Would you own a slave?

If slavery was legal- not based on race, color, gender, etc.- and you could not abuse a slave in any fashion, and you had to set that slave free within a certain amount of time, would you own one?

by Anonymousreply 6711/28/2013

I'd need to see the catalogue first

by Anonymousreply 111/01/2013

Why? Interns can be had without all your silly ground rules, and you don't even need to feed or house them.

by Anonymousreply 311/01/2013

No. It's disgusting.

If you want a slave, go to an S&M club, you'll have as many as you want.

by Anonymousreply 411/01/2013

A sex-slave boy-toy, sure. For a little while at least.

But not in any other circumstance.

by Anonymousreply 511/01/2013

No. It sounds like a completely moronic idea.

by Anonymousreply 611/01/2013

[quote]and you could not abuse a slave in any fashion

Owning another human being is a form of abuse.

No, I would not want to own a slave.

by Anonymousreply 711/01/2013

Realistically, I would be uncomfortable with the idea, just as I am with our treatment of the Mexicans. In the future, people will look back on this era and be just as judgmental about us as we are re the slavers. We live more comfortably for less than we would if these people were regarded as equal. Fact.

by Anonymousreply 811/01/2013

I believe that straight people call that having children.

by Anonymousreply 911/01/2013

WW for R9.

by Anonymousreply 1011/01/2013

Many straight people would argue that it's they who are the slaves to their children, R9.

by Anonymousreply 1111/01/2013

There's an old middle eastern saying: "From birth to age seven, you are the child's slave. From seven to fourteen, the child is YOUR slave!".

Occasionally I fantasize about having a sex slave or even a slave housekeeper, but it would too icky for words in real life. Some things are just fantasies.

by Anonymousreply 1311/01/2013

I don't even want the responsibility of owning a pet, let alone a human that you have to feed and shelter.

by Anonymousreply 1411/01/2013

It's OK, it's all been outsourced to 'far away' countries.

by Anonymousreply 1511/01/2013

Who wouldn't want someone who fusses and flatters and makes you think that your all that matters whose only aim in life is to serve you and make you feel she doesn't deserve you?

by Anonymousreply 1611/01/2013

I once knew a gay guy who used to say, "Everybody needs a houseboy!"

Now that I'm older, I appreciate that thought.

by Anonymousreply 1711/01/2013

Slave, no. Loyal and fiercely devoted manservant, absolutely.

Punjab from Little Orphan Annie would be my first pick, but in a pinch I could go for Kato from the Green Hornet.

by Anonymousreply 1811/01/2013

No. They would spit in my food.

by Anonymousreply 1911/01/2013

You mean a personal assistant?

by Anonymousreply 2011/01/2013

I think I pay my cleaning lady and landscaper a lot less in wages than it would cost to own them. I don't get the economics of slavery. You have to buy the slave which is expensive, then you have to feed, clothe and house them. Isn't it much cheaper to purchase slave labor from free workers at a reasonable hourly rate?

by Anonymousreply 2111/01/2013

Only if I can get one with free shipping on Amazon Prime.

by Anonymousreply 2211/01/2013

No, the only ones that would own a slave are the only ones willing to eventually be a slave. And I'm not interested in that dynamic.

by Anonymousreply 2311/01/2013

I would be a slave if it meant being fucked by Perry King in Mandingo.

by Anonymousreply 2411/01/2013

no, why would I?

by Anonymousreply 2511/01/2013

No, but I would love a cute white guy to pretend he was, just one or two weekends a month.

by Anonymousreply 2711/01/2013

No.

by Anonymousreply 2811/01/2013

R12 is clearly not a slave to grammar and punctuation.

by Anonymousreply 2911/01/2013

In slave times, this was called a "body servant."

by Anonymousreply 3011/01/2013

Slaves were indicative of the eras in which they were in demand. Since rarely any Americans live on large agricultural plots of land that need tending to, I don't see why you'd need a slave. Sure, you could make them clean your home but I'd much rather have a cleaning lady come over a couple of times a month than to have the cleaning lady LIVE with you and have to take care of her food and other needs.

Slaves just don't fit into the modern lifestyle. Now, a sex slave is another thing, but I'd even get sick of that. A hooker is essentially your sex slave for the allotted amount of time you'd paid for them. That's fine enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 3111/01/2013

As long as they have broad shoulders for picking cotton.

by Anonymousreply 3211/01/2013

Yes. I have had several personal assistants and all considered themselves slaves.

by Anonymousreply 3311/01/2013

I guess OP never quite understood that the very essence of slavery is abuse.

by Anonymousreply 3411/01/2013

A large penis is always welcome.

by Anonymousreply 3511/01/2013

Okay, R31, if slavery were legal and tolerable on a personal level (as if), there's no reason it couldn't find a modern financial model.

