 2019 12:37 AM

R73 Give It Up is a way better song, IMO. It should have been a bigger hit in the US. I'm glad it's having a bit of a revival.

I'm the above poster who wrote that his songs were insanely catchy. They were just perfect pop songs, the melodies and the hooks from each song just really got in your head. And they were such fun to listen to.

Another song from that era that was a lot like KC's stuff was More More More by Andrea True.

by Anonymousreply 77July 23, 2019 4:48 AM

The KC and the Sunshine Band songs are not cheesy disco. They're very well crafted pop songs with some funk and even R&B. Rich with horns, percussion, background vocals.

Like the Donna Summer thread, KC and Donna really made some incredible music that still sounds good today.

by Anonymousreply 78July 23, 2019 5:55 AM

R77 R78 I think of KC as more funk than disco, and I hate when they get lumped in with bands like The Village People (who WERE cheezy disco...) I also love a lot of Donna Summer's stuff.

I was just thinking of the Andrea True song today, when it came on an Applebees commercial, lol. I agree it was similar to KC in that there was a lot of catchy repetition that sticks in your head.

KC wrote most of the songs for the Sunshine Band, as well as a lot of songs for other artists (like "rock your baby" and "i get lifted" for George McCrae). Kind of like Barry Gibb, but unfortunately KC doesn't get the kudos that Gibb does.

by Anonymousreply 102July 28, 2019 4:11 AM

R56 I have a strong suspicion that Finch didn't actually co-write all of those songs. He did production & engineering work on them and played bass, but I have a feeling the co-writing credit was a lover's "gift" from KC. This is why I think that after they split up - personally and professionally - KC had no qualms about going after Finch's 50%, which he did successfully.

Just a theory.

He and the Finch guy actually started as songwriters and producers for other people (like George McCrae). The label they worked for eventually agreed to let them do a record of their own, and that's when they formed KC and the Sunshine Band.
Was that around 1995? He was in rehab in NC at that time, so that's probably why he was there and not in his beloved Miami.

R106 "Yes, I was in Chapel Hill around 1996-1997 and that's when I heard about him coming into town. Didn't know he was in rehab though."

Yeah, he got hooked on pain pills after his car crash in '82, and then when his dad died a couple of years later, he went on a decade-long cocaine binge.

It's a shame as he squandered most of his 30s, and what could have been really creative years for him. By the time he decided to get back into the business, he'd lost his looks and nobody really cared about any new material he had to offer.

by Anonymousreply 107July 30, 2019 3:56 AM

Drugs and booze really did a number on his looks, as others have said he was almost unrecognizable.

by Anonymousreply 108July 30, 2019 4:03 AM

R94
I wonder if KC and Finch were still a couple (& still living together) when that video was shot...?
I'm surprised Rick Finch hasn't written a tell-all book yet. He's been outed, so I'm surprised he hasn't tried to out KC especially after all the nastiness in court.

by Anonymousreply 109July 30, 2019 4:53 AM

It's amazing that KC is still alive at almost 70 after all the many years of drugs.

by Anonymousreply 110July 30, 2019 4:58 AM

R110 It really is amazing. He must have an iron constitution. Many people have died doing far fewer drugs than he did. He's also EXTREMELY fortunate not to have contracted HIV during that period.

by Anonymousreply 111July 30, 2019 5:15 AM

So, KC did drugs. Donna presumably did a lot of coke before she was Born Again and became a joyless fundie. Andy Gibb got hooked. Did any of the other Bee Gees do drugs? I can only imagine how drugs were served on platters back then.

by Anonymousreply 112July 30, 2019 5:30 AM

r111 and he was doing hard street drugs, too. Massive amounts of coke and god knows what else. Until well into the 1990s FFS! Yeah, definitely must've had an iron constitution. Some of his contemporaries were dead after just a few handful of years, or they were told they were going to die if they didn't stop. Crazy.

R112 KC claims to have been a "goody two shoes" prior to his car accident and his father's death, which is what lead to his heavy drug use. But still, 10 years is a long time to do coke on a regular basis and not suffer some permanent effects to your health.

