What has become of her? I've always thought she had the chops to be an A-List actress, and for awhile (2000-2001), she was doing some impressive cutting-edge work (Opposite of Sex, Buffalo 66). Why has she fizzled out after Monster (2006)?
|by Anonymous||reply 70||04/16/2017|
Love her (and her forehead).
|by Anonymous||reply 1||09/16/2013|
She really can't act. I was infatuated with her look and persona around the turn of the millennium, but the more projects I caught her in the more I realized she was not very compelling onscreen. Physically, I still find her striking and still have remnants of a crush on her, so I tried to get through a few eps of PanAm and it was just tedious. I think she's actually gotten worse as an actress.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||09/16/2013|
PanAm was a bad show, but not because of Christina.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||09/16/2013|
She's not a big star and will never become a big star because A list directors, producers and actors don't want to fuck her.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||09/16/2013|
PanAm was a bad show and Ricci did not help matters. I did not mean to imply that she made it bad, just that her bad acting was quite noticeable.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||09/16/2013|
I agree with R2. She was in a lot of good films in the late 90s/early 2000s, but she always comes across very stiff and self-conscious in everything that I've seen her in. She's really not among the best of her generation.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||09/16/2013|
Crazy?? I had a friend who knew her who said so.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||09/16/2013|
Isn't she a midget? Uh. wee person?
|by Anonymous||reply 8||09/16/2013|
She's barely five feet tall. She was chubby early in her career but has lost a lot of weight over the years.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||09/16/2013|
I thought she was hilarious in The Opposite of Sex
|by Anonymous||reply 10||09/16/2013|
She's a strange looking woman.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||09/16/2013|
R10 - She and Lisa Kudrow were amazing in The Opposite of Sex.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||09/16/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 13||09/16/2013|
She was mostly a good child/young adult actor whose schtick doesn't translate well to more mature roles. Still, she was perfect (or perfect enough) in Ice Storm, Opposite of Sex, Mermaids, Addams Family & possibly Buffalo 66.
She looks like she has a really painful eating disorder though. Maybe that sucks up most of her energy. She seems to starve herself so her round head doesn't look so round.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||09/16/2013|
Isn't she a huge stoner? I remember seeing her in that Jon Favreau dinner show and she was so obviously wasted. And she was dating that hugely annoying asshole actor--Adam Goldberg--right?
|by Anonymous||reply 15||09/16/2013|
She pulled a Julia Roberts and got involved with a crew member with a long term girlfriend. I think she's engaged to the guy now. She must like guys who tower over her - all of her boyfriends have been much taller than her.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||09/17/2013|
The worst one-note actress in Hollywood. I'm surprised she continues to get work, paltry as it is.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||09/17/2013|
It's her pie face that has kept her from superstardom, not lack of talent.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||09/17/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 19||09/17/2013|
She was in that weird movie with Samuel L Jackson: Black Snake Mambo. She played a sex-crazed woman that couldn't control her sexuality. So the SLJ character kidnaps her and chains her inside his house and domesticated her.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||09/17/2013|
To Wednesdayish, even today.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||09/17/2013|
She played Elizabeth Wurtzel well.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||09/17/2013|
Just got married.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||10/27/2013|
She looks OK on the Huff Post photo: the fringe bang helps to hide her fivehead.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||10/27/2013|
Didn't I read that she had surgery to reduce them to a more reasonable size?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||10/27/2013|
Even with all the tit work done, she still has a pie face and that doesn't show up well on a camera. Next...
|by Anonymous||reply 26||10/27/2013|
She was pretty awful in Monster.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||10/27/2013|
R25, not sure if she actually had surgery. She lost a lot of weight and that can lead to boob shrinkage.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||10/27/2013|
She was pretty good as the clingy babydyke girlfriend in "Monster", but was outshone by Charlize in every scene they were in together. I remember she had a falling out with the legend-in-his-own-mind Vincent Gallo over something about "Buffalo 66".
She has anew film coming out where she plays a white teacher in Sydney who tried to help wayward Aborigine kids.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||10/27/2013|
R29 - Being outshone by Charlize in the movie made for Charlize is no discredit to Christina's talent.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||10/27/2013|
I wonder if she'd do Dancing with the Stars....
|by Anonymous||reply 31||10/27/2013|
she was good last year on The Good Wife. she played a Chelsea Hander-esque talk show hostess in an episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||10/27/2013|
I know CDAN isn't reliable, but he posted a BI about an actress who was on her way to being A-list that had her career collapse as he confronted her history of abuse.
