Judd Nelson, Judge Reinhold, Eric Stoltz, Charlie Sheen, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez

All these guys are still working today, but they were huge movie stars in the 1980s. They were the epitome of cool and today they do straight to video movies and TV shows.

The only actor I can think of who did not suffer the same fate was Robert Downey Jr. and I think that's only because of his family connections in Hollywood. His career is better now than it ever was.

by Anonymousreply 88April 3, 2018 3:58 AM

Of all of those actors, the only one I truly enjoyed watching was Robert Downey, Jr. I'm sure I'm not the only one. His success makes a lot of sense since he really was much more interesting to watch, even when his personal life was messed up. Good for him!

by Anonymousreply 1August 6, 2015 9:26 PM

Downey's connections are not with his family at all ..........it is with directors who think he is talented, like to work with him and recommend him to other directors ............... but really, right now, his main success is getting cast as 'Ironman' ...........other than that, nothing else he's currently doing has hit big.

I suspect soon they'll call for an Ironman reboot and cast someone else as the lead. He may still be around as Obi Wan Kenobi

by Anonymousreply 2August 6, 2015 9:27 PM

Andrew McCarthy does a lot of directing. He directed some of the OITNB episodes and I've seen his name on some other shows.

by Anonymousreply 3August 6, 2015 9:31 PM

I liked Andrew McCarthy alone among these names. I always wanted to suck his dick.

by Anonymousreply 4August 6, 2015 9:42 PM

Judge Reinold was the epitome of cool and was a huge movie star?

by Anonymousreply 5August 6, 2015 9:46 PM

What happened to Judge Reinhold? I heard he turned into an asshole. Is it true?

by Anonymousreply 6August 6, 2015 9:47 PM

Andrew is a terrible actor. He just signed a deal to write a kid's book.

by Anonymousreply 7August 6, 2015 9:58 PM

You say "TV shows" like it's a bad thing. I'm not a fan of Charlie Sheen, but he was the star of all three shiws he was on (Spin City, Two & A Half Men, Anger Management).

Emilio Estevez is a director/writer/producer.

Judge Reinhold is the worst of the names mentioned.

Ralph Macchio is one who should have had a bugger career. Look at the cast of the Outsiders movie, it's interesting to see who blew up and who's success was short lived.

by Anonymousreply 8August 6, 2015 10:08 PM

Sorry for all the typos at R8 -- I wish we could edit replies.

by Anonymousreply 9August 6, 2015 10:09 PM

Judge Reinhold is married to an über bitch who is also his manager. They are sort of the poor man's Randy and Evi Quaid. He did do a low budget film that was soft porn. Full frontal.

by Anonymousreply 10August 6, 2015 10:12 PM
I think that's only because of his family connections in Hollywood.

And Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez don't have family connections?

by Anonymousreply 11August 7, 2015 3:13 AM

James Spader could be included in that list.

by Anonymousreply 12August 7, 2015 3:20 AM

Ahem.

by Anonymousreply 13August 7, 2015 12:57 PM

Good point R11. And yes R12 and R13. I forgot about James and frankly didn't even think of John.

by Anonymousreply 14August 7, 2015 2:30 PM

Those guys are all losers.

by Anonymousreply 15August 7, 2015 2:49 PM

What is the story with Andrew McCarthy? The last time I saw him he looked like a skeleton. Is he ill? Does he follow some weird diet? Is he manorexic?

by Anonymousreply 16August 7, 2015 2:57 PM

Downey's coke habit is a lot bigger as well.

by Anonymousreply 17August 7, 2015 3:37 PM

Andrew McCarthy is a fine travel writer, but he is a terrible actor. Actually, most of the men on that list are pretty bad--Robert Downey Jr. is the only one with genuine acting talent, but he can only play one part, the lovable fuckup (i.e. himself).

by Anonymousreply 18August 7, 2015 3:48 PM

I don't think Judd Nelson was ever the epitome of cool. The only thing remarkable about him are his cavernous nostrils.

by Anonymousreply 19August 7, 2015 3:49 PM
What is the story with Andrew McCarthy? The last time I saw him he looked like a skeleton.

AIDS

by Anonymousreply 20August 7, 2015 4:08 PM

A lot of movie stars from back in the day transition to TV. I agree with R8 that it's not something to be ashamed of. Another actor who has done this successfully that you left off the list is Rob Lowe. He's done a few successful TV shows. Judd Nelson was just on Empire, which was a huge ratings hit, albeit in a smaller role.

