OMG...Remember Flipper?

Or am I now the oldest person here?

(It seems there was some kind of remake that I wasn't aware of).

I used to wait for the episodes where the father took his shirt off. Masterbation material! The hairless older brother, not so much.

by Anonymousreply 9January 22, 2016 12:49 AM

Brian Kelly was so much hotter than Chuck Connors (from the movie.) And he's the uncle of Broadway's Brian D'Arcy James.

by Anonymousreply 10January 22, 2016 12:57 AM

We should be eating dolphins, not playing and swimming with them. I had dolphin in Barbados and it was positively delicious.

[quote]I used to wait for the episodes where the father took his shirt off. Masterbation material!

Was it real dolphin R11 or the fish called dolphin?

by Anonymousreply 13January 22, 2016 1:15 AM

Real dolphin, you pick one out from the tank on the premises and they butcher and grill it for you right there.

by Anonymousreply 14January 22, 2016 1:33 AM

Brian Kelly was a very handsome guy.

However, why is it that they all looked so much older. He was only 33-ish when he got cast in Flipper.

In this pic from 1966, he's 35. He looks like what I picture 45 year old to look like today.

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2020 11:41 PM

From Wiki:

In 1970, Brian Kelly sought to change his image by playing the role of Robin Stone in "The Love Machine," based on the novel by Jacqueline Susann. Just prior to filming, he was involved in a motorcycle accident that left his right arm and leg paralyzed. John Phillip Law took over the role. Kelly—whom Susann had called "the perfect Robin Stone"—won a legal settlement in the case but the accident ended his acting career.

R41 Yes. And I blocked it. These trips down memory lane for old mediocre TV shows are growing very tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 45February 10, 2020 4:28 PM

Johnny Crawford also has Alzheimers. Dean Stockwell too. 😢

by Anonymousreply 46February 10, 2020 4:30 PM

Why don't you guys start a thread to ask about ALL these old shows instead of clogging DL with all these one-time threads. Ask people what their favorite kid-centered series was. Or do a poll with all of the titles. But this one-at-time shit is like death by a thousand cuts.

by Anonymousreply 47February 10, 2020 4:31 PM

R47 Threads like these are one of the reasons why DL exists, especially since the IMDb boards are no longer around. Threads devoted to older tv shows probably make up less than 5% of what's posted on here. Easy enough to skip over if you're not interested.

[quote]Well for starters that the lead actor endorsed Ted Cruz for President!

Total bullshit, Surviving Angel. You were obviously a little too hasty with your research. The star of "Gentle Ben," aside from the bear, was Dennis Weaver, best known for "Gunsmoke" and "McCloud." He was a lifelong liberal. More to the point, Cruz ran for president in 2016. Dennis Weaver died in 2006.

by Anonymousreply 52February 10, 2020 4:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 63February 10, 2020 8:58 PM

Luke Halpin was one of the Lost Boys on Broadway in Mary Martin's "Peter Pan," a role he repeated in the live 1955 and 1956 live TV productions. (Not in the 1960 videotaped version that was repeated several times over the years.)

by Anonymousreply 64February 10, 2020 9:24 PM

Luke Halpin (and two Luke Halpin imposters) on a 1964 episode of "To Tell the Truth," talking about his work in the original "Flipper" movie and an upcoming sequel, "Flipper's New Adventure." It's interesting that in the days before media saturation, despite the popularity of the first movie, the show's producers must have figured he probably wouldn't be recognized by most people.

by Anonymousreply 67February 10, 2020 9:54 PM

I was 11 years old when the Flipper series started. I loved the show. My young loins burned for Brian Kelly. I longed to run my hands all over his hairy chest.

There was a point after Flipper that Luke Halpin had aged into a very studly looking man. Of course age started taking its toll as it does with all of us.

