Brian Depalma's Body Double!!!!

Discuss! Freaks me out!! The stalking scene is brilliant!! Melanie!!

by Anonymousreply 4707/15/2014

Love it. The scene with the kiss and the 360 pan is gorgeous. I didn't get the film the first time I saw it, it almost appeared as if it was a dream.

by Anonymousreply 109/25/2013

The ending still kind of confuses me.

by Anonymousreply 209/25/2013

De Palma was so good back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 309/25/2013

for r2: SPOILER AHEAD (obviously).

My take on the ending is either: - He survived, got over his phobia a la James Stewart in Vertigo, got his part back AND got the girl. or: - The whole movie was a day dream that played in his head for a split second. Reality is only what happens before the opening credits and fight before the end.

Actually my original take on the ending was: "What a piece of shit to waste 90 minutes on". It took me a while to appreciate it and embrace its bizarre camp value. De Palma should thank Melanie Griffith, who gave the only memorable performance and kept me from dismissing what I thought then was just a hot mess. (It IS a hot mess but an enjoyable one and you could hardly find a better time capsule of 80s aesthetic, or what passed for it.)

by Anonymousreply 409/25/2013

And people forget how brilliant Melanie was (when she was cast right as here). The scene where she casually states her porno limits -- "No S&M or any variations of that particular bent, no water sports..." I mean. what legit actress could/would play that now? In a mainstream movie, no less.

Women in film these days are dull, dull, dull.

by Anonymousreply 509/25/2013

Love this movie! Melanie is a hoot, Deborah Shelton is stunning.

by Anonymousreply 609/25/2013

Deborah Shelton always seems dubbed to me

by Anonymousreply 709/25/2013

P.S. Pauline Kael, a big DePalma fan (to much criticism), thought Craig Wasson was the most wan lead ever in one of the director's films and she's kind of right. The scene with Holly Johnson and Frankie Goes to Hollywood aside, Wasson was pretty bland.

by Anonymousreply 809/25/2013

Yeah,. I think Sheldon was famously dubbed -- by another actress. Like Andie McDowell having her whole role looped by Glenn Close in "Greystoke". Amazing she survived that.

by Anonymousreply 909/25/2013

is the dubbing by Helen Shaver? remember her? it sounds like her.

by Anonymousreply 1009/25/2013

The internet consensus is that Deborah Shelton's voice was dubbed by Helen Shaver.

by Anonymousreply 1109/26/2013

Brian De Palma is a terrible director. He is an art director bordering on the set decorator, at best. Perhaps he should stick to opera, though I'm not sure he would succeed there either.

by Anonymousreply 1209/26/2013

thanks r11...freaky how I recognized her

by Anonymousreply 1309/26/2013

R8 I agree that Wasson was a terrible choice for lead actor. Never liked his face, on film. That's what ruined the movie for me. Hate to admit it, but DePalma favorite John Travolta, at that time , would have been a better choice. He was sexy then ( don't think of current day J.T.), and that's what the movie was about - sexual obsession, or sex. With (sorry) throughly unattractive Wasson, in the lead, the whole movie failed. Good example of mis-casting.

by Anonymousreply 1409/26/2013

I think wasson was great casting. He was the perfect patsy.

by Anonymousreply 1509/26/2013

Wasson was one of those actors, that appeared, inexplicably, at that time, and got big movie roles for a couple years, then disappeared.("The Boys Of Company C, Carny, Four Friends, Ghost Story"), culminating with "BD". You could say his 'glory' years were 1980-'83.....then nothing.

by Anonymousreply 1609/26/2013

R16, you're forgetting Wasson's lead role in 1987's A Nightmare in Elm Street 3.

The score and Frankie Goes To Hollywood's RELAX are two more things that make this movie. There's also something oddly sexy about villain Gregg Henry.

by Anonymousreply 1709/26/2013

Speaking of brushes w. fame, I met Craig Wasson at Disneyland in the Tom Sawyer tree. I walked past him standing on a landing by himself (he said he was with his daughter), and then I thought I should turn around and make sure who he was, so I asked him if he was in "Ghost Story" and he said yes, we chatted a bit, he was friendly, very nice, a little on the short side. Oh, yeah and this was ages ago.

by Anonymousreply 1809/26/2013

Wasson was the prototypical "good actor, bad movie star". Others included Ben Masters, Ben Cross, lots of Bens actually...

by Anonymousreply 1909/26/2013

I thought Wasson was ok. The character is supposed to be kind of a loser and I think he captured the naivety of the role.

by Anonymousreply 2009/27/2013

Great movie to watch stoned.

