Howard TV Is No More

Did any Stern fans pick up on that? It went off Oct 19th. There will be no show for television now. I believe they blamed Youtube for uploading it.

by Anonymousreply 6511/13/2013

Hampton Howie doesn't care anymore about show quality. I'm a Stern fan and I wish he had the integrity to retire.

by Anonymousreply 111/02/2013

The show began to decline when Billy West left and hasn't been the same since Jackie quit.

by Anonymousreply 211/02/2013

When did they quit?

Howard still has the best celeb interviews.

by Anonymousreply 311/03/2013

West left in late 95, I think, and Jackie left in 2001.The writing on the show really declined when Jackie left.

by Anonymousreply 511/03/2013

That useless fuck Benjy replaced Jackie.

by Anonymousreply 611/03/2013

Benjy was there before Jackie left

by Anonymousreply 711/03/2013

After Jackie left, Benjy moved up to "first chair" as joke writer. The more vocal and visible replacement for Jackie was, of course, Artie Lange, but he wasn't feeding jokes Howard as Jackie had done; that was Benjy.

by Anonymousreply 811/03/2013

R8 is right, and that really shows what a cushy gig Artie had. All he had to do was show up and tell an interesting story every so often.

by Anonymousreply 911/03/2013

Supposedly there's a new video format coming soon. My guess is it will be an internet subscription service of some sort.

by Anonymousreply 1011/03/2013

I listen on Sirius when I'm traveling for work, because I don't have Sirius myself. I still like listening to the old crew (Howard, Robin, Fred, Gary) but the newer people (Benjy, Richard Christie, Sal, etc) do nothing for me.

I wonder if Howard will fold things soon. Many of them are turning 60 in the next year or two.

by Anonymousreply 1111/03/2013

The moment Howard chose to surround himself with sycophants who were also cheap labor, the show went to shit.

He's a cheap asshole who wasn't willing to pay for real talent, so we got stuck with lame bits and his bimbo wife with her bullshit vanity projects. "Hey, let's have a Hamptons wildlife charity event in the Hamptons... and completely miss the irony! I need my picture taken for Page Six!"

by Anonymousreply 1211/03/2013

I love people like R13, who just love to spend other people's money.

by Anonymousreply 1411/03/2013

I don't listen to the show anymore, but I really miss Jackie.

WTF is Stuttering John doing these days?

by Anonymousreply 1511/03/2013

Stuttering John is a writer on The Tonight Show, R15.

by Anonymousreply 1611/03/2013

Stuttering John left because Leno pays him a decent salary. Stern was outraged by the poaching, but that's what happens when you have family to support.

by Anonymousreply 1711/03/2013

[quote]I love people like [R13], who just love to spend other people's money.

Read R17. Howard whined like a cunt when John left, and lied about the reason he turned into a little bitch. John left because unlike cheap Howard, Jay pays. Howard even shit on Jay for paying his staff during the strike. I loathe Jay's comedy, but he's a better 'bossman" than Howard will ever be.

He doesn't pay for talent, that's why Billy West is now making a great living as a sought-after voice.

by Anonymousreply 1811/03/2013

He should at some point just start replaying old shows from the 80s and early 90s. His shows on regular radio back then were hilarious. I would listen to them all over again.

by Anonymousreply 1911/03/2013

Howard is greedy but I don't blame him for demanding hundreds of millions. He's super-talented and deserves it. But his staff is at least 1/100th as talented and dedicated, so a respectable boss would pay them more.

by Anonymousreply 2011/04/2013

Is Robin a multi-millionaire? I wonder what she gets for doing the show.

I think a streaming video show would be great, but let's face it, we live in the post-internet age. There's no way he can do something and it not ending up on the web for free. Each day's show is uploaded and put out there for free. Not doing an in-studio tv show is going to help anything. No matter what he does, it will be easily pirated. You have to take that into consideration for everything that you do.

I wonder if Satellite will eventually become terrestrial. Perhaps people would only have to buy the equipment to listen, but not a subscriptions. Don't they already put commercials into the show? The big thing about Satellite was that there would be no censoring. If you have to buy equipment to listen, it would still be exclusive, and no one would have to cry out: 'Think of the children!'

by Anonymousreply 2111/04/2013

Yes, both Robin and Fred are very well off. Multi-millionaires. Robin owns a condo on the UWS, and beach house and an apartment in LA. She also owns a bunch of rental properties and invests in strip malls. Among other things.

