What toppings do you prefer on a hot dog?

I knew a guy who topped hot dogs with mayo. He said it was a southern thing.

by Anonymousreply 106June 23, 2020 2:19 AM

Ketchup, just to cause meltdowns in people from NYC and Chicago

by Anonymousreply 1July 28, 2015 1:21 AM

Not from either of those cities but ketchup on a hot dog is gross to me.

But I think ketchup outside of fried potatoes is gross.

by Anonymousreply 2July 28, 2015 1:28 AM

Mustard and onions. Sometimes chili. Also bacon.

by Anonymousreply 3July 28, 2015 1:31 AM

I'm such a bottom that I couldn't even top a hot dog.

by Anonymousreply 4July 28, 2015 1:32 AM

Mustard, onions, sauce and sometimes slaw.

If the wiener is tasty then I skip the sauce and only put onions, mustard and slaw on it.

by Anonymousreply 5July 28, 2015 1:35 AM

Mustard and kraut. Yummie

by Anonymousreply 6July 28, 2015 1:35 AM

Sticky white creamy cum.

by Anonymousreply 7July 28, 2015 1:37 AM

Mustard, white onions, pickels (not relish, preferably)...and only from here:

A smear of mayo, lots of mustard, onions, cheese and chili, if available.

by Anonymousreply 9July 28, 2015 1:49 AM

yo pussy stank

by Anonymousreply 10July 28, 2015 1:49 AM

mustard and as many grilled onions as you have or can get your hands on.

by Anonymousreply 11July 28, 2015 1:51 AM

I don't eat mystery meat.

by Anonymousreply 12July 28, 2015 1:53 AM

Banana ketchup

by Anonymousreply 13July 28, 2015 1:54 AM

I treat it as a low-budget polish with tomatoes, sport peppers, dill pickle, raw onion, and celery salt.

Mustard is reserved for those times I can't get what I want.

by Anonymousreply 14July 28, 2015 1:57 AM

West Virginia style. Chili and cole slaw with mustard and chopped onions.

by Anonymousreply 15July 28, 2015 2:00 AM

I'm from the South and I never heard of anyone putting mayo on their hot dog. That 's just gross.

by Anonymousreply 16July 28, 2015 2:05 AM

Newsflash -- Cole slaw has mayo in it!

by Anonymousreply 17July 28, 2015 2:13 AM

Not always r17

by Anonymousreply 18July 28, 2015 2:18 AM

I prefer them plain, which always freaks other people out.

by Anonymousreply 19July 28, 2015 2:39 AM

1. Mustard & sweet relish.

2. Chili con carne, shredded cheese, and a few diced onions.

by Anonymousreply 20July 28, 2015 2:39 AM

Slaw is more a southern topping, never heard of mayo as a topping.

by Anonymousreply 21July 28, 2015 2:41 AM

Dijon mustard and sautéed onions

by Anonymousreply 22July 28, 2015 2:43 AM

mustard, onion, chili ............ relish if no chili available.

by Anonymousreply 23July 28, 2015 7:35 AM

Same as R14, but with mustard (and sometimes no tomatoes).

If it's a good hot dog, I don't need ketchup. When at home, though, I need both ketchup and mustard.

by Anonymousreply 24July 28, 2015 8:28 AM

Veggie dog, please (I like Lightlife's big ones). Topped with tomato wedges, diced sweet onion, and homemade refrigerator bread and butter pickle slices. Mustard, tiny bit of catsup, and a very small amount of mayo applied to the bun to keep all the condiments from sliding around. Side of tots, fries, onion rings or potato salad. I have this a couple times a week, totally a favorite.

by Anonymousreply 25July 28, 2015 8:31 AM

Another veggie dog person. Not from the south but I love mayo and onions or cheese and onions. Never mustard or ketchup!

by Anonymousreply 26July 28, 2015 8:34 AM

mustard and ketchup

by Anonymousreply 27July 28, 2015 8:35 AM

A hot dog makes me lose control!

by Anonymousreply 28July 28, 2015 3:36 PM

mustard or mustard and relish.

