Why is this so shocking, OP? Because of the "impossibility" of there being any overlap of skin color between people of African descent and Caucasian people?

It just goes to show you that you cannot necessarily rely on sheer skin color alone as the sole visible determinant of one's racial background. Other characteristics may actually be more informative - such as skin texture, hair texture, facial features, build, voice quality, etc.. I mean, look at the skin color of many South Asians - it is often just as dark (or darker) than that of many black people. So how do you tell them apart? Much to the relief of many South Asians (seemingly) - there are ways of easily distinguishing a South Asian from an African or African American.

Kaepernick is one of those people who has light skin even by "biracial" standards. I remember the first time I laid eyes on the guy. With that name, the light skin, and relatively keen facial features (and with the lighting of the TV image not being optimal) - it took me a few seconds longer than usual to see that he was black (or biracial). I think I immediately assumed that he was white - but after several seconds of taking in his build, hair(style) etc. - I was like, "Wait a minute - he doesn't seem completely 'white'..."

If you did a similar comparison of people like Derek Jeter or Rashida Jones to certain white people, you would be similarly "shocked". And take Rosie Perez and Jennifer Lopez: if you looked at skin color alone, Rosie seems to actually have lighter skin than Jennifer. Yet - Rosie is basically considered a "black Latina" (even if she doesn't consider herself one), while Jennifer is thought of as a "white" Latina. Why? Well, look at other characteristics...