Fred owns two homes, has a major motorcycle collection, and also owns rental properties and some restaurant franchises.

They aren't Howard wealthy but I would estimate that both are probably worth 30-50 million each.

Gary isn't hurting either, but he isn't in the Robin/Fred range.

by Anonymousreply 2211/04/2013

Let me clear up a few things here.

Howard announced the upcoming end of Howard TV several months ago. He said there was something new coming up to replace it but he couldn't comment about it yet.

My guess is that they hit the ceiling on subscribers since Howard TV is distributed via cable and that audience plateaued years ago.

Earlier this year, Howard hired an executive to manage his brand. Her name is Marci something or other, and there was definite tension among the staff when she came on board. Gary actually reports to her now, and has to share his old office with Traci ("You're a douche, Grillo!") and this is likely due to Marci taking over his old office.

They don't talk about Marci on the air, which was a smart negotiation for her (even though she trumpets her new job on LinkedIn). My guess on this is that Howard is planning his next move after the Sirius contract is up. I don't think they will offer him a new contract, and if they did I don't think he would take it.

Like someone said, he is probably taking everything online. I think Howard would live to retire, but knows his motley crew of employees are probably two paychecks away from the street.

Jay Leno has demoted John, or maybe even let him go by now. John no longer has a presence on the show and recently started using the "Stuttering John" moniker again, indicating he might be making a change soon as well. (He had to drop that name while on Leno, for legal reasons I think.)

Obviously I know way too much about all of this.

by Anonymousreply 2311/04/2013

On the wrap up show a few weeks ago Baba Booey did mention in passing that the office area has been sanitized, said there used to be an open closet with all kinds of porn and sex toys visible and it is gone now.

by Anonymousreply 2411/04/2013

I love Howard's interviews. He is the best interviewer in modern time, in my opinion. He gets guests to reveal everything.

by Anonymousreply 2511/04/2013

Howard used to make fun of Imus, Diedra, Imus's trophy wife and cancer kid ranch and endless promotion of the ranch. Howard's become Imus, instead of cancer kids it is cats. Always pimping some shit.

I think Howard is done with Sirius when this contract is up. He bought a new $20million house in Florida recently. I am sure he plans to use it.

As it is, he's on a 3 day schedule at the most, less in the summer when AGT is on, and they can barely fill those 12 hours with content.

He should retire with some dignity as opposed to the crap he is doing now (excluding the decent interview on occasion).

by Anonymousreply 2611/04/2013

[quote]My guess is that they hit the ceiling on subscribers since Howard TV

Hit the ceiling?

[quote]My guess on this is that Howard is planning his next move after the Sirius contract is up. I don't think they will offer him a new contract, and if they did I don't think he would take it.

What do you think Howard will do next? Full-time reality tv host?

About not offering him a new contract, is his show doing that badly for Sirius? I think I heard something like that. Does Sirius actually have other shows that do way better than his? I mean, he was the face of the company for awhile there.

[quote]Like someone said, he is probably taking everything online. I think Howard would live to retire

I don't think he wants to retire at all. Perhaps just the radio gig. If he wanted to retire, why on Earth would he do America's Got Talent??! Surely that's not an easy gig. They even moved the location of the show for him to be able to do it.

I would take a Robin show, but all it would be is new-age crap, and I don't think she could hold a show. She and Howard are yin and yang.

[quote]Jay Leno has demoted John, or maybe even let him go by now. John no longer has a presence on the show and recently started using the "Stuttering John" moniker again, indicating he might be making a change soon as well. (He had to drop that name while on Leno, for legal reasons I think.)

Jay's going off the air, so I don't think John has much of a choice now.

[quote]Obviously I know way too much about all of this.

Great! I loved reading all of it!!!

Thanks for all of this info! If you have more, spill!

They've aired the old E! show on Howard TV I think, perhaps in "Best of" specials. I know Sirius bought all of Howard's old terrestrial shows.

by Anonymousreply 2711/04/2013

Thanks R27.

By "hit the ceiling" I mean they've harvested all of the subscribers they can....can't go any higher there.

