Gay Comedians.

Who's gay in the comedy scene?

by Anonymousreply 146April 24, 2020 11:08 AM

Todd Glass. It was fairly big news when he came out.

by Anonymousreply 1September 2, 2015 2:20 AM

Unfortunately not Jeff Dye.

by Anonymousreply 2September 2, 2015 2:32 AM

Louie Anderson.

Seriously, some good ones at the link:

That comedienne who shan't be named lest her stalker return.

But, uh, yeah, Todd Glass is the only male one I could think of too.

by Anonymousreply 4September 2, 2015 3:18 AM

Tig Notaro, Ellen Degeneres, Ant

by Anonymousreply 5September 2, 2015 3:19 AM

Thought about this today. Bumping this thread.

Alan Carr (a British comedian) is gay. Julian Clary (ditto) is also gay. It's only a rumour, but Sean Lock is allegedly in the closet too or, at least, in public he's closeted.

by Anonymousreply 8January 23, 2018 2:59 AM

Todd Glass coming out. A lot of his comedy was about his girlfriend, remember.

Serious question, why do people give such lazy and insulting threads even one reply?

These threads are pure troll threads, put out by someone doing “opposition research” on Americans and especially gay Americans.

No wit, no insight from the op. Just probing on “what gay people do..” or how to identify (aka how to profile or how to impersonate) us.

Use discretion people and importantly use your brain. A real gay person or American wouldn’t need to ask such stupid questions.

by Anonymousreply 16January 23, 2018 8:44 AM

r8 Sean Lock has been married to a woman for some time and has three kids. He’s clearly very, very closeted.

Half his humor revolves around him being gay. It is like he performs in gayface.

by Anonymousreply 24January 23, 2018 11:49 AM

And, R18? You talk as if gay men have never trapped women into sham marriages before. Rock Hudson was married. As said in my post, it's only a rumour. I never said it was actual fact, but I do know "one or two" who work in that scene who claim it's common knowledge amongst comics.

by Anonymousreply 25January 23, 2018 12:27 PM

R24 could be on to something. Daniel Tosh is now 42 and never been married.

Simon Amstell is adorable.

He's also hilarious. Very talented. Saw his stage show.

by Anonymousreply 27January 23, 2018 4:09 PM

I'm pretty sure that sometimes playing gay is just a schtick for Daniel Tosh. It would be nice if he were gay, but I'm pretty sure he isn't. He strikes me as a guy who's pretty sure of his own sexual identity, so he easily plays gay at will.

by Anonymousreply 28January 23, 2018 6:02 PM

Yeah, someone who was actually worried about hiding his sexuality wouldn't play gay as often as Tosh does.

Gay humor is just one of goes his go tos, #CulturalAppropriation!!!

R15 you're boring - stop being so serious! Everyone knows DL is supposed to be taken Tongue-In-Cheek. (ass cheeks, if that's your thing)

by Anonymousreply 34January 23, 2018 8:29 PM

It's a very tough scene in general - gay or straight. I did it for about 2 years... mixed with some writing for a sketch comedy show. Just to get to be a writer took ages. Gay comedy doesn't go over that well with straight people because the in-jokes among gays have to be explained to straight crowds & it takes too long - doesn't work with the pace of standup. You can do general "dating humor" but that's mostly dull and it's hard to find new things in that topic. So, the only gay material you can do has to be overly simplified, and it feels like you're pandering for laughs & not actually being as funny as you can be with your (gay) friends. I hated having to dumb things down.

It was easier just to fall back on self-deprecating humor, and that seems to work anywhere.... but it gets old. I love how Joan Rivers would make fun of everyone and then rip herself apart just as easily. I was always inspired by that style - way more than some of the big male comics. Of course it's harder than it looks. I forgot the exact number, but I think a successful standup comic gets something like 10 laughs per minute, minimum. I was getting 4-6 ... I never had their pace. I tried... and sometimes people laughed...sometimes they just stared at me like a freak. And one time I was even kicked off stage! I did some routine about getting sex off craigslist & not knowing if i'd be raped or killed (which "added to the excitement")...and this pissed off the host, Ms. Carmen Esposito... long before #metoo). I have a few of them on YouTube still, but they make me cringe now - it's just so hard to watch back. At the time, I loved it though.

Anyway, I've been told I should consider it a compliment to have been kicked off stage by this hipster lez....

This was the first I'd heard that Bob Smith died. So sad. I remember seeing him as part of "Funny Gay Males" at the Duplex--I thought they were wonderful, and so different from each other. Smith's was the most subtle humor of the three and he was adorable in an Eagle Scout way. I also enjoyed his books. ALS is a hell of a way to go.

by Anonymousreply 42January 23, 2018 9:22 PM

I meant to add that Kevin Meaney came out - to himself, his wife and family - late in his career and then made it the central focus of his act. It was a different, more thoughtful presence on stage and off, and as a result he owned it honestly, with more nuanced material. He was still as absurdist as always but it was a richer dialogue. I really miss his crazy humor.

by Anonymousreply 51January 25, 2018 2:39 AM

R50 — Go back and check. I'm quite sure that Anthony Jeselnik isn't gay. Which is too bad—I'd really like to buttfuck him. He's not at all what you'd call handsome, but he's hot as hell.

by Anonymousreply 91February 18, 2018 6:21 AM

One of the pioneers that the gay community has already forgotten is Barry Steiger. Barry moved to LA, and Elaine let him put a gay comedy show in the Belly Room that ran for years. It was THE launching pad for gay comics in LA. Barry eventually was a recurring character on Grace Under Fire but we know how that show ended. I believe that he just gave up and moved back to Kentucky.

I was at one of the original organizing meetings for the the gay actors caucus, or whatever it was finally called, and listened to Jason Stewart, mentioned above, talk about how hard her worked and how he spent his energy clawing his way to the MIDDLE. The fucking middle! I pulled out my phone after the meeting and made arrangements to move back home myself.

Suzanne Westenhoefer would have died if it weren't for her diehard core of women fans.

Same goes for Kate Clinton.

Marci Coyote Rose just disappeared.

Every gay male comic, is a flavor of the month.

Men in general are flavor of the month.

Ahmed Ahmed, handsome straight Egyptian comic, flamed out with CAA representation.

Someone needs to reinvent standup.

I'll stop rambling so r91 can go back to listing comics.

Oh, and Todd Glass, you mother fucker, and Barry Diamond, fuck you both.

by Anonymousreply 92February 18, 2018 6:25 AM

God, I hate to have to add this, but Barry Crimmins is dead. I am crushed, he was my friend. A really good guy.

He wasn't gay, but I have to acknowledge him here as a great supporter of his gay peers. He was at the heart of the Boston Standup Comedy insurgence and helped mentor everyone who made it big, gay and not gay. He didn't give a shit about your gender identity and he'd go to the mat for you, regardless.

He was a brilliant political satirist, a deeply loyal friend/mentor, and a man of great compassion for humanity - filtered through his intense humor and dedication to justice. He was a true humanist. Shit, he should not be gone now. If you don't know about him, look for the award winning documentary, Call Me Lucky, that Bobcat Goldthwait produced about him. It's on Netflix and more.
