Celebrities who were ripped off

Doris Day

Debbie Reynolds

Elvis Presley

by Anonymousreply 5609/30/2013

Judy Garland

by Anonymousreply 109/27/2013

Madoff investors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

by Anonymousreply 209/27/2013

Doris, who I love, never got to do anything worth a shit, but it was doubtful if she was up to anything other than she did. She hardly was ripped off.

Debbie Reynolds was ripped off by her husbands, not in her career. In fact, she did pretty well for someone with no capacity for depth. Her first two movies were her best.

Elvis was a lazy asshole. He was not ripped off. He was too lazy to learn how to take care of himself.

Judy? Yes. She could have won an Oscar for any one of at least four movies. However, she truly was ripped off when she saw the ridiculous Rita Moreno steal her Oscar for "Judgment at Nuremberg." She also should have won for "Star Is Born," but in retrospect Grace Kelly can be seen as horrible competition.

And R2 is wrong. Those two were just salivating over a fast buck.

Didn't Billy Joel's ex-brother-in-law rip him off?

Joni Mitchell claims David Geffen ripped her off via double-dipping: career management, then grosses from booking her tours.

by Anonymousreply 1109/27/2013

Lainie Kazan

by Anonymousreply 1209/27/2013

Pretty much all of them until they learn to keep an eye on every penny.

by Anonymousreply 1309/27/2013

Everyone who recorded for Motown.

by Anonymousreply 1409/27/2013

Patty Duke was ripped off by two people who she met in the parking lot and then they became her accountants. Obviously this was during a manic episode.

Doris Day was ripped off by her husband Marty Melcher.

Elvis was ripped off by his manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker. Of course, Elvis was too stupid and stoned to know or care what was going on.

Creedence Clearwater Revival were ripped off by Saul Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records. John Fogerty eventually broke up the band and became a solo act in order to get out of his crooked contract with Fantasy. Zaentz used the money he stole to become a movie producer.

James Garner was ripped off by the producers of The Rockford Files. Of course, Garner was stupid enough to sign a "percentage of the profit" contract. Producers pay accountants big money to make sure that movies and television shows never make a profit.

r11, Dagwood was a son-of-a-bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1809/28/2013

Carol Channing by her husband Charles Lowe.

Unfunny comedian Dane Cook by his half-brother.

Gilligan's Island cast ripped off by Sherwood Schwartz

by Anonymousreply 2309/28/2013

Actually, Dagwood did. In marrying Blondie, who was considered a floozy gold-digger, Dagwood Bumstead, who was a member of a very rich family, lost his inheritance and ended up working for Mr. Bumstead and living a middle-class life.

by Anonymousreply 2409/28/2013

Annette Bening was ripped off by not receiving a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "The Grifters," and Anjelica Huston was ripped off by not getting the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the same movie.

Two of the best performances ever.

John Cusack, however, was not ripped off. How that needle-nosed snark had a career....

by Anonymousreply 2509/28/2013

Pretty much all of them at one time or another, I'd imagined.

by Anonymousreply 2609/28/2013

The Beatles' licensing agreements and publishing contracts were famously unfair.

by Anonymousreply 2709/28/2013

The great band "Badfinger" was pretty much destroyed by a greedy manager. It is a very sad story with suicides by two of the members.

TLC got shafted by their managers too.

by Anonymousreply 2809/28/2013

Pussy galore

[quote]Doris, who I love, never got to do anything worth a shit, but it was doubtful if she was up to anything other than she did.

Let me first congratulate you for even making the attempt to learn English (a notoriously difficult language), and to then encourage you to keep working on your syntax so that one day you can write in it coherently.

by Anonymousreply 3009/28/2013

R18 "James Garner was ripped off by the producers of The Rockford Files. Of course, Garner was stupid enough to sign a "percentage of the profit" contract. Producers pay accountants big money to make sure that movies and television shows never make a profit."