Howard did buy a fancy compound in Palm Beach. Actually Beth went down there for closing and took some flack from the fans for that. I like Beth, and love the way she has devoted herself to animal rescue. Even if Howard spends months in Florida, I think the show can utilize ISDN lines to broadcast remotely, since Robin used one pretty successfully over the last year or so while she was battling cancer.

If Howard has his own website though, he can follow whatever schedule he wants to..with all of the vacation he wants. When there was talk of CNN firing Piers Morgan, I noticed that Howard booked some high-profile guests and did A LOT of homework to prepare for them.

A coincidence? I'm not so sure, even though Piers visited recently and had a great interview. I wouldn't be surprised to see Howard doing some cable (or even network) interviews in some capacity, leveraging his AGT visibility with a new audience.

I forgot to say before that once Marci came on the scene, there was an abrupt halt to the misc. shows on Howard 101 that featured Howard's staff as hosts. (Back Office Radio, which is sorely missed...Geektime, John Hein's TV Show...) Geektime finally came back, but only with Ralph, who is technically not a member of the Sirius staff. (He is on Howard's staff as stylist, lackey, secret-keeper, whatever.) All of the shows that John Hein did are gone, other than the Wrap Up Show. They have added a few new programs, but none of them feature Howard's "on air" staff. Probably part of Marci's plan to control the content and clean some things up. Like the "glom" closet with all of the porn that someone mentioned. I think they gave the Sibian away, too.

I think Marci was trying to make sure the emphasis was on Howard since it seemed like the staff were all busy trying to make names for themselves. I'm sure they will have opportunities to do that when Howard needs content for his new enterprise, whatever that is.

Howard does appear to own his old content, and frequently plays the old shows on Howard 101 in one form or another.

In the last few years Howard sued Sirius for unpaid bonuses, lost, and then lost again on appeal. That situation, plus the fact that Mel Karmazin left Siruis generally point to Howard's ass hitting the door when his contract is up (in Dec 2014, maybe?). The guy running Sirius now is a Bible Thumper and has been bringing on new talent in the mornings on the other channels, so the writing is on the wall.

Whatever Marci is doing for Howard's "brand" it is long overdue. After a career of taking shit from other people, he should be well-equipped to run his own show now, particularly due to the decentralization of media in general.

I forgot about Leno retiring since I don't watch his show. I guess I will believe that when I see it, after what happened last time he went bye-bye.

by Anonymousreply 2811/04/2013

How can Howard pay that lazy loser Ralph out of his own pocket, yet not help out with the other staff salaries?

by Anonymousreply 2911/04/2013

A few things - Howard is pretty bitter over Sirius. He sued them because they were to deliver him multimillions in stock options if he were to hit a target number of subscribers. He hit that but Sirius refused to pay because they said the target was from XM purchase. Howard argued that you actually had to buy the sirius package to get Howard at the start of the merger and those were new subscribers (which I agree with) but the courts did not see it that way so he lost.

Howard has plans to become a florida resident because there is no state tax in florida. A lot of very wealthy people are doing this saving millions in taxes. I believe at the end of his contract he will move to an internet based radio show/web portal. He was entertaining this before his last resign, where Adam Curry (of mtv fame) was telling him he could make 10 times what he makes now. I think that is the plan now, to move to florida and do a version of the howard stern show out of florida. They have already proven Robin can do her part from anywhere (although I think they have better chemistry when they are all in studio).

I think the show is great minus Benjy. He literally is a time suck. Richard cracks me up (being able to identify beer via butt chugging had me crying I was laughing so hard) Sal is a moron and that is the funny part. They plan on having in a mother who bet her 12 year old downs syndrome daughter could beat him in simple trivia. Hanize, Eric the Midget, Jeff the drunk...all of them are entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 3011/04/2013

Superfans of DL - What would you do to revamp the show for a new format? I think Benjy should go. Even Howard's irritation with him isn't that funny. And maybe George Takei too. As much as I like his batty, avuncular kindness, he doesn't get Howard's humor - he's too literal.

by Anonymousreply 3111/04/2013

Beth is the luckiest woman on earth. It bothers me when wealthy liberals move, or hide money to avoid paying taxes. It's hypocritical.

by Anonymousreply 3211/04/2013

[quote]Gary isn't hurting either, but he isn't in the Robin/Fred range.

