[quote] ‘He’s an American singer and is still around today. He is still going and has had a “wonderful” career.’
Smokey Robinson (Your Wonderful, Sweet, Sweet Love and he won a "Mr. Wonderful" award)
Frankie Valli (covered What a Wonderful World)
Stevie Wonder ("isn't she lovely/isn't she wonderful")
The rest would be members of groups. If they're still performing, they couldn't really be considered to have wonderful careers.

Neil Diamond's tour just ended a couple months ago.
Ray Stevens in touring right now.
Fleetwood Mac still tours.
That's about it, unless I missed someone. I'm thinking the implication that it's Diamond is pretty obvious here, but I watched the performances on YouTube and didn't see Claire in the audience.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||March 3, 2016 4:40 AM|
sadly it could be almost anyone in the 60s or 70s. I don't think anybody gave a shit. really. I think Roman Polanski was honestly shocked that anybody gave a shit that he raped some underage girl, because in general nobody cared then. sad but true. (and yes I know, movies versus rock music, but same thing. celebrities were supposed to fuck anyone they wanted, at any age.)
|by Anonymous||reply 42||March 3, 2016 4:43 AM|
I take back what I said about Neil Diamond, at least a little, because the article quoted in R7 refers to the singer's "wonderful career" -- "wonderful" is in quotes.
Stevie Wonder, then? Did they just change the age a little bit to give them some legal wiggle room?
|by Anonymous||reply 43||March 3, 2016 11:22 AM|
Maybe, it is a singer who has 'wonderful' as part of the title of one of his songs. Any ideas?

Frankie Valli's in his eighties.
Not Lou Christie. GIRL, remember?
I would have to go with "all of them that aren't gay because they raped boys, obviously."
I was surprised by that Bowie fucked little girls, but I shouldn't be. Twelve-year-old girls with borderline personality disorder and not very attentive parents were probably pretty much all you could get when you were out touring the provinces so I think they developed a taste for them.
Roman Polanski is a predatory piece of shit who required all his actresses to worship his tiny todger. My guess is that the thirteen-year-old's mother knew damn well what was up and figured pimping her out to influential men was just the way you move your kid up the Hollywood ladder, but she panicked when the daughter came back sobbing that the dirty fuck had actually drugged and anally raped her. She probably turned him in because she was afraid the daughter would talk and implicate HER.

Smokey Robinson and Frankie Valli have both been mentioned, and Valli DID have a woman claim she was "taken" by him at 16. I linked to that article. But he's in his 80s.
Richard Carpenter is another decent guess, and the Carpenters had a song called "Your Wonderful Parade."
Lindsey Buckingham might qualify -- he's not in his 70s but he's a year older than Stevie Wonder and Fleetwood Mac had an album called "Mr. Wonderful."
No "wonderful" Neil Diamond songs that I can find. (No pun intended.)
|by Anonymous||reply 49||March 3, 2016 11:45 AM|
Wonderful - the Beach Boys
|by Anonymous||reply 50||March 3, 2016 11:49 AM|
The Beach Boys were never on TOTP, see list of performers @ R7.
The Carpenters didn't appear in person, R7's list says their music was played & the crowd was shown dancing.
Fleetwood Mac was a music video, not a live performance.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||March 3, 2016 11:55 AM|
Good catch, R51.
Valli seems to be the best guess given the story that went around about him last year, but he's 81. The "wonderful" clue seems to point straight to Stevie Wonder but he's only 65. "Heartthrob" and most of the other clues fit for Diamond, but "wonderful" doesn't. "Wonderful" fits for Smokey Robinson, but heartthrob DEFINITELY doesn't.
Typical blind item adding in things to completely obscure who they mean. And it seems the one thing from the girl's diary that was leaked has been judged as "probably an invention" so this very likely could be, too.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||March 3, 2016 12:08 PM|
'has been judged as "probably an invention" so this very likely could be, too.'
The people who considered Claire' diary entries ' an invention' were the coppers who didn't bother investigating in the 1970's.
Endemic sexual abuse of kids took place in British public institutions such as the BBC, where TOTP was filmed in the 1960's , 1970's and 80's. The TOTP presenters were BBC employees, DJ's at BBC Radio One. They and the acts were treated like gods, and blind eyes turned by management and police to sexual assaults that took place even on camera. Jimmy Savile raped an 8 year old boy in his TOTP dressing room. The on set photographer used his dressing room to take porn shots of underage girls.
It means nothing that the police rubbished this kid's diary entries as 'fantasies'. Many police were bent at that time and could be bought off for a few quid and some tickets to a show.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||March 3, 2016 12:43 PM|
He'd be 80.
And he didn't rape Pris. She gave him blow jobs until they married, she said.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||March 3, 2016 12:43 PM|
Elvis would never rape a girl. He loved too much of his mother. That says it all.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||March 3, 2016 12:48 PM|
In the 70s those girls wanted it. It's not rape if the girl says yes.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||March 3, 2016 2:18 PM|
I agree with that R56.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||March 3, 2016 4:32 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 58||March 3, 2016 4:41 PM|
The diary apparently says that a string of celebrities "used" her (her words) and her mom reported the contents of the diary to the BBC, which did include stuff like being taken away and given drugs. The jury is out on whether it was consensual or not.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||March 3, 2016 4:47 PM|
I don't think the word "wonderful" is a clue. That is a person speaking, not a columnist writing a blind item and putting hints in sentence. A normal person saying "wonderful" i.e. they had a very nice, profitable career in contrast to the young person she knew committed suicide.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||March 3, 2016 5:16 PM|
r60 is on point.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||March 3, 2016 5:19 PM|
The word just doesn't happen to be in quotes for whatever reason, though. If the woman said "wonderful" with a certain inflection or with air quotes, then it becomes either sarcastic or a pun.
Anyway, I thought this was pretty interesting: the girl's death made the papers back in 1971. Apparently there was a family fight on March 29, 1971, and she killed herself that night. (I linked to copies of that article but the site is a Defend Jimmy Savile site so take the commentary with a grain of salt. The article seems to be real though.)
Per the friend quoted in the Mirror, she was with the famous star about two weeks before she died:
[quote]She told me she was going for a drink with this star. ... “After the recording she came to me and asked, ‘Can I stay at yours tonight?’ I said yes, and she said I’ve got to tell my mum where I am. ... Over the years I’ve thought about the alibi I gave her for that night and I wish I hadn’t. Within a couple of weeks she was dead.”
If we take that at face value and add in everything else we were told in the Daily Fail, there's really only one person it could be -- conveniently, it's the one person who the "wonderful" quote doesn't make any sense about, not unless it's "Oh he's soooo wonderful" kind of sarcasm.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||March 3, 2016 6:37 PM|
It's Bieber. there are people younger than him.