Many (not all) posters thought it was her.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||10/27/2013|
Aren't both her parents wealthy psychotherapists?
|by Anonymous||reply 34||10/27/2013|
She's developed into quite the fashionista. Her red carpet style is consistently good.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||10/27/2013|
Way to go, R18 !
|by Anonymous||reply 36||10/27/2013|
Her performance in "Monster" is one of the worst ever.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||10/28/2013|
I agree with R37 and other posters about her work in MONSTER. It was shocking how inept she was because she has given some great performances before. I forgot who described her this way but a critic once said that she looked like the love child of Bette Davis and Peter Lorre. I think that's a compliment.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||10/28/2013|
Her dirty pillows are too small
|by Anonymous||reply 39||10/28/2013|
She was fine in "Monster'. The character had to be appealing enough for Aileen to go to the extremes for, and Ricci nailed it.
But she has an offbeat look. Probably as good as whatever director is at the helm.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||10/28/2013|
I disagree, R32, I thought she was awful on TGW. She was in way over her head and I gather she was very unhappy working on that set.
I still think she'd be great as a former Romanian gymnast because that's exactly what she looks like.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||10/28/2013|
Just had a baby
|by Anonymous||reply 42||08/08/2014|
I disliked every character I've seen Christina Ricci play. Ricci has a knack of being annoying to hateful in any role.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||08/09/2014|
Luv'd her in "Pumpkin"!
She did a Chanel campaign in Vogue (B/W photos) decked out from head to toe in classic Chanel, cheek bones and large doe eyes popping. Gorgeous. (Though, I think it was during her eating disorder phase.)
|by Anonymous||reply 44||08/09/2014|
R43 Her likeability is not an issue unless she is playing a lead protagonist. She's only ever had a few big heroine parts, anyhow (only Kat in 'Casper', Trixie in 'Speed Racer' and 'Penelope' spring to mind), so I guess she isn't doing too badly. Someone has got to play those roles, she's got her niche.
She mostly plays antagonistic ladies over the edge, snarky deadpan sidekicks (as 'Prozac'), and hench girls or younger siblings (such as Wednesday).
|by Anonymous||reply 45||08/09/2014|
You're right, r44. The only time I found Ricci likeable was in Pumpkin. In every other role she's annoying.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||08/09/2014|
She was so underrated in Monster.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||08/09/2014|
OMG! I just saw two of her TERRIBLE films on streaming Netflix!
The worst one was PUMPKIN, about a sorority chick who falls in love with a retarded boy after ONE DATE! Her handsome, athletic Ken boyfriend drives off a cliff in one of those "stock footage" type things (with a CASTLE on the side of the road---and this is supposed to be Mulholland Drive in Hollywood. The car BURSTS into flames, careens down a 500 ft cliff, and the next scene has the Ken boyfriend without a scratch in a hospital bed, hair perfectly combed!
The other one was CURSED, about siblings attacked by a werewolf---total fucking rubbish! I recommend you get stoned and watch both of these streaming films
|by Anonymous||reply 48||08/09/2014|
She was so good n The Opposite of Sex and quite good in The Ice Storm.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||08/09/2014|
Nothing wrong with the premise in 'Pumpkin,' R48, in that I fell in love with a 'retarded boy' (albeit a socially retarded one) after one date and ended up marrying him.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||08/09/2014|
R50, He's a bloody fekn retard! A RETARD!
|by Anonymous||reply 51||08/09/2014|
I saw 'Buffalo '66', yesterday. Overrated, but it was amusing in a way...
|by Anonymous||reply 52||04/07/2016|
[quote] She mostly plays antagonistic ladies over the edge, snarky deadpan sidekicks (as 'Prozac'), and henchgirls or younger siblings.
R45 has it, I think.
She recently featured as the damaged superheroine/villain 'Terra'/Tara Markov in the new DCAU movie TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT. This role is all of the aforementioned. Terra is fundamentally a lonely girl, a victim of continual rejection who trusts no-one. After years of trouble integrating into society she develops a nasty temper, a taste for vicious assault, and chronic backstabbing disorder. Terra even resembles Ricci, somewhat; the character is famous for a cherubic, 'cute' appearance (belying her personality) and round facial features.
Terra spies on the Titans who take her in off the street and adopt her as a teammate & kid sister of sorts. She then sells their secrets to a much-older mercantile assassin who she ends up trying to bed and working as a sidekick for. She is legendary among comic-book fans as one of the first truly & deeply cruel, angry, female supervillains, who is dangerous for the sole reason that she doesn't care for others.