Of the guys you list, all fit the teen idol category except for Judge Reinhold. That type of stardom never lasts (see David Cassidy, Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, etc.). As for Judge Reinhold, I had heard back in the day that his ego got out of control and no one wanted to work with him anymore. He was never a star anyway, but rather always played second banana or the wisecracking sidekick. He was supposed to be the star of Fast Times At Ridgemont High but Sean Penn stole the movie from him. I heard that irked him to no end.

by Anonymousreply 21August 7, 2015 4:17 PM

The actors fared better than their female co-stars with the exception of Demi Moore who just lucked out because she was the prettier one. Ally Sheedy, where are you?

by Anonymousreply 22August 7, 2015 4:23 PM

The irony is that it takes more talent to play a "normal" character believably than it does to play a caricaturish over- the-top character like Spicoli. But the Spicolis tend to get all the attention.

by Anonymousreply 23August 7, 2015 4:30 PM
Those guys are all losers. by: Molly Ringwald

Yeah. Let THEM try making a movie where Scott Baio uses magic to look up their dresses, then see how THEY like it for a change!

by Anonymousreply 24August 7, 2015 4:33 PM

I actually rewatched "Fast Times" and was suprised at how little time Spicoli actually had and how dumb the character was but, man, did it take me back to the 80's mall scene. We'd all get our finest on and cruise the malls every Friday night.

Seems totally lame now.

by Anonymousreply 25August 7, 2015 4:34 PM
Seems totally lame now.

Called it.

by Anonymousreply 26August 7, 2015 4:40 PM

I agree with Ebert. After rewatching, I didn't find it really funny at all and Leigh ending up knocked up and getting an abortion was a bummer. I'd forgotten that part.

by Anonymousreply 27August 7, 2015 4:57 PM

Stolz's main gig now is directing TV. Last thing I saw him on was Battlestar Galactica's prequel show, Caprica, that didn't take.

by Anonymousreply 28August 7, 2015 5:38 PM

Most of the names mentioned, sorry to say are 80s has been, except for James Spader and Robert Downey jr.

by Anonymousreply 29August 7, 2015 6:04 PM

Ok also eric stoltz and Charlie sheen, have had success beyond the 80s. Most of the brat pack were not good actors, the 80s brat pack was all about looks and less about talent.

by Anonymousreply 30August 7, 2015 6:11 PM

What about Jon Cryer?

by Anonymousreply 31August 7, 2015 6:14 PM

Agree about Fast Times being a stinker. The only good part is Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool, but it's not the same as if the 1983 version of Matt Latanzi or Tom Cruise would have done the same scene(only removing their speedo instead of just showing their man nipples). And there isn't one really cute guy in the whole movie, unless I'm forgetting someone. The dorky guy that Jennifer Jason Leigh ended up with seemed nice though.

by Anonymousreply 32August 7, 2015 6:26 PM

R22, Ally was very good in High Art but seemed to be playing herself.

She & I go to the same dentist & she is batshit cray.

by Anonymousreply 33August 7, 2015 6:37 PM

Judge Reinhold looks like shit. He fucked up his face with bad plastic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 34August 7, 2015 6:41 PM

How do some of these people survive? Emilio Estevez doesn't do that much directing or producing. Andrew McCarthy does do a lot of directing. But I can't imagine how Judge Reinhold can have a roof over his head. Some of these actors go years in between projects

by Anonymousreply 39August 15, 2016 10:31 PM

Of the list in your subject line .... Charlie Sheen was the only one that would qualify as a 'big' (not huge) movie star.

The others were in a hit or two and then had average careers.

by Anonymousreply 40August 15, 2016 10:49 PM

Anthony Michael Hall is really aging. He was on Murder in the First last night.

by Anonymousreply 41August 15, 2016 10:53 PM
Judge Reinhold is married to an über bitch who is also his manager. They are sort of the poor man's Randy and Evi Quaid.

R10. Of that bunch, all bets are off as to who is the poor man.

by Anonymousreply 42August 15, 2016 11:49 PM

Really, what did happen with Reinhold? He seemed like the sort of charming, funny actor who's spend the rest of his life doing charming, funny, supporting roles.

