Anyway, I think Gandy is aging very well. Just because he doesn't look 20 doesn't mean that he looks bad. He looks damn gorgeous. They just had a big men's fashion event in London over the weekend (London Collections Men) and he OWNED THAT F#CKING JOINT.

I am not a big modeling connoisseur - but from what I've seen, Gandy is the epitome of a male model. He's incredible.

But for those of you who insist on a more youthful look, perhaps Sean O'Pry is more your speed (O'Pry can boast being a higher-earning male model than Gandy - at least he was a few years ago.).

Despite what some US-centric posters like to believe, the UK has always been a bit of a melting pot when it comes to ethnicities and Essex - and the south-east in particular - have alway had that going for it. Is there eastern-European blood in him? Possibly - but from centuries ago.

I think the fun thing about the fashion industry nowadays in the UK, well, more so the modelling industry, is that they seem to scout or favour boys from a middle or upper class background. After all, the biggest contracts are with houses like Burberry or car manufacturers like Jaguar and they have a solidly upper-class image to maintain. You go back about twenty years ago, however, and a lot of the men on the books at the agencies were working class or "lower class" types. Fashions change - Gandy's a damned good indicator of that. He helped end the stupid "Dior Boy" look dominance of the catwalk (how a fashion designer could think that their potential clients are all skinny, drug-riddled rent boys is beyond me) and no doubt in ten years another male model will come about who'll change the industry or at least give it a solid kick up the arse.

Well, R42 - IF Gandy looks 45, he looks like a strikingly-handsome, extraordinarily fit, debonair 45-year-old. I think he's more well-preserved than a lot of men his age. A lot of men start to look like hell by their early or mid-'30s.

So what if he has a few frown lines? He has a face that accommodates them well.

I wonder how many of the "he looks so old for his age!" comments are coming from the people who are used to seeing the airbrushed finished picture in a magazine. Believe me, the average male model usually looks very average when they're out and about, but once they're on camera...and the finished product itself is usually really heavily retouched. That sort of shit is rife in the gay magazine industry.

Have never understood the hoopla about him. But Gisele strikes me as an ugly slag as well.

I think it's because he was considered unusual compared to the offerings from the modelling agencies at the time of his D&G advert. Most agencies turn out row after row of identical twinks or emaciated meth-heads and *bam*, there's Mr Gandy with a rather nice looking body and a rather interesting face. I've heard it mentioned that D&G could have went with other equally athletic models, but his face fit the definition of what they were looking for. I read an interview with him a couple of years ago where he pointed out that he had been working in the industry for years but was always getting knocked back, not because of his face, but because he was considered "too big" for what the client wanted.

Fun fact about male models: the majority of them are straight. The industry itself has the gay label (not helped by the likes of that old bleached toad Lagerfeld...) and the models are labelled as gay by default. When you think about it, it's fairly obvious why they get labelled like that - what sort of straight man whips his kegs off and struts down a runway? Er, quite a few actually. That said, I've heard tales from people within the industry of there being a gay-for-pay side to it all before the term popped up in porn.

The majority of men in general are straight. I expect that if you actually did a survey, though, you'd find that, even if only a minority of models are gay, the proportion of gay models is probably higher than the proportion of gays in the general population.
