CATS Movie Musical to be Directed by Tom Hooper!

Tom Hooper is attached to direct and produce a feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s musical “Cats” that is quickly coming together at Universal Pictures and Working Title, an individual familiar with the situation has told TheWrap.

Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce for Working Title along with Debra Hayward and Hooper. Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the original “Cats” musical, is also expected to produce the feature adaptation, just as he did with Universal and Working Title’s “Les Miserables.”

“Cats” is based on T.S. Eliot’s poetry collection “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” First performed in the West End in 1981, the musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide which one of them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

Hooper has been linked to a “Cats” movie for months, first by The Sun, and then by the Daily Mail. According to their sources, the director is in the midst of deciding how to approach the adaptation — be it with actors, CG-characters or a combination of the two, a la Jon Favreau‘s “The Jungle Book.”

Perfect director for this shitfest.

This should be an animated movie, preferably an old-fashioned, 2D one - anything else will be a monstrosity.

by Anonymousreply 205/05/2016

Oh, darn. I was hoping for Sidney Poitier.

by Anonymousreply 305/05/2016

Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 405/05/2016

The musical (a revue, really) is just a string of unrelated songs about specific cats, with no libretto. It has no plot. How are they going to adapt that into a coherent movie?

by Anonymousreply 505/05/2016

I hope it stars real cats. My cats would love it. We'd be there first matinay.

by Anonymousreply 605/05/2016

I think that's the way it should be marketed R6. The theaters showing it would install little kitty booster seats in every other seat.

by Anonymousreply 705/05/2016

I can't wait not to see this one.

by Anonymousreply 805/05/2016

You know they just gotta cast Stockard Channing as Grizabella.

by Anonymousreply 905/05/2016

Ahem.

by Anonymousreply 1005/05/2016

Is Joe Maginello too busy?

by Anonymousreply 1105/05/2016

Cats in “Cats” will be cat sized

by Anonymousreply 1204/03/2019

Oh holy crap, why? He can't direct for shit.

I was kind of looking forward to this movie and now I'm not going to see it because of this tool.

by Anonymousreply 1404/03/2019

I'm only going if it ends up being "Cat!", the musical version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". There will be a big production number with Maggie throwing ice cream all over the "Little No Neck Monsters". Jennifer Hudson can play "Sister Woman" and get her own theme song.

by Anonymousreply 1604/03/2019

An acid trip committed to film?

by Anonymousreply 1704/03/2019

Apparently it wrapped? So now they will animate? Or something?

by Anonymousreply 1804/03/2019

It should be animated. No one wants to see that makeup up close.

He's got quite a good track record for getting his actors awards and nominations

Prime Suspect 6: Emmy and BAFTA nominations for Helen Mirren

Elizabeth I: Emmys, Golden Globes & SAG awards for Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons

Longford: Golden Globe and Emmy for Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton, BAFTA win for Jim Broadbent, nominations for Samantha Morton & Andy Serkis

John Adams: Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy wins for Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, Golden Globe and Emmy wins for Tom Wilkinson and a SAG nomination

The King's Speech: Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe for Firth, Bafta and every nomination going for Bonham Carter & Rush

Les Miserables, Everything for Hathaway, nominations for Jackman etc

The Danish Girl: Redmayne and Vikander (bored now)

Cats: Nominations expected for Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift

by Anonymousreply 2004/03/2019

This is the only musical Streisand should do. One song and they could use her original recording and add dialogue around it. She could re-record it but there is not much power in her voice anymore and all the high notes and belting is almost gone.

by Anonymousreply 2104/03/2019

Not to be confused with DL fave Tom Hopper.

by Anonymousreply 2204/03/2019

Are Flan and Ouisa going to be in it?

by Anonymousreply 2304/03/2019

Filming has ended and no production photos have surfaced.

by Anonymousreply 2404/03/2019

In keeping with the current SJW mania, he must have a black cat, a trans cat, a powerful female cat, a cowardly white male cat, a disabled cat, and Jussie Smollett.

by Anonymousreply 2504/03/2019

I’ll see it as long as they include “Growltiger’s Last Stand” with T. S. Elliott’s original words without redactions and the Italian Aria. Otherwise, it will be crap.

Can't believe how you can turn "Les Mis" - one of the greatest musicals (and my personal favorite) into a pile of unwatchable shit. But he have managed ... and will do again with "Cats".

by Anonymousreply 3004/03/2019

They bumped Wicked for this.

Hopefully they are working on their age removing CGI for Cheno and Menzel and figured waiting is as good as rushing to put someone who is young but not really young enough into Wicked. I would rather see Taylor Swift in her pussy-cat lycra than Ariana Grande doing green against green screen. If you look at the decision to let Cats take Wicked's spot - it really doesn't seem as dumb.

