In Peter Brook's Mahabarata, two clans of brothers fight for the hand of Draupadai, The Most Beautiful Woman in the World.

She enters from a corridor of dimly lit veils, and I thought, so let's see this "most beautiful woman in the world now."

Mallika Sarabhai.

Damn if she wasn't the most beautiful woman in the world.

She's a prominent women's rights activist in her 60s now but will link if I can find a pic from her glory days.

The trouble is, you can't separate the woman from the role that got her on this list. Take out one or maybe iconic roles, and in most cases there isn't much left.

Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not.

Grace Kelly/To Catch a Thief

Rita Hayworth /Gilda

I could go on forever, but there's almost always one picture that was lightning in a bottle, and the rest of their career was just one try after another to recapture it. I mean, would Grace Kelly been an icon based on High Noon or The Bridges at Toko-Ri ?

by Anonymousreply 58August 2, 2016 8:18 PM

Juliette Binoche

by Anonymousreply 59August 2, 2016 8:30 PM

Isabelle Adjani

The most interesting actresses have rarely been "perfect" looking. In fact, what is the purpose of this list apart from celebrating phenotypically fortunate but often dull screen presences. Life is too short for this shit. And I'm not old.

by Anonymousreply 66August 2, 2016 10:31 PM

Agree with R55. Isabelle Adjani. Exquisite. Stole every scene from Sharon Stone in Diabolique.

Madonna

by Anonymousreply 68August 2, 2016 10:45 PM

Evelyn Nesbit was never in the cinema. She was a photo model, not a movie star.

Incredibly, no one yet has mentioned Marilyn Monroe. She was considered the epitome of sexual beauty in her day, and remains one of the most iconic images of all time.

by Anonymousreply 69August 2, 2016 10:47 PM

I hope R68 is joking because no one in their right mind would ever consider Madonna beautiful at this or at any other time in her life.

by Anonymousreply 70August 2, 2016 10:49 PM

R32, that's bc only people over 70 think Liz Taylor was beautiful. She looks so ordinary to me. And please old people, enough with the "oh her coloring." Ugly is ugly no matter what color she has. My top three: Isabelle Adjani, Carole Bouquet and the sublime Jean Seberg. Not my generation but Jean is so angelic and classically beautiful.

It pisses me off the way people just throw lists of names on their posts to these "most beautiful" threads. Being *truly* beautiful is very rare; most of the women mentioned here are pretty, not beautiful. But it doesn't seem as if no one knows the difference. My list?

R113 What an odd thing to be pissed off about. Everyone sees beauty differently, there's no right or wrong. I personally find strong, interesting looking women more beautiful than what others see as traditional beauty. Doesn't make me right or wrong, that's just my taste.

You were the one correcting others on what constitutes beauty R117. You also said it pisses you off, then go on to accuse that it is an odd thing to be pissed off about. I laughed out loud. I was not pissed off. Deneuve is a dull and uninspired choice. Pretty.

[quote]Everyone sees beauty differently, there's no right or wrong.

by Anonymousreply 119August 3, 2016 10:20 AM

My point is that I think there is a distinct difference between beautiful and pretty/attractive. Most of the women listed here I consider merely pretty or attractive, but in the end it is simply an opinion. And everyone see's beauty differently. I personally am saddened to see only a handful of WOC's listed but lets be honest: not too many of them got to work in films.

A Thousand Ships, One Hundred Faces. Beauty in the Twentieth Century is a BIG book that covers this subject beautifully. There are ten women per decade with multiple photos and a historical essay on each woman. Some come from the world of society or modelling or the stage, but the majority are of course from Cinema. I think there is also a "hall of fame" or top ten of all time. The discussion of beauty - it's spiritual, artificial and sometimes trendy nature is juxtaposed with more classical ideas. One of the last of the great coffee table books on this subject before the plethora of available photos on the internet made this kind of book obsolete.