Never ketchup.

by Anonymousreply 29July 28, 2015 3:54 PM

OP, R16 : Mayo on hot dogs is a "southern" thing, if by southern you mean south of the border, aka Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 30July 28, 2015 4:01 PM

Mustard and Onion.

Sometimes Chile.

Sometimes mustard, onion and relish.

But never all together.

by Anonymousreply 31July 28, 2015 4:09 PM

Mustard & ketchup

by Anonymousreply 32July 28, 2015 4:55 PM

At home it usually just a bit of brown mustard and onions if its hotdogs from the butcher shop my brother owns If I'm out then I load them up with mustard, relish, onions or whatever there is because, to me, there isn't much taste to "regular" hotdogs

by Anonymousreply 33July 28, 2015 7:09 PM

I'm very pleased with how few people here slap ketchup on hotdogs.

by Anonymousreply 34July 28, 2015 7:11 PM

I like Chicago-style hotdogs. Mustard, pickles, peppers, onions, bright green relish. The closest I can get here in NYC is Shake Shack's Shack-cago Dog.

by Anonymousreply 35July 28, 2015 7:17 PM

Mustard, cheese, relish, and sometimes chili if the meat is decent. Onions sometimes as well.

by Anonymousreply 36July 28, 2015 7:23 PM

That is cute, R36, that you are talking about decent-meat-chili while you are going to eat a HOT DOG.

Now, top with mustard and sauerkraut and call it a mother fucking day.

by Anonymousreply 37July 28, 2015 8:17 PM

I always did Mayo and shredded cheese. I'm from Oklahoma and until this thread i've never known anyone else who has done mayo, my family always considered it odd.

by Anonymousreply 38July 28, 2015 8:30 PM

Usually just mustard, either yellow or brown. Never ketchup. Sometimes relish, onions or sauerkraut. That's about it. Chili is rare; I see the appeal but I only eat homemade chili, not canned.

Mayo on a hot dog sounds vile, and I love mayo. Shredded cheese? Never saw that. I do love ordering a Texas Tommy in a dinner, though.

by Anonymousreply 39July 28, 2015 8:49 PM

Spiral-cut Nathan's or Hebrew National hotdog slowly fried in butter(it opens up a bit to expose some of the insides), and popped into a fresh Martin's potato roll. Nothing else is needed. Tasty, spicy, nice "snappy" texture, you can really appreciate it this way.

by Anonymousreply 40July 29, 2015 12:48 AM

I've never heard of a spiral cut hot dog. The extra crispiness inside must be nice.

by Anonymousreply 41July 29, 2015 6:34 AM

My mouth. Oh, you meant the kind you eat?

by Anonymousreply 42July 29, 2015 7:06 AM

R15 on The Kitchen, Katie Lee who's from West Virginia made a WV hot dog sauce. It looked good: a bean-less chili, like a Coney sauce.

In NZ, an 'American Hotdog' is always sold as either a 6 inch or footlong, and is usually topped with sautéed onions, melted cheese, ketchup and mustard.

by Anonymousreply 44July 29, 2015 11:16 AM

That's why they hate us, R44.

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2015 11:41 AM

Who hates who r45?

by Anonymousreply 46July 29, 2015 12:47 PM

This thread makes one snacky.

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2015 12:49 PM

'usually topped with sautéed onions, melted cheese, ketchup and mustard.'

You meant 'melted cheez', dear.

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2015 12:50 PM

Well, as far as I know 'cheez' is an American-only thing. In NZ, it's not that authentic. Most places would use grated cheddar, melted in a grill after toasting the long roll.

Cheese, like most dairy and meat products, are high quality there. Not the same highly-processed stuff like in the US, dear.

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2015 1:32 PM

grated cheddar? That's posh.

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2015 2:14 PM

Chopped onions and mustard. Dijon, not the yellow crap.

by Anonymousreply 51May 27, 2020 2:44 PM

Let me guess, R51, you only just now got to this five-year-old thread because you have 40,000 tabs open in your browser and it takes years -- YEARS! -- to get through them all. Right?

by Anonymousreply 52May 27, 2020 2:47 PM

Correct.

by Anonymousreply 53May 27, 2020 2:48 PM

Vegan hotdog with mustard, ketchup and relish!

by Anonymousreply 54May 27, 2020 2:52 PM

Sweet relish, yellow mustard, and ketchup.

