UK to build high security fencing at Channel Tunnel port in northern France to stop illegal migrants from entering country

Apparently there is a huge problem of illegal migrants entering the UK by breaking into lorries that cross over from the Channel Tunnel port in northern France. The UK is also worried that some of the migrants could be jihadists.

well well well look at who's building a fence...racist?

by Anonymousreply 1June 28, 2015 5:39 PM

Imagine someone so pathetic they prefer England to France.

by Anonymousreply 2June 28, 2015 7:27 PM

No r1, you can't just walk into a foreign country and expect to plop down and live there without going through due process. And social services in the UK are already under a tremendous burden. There is not an unlimited supply of money, you know.

by Anonymousreply 3June 28, 2015 7:29 PM

R3 that is the case for any country...yet some countries get more flack for the idea of a wall than others. A lot of Brits (like Canadians) enjoy preaching and pointing the finger at others when their own countries have the same exact problems and proposed solutions.

by Anonymousreply 4June 28, 2015 8:33 PM

Why are they destined for the U.K.? Is it that much better than any other country in Western Europe?

Also, shouldn't there already be a high-security fence in place? Seems like a major oversight.

by Anonymousreply 5June 29, 2015 3:29 AM

R5 doesn't the UK have 1 of the best economies in Europe along with Germany?

[quote][R5] doesn't the UK have 1 of the best economies in Europe along with Germany?

Nope.

by Anonymousreply 7June 29, 2015 2:38 PM

Wouldn't it be more effective if they posted photos of typical British food dishes at the tunnel entrance?

by Anonymousreply 8June 29, 2015 2:59 PM

R5:

The UK has a much more liberal labour market which means it's easier to get a job. It's also a far less racist place than anywhere else in Western Europe, so if you're a foreign economic migrant it's easy to fit in and get ahead.

by Anonymousreply 9June 29, 2015 3:09 PM

R8 lmfao! so true

*cue the overly sensitive Brit defenders though...

R9 there is PLENTY of racism in the UK...all you have to do is google and you can find articles and videos with numerous examples

Today:

Eurotunnel crisis: Man reported killed in Calais as migrants try to push into Britain

The crush of migrants trying to enter Britain through the tunnel connecting it to France turned deadly again Wednesday with reports of another man killed making the attempt -- one of an estimated 37,000 thwarted crossings this year.

French and British authorities are struggling to deal with a situation that has escalated in recent months in tandem with the crisis facing Europe over migrants desperately trying to reach the continent from war-torn or poverty-stricken countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Hundreds of people encamped in the northern French port town of Calais rushed the Eurotunnel to Britain on Monday and Tuesday nights, hoping to hitch a ride on commercial vehicles making the crossing. French media said a Sudanese man in his 20s died in the wave of attempts late Tuesday after being crushed by a truck.

As many as nine people have been killed this year trying to sneak through the Eurotunnel, which runs beneath the English Channel.

Sounds good to me. I'm tired of illegals myself. I won't forget the mess I saw in Sweden with immigrants demanding things like it just comes for free without hard work. Nations need to help their own much more than others.

by Anonymousreply 18July 29, 2015 7:56 PM

Illegal immigration is such a hot topic here, but I can't help but wonder if it's more problematic in Europe with migrants pouring in from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. I think the cultural, social, and religious differences are far more stark than they are in the U.S where typical immigrant groups are Latinos and Asians. Of course, there's also proximity to ISIS.

by Anonymousreply 19July 29, 2015 8:22 PM

Britain = Racist Apartheid State

by Anonymousreply 29August 3, 2015 3:07 PM

I predict the UK will elect a VERY conservative government next time they have elections as the public will be fearful of a country "overrun" by "Africans and Middle Eastern Muslims".

by Anonymousreply 30August 3, 2015 3:12 PM

[quote]as the public will be fearful of a country "overrun" by "Africans and Middle Eastern Muslims

Britain and Europe have been overrun for the past 20 years. Now they have a social nightmare resulting from the empty-headed migrant policies of successive governments and the EU.

by Anonymousreply 31August 3, 2015 3:18 PM

Has anyone in politics suggested any positive moves to decrease the desire to migrate?

by Anonymousreply 32August 3, 2015 3:22 PM

R32 There is no way to stop it. African and Middle Eastern countries are non-functioning, horribly overcrowded, tribal, producing little but more humanity. The situation has been exacerbated by EU migrant policies that have produced on-going social and cultural disintegration.

by Anonymousreply 33August 3, 2015 3:34 PM

The disconnect between the nanny state and popular sentiment in the UK is fascinating.

