Remember when Maury wasn't about paternity tests and when he featured guests from all races and not just blacks?

R1, Springer was the same way. A serious show about social issues like Donahue used to be. Then in the second year he went full on sideshow and never looked back.

I'm not sure why I'm being attacked. The show is on right now and all the guests are white. One woman is testing her uncle and cousin and three other 'cletus' looking guys as potential baby daddies. And one woman is back for the 10th time trying to find her kid's father.

I had no idea these guys were still on TV. They're not discussed very much so I thought both their shows were long gone.

About five years ago, I was sitting in a tire store one afternoon, having my tires rotated. The TV was on in the waiting room and it was Springer's show. A man came in and sat down to wait while they put a new tire on his car. The Springer show had people yelling and hitting each other and this man had never seen anything like this. He just kept saying, "Omigod!" over and over as things got worse on TV. Then he commented that he could not believe that this was being aired after school hours and kids could be watching. He was absolutely horrified that anything like this was on daytime TV. He was a doctor who had office hours and hospital visits every afternoon and never paid attention to daytime TV.

Twice I happened to catch Jerry Springer while channel surfing and see two different guests who clearly were upset being on the show. You can see in their eyes that they hit rock bottom. I stayed away from that show because of it. There were a few shows in the late 90s and early 00s that were funny. One of them a woman destroys an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner.

Maury was always awful. I wasted my early 20s watching it drunk/high with my best friend.

I remember when Maury Povich had a talk show and interviewed guests. It wasn't bad. One of his guests was Grace Lee Whitney, probably best known for playing Janice Rand on "Star Trek." She was also a talented singer who opened in clubs for Billie Holiday and Buddy Rich and she appeared in several Billy Wilder movies, including "Some Like It Hot." She was a good guest; her comments on Marilyn Monroe were very interesting. Other guests I remember were members of the Branch Davidian cult, the one whose leader was that loony perv David Koresh. I have no idea why he's sunk to lowest level of trash tv. The shows are a formula; scumbag women screaming that their scumbag boyfriends are the fathers of their babies. The result of a paternity test are read; if it's positive, the slutbag woman whoops and jumps up and down in glee. If it's negative, the scumbag boyfriend does the jumping and whooping and the slutbag screams and wails and runs off, with Maury close behind her, trying to catch up with her so he can comfort her. It's VERY bad acting, not funny or amusing, just bad. And it's obvious that the participants have been coached to behave in the same repetitive fashion. I haven't seen this show in ages, but it seems that yes, the participants are almost exclusively black.

Jerry Springer features white trash who pretend to get into fights and talk about the great sex they have with their (fill in the blank). I think it's pretty much bogus. Why would anybody go on a talk show and say they have sex with their mother unless they were being paid for doing it? Yea, I remember a show where a married guy said he had sex with his mother because his mother needed a man for sex; the mother insisted it was a loving thing to do and it better to get sex from her son than to go out and be a "whore." I think it was all utter bullshit.

There was one Springer show that supposedly wasn't allowed to air. It was entitled "I Married A Horse." Yes, it was about a guy in love with his horse. Too bad it didn't air. That might actually have been interesting.

Well I think the shock factor is amusing to people. I know it is for me. I go, "what?" when Springer or Maury or Steve Wilkos come on doing voiceovers of the day's show, boyfriends screwing girlfriend's mother, father molesting 1 year old baby, lesbians fighting over each other, straight men learning they got oral from a man (transsexual), etc. It's weird, it's bizarre, it's so taboo stuff that people in middle America, America's breadbasket farmland don't normally experience. Both of these guys used to have serious talk shows before then went trash. I remember being 15 and watching Maury Povich when had a whole show devoted to the Gay Games in 1994 and it wasn't treated as sensationalistic or designed for laughs. Back then, talk shows were one of the only places to see actual gay people on TV. Now they just showcase the most absurd and ridiculous segments of society.