Drugs? Ego? Mental illness? Foolishly determined to be a star instead of a character actor? All of the above? Spill!

by Anonymousreply 43August 16, 2016 1:50 AM

The last time I saw him in anything was that guest spot on "Seinfeld" ("The Close Talker") some 20+ years ago.

I'll say!

by Anonymousreply 46August 16, 2016 2:02 AM

Eric Stoltz is a really talented actor and has done a lot of good work since that Brat Pack decade. Killing Zoe, Kicking and Screaming, and The House of Mirth come to mind. He's spent a lot of time doing theater, as well.

Always interesting to watch, he's in a whole different league, talent-wise, from the other names in OP's list.

by Anonymousreply 47August 16, 2016 5:01 AM

Judge Reinhold?

Either a troll post or the worst taste ever...

by Anonymousreply 48August 16, 2016 8:58 PM

C. Thomas Howell has aged horribly, but seems to get tv work.

by Anonymousreply 49August 16, 2016 9:37 PM

Emilio was the hottest but he is a fat blob now.

They really weren't huge stars, most of them.

by Anonymousreply 52December 18, 2017 6:16 AM

I’m still reeling over the revelation that Judge Reinhold is doing porn. Sheesh.

by Anonymousreply 53December 18, 2017 6:20 AM

Is Emilio Esteves as skeevy as his brother?

by Anonymousreply 54December 18, 2017 6:21 AM

I know people that know him. They take great offence to him being compared to his brother, so I think them being consistantly firm that Emilio’s a good person means they are not alike.

by Anonymousreply 55December 18, 2017 7:02 AM

Keanu Reeves can not get his films in theaters. Instead we have to see all of those look alike blond boys. Muscles too big and necks the same size as their heads. Big zeros for the most part.

by Anonymousreply 56December 18, 2017 7:14 AM

Keanu Reeves has the John Wick films, which were pretty big hits?

by Anonymousreply 57December 18, 2017 8:49 AM

Which one of them got the biggest volume of actress pussy? It was Stoltz, by a long shot. For awhile he was constantly in the blind gossip columns, hooking up with this one and then with that one.

by Anonymousreply 58December 18, 2017 11:02 AM

Mare Winningham is still a handsome fellow

by Anonymousreply 59December 18, 2017 11:11 AM

Andrew McCarthy was always a bit creepy. He was well cast in last year’s “The Family” playing a pedo.

by Anonymousreply 60December 18, 2017 11:18 AM

Well Stolz was the best looking of the lot.

by Anonymousreply 61December 18, 2017 9:48 PM

R61 Disagree. Gingers never age well.

by Anonymousreply 62December 19, 2017 12:05 AM

I recall Reinhold had a guest spot on "Arrested Development" about 13 years ago. Last time I've seen him.

by Anonymousreply 63December 19, 2017 12:58 AM

I had a schoolboy crush on Mare Winningham. Loved the film, GEORGIA, in which she received an Academy Award nomination.I would love to see her Maria to Kevin Spacey's Capt. von Trapp from their high school production of The Sound of Muisc

by Anonymousreply 64December 19, 2017 1:12 AM

R62 what does hair color have to do with how well you age? That makes no sense. Redheads ( or “gingers”) are not an enthnicity.

by Anonymousreply 65December 19, 2017 1:26 AM

Was Judd Nelson ever attractive?

by Anonymousreply 66December 19, 2017 4:25 AM

Judd Nelson was supposed to be scary I think.

by Anonymousreply 67December 22, 2017 12:36 PM

Judge Reinhold got horrible plastic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 68December 22, 2017 12:47 PM

They have been running 'While You Were Sleeping' on Showtime lately, what happened to Bill Pullman?

by Anonymousreply 69December 22, 2017 12:54 PM

I saw Andrew McCarthy on the west bound M79 bus in Manhattan a couple years ago, he looked really good. He was going to a doctor's appointment (heard him telling them he's running late on the phone).

by Anonymousreply 70December 22, 2017 1:08 PM

Andrew McCarthy is a pussy!

by Anonymousreply 71December 22, 2017 5:47 PM
[R62] what does hair color have to do with how well you age? That makes no sense. Redheads ( or “gingers”) are not an enthnicity.