Love it!

When I broil them at home , I cut them lengthwise, and fill with swiss cheese.

by Anonymousreply 55May 27, 2020 3:38 PM

R55 that sounds so good!

by Anonymousreply 56May 27, 2020 3:42 PM

mustard and relish

by Anonymousreply 57May 27, 2020 3:48 PM

Another vote for mustard and sauerkraut—as God intended.

by Anonymousreply 58May 27, 2020 4:21 PM

I like Eckrich Jalapeño & Cheddar Smoked Sausage on a wheat bun.

To that, I add spicy brown mustard, diced white onions, dill relish, and Dixieland Hot Chow Chow. Top that with Wolf Brand Chili No Beans and shredded Mexican Cheese, and that's my favorite way to have a hot dog.

by Anonymousreply 59May 27, 2020 6:02 PM

onions, sweet relish and ketchup.

by Anonymousreply 60May 27, 2020 6:05 PM

Mustard, sweet relish, onions -- in that order.

Ketchup belongs on hamburgers, french fries, and combined with horse radish for fried fish or shrimp cocktail.

I did a taste test once on a former boyfriend's cock -- would a blow job taste better with mustard or ketchup? Not much difference. So then I tried Heinz 57 -- MM mm Good!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist telling that tale. I'll save the buns' story for later.

by Anonymousreply 61May 27, 2020 6:37 PM

Onions (Sabrette please)

Or, Mustard and ketchup.

Or, Mustard and onions

Or, Mustard ketchup and onions.

Or, Lube (For those lonely nights)

by Anonymousreply 62May 27, 2020 6:55 PM

Mustard, relish, onions, and La Victoria hot green jalapeño taco sauce.

by Anonymousreply 63May 27, 2020 7:03 PM

Please don’t use the word “topping.” It makes me horny.

by Anonymousreply 64May 27, 2020 7:14 PM

Mustard, relish, sauerkraut

by Anonymousreply 65May 27, 2020 7:20 PM

Mayo,mustard, onions, chili and cheese.

by Anonymousreply 66May 27, 2020 7:26 PM

All about the tops!

Mustard. Onions. Sauerkraut.

Or chili and onions once a year.

Anything else is trailer-trash level.

by Anonymousreply 70May 27, 2020 8:27 PM

Grey Poupon Mustard and onions.

by Anonymousreply 71May 27, 2020 9:01 PM

Chilli and cheddar cheese, butane torched

Cream cheese and avocado

Bonito fish flakes and okonomiyaki sauce

Seaweed and teriyaki sauce

by Anonymousreply 72June 21, 2020 5:18 AM

I only eat veggie hotdogs. Mustard and onions

by Anonymousreply 73June 21, 2020 5:23 AM

I skipped to the end without reading all the drivel, to tell Y'all that mayonnaise on a hot dog is totally Mexican.

by Anonymousreply 74June 21, 2020 5:23 AM

two favorites

Chicago Dog- yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt.

Chili dog-Good chili, white onion & Cheddar cheese.

by Anonymousreply 75June 21, 2020 5:27 AM

Mustard and relish. If available, onions and chili.

by Anonymousreply 76June 21, 2020 5:29 AM

R74 I didn't know about mayo on hot dogs being Mexican but I love Mexican grilled corn on the cob which is slathered in mayo!

by Anonymousreply 77June 21, 2020 6:17 AM

Cream cheese on hot dogs. 'Lincoln logs' were popular years ago - even featured on The Sopranos! Carmela made them for the kids but Tony loved them, too. White bread or a bun, hot dog sliced in half lengthwise, smothered in cream cheese, topped by another sliced hot dog.

by Anonymousreply 78June 21, 2020 6:20 AM

I'll take my soy-based dog with chopped onions, a long wedge of bread 'n butter pickle, tomatoes, mustard and catsup. This is a mashup of favorite dogs I used to get at Weinersnitchel.