Are you sure it was Rockford Files? I remember James Garner getting into a lawsuit 20 or more years after the fact over his share of the profits from "Maverick." Did he get ripped off a SECOND time???

by Anonymousreply 3109/28/2013

Joe Hamilton, Carol Burnett's first husband, ripped off all the players on The Carol Burnett Show except his wife. Though the show was in the top 10 of the ratings during almost the entirety of its run, the regulars earned peanuts, which was finally why Lyle Waggoner left to do Wonder Woman.

by Anonymousreply 3209/28/2013

Elvis was markedly insecure and intimidated by authority, not uncommon for a poor person who wasn't expected to amount to anything. He never shook it off and it underscored both his worst decisions and his best qualities.

Deriding him as lazy and stupid for not defeating industry collusion and exploitation is lazy and stupid. It wasn't just Parker and the court called it collusion and conspiracy, among other things.

by Anonymousreply 3309/28/2013

Yeah I'm definitely sympathetic to Elvis, a talented guy but fame just ate him alive.

by Anonymousreply 3409/28/2013

R33, is that really why Lyle left? Funny, he is hardly ever mentioned in any of the Carol Burnett reunion shows, either. Which I find odd.

by Anonymousreply 3509/28/2013

R33 sounds plausible, Vicki Lawrence has complained that Hamilton rarely allows her to do her Mama character, which he still owns. Sounds like a real dickhead.

by Anonymousreply 3609/28/2013

Trish Van Devere's husband, George C. Scott, spent all her money on overweight Filipino hookers.

by Anonymousreply 3709/28/2013

r37, Joe Hamilton died in 1991, and Vicki does her "Vicki Lawrence and Mama" act/show at casinos.

by Anonymousreply 3809/28/2013

It must be a matter of getting a new tv show developed then, r39, because she has definitely complained that she has repeatedly been prevented from using the character. I guess it's Hamilton's heirs who still own it then.

by Anonymousreply 3909/28/2013

Betty Grable.

Cliff Robertson.

Many child actors.

by Anonymousreply 4009/28/2013

by Anonymousreply 4109/28/2013

R34, silly cunt, "lazy and stupid" are rather lazy and stupid terms to use in a thread where people note that Elvis was less ripped off than people may say.

by Anonymousreply 4209/28/2013

Sometime earlier mentioned The Beatles and its true. They were paid a fifth of a penny apiece from their record sales. Brian Epstein was the fifth Beatle. No pun intended.

They were completely ripped off for merchandising when they arrived in America. There was no precedence, so Brian was taken advantage of..

by Anonymousreply 4309/28/2013

R43, festering scab, brings nothing to the table.

by Anonymousreply 4409/28/2013

James Garner was ripped off on both Maverick and The Rockford Files.

by Anonymousreply 4509/28/2013

John McEnroe and Robert DeNiro got ripped off by Lawrence Salander.

by Anonymousreply 4609/28/2013

Jackie Coogan by his parents, big time.

Hence, the Coogan Law.

But . . . he did get to fuck/marry Betty Grable in her prime.

by Anonymousreply 4709/28/2013

Audrey Hepburn. Her husband spent all her money, leaving her destitute when he died.

by Anonymousreply 4809/29/2013

"Audrey Hepburn. Her husband spent all her money, leaving her destitute when he died."

Which husband was that?

Audrey was married and divorced twice, to Mel Ferrer and Dr. Andrea Dotti.

Her final years were spent with Robert Wolders, widower of Merle Oberon.

Audrey was never left destitute by anyone.

by Anonymousreply 4909/29/2013

I remember reading somewhere that Sal Mineo was ripped off by family members who were leeching from him.

I think there's been at least a few recorded cases of celebrities' families ripping them off. There's another one that escapes my memory.

Just as a matter of interest, you are more likely to be ripped off by a family member than a stranger.

by Anonymousreply 5109/29/2013

Miley Cyrus fans.

by Anonymousreply 5209/29/2013

Bette Davis's daughter BD and husband Jeremy Hyman (there's one for the "Unfortunate Surnames" thread) sponged off of Davis for years. Neither of them worked. Davis supported them and their two boys for years. Thank God she came to her senses and disowned BD after the latter wrote "My Mother's Keeper" otherwise she probably would have ended up totally broke. I think the Hymans lived rather well in Bucks County, PA, for a long time.

(Oh, and I know the real word is spelled "hymen," but still it's not great as a last name.)
