When will we get our first female Secretary of Defense?

Isn't it kind of ironic that we may well get our first female president in a few years, but no one's talking about when we could get our first female Secretary of Defense?

by Anonymousreply 1710/28/2013

We've had several women as Sec of State.

by Anonymousreply 110/27/2013

that wasn't the question, r1. Let's stay focused, please.

by Anonymousreply 210/27/2013

DOD's a tougher nut to crack than State or even the White House.

It'll be a while before we have a woman as Sec. of Defense.

by Anonymousreply 310/27/2013

We came pretty damn close, but Obama chose Chuck Hagel instead. Michele Flournoy was on the shortlist...

by Anonymousreply 410/27/2013

Because Obama, like Clinton, thinks in stereotypes. Secretary of State is good for women, because it's a negotiating role. But Defense is for REPUBLICANS! Perhaps Ms. Flournoy forgot to keep up a John Birch membership.

by Anonymousreply 510/27/2013

What exactly is ironic about it, Alanis?

I think there was a female Republican under Bush who was Deputy Defense Secretary.

by Anonymousreply 810/27/2013

We have a wonderful new crop of girls in the pool this year. The skills are first rate and they are willing to travel!

by Anonymousreply 910/28/2013

What R6 said.

by Anonymousreply 1010/28/2013

How is this ironic? It's not like the skill sets are identical. Lots of Presidents (most, probably) would never be considered good for secretary of defense. The only recent one who might have is George H. W. Bush.

Could you see Obama as Secretary of Defense? GW Bush? Bill Clinton? Carter or even Reagan? Ironically (in the correct sense), besides GHW Bush only Jimmy Carter had any real military experience.

by Anonymousreply 1110/28/2013

Why would this be ironic? Please explain.

by Anonymousreply 1210/28/2013

R7, I disagree. It will happen someday.

I own this thread.

It's ironic because the Glass Ceiling is prevents women more the higher they go in government or in business. The presidency is without a doubt higher than SOD.

by Anonymousreply 1510/28/2013

Anything's possible.

by Anonymousreply 1610/28/2013

Higher in rank, but more closely associated with/beholden to the military, which has a lower glass ceiling.
