Manhattan Cable Public Access from the late 80s into the mid-90s?
WTF is that shit?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 29, 2015 8:07 PM |
Indeed. Cable access was so.... odd.
Mrs Mouth was one of the more psychedelic offerings.
In the dungeon with slave dale (a twink-ish slave hosting a variety show in leather hotpants)
Men in films (soft outtakes from terrible porn) narrated by Lou Maletta in full leather regalia.
and of course: the one and only Robin Byrd and the apocryphal Jeff Stryker interview...

It was community access - to allow the locals access to the corporate controlled cable.
During the day it was mostly community meetings and stuff then at night it went down the rabbit hole.

if i had ny cable access in the 80's and 90's i would have watched that shit like it was prime time. i love weird, stupid shit like that.

YEEESSSS!!! I loved the community access channel - Mrs. Mouth, Robin Byrd ,and most of all- all those crazy commercials for the sex phone lines and escorts. "Move it along , "pee girl" - Police officer talking to the girl popping a squat and peeing on the street- for the water sports phone line (straight one). Also, how about Sandy Kane's show??? THAT was awesome!!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 29, 2015 10:57 PM |
Sandy Kane! I had completely forgotten all about her.

[quote]In 1995, he was hired as the off-camera voice for Calvin Klein jeans commercials, but when Calvin found out Lou hosted a racy public-access show -- as complaints came in about the campaign's kiddie-porn undertones -- the whole thing was pulled, creating the kind of hoopla money can't buy.

Things like this made the world seem smaller and less cold and corporate. Maybe it was just a facade, but I miss it.

Mrs. Mouth was one of the all-time NYC cable access greats! She had cross appeal. Everyone in NYC remembered coming home drunk at 4AM and catching a gay guy with a woman’s face painted upside down on his chin eat pancakes and soda and laugh and choke through the whole thing. It was a cheap visual gag but it was hilarious! The episode where she tries to book an airline reservation is one of my favorites.

There’s another one where she books a reservation for Ruth Buzzi and Joanna Lumley at The Russian Tea Room that’s great but I can’t find it online.

There were 2 black guys on cable tv they used to spoof on SNL. Were they called The Love Brothers? Two Either Eddie Murphy or Tim Meadows did a character based on them.

One of those 70s skit movies, the Groove Tube, had a similar puppet face but it was a cock and balls instead of a mouth. Rumor was it belonged to Chevy Chase.

What a bunch of talentless hacks these local cable “stars” are. Amateurs.

Oh lordy how much I loved Mrs. Mouth! Who played her?
I also loved that Italian queen who made pasta in her East Village kitchen, dressed in his mom's 1960s outfits, mini skirt, broad belt and all. Glamour! Yumminess! Anyone remember who I'm taking about?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 9, 2021 11:23 PM |
Shout it with me. I love, worship and adore Mrs. Mouth!

Mrs. Mouth's helper on the show was my college roommate.

I remember watching her stuff her “face” at 3 AM and laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. She made funny crank calls too. This was late 80’s early 90’s nyc.

Atlanta used to have a fun public access show called [italic]The American Music Show,[/italic] starring and produced by the crowd RuPaul ran with in before he moved to NYC. It prominently featured the "talents" of The Singing Peek Sisters.

What were the names of Gail’s five children? I know Carmella named them after the ingredients of a coffee cake but I only remember little “Cinnamon” and “Bake Three Fifty”.