He also claims he put on weight because he stopped smoking, and I guess there's not a lot he could do about going bald. But I'm sure the drugs didn't help.

Very true r114. Plus the natural effects of aging plus all that drug use does a number.

Has anyone seen his Twitter feed? He doesn't post that often, but it's kind of hilarious.

A shocking case of "cultural appropriation" LOL :

I've had a thing for KC since I first saw him on one of those Dick Clark new year's eve specials when I was a teen. Give It Up is one of my favorites, along with I'm Your Boogie Man (which I've always liked to play at Halloween parties).

The Irish-Italian guys always get me, for some reason. Something about that combo that produces exceptional looking men.

KC was going for the Duran Duran look (I think it's the same outfit he wore in the video). It was hard for a lot of 70s artists to transition into the 80s.

Imagine what those two were like in the sack together! Damn---too bad there weren't celebrity sex tapes back then!

This is a VERY sexy, soulful song. I wonder who KC was thinking about when he wrote/sang it?

OP, I don't think the little girl is creepy at all-- I actually think she's cute.
Did any of the other Bee Gees do drugs?

The Bee Gees touring crew nicknamed them Pilly, Potty, and Pissy. Maurice was an alcoholic, so he was obviously Pissy. I'd guess that Barry was the pothead.

by Anonymousreply 123August 5, 2019 10:00 AM

R123 Maybe, but Barry has had back problems for many years, so he may have been the pill popper. Maybe Robin was the pothead.

My mom and I were living in FL when KC had his car accident, and I vaguely remember hearing about it. He kept it quiet in the press, but I may have heard about it thru my mom's friend who was friends with Teri DeSario's parents. I remember her showing us Teri's LP once, that I think Teri or her parents gave her.

Andy Gibb was into cocain and maybe worse (heroin?)

It's what killed him

by Anonymousreply 126August 5, 2019 11:21 PM

R126 Not sure how accurate this is:

"On March 10th, 1988, just five days after his 30th birthday, Andrew Roy Gibb died of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle which was caused by a recent viral infection. It was speculated in newspapers at the time that Gibb had died of a drug overdose. However, while Gibb did have a history of cocaine abuse, he had successfully overcome his addiction by the time of his death."

But, cocaine does damage the heart, so it could have been a contributing factor in his death.

Here's another pic of KC and Rick. This the first time I noticed that Rick is wearing a "RICK" ring on his finger, matching KC's "KC" ring that he's always worn-

R13 The first album Give It Up appeared on ("All In A Night's Work") WAS credited as "KC and the Sunshine Band" but it was really only nominal at that point. Finch was on his way out the door after helping out with Give It Up, and KC was making an attempt to distance himself from any disco associations which were kind of toxic at that point.

Give It Up also appeared on the US version of KC's "Ten" LP, in an attempt to give it another shot at the US charts.
Did any of the other Bee Gees do drugs?

There are anecdotes about people walking into Barry Gibb's trailer during filming of the Sgt Pepper re-make to find him face down buried in lines of gak. Which he would then generously offer up to visitors.

Maurice used to famously throw big private parties at his UK mansion in the 80s (NYE) exclusively for the A-list music set, where there was plenty of narcotics on hand. Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Elton etc were known to attend these.

by Anonymousreply 131August 11, 2019 4:29 AM

They all did coke in the 70s. I'm sure even Helen Reddy was hoovering it up.

by Anonymousreply 132August 11, 2019 5:12 AM

R130 Is there something "glowing" between his legs?! They should have used THAT photo on the Space Cadet LP cover instead of the head shot-- it would have sold a LOT more copies!

Ok, so let me get this straight...NOBODY is going to say anything about the picture of KC with his crotch lit up like a Christmas tree?!

SERIOUSLY?!

That picture deserves it's own fucking thread! LOL! R130

KCs "TEN" album is very confessional. It has song titles like "on the top" (which is what it sounds like), and another song called "nobody knows" has lyrics like: "nobody knows who I am...nobody knows about my secret life...nobody knows what I'm thinking..." etc. Very interesting.

R80 I just found this live vocal version of Rock Your Baby from 1981-- nice to hear KC singing it!