Sick of the Aishwarya Rai troll. That woman has light brown skin and non brown eyes. That is her "beauty". India has some of the ugliest "most beautiful" women of any country because of their obsession with euro features. Aishwarya Rai has bug eyes and an over prominent nose. She is not beautiful; at best she is pretty when photographed from certain angles.

One of the top five most beautiful women in a film I have seen is Billie Dove in Fairbank's The Pirate.

All she does in the film is stay below deck looking worried hoping that Doug will save her.

But the gorgeous two tone early Technicolor and lighting make her look impossibly lovely.

Watching her in that I kept thinking wow!

Talk about having faces.

by Anonymousreply 143August 3, 2016 12:26 PM

If we are talking film, we need to consider how beauty appears on the screen in a moving image.

A film persona emerges that can enhance, negate, or nearly nullify beauty in a still shot.

Elizabeth Taylor had a beauty that lent itself perfectly to film. It was nearly impossible not to look at her.

Marilyn Monroe might have been less beautiful but her magnetic presence on film made her even more stunning than Liz.

Capucine was the opposite. I love her regal look, but she didn't have the talent or charisma to hold a frame like Taylor or Monroe. Still, I count myself as a fan.

I would argue Grace Kelly is such a flat and uninteresting actress that her beauty becomes an human aesthetic equivalent to set design or outdoor scenery.

And I know how those sentences sound, so I'll Mary! myself right here.

I agree Deneuve's looks have always been overrated. Bad old fashioned nose job, and she got jowly really early - i was watching those Carson reruns on Antenna and she was on from feb 1980 - she already looked very aging, jowly, overall not great (and she was smoking to my amusement, back when guest smoked on talk shows)

Sophia Loren was another overrated one with that honker and overbite and in general very "cheap" look - doesn't surprise me she was a prostitute!

by Anonymousreply 145August 3, 2016 12:51 PM

R79, María Félix was indeed stunning, a true old-school movie star.

Most of her work is in b/w, but if you get a chance, see her in Flor de mayo AKA Beyond All Limits. The color photography will knock you out.

R137 I agree about Aishwarya Rai. Had she not had those light coloured eyes, she'd be nothing special even in Indian terms and they do have some beautiful women. Never has any person owed so much of what they have to an eye-color.

Neither a "personality" (Bette Davis) nor a "technician" (Meryl Streep) but searingly human and, in her time, a beauty. Few screen actresses can summon such authenticity. Anna Magnani...the non-actress (who went on to be actress) in Au hasard Balthasar. There are certain films with child/teen performances given before the actress has developed guile. Lilya 4-ever was one. The boy in Central Station. Somehow Liv held on to that core and elaborated it into her adult acting style. Perhaps an odd example but Emma Thompson in Wit had moments (not the asides) such as when her mentor (Eileen Atkins) read the children's book to her went to that place as well. At her best, Liv took your breath away not with Stanislavski tricks or emanations of a strong personality but richness and texture and a kind of tragic bemusement. She reminds me of my mom. They knew each other (Liv was much older) and I actually have a birthday card from Liv to her.

Loretta Young and Carole Lombard were two of the the most beautiful women of the 1930s.

And though their looks could be deemed as "classic" they were not bland and boring. They each had a unique beauty, unlike so many of the actresses mentioned here, especially from the 1970s-2000s.

Garbo. 100% All of these women are beautiful, most of them in a sexually fertile way but as for profound, otherworldly beauty, it has to be Garbo. She looked like a walking statue. She looked like a carving. To be considered "most beautiful", I think you have to have a very unusual, unearthly quality that is both pleasing to look at and unsettling at the same time. She had it.

[R172] I love the scene in Queen Christina where Garbo "memorizes" the room at the inn. Pity about her lover's distractingly contemporary speaking voice. Can't remember the actor's name--John Gilbert? She was such a treat in Ninotchka.

by Anonymousreply 175August 4, 2016 12:33 AM

"WRONG.

She made several films."