And, I agree, WHET Wasson?

by Anonymousreply 2109/27/2013

BD a cleaner QT

by Anonymousreply 2209/27/2013

One of Pino Donaggio's best scores (though nowhere near as good as Dressed to Kill, Carrie, Blow Out)...

by Anonymousreply 2309/27/2013

Melanie looked curvier and sexier in Working Girl.

by Anonymousreply 2409/27/2013

Didnt we just have this conversation a couple of months ago?

by Anonymousreply 2509/27/2013

she had a hot body throughout the 80s, r24 . she always made the designer lingerie look good in whatever scene. shit hit the fan in the 90's hard with her. bonfire of the vanities is a classic in so many ways, usually for the wrong reasons. one of those reasons is melanie's breasts; the movie is a continuity mess because her chest continualy balloons and deflates between scenes. seems mel got breast implants in the middle of shooting. she may have had nearly as much plastic surgery that decade as mickey rourke, and it wasn't much better for her.

by Anonymousreply 2609/27/2013

Melanie is even better in Jonathan Demme's "Something Wild." It's a terrific movie. I could never understand why it wasn't a huge hit. Has anyone here seen it?

by Anonymousreply 2709/27/2013

There's no originality in DePalma's work. He stole from the great directors like Hitchcock and Eisenstein.

by Anonymousreply 2809/27/2013

Awful, inept movie. Melanie is the only highlight.

by Anonymousreply 2909/27/2013

What stalking scene? It was all pretty much one long stalking scene. Loved it at the time, but that's embarrassing to me now. Doesn't hold up at all, De Palma is basically a hack, but even he did better.

by Anonymousreply 3009/27/2013

Yes r27, it's a good movie and a breakthrough role for Ray Liotta, who was so rough trade hot in it. He was a favorite jerk-off fantasy for me at the time.

by Anonymousreply 3109/27/2013

It just came on. I love this movie. Something about the dreamy quality of it, which Pino's score only adds to. There's something totally fuckable about Gregg Henry in this, too.

by Anonymousreply 3207/14/2014

Really. How much does a movie have to blow for Melanie to be the only highlight?

by Anonymousreply 3307/14/2014

Such a silly movie. Terrible story, bad acting.

by Anonymousreply 3407/14/2014

It never made a lick of sense that Wasson didn't get naked in his audition for the porn producer. Wasson did frontal nudity in Ghost Story so my guess is DePalma didn't want it.

by Anonymousreply 3507/14/2014

Dull, dull movie. The bizarre thing is, when I saw the name Craig Wasson, the first movie I thought of was "Rollercoaster" in Sensurround!

by Anonymousreply 3607/14/2014

I thought this movie was terrific when it came out, but don't think I've ever seen it since then. Yeah, that guy Wasson (couldn't even remember his name, I only remember Melanie Griffith in that) sure disappeared. Not surprising, he wasn't good looking and not particularly talented.

by Anonymousreply 3707/14/2014

I've always thought Wasson was very good looking. Love him in Ghost Story, especially his nudity. Small dick, but whatever. Loved him diddling Alice Krige's tits in the bathtub with his foot in that one. Woof!

In the 90s, he starred as a pedophile priest in an hour long HBO drama that aired one afternoon. I remember pre-cumming a lot while watching that. I was still very young at the time, and the thought of being molested by Father Craig was the perfect taboo turn-on.

by Anonymousreply 3807/14/2014

Wasson had a HOT body for the day.... with Bill Maurer's face. I thought he was well cast.

by Anonymousreply 3907/14/2014

Another one who liked Craig Wasson especially in a short lived tv series called "Skag" with Karl Malden as the head of a family of Pittsburgh steel workers. Oh, and in a little role as a dumb college student on Bob Newhart's 70s series.

by Anonymousreply 4007/15/2014

Terrible movie.

by Anonymousreply 4107/15/2014

"Someone's following you."

Deborah takes a few beats, slowly removes her sunglasses, takes a few more beats and utters..

"I know!"

by Anonymousreply 4207/15/2014

Didn't Angie Dickinson play Melanie's tits in that movie?

by Anonymousreply 4307/15/2014

Someone else played Angie Dickinson's tits in the fabulous Dressed to Kill.

DePalma has a brilliant camp sensibility. Did anyone see Passion? The scene with Rachel McAdams in the bathtub when a man in a leather dog mask comes up to her was deliciously camp.

by Anonymousreply 4407/15/2014

It was on YouTube a few weeks ago (it's been taken down since), and I laughed my ass off at most of it, especially the music video scene.

by Anonymousreply 4507/15/2014

Great movie. De Palma at his campy best. The dreamy score and gorgeous cinematography make it. Loved Melanie's porn actress too.

by Anonymousreply 4607/15/2014

Criag had a music video!!