Ricci plays her well, and it's great to see a voice-actor so well-matched to the character they voice, for once.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||04/09/2017|
She was great in 2006's Black Snake Moan. I think she's a fine actress, but she might be hitting some age and height-related speed bumps career-wise. I caught her on the Graham Norton show a month or two ago, and was underwhelmed, but I'm a fan of her work and have always found her appealing
|by Anonymous||reply 54||04/09/2017|
No opinions on her Lizzie Borden or Zelda?
|by Anonymous||reply 55||04/09/2017|
NOW & THEN would've been an even better movie if they'd had the guts to make Ricci/O'Donnell's character lesbian as in the original script.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||04/10/2017|
She's dykonic, and should be proud of it.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||04/14/2017|
She is an awful actress. My bar is very low for bad acting, I don't usually notice it, but she stands out for being especially bad. Her career was based on Wednesday Addams and her weird oook.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/14/2017|
She was delightful and excellently cast as Shelley, the aggressively workaholic girlfriend of the titular hero in John Waters' PECKER.
The role is remarkable also as the sole time a female lead cast opposite Edward Furlong ever had truly plausible chemistry with him.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/14/2017|
I have no opinion of her either way - I don't seek out her movies nor do I avoid them. The only CR movie that I've sat through is The Addams Family when it came out. Anyway, I decided to check out "Zelda" on Amazon - not because of Christina but more that I was curious about her character, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the era. She wasn't horrible but she didn't draw me in either. The movie itself was too low key to "grab" me and I bailed about halfway through. Someone must have been impressed though, because I read that the Zelda series will have another season.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||04/14/2017|
Because of her oddball looks she always had oddball roles. If you start out in the Addams Family movies you have to know that your movie roles are going to be limited. She's kind of too weird.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||04/14/2017|
I thought she seemed positively brain damaged in "Pumpkin". It was a disaster in general, though.
The squeaky girly voice doesn't help matters. And any attempts to weep (see "Monster") come across as fake. See Anna Kendrick for a similar problem.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/14/2017|
She's an off brand Winona Ryder. Except Ryder is much prettier and a better actress. As an adult, Ricci has the Ryder weird without the Ryder hot. Had a crush on Ricci when we both were kids, though (I'm a lesbian, a bit younger than her).
|by Anonymous||reply 63||04/14/2017|
The Lawn-Guyland accents of Ricci and Gaby Hoffman were the third-best part of 200 CIGARETTES, behind show-stealing Martha Plimpton and the sublime hot-mess-ness Courtney Love-Cobain.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||04/14/2017|
She was notably, horrifically bad in that horrifically bad final season of Ally McBeal, managing to out-tic even the uber-twitchy Calista Flockhart. And her teeth were fascinatingly ...weird.
That was surprising to me, because I loved her in The Opposite of Sex.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||04/14/2017|
That "200 Cigarettes" clip is a great way to use her. She looks assured there, accent and all (or maybe it gave her something to hide behind). And Gaby was and is always a great actor so maybe that helped.
One of the very rare movies directed by someone who you'd think might be good with actors and maybe was in this case -- a Casting Director.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||04/14/2017|
Gays of every ilk adore Christina.
All she needs are good projects and direction, so true.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/15/2017|
i worked with her a long time ago. Was shocked to find her so tiny. When I saw the film, she looked voluptuous- I've observed the thinner the actress gets, the more successful she becomes (also the hair gets straighter).
She has almost a photographic memory ( I saw her read the script once, and that was it). Drank nothing but Red Bulls all day.

Natasha Lyonne has remarked on the whole straight body/hair expectation to press before, and how deeply ingrained it is:
[quote] Over the next year, Natasha will appear in seven movies. It's a Christina Ricci moment for her, but we don't say that. But because they're in various stages of development, Natasha has time on her hands to enjoy their publicity. "It's the first time in my life that I've had a safety net, career-wise, where I can really fuck with the system," she says. "And I'm definitely going out of my way to see how far I can push things before it's not OK." Two years ago, Natasha made a sarcastic bet with herself that if she could be blonde, skinny, and straight-haired, she would get work. "It was a scam to get work that worked," she says. "And now I'm surrounded by enough movies that I don't have to do anything for anyone. I happen to like my hair like this, all fucked up and just angry." And that's all there is to say about that.
I love this quote in the same interview:
[quote] "Do you know Demi Moore?" I ask. "No," she says. "Do you miss her?" I ask. "Yes," she says.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||04/16/2017|
R29, I seem to remember an old interview with Ricci in SPIN magazine circa 1998 / 1999 when she was bordering on chunky and had massive breasts (the photo shoot didn't do her many favours). On the set of "Buffalo 66," she was sexually harassed, particularly by Ben Gazzara, who apparently came up to her and proceeded to motorboat her in front of the crew. I believe she complained about this, but Vincent Gallo being the pretentious pig he is, I believe he found this as being needless whining.
She also admitted to eating disorders in that interview, and how she'd go to sleep with her fist clenched against her stomach so she could hear it growling, and feeling proud of herself for not eating that day.