On the one hand you have the leftleaning intellectual elite, smugly putting in place these extremely permissive migrant policies, often at substantial cost to UK taxpayers.

On the other hand you have a chauvinistic, xenophobic society -- small wonder that so many disaffected British Muslims join ISIS every year.

What a fantastic combination!

by Anonymousreply 34August 3, 2015 3:42 PM

The Egyptians had a very effective method for halting African migrants from Sudan and Eritrea. They shot them dead as soon as got near or crossed Egypt's border. That may be the only way that Europe can halt the onslaught.

by Anonymousreply 35August 3, 2015 3:42 PM

R33 it can be argued that the problems in those countries stem from A) religion and B) the consequence of Euro colonialism. Europe has profited greatly from the Middle East and Africa by taking advantage of their natural resources but most of the people living in those areas have not seen any improvement in quality of life. The governments in those countries are mostly ones that were propped up by the Euros or ones that resulted from an overthrow to Euro-led governments.

by Anonymousreply 36August 3, 2015 3:43 PM

You do realize that racism works both ways don't you?

That if whites were flooding into their countries illegally to live off their governments' social welfare programs their own racism would be through the roof.

Gee people are such dopes.

by Anonymousreply 37August 3, 2015 3:48 PM

R37 except that's not going to be happening in our life time at least. The fallout from Euro colonialism in the 1800s and 1900s has led to horrible conditions all over the world. People aren't leaving African and Middle Eastern countries because life so wonderful there for the average person. Part of the reason why so many western Euro countries are richer and better off than other countries is because of the exploitative nature of colonialism.

by Anonymousreply 38August 3, 2015 3:53 PM

That is because their own countries have governments so corrupt and so exploitive of their own people these impoverished individuals are escaping to more indulgent nations and then scream racism if met with any resistance. Because they know they can.

Europe can't take all the immigrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East, there's not enough space nor jobs for them.

by Anonymousreply 41August 3, 2015 4:04 PM

R36 Rubbish! Africa's and the Middle East's problems have nothing to do with the West and everything to do with social structures based on tribalism and Islam. Most countries have been independent for 50 or more years, yet instead of nation building, warring tribes and their despotic leaders have been engaged in establishing one kleptocracy after another. Rather than remaining at home, banding together and attempting to heal their dysfunctional societies, they flee for the flourishing, functioning countries of Europe.

What the West has contributed to is overpopulation and the on-going dysfunction and chaos. Seventy-five years ago, a large percentage of these people would have died from high infant mortality and disease. Due to various Western NGO and government health programs, high mortality rates no longer exist. But they're still pumping out humans at the same rate. The collusion between the various warlords/despots and governments and NGOs vis-a-vis aid and how they perpetuate the kleptocracy, chaos and dysfunction is well-documented

LOL at people who claim Mexican illegals are a problem. Despite Rugmeister Trump's preposterous nonsense they are not a criminal element in the U.S., they take jobs Americans don't want anyway, and they then spend money in the U.S. Yes, what a plague!

by Anonymousreply 53August 4, 2015 3:51 PM

I wonder what kind of effect the illegal immigrants have had on the UK's economy? We already heard what the mayor of Calais had to say

by Anonymousreply 54August 4, 2015 4:16 PM

In a free country all are free to come and go with no passport/border checks whatever.

Of course in a free country there is no socialism, so only those who want to work and be self-supporting would come.

Parasites would gravitate to greener (welfare state) pastures.

That is the way it was in the USA until about the 1920s

That's what built the USA economic juggernaut.

by Anonymousreply 55August 4, 2015 4:21 PM

Somehow, if it's Europe it's Ok to say that they can't handle all the illegal immigrants ie: why don't they build a wall, etc... But if it's the U.S., we're just supposed to welcome people to come in and avail themselves of jobs and social programs, and we should smile benignly and sing kumbuya... Every country has a breaking point where they just can't support any more people--and sad as it seems, that's the way it is! Blame overpopulation--EVERYBODY seems to think it's their RIGHT TO HAVE KIDS. STOP BREEDING. OR CLOSE YOUR BORDERS. OR: DEATH PANELS FOR GRANDMA. Sad but true...

by Anonymousreply 56August 4, 2015 4:40 PM

It's idiotic having illegal immigrants coming in and taking advantage of social programs.

And what about people who come in at middle age or bring senior parents with them who will be living off these programs for the rest of their lives?.

And then they need to cut back on the programs for americans who have been paying into them for their entire lives?

