Police: 'Subway vigilante' Goetz arrested in undercover drug bust

New York (CNN) -- A New York man dubbed the "subway vigilante" after he shot four youths in 1984 was arrested Friday for allegedly selling marijuana to an undercover officer, Sgt. Carlos Nieves told CNN.

Bernhard Goetz, 65, met the female undercover officer at Union Square Park on Friday and agreed to sell her marijuana, according to Nieves.

He then went to his nearby apartment to pick up the drugs, Nieves added.

After an exchange of the marijuana for $30, the undercover officer walked away and field members of the Manhattan south Narcotics Division swooped in to arrest Goetz, police told CNN.

The arrest took place about a block away from Goetz's home in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, according to police. Goetz is charged with criminal possession, criminal sale and unlawful possession of marijuana, Nieves told CNN. He remains in custody and is awaiting arraignment.

Goetz was previously the subject of national attention when he shot four black teenagers on December 22, 1984, aboard a Manhattan subway car.

Goetz, who is a white man, was later charged with four counts of attempted murder.

The four victims said they asked Goetz for $5 as they were panhandling for money to play video games.

During his trial, Goetz testified that he felt threatened and believed he was being robbed when he fired several rounds into the youths.

Goetz was acquitted of murder and assault charges in the shooting, but was convicted of illegal possession of a weapon. He served less than nine months behind bars.

The incident took place at a time when race relations were strained and crime levels were high in New York City.

[quote]allegedly selling marijuana

Oh for fuck sake.

Seriously, Ray? You've got nothing better to do than arrest people for selling pot?

I've never taken a drug in my life, and even I know this is stupid. Fucking idiots.

Normally I'd mock the NYPD for bothering with a $30 pot bust, or any pot bust. In this case - I'm gloating.

Fuck Bernie Goetz, a notorious racist vigilante. I hope with his prior weapons charge that he'll do some time for his petty pot dealing.

Back when he did the shooting the subway was very different than it is now. Like much of Manhattan.

Considering that was nearly 30 years ago, I wouldn't count on it.

Prior to the 1984 incident Goetz had been the victim of muggers, in NYC which at the time was murder capital USA.

Why don't they just fine him, collect some revenue, and move on?

Like R1, I've never taken drugs in my life, and it depresses me that so many people are dependent on them. But arresting him for selling $30 worth of pot is a waste of time and taxpayer money.

He ought to rot in jail.