Gary should invest in Reesee's.

by Anonymousreply 3311/04/2013

[quote]Superfans of DL - What would you do to revamp the show for a new format? I think Benjy should go. Even Howard's irritation with him isn't that funny. And maybe George Takei too. As much as I like his batty, avuncular kindness, he doesn't get Howard's humor - he's too literal.

I'm not sure what is Howard's own material or what is Benji's material. But, I laugh out loud when I listen.

George Takei is always great when he's on. I love Richard Simmons when he's on.

Howard is excellent with celebrity guests. I don't want him to retire. I have listened to him for years and years.

by Anonymousreply 3411/04/2013

the younger crowd don't care and don't know Howard Stern (well, maybe in the tri-state area, but not really beyond)

He was a GREAT radio host and had an innovative and very fun show back in the day. But, IMO, that time has come and gone.

Time to retire Howard!

by Anonymousreply 3511/04/2013

He should do a late night show. Howard is simply the best celebrity interviewer of current times.

by Anonymousreply 3611/04/2013

Well, everything's subjective I guess. I my opinion the show got way better AFTER Jackie left. The Artie years were fun, but I'm really loving it right now, especially with Robin being back. They make me laugh every single day, I don't think they've ever been better.

by Anonymousreply 3711/04/2013

Robin makes 10m a year. Imagine. Don't know about Fred.

I think Howard's better than ever. His voice has matured, he's more thoughtful. So what if the gang is hitting 60? Still the best radio that makes one laugh out loud even on rough days.

In terms of interviewing skills, Howard's the man.

However did drop Howard TV from my cable package.

by Anonymousreply 3811/04/2013

Fred's twitter account is funny. He doesn't tweet often, but when he does he always expresses his dislike for Benji.

It's very subversive, actually.

I thought it had to be a parody account at first, but it's Fred all right.

PS Hey Fred!

by Anonymousreply 3911/04/2013

To clear up a few things:

- Jackie was *never* funny. Listen to some Master Tape Theater for a refresher in the puns, the lame sketches and recorded bits, the cackling at his own "jokes," and THE APPLAUSE. The CONSTANT APPLAUSE. My God! The show is unlistenable until it stopped, around the E! years.

- Artie was a gift to the show and it is a shame that he self-destructed.

- Benjy the on-air personality is terrible, but almost any funny thing Howard says out of the blue is fed to him by Benjy over the computer.

- Howard's lawsuit was ridiculous. He had a contract that paid him a bonus for adding subscribers. He tried to count the XM subscribers that came with the merger as "new subscribers" under the terms of his contract, as if they joined Sirius out of the blue and were not paid for, in cash, by a merger. It was pushing it to the extreme and he deserved to lose.

by Anonymousreply 4011/04/2013

He should have blamed Don Buchwald, who should have included specific language in Howard's contract.

by Anonymousreply 4111/04/2013

I agree with r40. It was ridiculous for him to sue.

by Anonymousreply 4211/04/2013

Fred clarified just the other day he does not do twitter. The clapping on the old shows was stupid and annoying. The best part about Jackie was the making fun of what a never-was/has been comedian he was and his incessant plugging and lame cd's.

The lawsuit was a joke. I would sue my attorneys or agent for allowing a vague contract like that to be executed.

Although I do enjoy the show and respect that things change and evolve over the years, it is disappointing that Howard has become so many of the things he used to shred to pieces, and doesn't even seem embarrassed by it.

by Anonymousreply 4311/04/2013

I agree Howard deserved to lose the court case and he should blame Buckwald, not Sirius.

Howard is an excellent interviewer because he has empathy. Besides the interviews, the show has gone downhill and will stay there.

The other poster is correct about the Florida move: Howard bought that Palm Beach compound so he can broadcast from home and pay no state income tax -just like Rush Limbaugh.

by Anonymousreply 4411/04/2013

How does all this affect High Pitch Eric?

by Anonymousreply 4511/04/2013

[quote]The best part about Jackie was the making fun of what a never-was/has been comedian he was and his incessant plugging and lame cd's.

His recent appearance where he read from Robin's book was epic. He is good at making fun of Robin.

by Anonymousreply 4611/04/2013

[quote] How could any intelligent person listen to a moronic Stern. He obviously never grew out of puberty.

You sure told me. I feel so foolish now for listening to Howard since 1986. And all along I thought I was pretty smart.

by Anonymousreply 4811/04/2013

r40 - Howard was not just counting xm - when Sirius bought XM, you had to pay extra to get Howard. He was counting those people as new subscribers.

