Teen Helicopter Enthusiast Slices Own Head With Toy Chopper, Dies

You are invited to write the next line in the opening paragraph of this current news story:

'A 19-year-old man playing with a remote control helicopter in Brooklyn lost control of it while trying to perform a trick, sliced off the top of his own head and died Thursday afternoon, law enforcement officials said.'

by YellowJournalistreply 12009/10/2013

And the Darwin Award goes to.....

by YellowJournalistreply 209/06/2013

Songs on his iPod:

Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly

by YellowJournalistreply 309/06/2013

"Just a little off the top, please."

by YellowJournalistreply 409/06/2013

The helicopter was caught and put down by authorities.

by YellowJournalistreply 509/06/2013

It is thought that the operator of the model helicopter was texting at the moment of the crash.

by YellowJournalistreply 609/06/2013

Have police confirmed the whereabouts of John Landis?

by YellowJournalistreply 709/06/2013

LOL R4 and R5.

by YellowJournalistreply 809/06/2013

The helicopter was part of a fleet of helicopters owned by Asiana Airlines.

by YellowJournalistreply 909/06/2013

What a fool!

by YellowJournalistreply 1009/06/2013

Now John McCain will want to invade Brooklyn

by YellowJournalistreply 1109/06/2013

The rogue helicopter was later seen buzzing a local nursing home and terrorizing its residents.

by YellowJournalistreply 1209/06/2013

It is thought that the errant helicopter may have been a participant in the drug-fueled sex party, "Electric Zoo", on Randall's Island this weekend.

by YellowJournalistreply 1309/06/2013

In other news, an updated version of the popular Droid application, Angry Birds, has been delayed for unknown reasons.

by YellowJournalistreply 1409/06/2013

Like something out of Twilight Zone.

by YellowJournalistreply 1509/06/2013

Not really relevant, but why do they refer to this as a 'sport' in that news coverage ???

by YellowJournalistreply 1609/06/2013

Here's Channel 4's dramatic reenactment of what happened:

by YellowJournalistreply 1709/06/2013

Like NASCAR, it is a "sport" for fat people.

by YellowJournalistreply 1809/06/2013

[quote]You are invited to write the next line in the opening paragraph of this current news story

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything.

by YellowJournalistreply 1909/06/2013

No, R11.

Sen. McCain, chuckling: "I've finally found a pilot worse than me! "

by YellowJournalistreply 2009/06/2013

It's not unusual for teens to lose their head over their hobbies.

by YellowJournalistreply 2109/06/2013

Doesn't it make you look forward to the new television channels that will need to be created just to cover the news over what's going to happen when drones are flying around in profusion?

by YellowJournalistreply 2209/06/2013

Those little toy helicopters can do that much damage?

by YellowJournalistreply 2309/06/2013

It was far more than a toy. Apparently the blades are made of carbon fibre and were 5' in length and spun at speeds at up to 2300 RPM. It's amazing this doesn't happen more often.

Toy helicopters are one thing but what he was using should be banned from public parks and limited to organized events where bystanders can be kept a safe distance away.

by YellowJournalistreply 2409/06/2013

I assure you, he did not feel any pain.

by YellowJournalistreply 2509/06/2013

That really was a Hattori Hanzo helicopter...

by YellowJournalistreply 2609/06/2013

He was kind of cute, but he looked way older than his age (19). Bad genes, I guess.

by YellowJournalistreply 2709/06/2013

R23, read the article, I wouldn't call it a toy, toys can't slice someone's skull open. It was 4ft long and had a fast spinning 5ft blade. I'm surprised more such accidents haven't occurred, if it can slice through skull bone, it could cut off any body part. It must be one of the few times someone ended up dead. Sounds like they need to be regulated more, before an innocent bystander gets killed or mutilated.

by YellowJournalistreply 2809/06/2013

One report said that he was constantly flying the helicopter close to him and then turning it away what a farkin' idjit. Good thing he only killed himself .

by YellowJournalistreply 2909/06/2013

Here he is

by YellowJournalistreply 3009/06/2013

Oh Mary, take up scrapbooking, it's neater AND safer.

by YellowJournalistreply 3109/06/2013

Madge, I LOVE your new candy dish!

by YellowJournalistreply 3309/06/2013

Look at the bright side. He doesn't have to watch any more Bravo produced television.

by YellowJournalistreply 3409/06/2013

I can't believe the laughs. I found this story incredibly sad and grisly.

by YellowJournalistreply 3509/06/2013

Yes, R32, skull candy dishes are SO HOT right now!

by YellowJournalistreply 3609/06/2013

I was performing a fairly elementary Polish trick when...

by YellowJournalistreply 3809/06/2013

A small quadcopter like the AR Parrot drone can actually do more (including live video feed to an iPad or Android tablet), and fly as far. The difference is that quadcopters probably can't kill the user or innocent bystanders.