|by Anonymous||reply 64||March 4, 2016 12:30 PM|
Who does r62 think the person allegedly may be? I cannot figure it out.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||March 5, 2016 3:08 PM|
I agree with all of them.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||March 5, 2016 3:19 PM|
There are defend Jimmy Savile sites? Jesus fucking christ. I had no idea, I thought everyone pretty much knew what a scumbag he was and wouldn't bother defending him. Is it his family or something?
[quote] Please Robert Plant never raped a teen. Page is another thing though...I don't think he ever appeared on TOTP either, when in LZ.
Nope, it's not Jimmy Page, R28. There are too many stories from women he chased around hotel rooms and let go when they didn't want to fuck him. He's not a rapist. Led Zep were wild but they were actually decent guys. Page had a relationship with a teenage groupie named Lori Maddox that was characterized as statutory rape because of her age. It was consensual and Maddox has recently gotten some attention talking about how the late, great David Bowie took her virginity (before her relationship with Jimmy Page). She was one of the groupies with Pamela des Barres.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||March 5, 2016 3:38 PM|
Diamond, R65. International singing star who's in his 70s, American, still touring, former "heartthrob," and performed on TOTP two weeks before Claire killed herself. But the "wonderful" hint doesn't fit him at all.
I dunno, I suspect the details have been a little fudged in this news story, because it's almost like a blind item rather than actual news. And I can't get past the fact that Frankie Valli also fits except he's 81, but he was recently outed as someone who boffed teens back in the 1970s.

The Neil Diamond one is from the mid 1970s, after Diamond went completely fucko bazoo for a while and wore suit jackets and sunglasses 24/7. I agree with the guy upthread, in 1971 he was hot. Not so much a few years later.
(I was looking for the larger version of that picture and for some reason pictures of Terry-Thomas kept popping up in my search results. That's weird.)

Rape is about violence, it's not about changing your mind, or being drunk or make stupid decision nor is it about being underage. It is wrong to have sex with underage but it's not rape.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||March 8, 2016 11:29 AM|
|by Anonymous||reply 82||March 8, 2016 11:56 AM|
r81, are you deliberately being obtuse (Read: Immeasurably stupid)? Google "Statutory RAPE."
|by Anonymous||reply 83||March 8, 2016 2:40 PM|
DM is purposely blurring the lines between consensual statutory rape and violent rape. Claire apparently told people she was 23 (per The Mirror articles), she looked older than her age, and she had sex with this singer willingly, so I doubt there's going to be much outrage in this instance.
Not saying there shouldn't be outrage but this is kind of an iffy case. It's all rape, but society doesn't think "having sex 45 years ago with a willing 15-year-old who lied about her age and looked older than she was" is a huge deal.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||March 8, 2016 2:55 PM|
"Claire apparently told people she was 23 (per The Mirror articles), she looked older than her age, and she had sex with this singer willingly, so I doubt there's going to be much outrage in this instance."
How do you know what happened if you weren't there? Funny how some people here will shit on an 18-year-old who hooked up with a 15-year-old he thought was 18 on grindr....but straight men who do things that are much worse get a free pass
|by Anonymous||reply 85||March 8, 2016 8:37 PM|
I have no idea what 18-year-old you're talking about, and I'm not giving anyone a pass. We don't even know who it is!
And no, even with the friend's salacious Daily Mail version of the story, it's not "much worse" than any other instance of a 15-year-old having consensual sex 10 months before they're legally able to consent.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||March 9, 2016 11:21 AM|
r86, there was a thread here about several guys (one of whom was only 18, I think another was 20) who were arrested for hooking up with a 15-year-old on grindr. The 15-year-old claimed to be 18.

I remember watching a B-Movie on USA's Up All Night, starring Rock Hudson as a gym coach, and he went around boinking all the high school cheerleaders. I forget the name but I recall thinking, I guess they didn't care in the 70s if old guys fucked young chicks
|by Anonymous||reply 90||March 10, 2016 12:23 AM|
r88, the worst thing about that is that Ted likes to attack gays for their "immorality" - get off your high horse, dude
Steven Tyler is another one who banged underage groupies without really getting called out for it, but at least he's not a freeper turd like Nugent
|by Anonymous||reply 91||March 10, 2016 12:27 AM|
The Nuge and Jimmy Page were the worst two offenders in the underage girl area. BOTH were particularly fond of 13 year old girls and were not attempting to hide their obsession back in the early 70s. I know, I was there.