Films that amounted to nothing. Evelyn Nesbit's movie "career" was a joke. People just wanted to LOOK (she was considered the most scandalous of women) at her, so was in a few minor films to milk her notoriety for all it was worth. She was no actress. In fact she had no talent at all. If there was ever anybody who had looks but no talent it was Evelyn Nesbit.

by Anonymousreply 176August 4, 2016 12:39 AM

R176 She actually had talent as a model. Yes, there is such a thing. She had an unusual way of posing by staring down the camera, that pretty much changed art and theater photography trends after her.

More than that, she was an exploited teenager and didn't deserve to be looked at like a harlot by half the country, when she'd pretty much aged too much for Stanford White's tastes by 16.

Some women, such as the young Christie Brinkley, have that "generically beautiful" look reminiscent of Barbie. Infantile features (large eyes; thin, straight, short (but not too puggy) nose; bee-stung Cupid's bow mouth that is "tall" horizontally but "short" vertically) that are symmetrical and proportionate. Pleasant, but bland. I think the real beauties are the distinctive, striking kind.

I adored Kim Novak in Vertigo, as both "Madeleine" and Judy, and found her touching in Picnic, but there's something quite artificial about the way they made her up. Which is funny because in private back then she was a bohemian. No idea what motivated her to undergo the procedures that eventuated in the grotesque who appeared at the Oscars. She's a really cool woman, not really an actress (Hitchcock was operating her like a marionette in Vertigo), and had no need to mutilate herself.

For a relatively short time Judi Bowker had a stunning natural beauty. I suspect she drank.

"Cinema history?" HAHAHA! She was a nothing and nobody in films. Some figure in "cinema history!"

You must be the Evelyn Nesbit Troll, always extolling her beauty and "innocence. Yes, poor dear little Evelyn, exploited by her evil men like Stanford White and Harry Thaw, such an innocent littler flower. She wanted to marry White but he wasn't keen on marrying her, so he must not have been THAT evil to her. So she marrying the ugly, crazy Thaw, for his money of course. Still pissed off at White for dumping her, she told crazy Harry a tale of how White "ruined" her by taking her virginity and Thaw went even more berserk than usual, killing Thaw in front of a crowd of people. So I guess you could say her actions resulted in the murder of Stanford White.

Nesbit for years told a lurid tale of how White would have her nude and and swinging in a "red velvet swing" above him. Many years later she was asked about the infamous red velvet swing and said "I never heard of it." When confronted with evidence of her tales of the swing, she lamely replied "I guess my memory isn't all it should be." Or maybe she made the whole thing up.

She lied between her teeth during her crazy husband's trial, thinking that if she did she could divorce him and get a huge settlement. His family did pay her off, but not nearly as much as she was hoping for. One spectator said that underneath her sweet exterior there was an "ice cold brain." Another said that she had "the face of an angel and the heart of a snake." Both statements were true. '

The beauties from earlier eras didn't generally have nose jobs. Plastic surgery wasn't the big thing it came to be back then. They were NATURALLY beautiful. I think plastic surgery really took off in the eighties. Halle Berry and Michelle Phieffer are two examples of the trend; they're both considered great beauties but earlier photos of them reveals they had their noses redone and probably other things as well.

Why should someone who's had work done to her face be celebrated for beauty? That's as dumb as when people celebrated Pamela Anderson for her fake breasts in the 90s or those who celebrate Kim Kardashian for her fat-injected butt now. The doctors should be celebrated in those cases.

I prefer the natural beauties who were simply born stunning.

Nope, batshit crazy Harry Thaw was responsible for that.

R303 and quite a few of those you listed had kind of large noses. It might have worked for them anyway, but Audrey Hepburn for example had a total beak.

Also I don't think we should be counting reconstructive surgery as plastic surgery. Ann Margret was a natural beauty.

by Anonymousreply 310August 5, 2016 5:57 PM

Right must add Katherine Hepburn, hair piled high, simply stunning as she got older. Yet no matter how she aged she was still able to snare Cynthia McFadden - watch and learn Sarah Paulsen. Holland Taylor is fantastic for this day, but you missed the Queen by 3 decades.

