CATS Movie Musical to be Directed by Tom Hooper!
Tom Hooper is attached to direct and produce a feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s musical “Cats” that is quickly coming together at Universal Pictures and Working Title, an individual familiar with the situation has told TheWrap.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for Working Title along with Debra Hayward and Hooper. Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the original “Cats” musical, is also expected to produce the feature adaptation, just as he did with Universal and Working Title’s “Les Miserables.”
“Cats” is based on T.S. Eliot’s poetry collection “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” First performed in the West End in 1981, the musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide which one of them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Hooper has been linked to a “Cats” movie for months, first by The Sun, and then by the Daily Mail. According to their sources, the director is in the midst of deciding how to approach the adaptation — be it with actors, CG-characters or a combination of the two, a la Jon Favreau‘s “The Jungle Book.”

This should be an animated movie, preferably an old-fashioned, 2D one - anything else will be a monstrosity.

Oh, darn. I was hoping for Sidney Poitier.

The musical (a revue, really) is just a string of unrelated songs about specific cats, with no libretto. It has no plot. How are they going to adapt that into a coherent movie?

I hope it stars real cats. My cats would love it. We'd be there first matinay.

I think that's the way it should be marketed R6. The theaters showing it would install little kitty booster seats in every other seat.

I was kind of looking forward to this movie and now I'm not going to see it because of this tool.

I'm only going if it ends up being "Cat!", the musical version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". There will be a big production number with Maggie throwing ice cream all over the "Little No Neck Monsters". Jennifer Hudson can play "Sister Woman" and get her own theme song.

It should be animated. No one wants to see that makeup up close.

This is the only musical Streisand should do. One song and they could use her original recording and add dialogue around it. She could re-record it but there is not much power in her voice anymore and all the high notes and belting is almost gone.

I’ll see it as long as they include “Growltiger’s Last Stand” with T. S. Elliott’s original words without redactions and the Italian Aria. Otherwise, it will be crap.

Can't believe how you can turn "Les Mis" - one of the greatest musicals (and my personal favorite) into a pile of unwatchable shit. But he have managed ... and will do again with "Cats".

They bumped Wicked for this.
Hopefully they are working on their age removing CGI for Cheno and Menzel and figured waiting is as good as rushing to put someone who is young but not really young enough into Wicked. I would rather see Taylor Swift in her pussy-cat lycra than Ariana Grande doing green against green screen. If you look at the decision to let Cats take Wicked's spot - it really doesn't seem as dumb.
Admittedly I liked Cats. It was nuts. This needs to be nuts.

R32 Why exactly did Hudson get this part, she is way to young for Grizabella? And what is she doing to the song here, is she Hathawaying it in hopes of another Oscar? There are so many other older actresses that would have been more fitting to play an aged out diva, hell have Cher do it.

This may have been posted, but they've already made one movie of it, a filming of the stage production. Walt Disney bugged the hell out of Eliot for "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," so much so that Eliot put it in his will that Disney would never get it.

Serkis in Apes is probably the best approximation we have, though I think they'll got for less realism. So they'll look cat-like, but the facial features of the actors will be preserved. The surroundings will probably be completely CG, like Alice in Wonderland. Only thing I'm having a hard time envisioning is the color palette as Hooper's films are rather muted.

I was the one incredulous that they wore those tight fitting suits and had dots all over them, but this says it’s so. I hope those ridiculous images of them leak soon. They should have gotten Julie Taymor to do this, she would have come up with some brilliant way to make them cats.
