Just do your damn job and drop the attitude
I decided to go in to work about one hour early today and noticed our office was about 77 degrees and climbing, way too warm. I contacted the maintenance guy and told him. Instead of just saying "I'll fix it", he starts in on explaining how things are on a schedule and I'm in earlier than usual, but he'll "go take care of it".
The whole time he's dripping with attitude, like I'M at fault for coming to work early. How hard is it to not have my office fucking blasting heat first thing in the morning? I think I'm going to report him, I'm so sick of everyone around here acting like its an inconvenience to do their fucking jobs.

The worst is ITS. Everything is a fucking policy and procedure. "We can't do that blah blah." The real answer is: it's too much work.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||10/29/2013|
You only work in a shop you know.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||10/29/2013|
I don't know your entire situation, op. Often times the systems are part of a schedule programed at another location. At least when I worked in a large building. Our hvac was controlled by headquarters which were 700 miles away, it was a big deal to adjust the temperature. Ridiculous, nonetheless.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||10/29/2013|
He doesn't work for you and you disrupted his schedule. You have no right to be at the work place early and ordering others around.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||10/29/2013|
In Martha Stewart's early days she picked a building on 42nd between Fifth and Sixth as her headquarters because the windows opened.

Not really - the problem is you people think we hand you computers and laptops and they are YOURS. WEEEEE I got me a new PC!!. You put all kinds of personal crap on them, break them and then yell at us because they don't work...or bitch about why you can't load ELMO count 123 on your work laptop for your kids to use.
Here are some of my favorites -
Had a pc sent to me to fix from a remote office. User called me and yelled for three minutes about how we were all imcompetent, if it was not fixed he would have me fired..you know the usual. So I plug it in, fire it up and boom, his desktop is a porn star pic. No Lie. The up pops this porno chat site log in, in additon to all the games he had installed.
Laptop user, sales person on the road constantly calling in complaining he cannot vpn in. Again calls us imcompetent, we are costing the company millions in sales. Brings in laptop, up pops the AOL dialer which is interfearing with his network connection, oh and his bit torrent client not to mention about 20 kids games. We reimage the laptop get it working as it should and return it. He calls us screaming that his kids games are gone, where is AOL and all his bit torrent files....
HR director calls me to her office. Says she wants a swimming fish screen saver. I told her the corporate policy is the corporate screen saver. This 50 something woman looks and me and says "Steve the VP has a swimming fish screen saver, why can I have it?" This is the person who wrote the corporate IT policy on computer usage acting like an 8 year old. When I explained to her Steve..bought his own laptop becaues he wanted a special kind and it was not a corporate image, she told me she would talk to my boss then....really? over swimming fish?
So to the OP - your HVAC is on a timer - you came in early and complained it was to hot. It is on a timer for a reason, heating the office before everyone arrives saves energy but no lets be sure to change it because you decided to come in early. I think the attitude is coming from you. His damn job is not to make sure you are comfortable in leu of saving money for the company.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||10/29/2013|
I hope the guy did nothing, just to annoy OP, who was forced to wait for the timer to kick-in.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||10/29/2013|
well put R7. Self-entitled assholes like OP who believe that the world revolves around their immediate needs must be the bane of the IT department's existence. Their anger/bewilderment when their computer is not immediately fixed (or the entire office energy saving heating policy is not overridden because their tooties are cold ... and they expect a standing ovation because they came in a whole HOUR early) blows my mind.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||10/29/2013|
Sounds to me like the OP is the one who needs to drop the attitude.

Actually, I think IT people are great and treat them well because they're taking care of complicated machine that I can't handle on my own. That has nothing to do with giving me attitude because I ask politely if the temperature in my office can be turned down.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||10/29/2013|
Everyone at work hates you OP.
And with good reason.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||10/29/2013|
R7--That was full of attitude.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||10/29/2013|
You should go tell, OP. Tell on that bad man!
|by Anonymous||reply 15||10/29/2013|
OP, I was going to add that really it is just no use at all to complain about anything at your office, but you know that.
It is a case of understanding what every person's job is at all the levels, and we obviously can't do that, not any of us.
However, its the miserable little fuckers that have to be snotty, rude, and have attitude, either sometimes or ALL the fucking time that makes any job in any company one you don't want to get up and go to work for.
I don't mean you, OP. You're just venting about shitty attitudes and wondering how these assholes get away with it constantly.
So, for the assholes I've had to deal with in every job I've ever had anywhere in 45 years, a big fuck you to you and the horse you rode in on.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||10/29/2013|
OP is such a stellar worker that he took time off from work to use the company computer to goof around on DataLounge to bore us all with his problems.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||10/29/2013|
I don't know where you work, but I work in Soho in Manhattan and it's incredibly difficult to regulate the temperature. Our building was built in like 1850. A lot of people don't understand this and complain to me.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||10/29/2013|
OP, you should know by now these threads never go the way you'll want them to.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||10/29/2013|
r7 here - of course I have an attitude. You would too if you were constantly bad mouthed and blamed for not allowing people to do what ever the hell they wanted with company owned equipment.
It never ceases to amaze me that people cannot separate work from home. Just because you got that cool EAT PRAY LOVE desktop on your home PC does not mean I have to put it on your workstation. My company blocks facebook and all outside email (gmail, yahoo etc) and we have been for 7 years now. I still get tickets assigned to me that so and so cannot get to "google" and after an hour of trying to find out what they mean you figure out they want their gmail. GET A SMART PHONE... (and they have smart phones but they are not allowed to sit there an use them checking email and face book - which is why they all want it on their work pcs.).
We work with three sets of government regulation to protect your personal information..but you would think this is Lenin's regime the way people who work here complain. I have to explain, to high level executives mind you, that our company will face huge fines if we are caught violating any of these rules..so no I don't care who you are.
Speaking of executives...we have a whole IT staff dedicated to them, the are red carpet service IT. I work with them constantly as the ridiculous requests come from the highest levels. We have one executive where they keep 7 ipads fully charged for him because he uses it but never charges it. At the end of the day when he leaves, his executive assistant puts a freshly charged one in his brief case before he leaves, making sure all the data is synced.
Why 7? he loses them all the time or decides to give them to his grandkids and claims he lost them who knows. We did a find my ipad on one once and it was at his home...
|by Anonymous||reply 20||10/29/2013|
Wow, do people really get away with downloading that much personal stuff on a work computer?? I work for the federal government, for the most part our jobs are fairly secure, but we could be fired on the spot for that, no joke.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||10/29/2013|
OP, you should be glad I'm not the maintenance guy at your building. I would have turned the thermostat up 10 more degrees.
You're the prick with the attitude.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||10/29/2013|
I've worked with a variety of IT and maintenance people.
My experience has been pretty consistent.
You get what you pay for.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||10/29/2013|
This is the problem.... elitist white collar professionals,managers,administrators and the executive class have NEVER respected labor...
|by Anonymous||reply 24||10/29/2013|
Take a SNUGGIE to work from now on you ASSHOLE!
|by Anonymous||reply 25||10/29/2013|

