"No Down Payment" on Fox Movie Channel these days

Unlike TCM, they show the same movie frequently. This is a great companion to "Strangers When We Meet" - same milieu. Great cast : Barbara Rush, Jeffrey Hunter, Joanne Woodward, Cameron Mitchell, Sheree North (brunette), Tony Randall ( dramatic role, playing an alcoholic womanizer.....really !), Pat Hingle, Patrica Owens ("The Fly"), & directed by Martin Ritt (Hud, Sounder, Norma Rae, Nuts). And shot in Pacific Palisades ( in the poorer, tract house area). Worth it always, just to see Hunter's amazingly handsome face, and a very young Woodward.

It was the inspiration for TV's "Knots Landing"

This was mentioned in "Bad Movies We Love"

Matt Bomer is a dead ringer for the late Jeffrey Hunter!

R2 Did not think it was a bad movie at all - for 1957, it was pretty progressive, showing the downside of a move to 'suburbia', with all the underlying sexual tension with neighbors, alcoholism, religion, and racism. All the actors were actually excellent, with Woodward really a standout.

And Bomer is not a dead ringer for Hunter - they are both extrodinarily handsome men, but not identical in looks, except each has/had blue eyes.

I liked it a lot when caught up with it a year or so ago and have a copy. It never shows here (UK). Hunter and Barbara Rush were already divorced when cast in this, with different partners.

Was this the same year that Joanne won her Oscar for The 3 Faces of Eve? Before The Long Hot Summer?

She was such a unique and interesting young actress but became so deadly dull as she aged.

I think " 3 Faces" was a year later, as was "Long Hot Summer" - which had same director as NDP, the great Martin Ritt.

But why did Joanne get so boring?

by Jerry Waldreply 709/21/2013

She wasn't getting any sex from Paul , and gave up ? It's like he got hotter, as the years went by ( boy sex keeps you young) , and she gave up, and became an old frump.

Yes Barbara, looking at the cast, you, and Joanne, are the only one's left

"She was such a unique and interesting young actress but became so deadly dull as she aged."

She gave some very good performances when she was older. Loved her in Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.