I'm not R62 but maybe he said that because red hair [italic]usually[/italic] equals fair skin color, [italic]I've[/italic] never seen an olive skinned natural redhead.
What happened to Judge Reinhold? I heard he turned into an asshole. Is it true?

Yes.
According to a source at Dallas Love Field, Reinhold became belligerent when chosen for a second TSA screening. The source said he took his shirt off and used explicit language. Reinhold was charged with disorderly conduct and booked into the Lew Sterrett Justice Center. As he was escorted by police into the jail, he talked to media. "Thanks for the exposure guys," he said. "Glad you're here."

There's a Judge Reinhold audio interview from 2007 or 2008 where he calls Eddie Murphy "sexy" without a whiff of irony.
who did not suffer the same fate was Robert Downey Jr. and I think that's only because of his family connections in Hollywood. His career is better now than it ever was

He has money, but whatever talent he (and he had lots) had is totally gone. He's doing a Disney remake of Dr Doolittle next.

by Anonymousreply 74April 2, 2018 4:40 AM

R74 he's made so much from being Iron Man. Enough that his unborn grandkids won't have to work a day. Probably realizes movie goers won't watch any meaty human drama flicks like The Judge, and doesn't want to be called a has-been after he leaves Avengers. At least he might sing in Dr Doolittle. Idk I won't watch.

by Anonymousreply 75April 2, 2018 4:49 AM
Probably realizes movie goers won't watch any meaty human drama flicks like The Judge

That movie wasn't meaty but rather totally stupid, corny, cliche and full of bad writing, not surprising, his wife produced it, she needed a job. She has a long record of terribly conceived projects on her resume. They only got that budget from WB because RDJ starred in it.

by Anonymousreply 76April 2, 2018 5:39 AM

I thought that Judd Nelson was really sexy in quite a few films - The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, etc. IMO, he was always far hotter than that shorty Emilio Estevez. Estevez did have a great bubble butt however. Judge Reinhold did not ONLY have Fast Times on his resume - the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was a big deal back in the day; he also starred in the cult favorite Ruthless People as well as the very popular (but awful) Gremlins. His role seemed to always be about the same, so I assume that he was seen to be a one-trick-pony after a few successful years and likely everyone just lost interest. Andrew McCarthy was in my mind the most successful on that list. He really was America's sweetheart for years. He was really beautiful but to me seemed "frail" somehow. Whatever the case, he made plenty of money and built one Hell of a resume back in the 80's.

by Anonymousreply 77April 2, 2018 6:34 AM

I really liked THE WAR AT HOME, BOBBY and THE WAY from Emilio. He ought to pitch for some big studio films.

by Anonymousreply 78April 2, 2018 8:36 AM
r56 Keanu Reeves can not get his films in theaters

Yep. Keanu spells failure to me...

R76 omg you're the poster who trash-talks Susan. Not many on here discuss her. I like to micro-analyze her role in their relationship too. Looks like she stopped working and stopped needing to be her own career woman since she had her own boy and girl.

by Anonymousreply 80April 2, 2018 1:14 PM

Ps I never watched The Judge. But he looked hot there. After that, his ageing became clearer and clearer.

by Anonymousreply 81April 2, 2018 1:16 PM
omg you're the poster who trash-talks Susan

welcome to DL, where people trash talk talentless movie producers

by Anonymousreply 82April 2, 2018 9:49 PM

R82 yeah gurl I wanna gossip about RDJ and fam too but they're so boring now that they are well-guarded. Minimal pap pics of him even filling the car with gas. Bet the kids are home schooled or driven by a nanny.

Anyway, my day off is almost ovah.

by Anonymousreply 83April 2, 2018 9:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 85April 2, 2018 11:16 PM

Thanks R84 is that new from 2018? Tumblr links never work for my old phone. At RDJ's age and supposed poz status he shouldn't be doing summer backyard shenanigans.

by Anonymousreply 86April 2, 2018 11:57 PM

I don't know R86, he probably thinks he's cute doing these weird stunts.

by Anonymousreply 87April 3, 2018 12:12 AM

Downey Jr. was gorgeous when he was fresh, young, manic, spastic and bubble-butted. I don't care for his severe, muscular, prune faced older phase. He was an interesting actor - I will not gush about him in the same way that so many others do. He was good but no prodigy IMO. Good for him - he hit rock bottom and had all of Hollywood bending over backwards to prop him back up. I assume he gave up great butthole during his hot years.