Admittedly I liked Cats. It was nuts. This needs to be nuts.

by Anonymousreply 3104/04/2019

I don’t like it

by Anonymousreply 3204/06/2019

R31 agreed. Cats is bonkers.

by Anonymousreply 3304/06/2019

Why oh why oh why did this get a green light? Who is going to pay to see this shit?

by Anonymousreply 3404/06/2019

A lost opportunity--should have been Tobe Hooper.

HIS [italic]Cats,[/italic] I would have paid to see.

by Anonymousreply 3504/06/2019

Cats is going to be a huge success, because of its cast.

by Anonymousreply 36Last Monday at 4:12 AM

Is that Kang from TMNT?

by Anonymousreply 37Last Monday at 4:23 AM

R32 Why exactly did Hudson get this part, she is way to young for Grizabella? And what is she doing to the song here, is she Hathawaying it in hopes of another Oscar? There are so many other older actresses that would have been more fitting to play an aged out diva, hell have Cher do it.

by Anonymousreply 38Last Monday at 4:26 AM

Dench would have made a much better Grizabella

by Anonymousreply 39Last Monday at 4:30 AM

I'm ready for my close up, Mister Looper!

by Anonymousreply 40Last Monday at 4:31 AM

Is Rebel Wilson going to be a fat cat?

by Anonymousreply 41Last Monday at 4:35 AM

^^^ Yes, Jennyanydots! I’m all for it!

by Anonymousreply 42Last Monday at 4:41 AM

The two fuckables: Robbie Fairchild and Laurie Davidson (below).

by Anonymousreply 43Last Monday at 4:50 AM

He already looks like a cat.

by Anonymousreply 44Last Monday at 4:56 AM

^^^ Typecasting!

by Anonymousreply 45Last Monday at 5:04 AM

Based on my experience going to see the short lived Broadway revival, the audience for the movie will be filled with Asians.

by Anonymousreply 46Last Monday at 5:35 AM

R46 must be Asian.

by Anonymousreply 47Last Monday at 6:29 AM

R39 she was also the original but had to withdraw due accident

by Anonymousreply 48Last Monday at 6:32 AM

If only Lauren Bacall were still alive to do her "Fancy Feast" voice.

by Anonymousreply 49Last Monday at 6:38 AM

This may have been posted, but they've already made one movie of it, a filming of the stage production. Walt Disney bugged the hell out of Eliot for "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," so much so that Eliot put it in his will that Disney would never get it.

by Anonymousreply 50Last Monday at 6:48 AM
Why exactly did Hudson get this part, she is way to young for Grizabella?

They will look like real cats like "The Lion King 2019, not people in costume like the show.

by Anonymousreply 51Last Monday at 6:59 AM

Lion King trailer looks great. Not. Big live actrion fan but this one was my favorite as a child.

by Anonymousreply 52Last Monday at 7:32 AM

R38 at 37 Hudson is older than both Buckley and Paige when they originally sang the song onstage.

by Anonymousreply 53Last Monday at 8:28 AM

They will not look like real cats. They will only be the size of real cats. These actors are acting in the movie, not just lending their voices.

by Anonymousreply 54Last Monday at 6:05 PM

^^^ I’m all confused, they are miniaturizing them to cat size, but not animating them?

by Anonymousreply 55Last Monday at 8:53 PM
They will not look like real cats. They will only be the size of real cats. These actors are acting in the movie, not just lending their voices.

They were motioned captured. They will look like real cats.

by Anonymousreply 57Last Monday at 11:41 PM

I bet it'll look like Avatar.

by Anonymousreply 58Last Tuesday at 12:37 AM

^^^ So it’s going to be like that creepy Polar Express movie?

by Anonymousreply 59Last Tuesday at 4:23 AM

It’s like a bunch of Andy Serkises running around

by Anonymousreply 60Last Tuesday at 5:53 AM

I’m sorry, but I can not see Dame Judy Dench or Sir Ian McKellan done up in spandex head to toe with electronic dots on their face with motion sensing detectors cavorting around a stage like a cat belting out show tunes. Are we really sure this is how it’s being made?

by Anonymousreply 61Last Tuesday at 9:16 AM

Yes, that's why there are no photos.

by Anonymousreply 62Last Tuesday at 9:32 AM

Serkis in Apes is probably the best approximation we have, though I think they'll got for less realism. So they'll look cat-like, but the facial features of the actors will be preserved. The surroundings will probably be completely CG, like Alice in Wonderland. Only thing I'm having a hard time envisioning is the color palette as Hooper's films are rather muted.

by Anonymousreply 63Last Tuesday at 9:37 AM

I have a feeling the release date of this one is going to be postponed.

by Anonymousreply 64Last Tuesday at 9:49 AM

I think we'll get it in time. We'll probably get a trailer this summer.

by Anonymousreply 65Last Tuesday at 4:20 PM

Leaked images!

by Anonymousreply 66Last Wednesday at 10:35 AM

I was the one incredulous that they wore those tight fitting suits and had dots all over them, but this says it’s so. I hope those ridiculous images of them leak soon. They should have gotten Julie Taymor to do this, she would have come up with some brilliant way to make them cats.