R30's video shows why the guy was Darwin Award material.

by YellowJournalistreply 3909/06/2013

Helicopters don't kill people, people kill ....eh never mind

by YellowJournalistreply 4009/06/2013

Think we could get one of these into the next Republican National Convention?

by YellowJournalistreply 4109/06/2013

Or the next Country Music Awards, same difference.

by YellowJournalistreply 4209/06/2013

You all are FUCKED UP. R33 sounds like a fucking psychopath.

Pointless bitchery is one thing, but many of you are sick. Seriously.

A young man is dead, his father watched it happen. I'm disgusted to be on the same planet as the lot of you, aside from R35.

by YellowJournalistreply 4309/06/2013

This happened in front of his father.

by YellowJournalistreply 4409/06/2013

I was about to post that, R44. Can you imagine?

by YellowJournalistreply 4509/06/2013

R33 is Brandon. ASSHOLE.

by YellowJournalistreply 4609/06/2013

Look on the bright side: They can bury him in a child sized coffin now.

by YellowJournalistreply 4709/06/2013

If only the bystanders had been armed with assault rifles, they could have prevented this tragedy!

by YellowJournalistreply 4809/06/2013

You want to see a sick fuck?

Trolldar R47 and watch the board light up.

Get help.

by YellowJournalistreply 4909/06/2013

R4, R5, R6, R9, R10 R12, R13, R14, R36 and R47.

Same sad, pathetic asshole.

by YellowJournalistreply 5009/06/2013

For R43:

by YellowJournalistreply 5109/06/2013

That's right R50! Stick around, there's more coming!

by YellowJournalistreply 5209/06/2013

Sincere question for the likes of R1, R35, and R43: why are you here?

Seriously, what do you get out of being on this website that you can't get elsewhere?

Because whatever you think you get here, you would clearly be happier somewhere else.

Because you know what? This thread is where DataLounge TRULY shines: black humor and snark about dead people.

Because true DLers love these threads! Whether it's our ubiquitous "what's on the dead person's ipod" threads, telling a teen RC heli enthusiast to not lose his head, joking that a toilet tank baby really dodged a bullet, or yet another thread about charred cheerleaders (hey, where's this year's batch? Did the Filipino bridal party take its place?), these threads are one of the best things about this website.

If you don't like it, LEAVE!

by YellowJournalistreply 5309/06/2013

Go away, R50.

DL loves you, R47.

by YellowJournalistreply 5409/06/2013

Thank you R53. I couldn't have said it better myself.

by YellowJournalistreply 5509/06/2013

[quote]black humor and snark about dead people.

You can have it. And it's one of the reasons I have to take a break from this place from time to time. It's not funny, it's not clever - it's disturbing.

It's sick. And no, ALL of DL does not love it.

by YellowJournalistreply 5609/06/2013

[all posts by right wing shit-stain # a removed.]

by YellowJournalistreply 5709/06/2013

I'm not any of the posters you mentioned, but I'm disgusted as well.

Why am I here? Because thankfully, there is more to this site than jokes about dead people and tragic accidents. I agree with the poster upthread, some of you really need to get help.

by YellowJournalistreply 5809/06/2013

This thread is full of psychopaths.

by YellowJournalistreply 5909/06/2013

If R56 would rather post on Madonna threads, he is welcome to do so.

by YellowJournalistreply 6009/06/2013

[quote]perversely absurd?

Big difference between perversely absurd and disturbingly fucked up. If this kind of thing is merely "perversely absurd" to you, you really should seek therapy.

by YellowJournalistreply 6109/06/2013

[quote]would rather post on Madonna threads

Right, because that's all there is to DL - Death threads and Madonna threads. Wow. You're disturbing, juvenile AND stupid.

by YellowJournalistreply 6209/06/2013

"Here he is!"

"No, over here he is!"

"Hey, over here he is!"

by YellowJournalistreply 6309/06/2013

R61, how is this any different than the 300 thead count of the Asiana plane going down last month?

by YellowJournalistreply 6409/06/2013

R23, the propeller span on these remote controlled helicopters are 4 feet to 4.5 feet and they go 60 miles per hour.

It is being sliced by very fast powerful knives.

They are not 'toys'.

There's a youtube video of these helicopters and they make tremendous noise, spew fumes, go extremely high, extremely fast, are very powerful, and difficult to control when making them do unorthodox crazy tricks in the sky.

by YellowJournalistreply 6509/06/2013

Yumm.

by YellowJournalistreply 7109/06/2013

Why so serious, R72?

by YellowJournalistreply 7309/06/2013

Paging the Sanka Lady!

Table R72 needs a big cup of that calming and refreshing coffee you've been talking about! Real bad.

by YellowJournalistreply 7409/06/2013

LOL, R73.

[quote]Some may have had trauma as children but most are just tools of satan.

by YellowJournalistreply 7609/06/2013

It was reported that the toy helicopter was manufactured by Apache Industries.

by YellowJournalistreply 7709/06/2013

Actually, R72, you sound pretty psychopathic yourself, gleefully rubbing your hands together in anticipation of DLers getting sick and dying.

