"Calculator: How Does Your Food Spending Stack Up?"

Use this calculator from the Mother Jones website to calculate and see how much you spend on food, booze and eating out compared to others in your city and in the nation.

Then think about what you would buy if you only had a dollar or so per meal per day as close to 50 million Americans have, including children, the elderly, severely disabled and many veterans.

We spend between somewhere $75 and $100 billion each year on various forms of food assistance. Then there's charity. And we still have 50,000,000 people living in $1/day for food. Amazing.

Someone should do an audit.

So you're saying that people on entitlement programs get $365.00 a year in aid? See what bullshit your numbers are?

by Anonymousreply 209/22/2013

I spend zero eating out, zero on snacks zero on alcohol. I used $65 a week for my grocery spending. It isn't all food I guess but seems modest to me. I came out nearly at the biggest spender level. Geez, what do you guys eat?

Audit indeed. The hungry poor make the least profit of government programs. Most of us know how Big Agri Business makes billions off the hungry poor and is the reason those on food stamps need junk food to be full and can't afford healthy food, but so many huge companies have their hand in help for the poor. Below is just one example of where tax dollars go instead of going to the needy.

How JP Morgan profits off Food Stamps, BIG, HUGE, DISGUSTING profits.

Very interesting...I spend little eating out but a tad more eating at home.

by Anonymousreply 809/23/2013

I eat it all

by Anonymousreply 909/23/2013

Maybe my calculator is broken because I spend 1360 percent of my income of food and beverage.

by Anonymousreply 1009/23/2013
