Wasn't she gay ?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 6, 2016 10:51 PM |
Why did she kill herself?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 6, 2016 10:59 PM |
Phyllis Hyman was bi-polar, r3? Plus, she was addicted to drugs and alcohol. The woman was suffering throughout her life.
I did leave a link on here on why Phyllis Hyman committed suicide.

Phyllis Hyman was strikingly beautiful. At 6 feet tall, she was a sight to behold in her early 80s prime.

Beautiful woman and voice.

Phyllis Hyman, Hinton Battle, and Judith Jamison interview promoting Sophisticated Ladies on a short lived talk show hosted by Freda Payne called Today's Black Woman in the early 1980's. This is part one.

One of the great unique voices of the century--no one else I know has such a husky, sensual voice like that.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 9, 2016 3:46 PM |
I agree, r18.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 9, 2016 7:02 PM |
in interviews she would complain that she couldn't find a date because she was a large girl.
Her death was so heartbreaking

I wished that she was still here. Then again, I would have hoped had Phyllis Hyman stuck around that she would still be singing music for the grown folks and not for the younger folks.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 10, 2016 6:35 PM |
Bump.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 12, 2016 7:23 PM |
Finally, a DL thread that brings a smile to my face. I loved Phyllis Hyman and miss the gay era that she helped create.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 12, 2016 7:25 PM |
I have to say- I really love TVOne's series Unsung. Yeah, it is sort of a Wikipedia version of these people's lives come to life, but so what? It's great they're being remembered. And what I love about them more than anything is they really do celebrate the music. They do try and draw the viewers in by teasing scandal and shade (and rarely delivering), but the music absolutely is front and center (unlike a certain VH-1 show).
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 12, 2016 7:30 PM |
Me too, r29.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 12, 2016 7:42 PM |
I LOVE Phyllis Hyman. I often put her playlist on shuffle and just bliss out on that haunting voice. Puts me in a such a mood. She was a unique and serious talent very much missed today.

A couple weeks ago I watched the episode about Deniece Williams, and in the initial teaser, they showed her collapsing onstage as though it was some kind of horrific incident that changed her life, and they showed some woman basically talking smack about Williams, how she was not really a very nice person.
The former turned out to be Deniece falling off a stage a few years back (to no great damage or effect) and the latter was never shown in the actual episode.
I didn't mind because, as I said, I really like how they focus on the music, but I think it's silly to try and draw in viewers with deception. At this point, i think people know what the show it.

R28 I know she was gay but what do you mean 'gay era she helped create' ?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 12, 2016 8:09 PM |
R32, what are you talking about?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 12, 2016 8:10 PM |
Unsung, the show that's been mentioned in the thread about four times.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 12, 2016 8:11 PM |
Oh wow. Was there possibly a less CUNTY way to answer that question?

[quote] Oh wow. Was there possibly a less CUNTY way to answer that question?
No, you got off easy. I could have said- Unsung, the show that's been mentioned in the thread about four times. If you weren't such a lazy fucking cunt and bothered to read, you might have figured that out.
See, could have been much worse.

You type fat, R37.
And your post lacked context.

[quote] I loved Phyllis Hyman and miss the gay era that she helped create.
What 'gay era' did Phyllis help create? I remember Phyllis hanging out at a black gay club in L. A. but I didn't know about her personal relationship with a woman (or women) until after her death. She'd been married and in her (superb) live act her banter was all about men.
I saw her in Chicago @1988 and her performance was dazzling. She looked and sounded fantastic.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 13, 2016 4:25 AM |
Phyllis Hyman, to me, did not create the 'gay era' in my opinion. I would give that credit to Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Cher, Barbra Streisand, and Judy Garland.

This is video of the incident. Deniece fell quite a few feet off the stage onto a concrete slab floor. Thankfully, I think she only sprained her ankle and possibly her wrist, but it could have been far worse.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 14, 2016 1:22 PM |
She would have had a better career if she had changed that last name.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 21, 2016 8:38 PM |
"Gonna Make Changes" is the essential Phyllis Hyman track. She wrote it @1978. A year or so before her solo breakout hit "You Know How To Love Me." It demonstrates completely the staggering talent that Clive Davis thought he could make into Whitney Houston before he ever met Whitney Houston.
Stunning, melancholy, soulful and dramatic. One of a kind.

I've got the blues. Hate that summer is ending and I'm lonely.
So...I listened to Phyllis Hyman all weekend. I would have killed myself but her voice is so stunning it made me want to hang around.

Hmmm. This thread reminds me. Whatever happen to chrisette michele. She reminds me of this woman though not as striking.

I love her big, tacky 80s gem "Riding the Tiger"
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 25, 2016 4:40 AM |
Phyllis slaying on Johnny Carson. She really was one of the best musical 'dramatists' out there... few vocalists can imbue a simple song with nuance and story like she could. At times her material was a little basic but her voice always made it special, and she had an incredible personality, look, and charm to go with it.
I know that in recent times Jill Scott has expressed interest in playing her, as can Jazmine Sullivan (both of whom are phenomenally talented singers themselves).

Neither can adequately convey her physical charms. She was arrestingly beautiful.

Phyllis Hyman is more like an urban counterpart to Judy Garland.
Enormous talent. Adored by black gay men. Troubled, overwrought and self-destructive. Loved being with handsome men but also sought out females for emotional support. Completely devastating when singing a torch song. One of a kind. Died prematurely.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 25, 2016 5:00 PM |

Like all Clive Davis' ingenues whom he no longer has any use for. Look out Alicia Keys, you're next!

Yes.
There were levels to my Friday night cryfests in college, if a man done me wrong. There was the basic level. A slightly more melancholy level, with everyone from Dusty Springfield to Sinead O'Connor.
But Phyllis Level Breakup Music was in a class by itself. It usually ended up with me on the ground, screaming, shaking my fists in the air.
DAMN, her work is amazing.

If they do ever do a PH biopic, let's hope TVOne doesn't get their hands on it. The recent Miki Howard TV movie was pretty terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 25, 2016 10:58 PM |
I actually like the Miki Howard biopic on TVOne. I thought it was well-acted.
Yes, r65. That's where I was this weekend, lamenting yet another failed (albeit brief) relationship. As time marches on it feels like I'm destined to be alone.
So I listened to "Living All Alone", "When I Give My Love", "Gonna Make Changes", "Living In Confusion" and others in non-stop rotation. Her music is really tailor-made for these low moments. The beauty of her voice and her dynamic performances pulled me through.