Cosmetic surgery was being performed in the 1920s. Gloria Swanson, the silent film star, had a nose job.

There were probably more that we are unaware of because the studio had tight control over their image. I wouldn't be surprised if someone on R303's list had cosmetic surgery.

R329, aka Vanity freak. Monroe was a beautiful child and adult. You posted a distorted picture. Do you want to know how many men and boys Denise fucked in one night for coke and attention? I can tell you. And she had hundreds of nights like that. Denise was the biggest whore Niagara, Montreal, NYC, Paisley Park and L.A. ever saw. The stories will never go away except none but the sleaziest men even want to be associated with fucking her. Sad to say it was not for better parts, songs or career advancement. She would blow the parking lot attendant while she waited for the next one. She grabbed dick in parties, licked her lips like a $2 dollar whore and loved to walk around with cum inside her. Some damaged people need to seduce others to feel secure, she let everyone fuck her. She was a sweet girl with her eyes always glazed over looking for more. A dinge disturbed PIG woman. Jesus couldn't wash that away. She was diseased and sought the wrong help. Denise was never beautiful without a lot of makeup and she wasn't pretty for long.

R335 you racist piece of shit. First of all your precious doctor-created Marilyn was just as much of a whore and mentally damaged but this isn't about that. The fact is Norma Jean Baker was just a pretty plain girl before all the surgeries and vastly overrated afterwards. The fact is she wouldn't have had a career had she not had all those surgeries done to her face. It is therefore strange to celebrate her as 1 of the most beautiful women ever. No one who knew Vanity would ever say she wasn't naturally beautiful even without makeup. There have been many people over the years who talked about how even more stunning she was in person. She made her career off her NATURAL beauty.

Now back to Norma Jean's ORIGINAL unremarkable face.

This thread is ridiculous. Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most exotic-looking actresses who has ever worked in Hollywood---hands down. She might not be your "type" (she's not mine---I'm a big gay, but I have a type of woman, and the Snow White look just never did it for me), but no one else looks like her.

So, what is "beautiful?" It really is subjective---if I had to make a call, I would say that it's one-part charisma, poise, and allure, and one-part impeccably beatific, and/or NATURALLY exotic features (which is not to discredit anyone with a nose job, just someone who shaved a giant hook or shapeless pug nose into something utterly different). I think that beauty has far more to do with the ability to captivate than actual physical characteristics.

Vivien Leigh Greta Garbo These are old, today honestly not cinema great, but pure beauty on camera Debbie Mazar is stunning, met her in person at SOBE Fand W Festival, and she is a throw back to the to the real old Hollywood Glamour Stars of the past, Beautiful skin, piercing blue eyes, jet black beautiful coiffed hair, she is more stunning than she gets credit for, but she doesn't care! That is why I anoint her, hope you are on her Deb!

by Anonymousreply 363August 6, 2016 5:04 AM

The problem with the Asian girls that are being nominated on this thread is that: a) they're not captivating in any way, and b) their faces have been completely transformed. Eyelid surgery, sawing on the jaw bones, a drastic narrowing of the nose. They look like completely different people, and always notably whiter (they never ever rock their natural hair color or texture). And then we're supposed to agree that they're "the girl next door meets Chanel?" Yeah, one who spent $50,000 of surgery, and months laid up after v-line jaw surgery.

R364, you could say that about any of the ethnic women mentioned on this thread. Those who have features that are consistent with their heritage are ridiculed. It's clear that the concept of "Most Beautiful" on this thread is a Western one.

by Anonymousreply 378August 6, 2016 4:09 PM

Wino also had a nose job

by Anonymousreply 379August 6, 2016 4:26 PM

Everyone is ethnic, r378. I think you mean non-white.