by Anonymousreply 79June 21, 2020 6:23 AM

Most favorite: Mustard and Onion

2nd Favorite: Chili

by Anonymousreply 80June 21, 2020 6:31 AM

Sauerkraut and Onions.

by Anonymousreply 81June 21, 2020 7:16 AM

I prefer not to eat hot dogs.

by Anonymousreply 82June 21, 2020 8:27 AM

I thought mac 'n cheese as a hot dog topping was huge in America? I just tasted one in Australia and it was pretty good

by Anonymousreply 83June 21, 2020 8:41 AM

now i want a hot dog

I like them wrapped in bacon before being grilled. Topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions, and some avocado.

If those are not available, then a strong horseradish mustard will also do.

by Anonymousreply 86June 22, 2020 6:37 AM

Mustard and onions.

by Anonymousreply 87June 22, 2020 7:12 AM

A pizza

by Anonymousreply 88June 22, 2020 7:34 AM

curry sauce

or Indian pickle (mixed pickle)

chili is good too

by Anonymousreply 89June 22, 2020 7:40 AM

I never eat just one hot dog, so one gets mustard and relish or onions and the other gets ketchup.

Plain mayo on a hot dog sounds icky, and I love mayo. However, mayo plus what in Philadelphia is called hoagie spread but elsewhere I think is called hot pepper relish might be pretty good.

Chili on a hot dog makes it a chili dog, which should be topped with shredded cheese and run under the broiler to melt the cheese. This is too messy (and hot) to eat with your fingers, so I don't count it as a true hot dog. It's a meal all by itself, although potato salad goes nicely with it ... but then potato salad goes with pretty much any American picnic-type food.

by Anonymousreply 90June 22, 2020 7:56 AM

Gulden's brown mustard and raw onions

by Anonymousreply 91June 22, 2020 8:54 AM

[quote]This is a mashup of favorite dogs I used to get at Weinersnitchel.

R79 Thanks for the memory! Isn't Der Weinerschnitchel where Albert Brooks and his wife wound up working in Lost in America? I have to watch that movie again...

by Anonymousreply 92June 22, 2020 8:56 AM

The A & W drive in had the best hot dogs but it was the steamed bun that made it exceptional. A plain steamed dog and bun with a frosty mug of A&W root beer....heaven.

by Anonymousreply 93June 22, 2020 8:58 AM

Dijon, and maybe sliced dill pickle. Sometimes, a throw with yellow mustard, like french's.

by Anonymousreply 94June 22, 2020 9:00 AM

Grilled onions and sweet hot mustard.

by Anonymousreply 95June 22, 2020 9:07 AM

I agree with R19, just plain.

by Anonymousreply 96June 22, 2020 9:42 AM

I love the traditional Danish ristet hotdog: remoulade sauce, ketchup, roasted onions, pickled cucumber

by Anonymousreply 97June 22, 2020 9:49 AM

It depends. Sometimes plain. Sometimes mustard and American cheese, like Orange Julius. Sometimes kraut, mustard and chopped onion. Sometimes mustard and the red onion sauce.

by Anonymousreply 98June 22, 2020 10:54 AM

Italian Hot Dog - Fried potatoes, peppers and onions. This may be a regional thing (I'm in NJ).

by Anonymousreply 99June 22, 2020 11:43 AM

Definitely regional, R99.

by Anonymousreply 100June 23, 2020 12:16 AM

Chocolate syrup and whipped cream.

by Anonymousreply 101June 23, 2020 12:46 AM

Why do other people get so uptight about how other people eat their junk food? No one is forcing YOU to have a hot dog any way than how you want it, so why would you care if someone likes something different on theirs?

by Anonymousreply 102June 23, 2020 12:47 AM

R102, this is what Datalounge is all about.

by Anonymousreply 103June 23, 2020 12:48 AM

Back in the day, when Howard Johnson's monopolized the turnpike, there was nothing better than their hot dog, with a buttered bun and with spicy mustard.

by Anonymousreply 104June 23, 2020 1:20 AM

Bacon and melted Swiss cheese.

by Anonymousreply 105June 23, 2020 2:07 AM

Mustard and kraut