The dark-haired guy, David Hedison, died this past July. I don't think he was included in last night's Academy Awards in memoriam segment, despite having starred in the sci-fi classic "The Fly," under the name Al Hedison.

by Anonymousreply 76February 10, 2020 10:43 PM

David Hedison was also reputedly gay.

by Anonymousreply 77February 10, 2020 11:49 PM

I never heard anything about David Hedison being gay, but his daughter, the photographer Alexandra Hedison, is lesbionic and was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres from 2000 to 2004. In 2014, Alexandra Hedison married Jodie Foster.

by Anonymousreply 78February 10, 2020 11:58 PM

The rumors about Hedison have been going around for many years.

by Anonymousreply 79February 11, 2020 12:32 AM

A blind gossip item (from CDAN, so more than a grain of salt is required) about David Hedison and Richard Basehart.

"The deceased older lead and the recently deceased younger co-lead had an unusual competition on this adventure show with science fiction and horror overtones, which was produced by this extremely successful movie and TV mogul . They would compete to sleep with whatever young actors came on set either as guest stars, regulars, extras, or crew. Neither man identified as homosexual, although there were rumors about the older actor earlier in his career. This was on the down low. Strangely enough, they never had any desire to sleep with each other. (Richard Basehart, David Hedison - Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (Irwin Allen - mogul)"

I was the same, R91. I was never interested in my peer group, only in grown men. Even in HS, the only fellow students I thought were attractive were the guys who looked older than their age. There were some very hot teachers, though.

R52, Dennis Weaver was handsome back in the '60s and early '70s. The picture below is Weaver with Beth Brickell, who played his wife on the show. I don’t recall her in anything else, although, according to imdb, she guest-starred in just about every TV series of the ‘70s.

by Anonymousreply 116February 22, 2020 9:42 AM

R85 Honestly, I think so many movies and TV shows have “homoerotic undertones” simply because any sort of friendship shown among men is regarded as ‘gay.’ Even when they are shown, as usual, doing ‘guy things’ like playing poker, playing pool, etc., some people always see “undertones” in men’s interactions if they aren’t talking about banging women. But if they do anything other than stereotypically masculine activities and show any kind of human affection for one another, then people see sexual attraction there. I think it’s pretty ridiculous. Some men have sex with men. Many do. Some men hang out with one another, not while golfing or bowling and drinking beer, and talk about things other than cars and sports and tits, and they’re not necessarily blowing one another.

Just like not all gay guys who are friends fuck, nor do they all sit around together going “Gurrrrrrl! Spill the tea, gurrrl!”

I did a short study abroad trip in college because a friend, who was dating a friend of mine, talked me into it and we stayed in bunk beds in a room with two straight frat guys. This was 20 years ago, when many young straight people were just starting to understand gay people are human beings. My friend was persnickety and kind of OCD, and he was obsessive about making his bed every morning and ironing his clothes even though we were in a beachside jungle. I’m...well, sloppy. But I’m also pretty gay acting. The frat guys interrogated us incessantly, which at first seemed like a gesture to show acceptance and then became annoying as fuck. They wanted to know why I, as a gay guy, am not as persnickety as my friend about being neat and tidy. They were SHOCKED when—after they implied it—we told them that no, we don’t fuck. We’re not interested. We’re friends. One of them said, “Why are you gay, then? Isn’t that the point, that you can have sex anytime you want with your friends?” We really had to educate them that gay people are just people who have normal, typical human to human interactions. And likewise, not all straight friendships are sexual relationships.

by Anonymousreply 119February 22, 2020 12:42 PM

R112... i hear you... we have gone backwards in many ways on what a man is including on film and tv... think about it, men like CLINT WALKER!... he would be seen as a "oddity" in today's film and tv world, perhaps even a "joke" and used as a punchline in a movie or tv, but in his prime he was seen as thee ultimate man, the ultimate man's man.. men wanted to be like him, women wanted to be with him!.. ....

today? eww, he's too big and muscular and tall, eww he has a hairy chest, eww his voice is too deep.... the metrosexualization of men in our culture and society is the only thing i can think of... let's face it many women if not most women want a boyfriend or a husband whose basically a girlfriend who just happens to have a penis too!...