And yes, by and by large the concept is Western, as are most of the film stars who we have been exposed to. It is not a surprise that most of the postings fall into that line. That said, I enjoy seeing ethnic diversity in the suggestions.

I agree that there is regular ridicule of people with non-white features, here and elsewhere, on DL. Posting multiple photos of Dionne Warwick absolutely has an ugly racist undertone, and the Streisand with the elongated nose reeks of anti-Semitism. The commentary aimed at Asians is pretty explicitly racist. There are white actresses posted here as a joke as well, though not with the same insistence.

I am not a SJW, but I do tire of this shit over and over on DL.

by Anonymousreply 380August 6, 2016 4:30 PM

I agree that the swipes at Warwick are blatantly raclist. As for Steisand I said nothing about her nose so don't put words in my mouth. If asked I would say her eyes were actually what bothered me the most.

by Anonymousreply 381August 6, 2016 5:03 PM

R380 yes preach it. I'm not sure why DL has attracted a fair amount of racists who exclude non-whites and then throw a tantrum when their delusional, ignorant views are challenged. Some of the white actresses mentioned in this thread are/were beautiful but plenty of them are/were average at best.

Marilyn had unattractively shaped eyes. She would do all these tricks with eye makeup, squinting, and head tilting to distract you from it. Her upturned eyebrows also gave an illusion of counteracting her downturned eyes. It's actually hard to find pictures of her with her eyes open and her head held at a normal angle. She was pretty normal looking before she got the surgery. Her surgeon gave her a beautiful nose however. Marilyn had a great body and a voice and personality straight men found sexy. I mean, Jean Harlow was considered sexy for her day too. The blonde hair helped both of them. Marilyn doesn't come close facially to people like Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Gene Tierney, Virna Lisi, or Audrey Hepburn in terms of beauty.

Jun Ji Hyun has had extensive plastic surgery. The on,y thing that she hasn't done is alter her jawline, which is very surprisingly common in Korea (a lot of Korean women have distinctively heavy, square-shaped jaws, and there are several surgeries and injection procedures to correct it).

Marilyn had her bulbous, wide-bridged nose made tiny and the shape was totally changed. Her nose was not small or nice at all before. She had at least two nose jobs. Hollywood execs were not impressed with her looks pre-surgery and she was described as having a "potato nose" and "weak chin." The surgeries, raising her eyebrows, and her skill with makeup made her much better looking.

Nose jobs could always be bad. I think Catherine Deneuve's was bad. It depends on the skill of the surgeon.

Jaclyn Smith, Amber Heard -- beautiful but there's nothing behind the looks, like empty shells. They both act like robots.. The charisma and talent is the sparkle that made Ava Gardner, Marilyn, Liz Taylor such standout beauties.

by Anonymousreply 490August 10, 2016 3:07 PM

Viv and Larry. That anti Marilyn berserk troll is kind of funny. Monroe was beautiful like babies and ice cream and the moon. Her loveliness maybe doesn't hold up to feature by feature examination, but there is no more documented proof in human history of a woman who was both casually and professionally beautiful.

Ava Gardner, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor and Garbo were the great beauties of the screen. Cheryl Ladd IS better looking than Grace Kelly and Jaclyn Smith was more beautiful than Gene Tierney or Linda Darnell. Some People have a problem with objectivity. Obviously there is more to beauty than mathematics.

Coloring, facial contours, eye nose lip chin ratio and possibly character has something to do with it. But not likely. Perfect beauty comes not often, don't confuse it with your crushes.

To each his own, I suppose.

Aside from her nose job (which 90% of the women listed here probably also had), I always found Winona very beautiful in a natural sense. With or without make-up, candid or beauty shot, they still look amazing.

I see some of the women here who, in my opinion, look way too over-plucked, tweezed, and artificial for my tastes, which I personally wouldn't classify as beautiful. I guess I'm just not into the old Hollywood pencil-thin eyebrow, pursed red lips and icy eyes look.