Instead of having multiple slaves working the fields, I could save up for two or three slaves, and send them out to work the drive-thru windows. Their paychecks could provide a modest lifestyle in a low cost of living area, and they could keep the house clean when they weren't out funding my early retirement. Of course it'd mean sharing my home with people who hate me and would kill me in my sleep if they got a chance, but getting out of working for a living might make it worthwhile.

by Anonymousreply 3611/01/2013

My family actually did kind of own a slave before we moved to the US. It was a third world country and there was a war going on at the time. A woman was trying to sell one of her daughters. My aunt bought her because she was afraid where the girl might end up (most likely prostitution). She was free to leave whenever she wanted, but she had a much better life in our house than she would have anywhere else. We had to leave quickly when the war escalated, but I heard she met a guy and married him soon after we left.

by Anonymousreply 3711/01/2013

i couldn't even handle having paid live-in help because of the guilt, so NO.

by Anonymousreply 3811/01/2013

What R23 said. When one has a slave, they become a slave themselves.

by Anonymousreply 3911/01/2013

We he'd a slave when I was a kid. She told me I was special, smart, and important!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 4011/01/2013

Nobody wants slavery except the 1%.

And nobody I know treats Mexicans like dirt either. I have to wonder what circles some of you travel in.

by Anonymousreply 4111/01/2013

I would say at least half of our citizens are slaves. We work for very low wages, have no benefits and don't even get time off for vacation. That's our working class...slaves.

by Anonymousreply 4211/02/2013

Your idea fails R36, when you consider that a much more financially rewarding model already exists legally without enslaving people. Instead of "saving up" to buy people, you could save up to buy a business and make those same people work for you for slave wages. You don't have to work, but you reap the benefit of others' hard labor. AND you don't own anyone, so you are not responsible for making sure they have a place to live, healthcare or enough food. Employees are not likely to kill you in your sleep either.

by Anonymousreply 4311/02/2013

It depends. Can you return one if they don't work out?

by Anonymousreply 4411/02/2013

Lots of former slaves owned slaves - some to keep the latter safe, others because they wanted the benefits. Happened a lot in Brazil.

We need a thread about those slaving bastards, the Portuguese, and how they are responsible for the consequences of slavery that we're still dealing with, from Rio to Detroit.

by Anonymousreply 4511/02/2013

I would want my slave to know something about birthing' babies.

by Anonymousreply 4611/02/2013

This thread really takes the cake for DL creepiness.

by Anonymousreply 4711/02/2013

oh no r47....this is mild. New in town?

by Anonymousreply 4811/02/2013

We'll see r48, I predict a possible "thread doesn't exist" pop-up sign in its future.

by Anonymousreply 4911/02/2013

OP, would expenses be deductible for a slave as they are for a child?

by Anonymousreply 5011/02/2013

I would rather just have a variety of hired help. It would be awkward to have a slave living with us. Not to mention having to feed one. Send Rosario over once a week to clean the house and Jose to do the landscaping and I'm good.

by Anonymousreply 5111/02/2013

OP is a fucking asshole.

by Anonymousreply 5211/02/2013

R45-well said!

by Anonymousreply 5411/02/2013

R50 Expenses for a child are NOT deductible.

by Anonymousreply 5511/02/2013

I definitely see hit sitcom potential somewhere in here.

by Anonymousreply 5611/02/2013

Moody, mama's boys, doesn't have any friends (red flag), shallow, insecure, unable to laugh at himself, different sense of humor or not getting the joke. Also, cartoon character tattoos or underwear is a big letdown and no-no.

by Anonymousreply 5711/23/2013

We got houses full of 'em, they're pretty neat to have. You should get some.

by Anonymousreply 5811/23/2013

[quote]and you could not abuse a slave in any fashion,

What would the point be, then?

by Anonymousreply 5911/23/2013

sick fuck, no

by Anonymousreply 6011/25/2013

I can't- I am not a government official

by Anonymousreply 6111/25/2013

I would not unless it was made legal. The illegal slave trade going on in the world today is a tragedy. It would also have to be well regulated, or else abuse would surely occur.

by Anonymousreply 6211/28/2013

NO! What the fuck is wrong with you, OP, that you would entertain that notion?

by Anonymousreply 6311/28/2013

It is much easier to pay them a substandard wage as an independent contractor. Plus, with Obamacare, they are eligible for free healthcare.

The Walmarting of the American family.

We may have shipped the jobs to China but those pesky poor people are SUCH a BARGAIN!

by Anonymousreply 6411/28/2013

Fuck no. I'm white and fiscally conservative and know that slavery is the definition of evil.

by Anonymousreply 6511/28/2013

Let me be your Viedenflugen!

by Anonymousreply 6611/28/2013

I'm a bred-in-the-bone humanist. In order to be a slaveowner I'd basically have to be an entirely different person.