What is this shit? Like this wounded warrior bullshit. You mean these vets aren't being taken care of? Senior citizens have to worry about ss benefits being cut back?

by Anonymousreply 57August 4, 2015 4:54 PM

R56 not grandma!

by Anonymousreply 58August 4, 2015 4:55 PM

Maybe if all these fucking fabulously wealthy people paid a living wage americans could afford to take these jobs.

by Anonymousreply 64August 4, 2015 5:30 PM

Who do you think is behind that?

Agriculture and big businesses like Walmart where they literally locked illegal immigrants in warehouses at night.

They welcome an endless supply of illegals to depress wages and kick labor unions in the groin. Whenever it seems like a union might be gaining ground at a Walmart, everyone gets fired and illegals with phony IDs and SSNs take the jobs.

by Anonymousreply 65August 4, 2015 8:50 PM

France looks pathetic too in blaming the UK.

BOTH countries need to change their policies

by Anonymousreply 66August 5, 2015 4:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 67August 5, 2015 4:42 AM

R67 because the conditions for the average person are so horrible there and there's nothing they can do to change things? Clearly these people are desperate for a better life.

by Anonymousreply 68August 5, 2015 8:13 AM

Didn't we just see this on Wayward Pines?

by Anonymousreply 69August 5, 2015 8:38 AM

R63 the lorry driver faces a fee of 2000 pounds for each migrant. Uk and French governments lie about the number of migrants.Trains from Southern France are loaded with migrants squatting toilets and seats and going to Paris and Calais. Probably Sweden too. Uk is very attractive to them because British don't ask for id, they 'd find a job and obtain social rights easily Google CRS and Calais pictures and you 'll see.

by Anonymousreply 70August 5, 2015 9:13 AM

Aren't the French and British furious that the heavy tax burden they've been carrying for years is going into social programs for criminals who illegally enter then demand social services and make whites grovel if they don't get them.

by Anonymousreply 71August 5, 2015 2:48 PM

please abolish the socialism and then you will no longer have to complain about immigrants 'demanding' social services!

Yes and how much is the ultimate cost of their older family members coming with them who will share in benefits they have no rights to?

And why are they talking about severe cuts to SS benefits in 2016 when the article states the benefits will last without cuts to 2037?

And when you get down to it is slave labor which a company like Nabisco is seeking in Mexico because it costs too much to pay americans a living wage while upper managements makes off with pay and bonuses way out of proportion to their workers unknown since the days of the robber barons..

It's a number of things. Lack of national ID cards there (easier to 'disappear'), family/friends already there, many already speak some English plus reports from migrants that have preceded them about the relative ease of getting housing and a monthly payment of some sort. Some other countries are more generous but the UK's combination of factors makes it the porridge that Goldilocks ate for this most recent wave of migrants.

[quote]Brits freak out about everything-even a few inches of snow. Are they screaming "we're doomed!" with this current crisis?

Not at all. No one seems to give a fuck, but the news media has got something it can dramatise and fill endless hours of news coverage on without having to do much journalism so they're loving it and milking it for all it's worth.

by Anonymousreply 78August 6, 2015 10:00 AM

It's similar to the endless coverage a few years ago of the so-called "riots" that we had here. Whereby a few hundred people (mostly, it turns out, were middle-class working adults) smashed shop windows and stole some stuff. We then had days and weeks of heart-tugging, had-wringing in the news media about the "problem" of the underclasses and the Prime Minister, David Cameron - who a few months before had been shown to have stolen over £20,000 from the tax-payer by fiddling his expenses account, stood outside 10 Downing Street and claimed that there was "a sickness in our society".

It's hypocrisy and it suits a certain agenda, that's all.

R60 the UK isn't part of the Schengen Agreement so you do need a passport. The Schengen Agreement doesn't cover Africa. The immigrants are arriving in southern Europe and are claiming to be refugees in fear for their lives. Some of them are, specially those fleeing Syria, but most of them aren't. If you are in fear for your life then you claim asylum at the first safe country you come to.

The immigrants are crossing several safe countries to get to Britain. When the mayor of Calais is blaming the British she might want to ask herself how they managed to get into France in the first place. It isn't anyone else's job to patrol France's borders but the French. Britain isn't responsible for who France lets in.

by Anonymousreply 82August 6, 2015 12:09 PM

R82 It's been "rough" for 20 years for Europe's Jewish communities, who have suffered Muslim harrassment, attacks and murders. Britain, France and Germany especially have been disinclined to do much, partly out of historical entrenched Jew hatred and partly out of fear of offending Muslims. EU migrant and human rights policies have created a social disaster and Europe's Jews have been paying and continue to pay the price.