Give over it, dick head. Just because you don't find Winona beautiful, doesn't mean others don't. Beauty is SUBJECTIVE! So sit down and shut your pie hole and let people post their own god damn opinions in peace.

The only thing ruining this thread is your whiny bitch-ass who can't fathom that maybe we see beauty differently.

And here's a another picture of Winona just to piss you off.

Now let's see if you're going to continue to be a whiny little cunt and bitch even more, or actually be just shrug it off, say "not my taste," and move the fuck on like any sane, normal person.

Janbot is talking to herself again.

R544 , my post, well of course the trolls didn't get my nasty snark.

I nominated the 5 favs of 5 stans/trolls, who will shove their goddess into any and every thread possible ad infinitum. Sorry but none of the 5 are great beauties. But you'd NEVER LET US OUT OF THE JURY room until you have your prize for your diva.

But, were is the Liv Ullmann strain/troll? Silent lately.

R552.. Bitch, I'm a nurse. You are definitely feeling some type of way. It's me, AIKC R449, The subject of this wonderful thread, with 550+ postings, is 5 most beautiful screen goddesses. Not Winona Ryder fan crush. Winona is beautiful, still, but to hijack an interesting thread for your own psychotic fixation and ramblings, is unforgivable. Into Winona? Start your OWN fucking thread. Such inspired vitriol. You're quite a nasty, crazed, piece of work. You had to ruin someone else's inspiring thread, because you probably realized, in your manic state, 500+ posters, with interesting and varied opinions, ain't gonna be giving a good shit about Winona or you. Get a life you obsessive psycho. Worship my Scorpio sister from afar. The restraining order she wisely obtained against your sick ass, won't allow you in the same zip code. You and Winona, effectively ended an interesting conversation. Get help!

by Anonymousreply 559August 30, 2016 2:18 AM

R559-For someone so bent out of shape about Winona being mentioned here, you seem to be the only one still talking about her.

You're still bitching about how the 6 or 7 posts pertaining to her has hijacked a thread with over 500 postings--3 of which are from you bitching about her.

We get it--you don't agree she's one of the 5 most beautiful women in cinema. She's not a "goddess" to you.

Others disagree with you. Get the fuck over it.

by Anonymousreply 560August 30, 2016 6:10 AM

Ugh, can we please stick with the actual beautiful women? (Mentioning the same actress several times and posting multiple pictures of the actress does not make your point any stronger, by the way.)

by Anonymousreply 561August 30, 2016 6:34 AM

Has anyone said Vivien Leigh?

[quote] A Thousand Ships, One Hundred Faces. —Elizabeth Taylor made it for the 1950s, but was not one of centuries top ten.

This sounded very interesting. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. If you're still reading this thread, R133, any clues or an ISBN?

by Anonymousreply 563August 30, 2016 7:51 AM

Thank you R552, Vivien Leigh is quite exquisitely beautiful. Striking. Yeah Boo, you and Winona fans above are preaching to the choir. Vivien Leigh is herself a Scorpio like Winona. We Scorpio's know, being hot and sexy comes with the gig. Don't hate. Appreciate...Bo Derek-Hedy Lamarr-Gene Tierney-Grace Kelly-Jaclyn Smith-Katy Perry-Dorothy Dandridge-Ciara-Jamie Chung-Kendall Jenner-Lauren Hutton-Jean Seberg-Katherine Hepburn...Just a couple more Scorpio stunners. Yeah, we know.

R564, are you quite all right?

by Anonymousreply 565August 30, 2016 9:05 AM

Why wouldn't I be R565? I'm fucking bored as hell. Watching Mtv awards, and noticing a pattern in the choices. Thought I made my point. ^

I agree: Big Tit Women: Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Diana Dors, Raquel Welch.

Hedy was classically beautiful with no surgery. She was the most beautiful woman in Hollywood according to Lana Turner, "she couldn't act but she was breathtaking. She was like a statute. She was so beautiful it was sickening".

Hedy Lamarr, Gene Tierney, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Bissett-and in that order.