Even so if he did, the argument can be made Sirius would never had the ability to buy XM if Howard was not on Sirius. It will be interesting to see what happens to Sirius XM once he is gone.

by Anonymousreply 4911/04/2013

How did silly Sal land a producer's position?

by Anonymousreply 5011/04/2013

A few years ago Gary claimed he didn't have enough money to retire, so I really doubt he's anywhere near Fred's league. And he's certainly nowhere near Robin, who's got cash to burn.

by Anonymousreply 5111/05/2013

Howard should so late night. He should take over for Letterman if and when Letterman retires. Benji can hold the queue cards.

by Anonymousreply 5211/05/2013

Gary's sons are college-age now, so he is nowhere near writing checks for them. He also moved into a pricey new home in Connecticut in the last decade, so there is the mortgage to consider.

Sirius reorganized a few months ago, and now Tim Sabean is no longer working on Howard's channels. He is actually overseeing a number of other Sirius channels, including the Opie & Anthony show and other morning shows management wants to develop to fill Howard's shoes.

There was speculation that Tim was in rehab after he disappeared, so it is possible he took some time off before assuming his new role. After his divorce, it was obvious something was going on with Tim, what with the extreme weight loss(es) and gain(s), the trail biking, the spewing diahrrea (sp?).

by Anonymousreply 5311/05/2013

Benji is fucked. He is incredibly annoying, and that whole line about how he writes everything funny Howard says is horse shit. He will never find work after Howard is done (pretty much confirmed by the celebrity super fan show, they all said Benji they would never hire Benji).

BaBa Booey is a dope too. He doesn't have enough to retire because he lives in a huge house in Greenwich, CT.

The best years were when Billy West was on the show and pre-Private Parts. Hilarious, piss your pants funny.

The Artie years were pretty good also. Artie was making $3.5million a year on the show according to his new book.

by Anonymousreply 5411/05/2013

[quote]How did silly Sal land a producer's position?

Sycophant. Cheap labor.

by Anonymousreply 5511/05/2013

During the "Gary Roast" several years ago, it was mentioned by some of the roasters that Gary was being paid $500,000.00 annually.

by Anonymousreply 5611/05/2013

As I recall, Artie received Gary's paycheck by mistake a number of years ago, and his smirking about the dollar amount caused a lot of ill will between them.

Is Artie's new book out? Is it worth reading?

by Anonymousreply 5711/05/2013

I get a kick out of seeing Jon Leiberman appear on Jane Velez Mitchell and the other HLN nightly shows.

He is always prepared with his facts, and is very articulate.

He's a hard worker, that Jon. He must "sleep fast", as my mother used to say.

by Anonymousreply 5811/05/2013

Gary, Sal and most of the show are Sirius employees and not paid by Howard. Fred, Robin and Howard are paid on air talent and get different paychecks, contracts and negotiations. Besides the "benji vortex" this is why they cut his mic. He is not considered on air talent.

I never really got why they have to do the show so early. They go 6-10, which he could just as easily do 9-1 or hell do it in the afternoon and run the afternoon show the next morning. I know he wanted to keep the vibe of the morning drive time radio - but as he is so fond of saying - he is not on terrestrial radio any more.

by Anonymousreply 5911/05/2013

Actually Howard has stated numerous times he would like the times to start later and it's Sirius that says no

by Anonymousreply 6011/06/2013

R57 I listened to Artie' s book last week. It was interesting as it addresses his drug history during his years on Stern and goes in-depth on his suicide attempt. The downside is he apologizes too much, he thanks people constantly and he dwells a bit too much on his girlfriend (and recent fiancee) Adrienne. I don't "know" her, as she came into his life post-Stern so she's a cipher to me.

by Anonymousreply 6111/06/2013

I download the show and listen in its entirety so I don't care what time of the morning it runs. I am listening to the end of October right now.

by Anonymousreply 6211/13/2013

You can do it on Youtube too. I do when I miss a show. I actually just listed to Howard's take on the Zimmerman Trial.

by Anonymousreply 6311/13/2013

Who cares? Most of the people there are pushing 60 (or already are). After awhile things run their course and simply aren't funny anymore.

Time for some new people.

by Anonymousreply 6411/13/2013

I love funny 60 years olds.