I disagree. To the facilities guy, OP was one of those assholes. Really, OP. You couldn't have waited 45 minutes for the schedule to kick in?
I often had to work weekends, early mornings and late nights. I kept shorts, t-shirts and jackets in my cube. I also kept the phone number and key code of the automated service to turn the lights on after hours.

I once found over 1 TB of porn on our file servers - organized by asian, black, white, white/black, lesbian...etc then sub folders of girl girl, solo, girl.guy..it was amazing. I could have had him fired one the spot, but I gave him a chance. I emailed him without telling him I found a ton of porn, I sent the generic "you are using a large amount of data that appears to be personal files. Please delete them at your earliest opportunity."
What I got back was a nasty email about wasting his time and he could not be bothered to do my job. I replied back suggesting he take a look at the data and delete it, but if he did not have the time I would have to escalate it to his manager.
He finally realized what I was talking about and deleted all of it, and emailed me a simple - thank you.

Best line I ever heard from maintenance. We were having trouble in a new office suite with humidity. Temperature was fine - but for whatever reason the humidity was high.
"I might be able to fix it, but I'd have to get the manual and read it."
|by Anonymous||reply 29||10/29/2013|
R7, an old friend of mine who used to work in corporate IT had to deal with similar BS. One particular frau was always asking to install kitty-cat screensavers, wasting time on fanfic sites, downloading games, etc. This was around 2001, and for shits and giggles he replaced her then-current Windows machine with a 200MHz Pentium with 16MB RAM. The VP of the company loved to watch porn. Finally, there was the octogenarian secretary of the CEO who still insisted on using WordPerfect for DOS and was totally flummoxed by e-mail.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||10/29/2013|
You're either too nice or a complete sap, R28.
You give the fuckhead a chance, and he responds by insulting you?
I would've escalated that shit up the chain until every single employee knew about his little "hobby".
|by Anonymous||reply 32||10/29/2013|
I was kind of impressed at the balls he had to store that much porn on a company file server. We actually took a poll about if we get him fired or save his ass. He was a high stress employee so I had some sympathy. These guys work 70 hours a week sometime so I expected the shitty response. If he did it again he would have been gone.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||10/29/2013|
r28, I would have replaced all the hetero porn with gay porn and then reported him.

Why is everyone being so harsh to OP? If I am the first one in the office and there is something wrong, I call the help desk so that they have time to fix it before everyone else gets in, too. Is it so unreasonable to think that if your office is hotter than it usually is that there might be a problem? Why wait until there are 50 more bodies in the room to make it worse? What's the fucking deal with asking a maintenance person to look into it? If the person is the person to contact with problems, then he needs to drop the attitude! A simple "oh, the heating/cooling is on a timer and there usually isn't anyone in your office this early but I can adjust it now" would be the only correct response. Now, if OP knew this, then OP is being an asshole. But why should anyone be in fear of asking the help to do their job?
|by Anonymous||reply 36||10/29/2013|
I hear ya OP. I have just moved back home after a few years in Japan and am all too familiar with the diva performances and CBF attitude one receives predominately in Western countries.
A similar kind of request in Japan would be met with, "Yes, I understand, and will sort it out."
|by Anonymous||reply 38||10/29/2013|
[OP], FUCK OFF! You do not sign his pay check, so why should he cater to you?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||10/29/2013|
You're an asshole OP. So you had the whole office a/c turned on early to accomodate you.
Go fuck yourself - sweat it out.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||10/29/2013|
r36 please. OP gets to take home his paycheck because whatever business he works for doesn't want to waste money on running a huge AC system just to cool his fat ass off an hour earlier. OP sounds like a soft bitch if he can't stand 77-80 degrees for an hour. He should've rolled up his sleeves and done HIS damn job.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||10/29/2013|
[quote]You're an asshole OP. So you had the whole office a/c turned on early to accomodate you.
That's a good point (as is "go fuck yourself" for this OP).
Where I used to work, security people would have the air conditioning turned on for your floor outside normal hours, but you had to provide a charge code for the expense.
Apparently, it's unimaginably expensive - something in the range of $150 AN HOUR for each floor. So, it's hardly surprising that it wouldn't have been chilling away before office hours when keener OP showed up.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||10/29/2013|
I asked SO FUCKING NICELY you would have thought I was a slave addressing the mistress of the house. HE'S the one who threw attitude.
