A "character-driven show"

What does that exactly mean? What would be the opposite?

Plot driven. A show that's only about moving plot point to plot point without stopping to consider what anyone thinks about what's going on. A lot of big blockbusters are just plot with two-dimensional characters which is why they're dull. There is not subtext to characters, only actions.

I think Breaking Bad balanced the two perfectly. Lots of cliff-hangers, action, and shooting. But really took the time to examine how each of these characters felt about what was going on and how they related to each other.

thirtysomething was a character driven show. The plot for the pilot was whether Michael and Hope could find a babysitter.