I think maybe you ought to spend a little time thinking about whether you actually do believe in karma, because if you do... well, figure it out.

As for R56, if the death threads about total strangers (whom it's actually more psychologically unhealthy to grieve over or build teddy bear towers) and NOT the rampant racism and homophobia are what lead you to need a break from this site periodically, I think DL is probably well rid of you.

by YellowJournalistreply 7809/06/2013

Just a wild guess, but I bet the delicate flowers that can't handle a little black humour are the same righteous souls who call bathhouses AIDS-infested sleaze pits, and scream PEDO whenever someone posts a pic of Justin Bieber.

by YellowJournalistreply 8009/06/2013

R72, please take up model helicopter flying, and only go out with a camera on you. Please.

The noxious cuntery of being too stupid, concrete and literal not to understand the place, history and appropriateness of such humor in this context, PLUS the shameful presumption of assuming superior moral ground in effectively calling for wicked judgment on satirists and absurdists, make you just about the worst and dumbest human being here. You and your fellow worrisome twats.

Are you posting such outrage when it comes to issues that really matter? No, of course not. Because you are a foolish and ignorant cunt lost in a place you cannot understand. Because you lack the humanity to do it.

by YellowJournalistreply 8109/06/2013

Madge: Why, thank you, Myrna. I love my new candy dish, too. And do you know, I just found it in my yard. It needed some cleaning up from some raspberry and marshmallow stuff (I guess) left in it, but Brillo and Ajax can do anything.

Myrna: Is it bone china?

Madge: Bone, yes. But I think Caucasian.

by YellowJournalistreply 8209/06/2013

I strongly agree with R72. well said, R72

And R81 is a fool

by YellowJournalistreply 8309/06/2013

Hopeless.

by YellowJournalistreply 9009/06/2013

I saw the whole thing. It was disgusting! It looked like he was being attacked by a flying Cuisinart!

by YellowJournalistreply 9109/07/2013

These helicopters should not be called 'toys'.

They are hobby helicopters, not toys.

They are extremely far from being toys.

by YellowJournalistreply 9209/07/2013

Did the helicopter film the attack?

by YellowJournalistreply 9309/07/2013

R90 couldn't write a joke if his life depended on it.

I love the Madge jokes!

by YellowJournalistreply 9409/07/2013

LOL@R91 and Roseanne!

by YellowJournalistreply 9509/07/2013

Yeah! That's right! What R81 said!

Phhhhhhtt! On you!

by YellowJournalistreply 9609/07/2013

[quote]Did the helicopter film the attack?

Given the GoPro recorded clips the victim liked to post on YouTube, could be.

One thing I learned in the RC airplane hobby as a kid: the remote controls are subject to interference, especially if other RC craft are flying nearby. That's the real stupidity of maneuvers which could bring a craft into contact with people (as in R30's clip.) A bit of crosstalk at the wrong time and it's a quick, messy end.

BTW, a little dark humor around a subject like this is perfectly healthy. This thread's delicate flower trolls need to go on a ride-along with their neighborhood EMT's. Coping is laughing, sometimes.

by YellowJournalistreply 9709/07/2013

I just had a brilliant new idea for the beginning of a horror or murder mystery film. Brilliant because it has never been done yet.

Toy helicopter lifts from the black tarmac of a 5th floor NYC walk-up. Buzz and smoke galore. The smoke parts and the copter takes a beeline down and up the avenue.

A red raincoat in the distance stands out in the crowd. The raincoat reaches for one from a stack of newspapers at the stand. The tabloid headline reads: Serial Killer Kills 4th Victim!

The copter zeroes in on the kill, its engine volume increases. The raincoat swirls around in terror and faces the sweeping camera. Blood splashes across the stack of papers.

by YellowJournalistreply 9809/07/2013

The newspapers are irreverently referring to the boy now as "the chop vic", which I guess could be taken one of two ways. I'm serious.

by YellowJournalistreply 9909/07/2013

I feel his pain.

Acutely.

by YellowJournalistreply 10009/07/2013

Tell me about it, Jayne!

by YellowJournalistreply 10109/07/2013

He was performing flying tricks when he suddenly lost his train of thought.

by YellowJournalistreply 10209/07/2013

[quote] go to youtube.com and type in remote controlled hobby helicopters

Or, you could just click on R30's link in this thread.

Reading the whole thread saves time.

by YellowJournalistreply 10309/07/2013

Anything on rotten.com yet?

by YellowJournalistreply 10409/07/2013

R99's chop vic link to the NY Post also has video of these idiotic playthings. They are totally obnoxious, gas-spewing noise machines that even cats who watch car racing on tv wouldn't find interesting. They truly appeal to a very low model on the social and intellectual scale.

I've looked at the videos of his helicopter and I can understand that the blade could kill him by cutting through soft tissue -- hitting the carotid artery or jugular vein. But they don't look powerful enough to slice the top of his head and part of his shoulder off.

by YellowJournalistreply 10709/07/2013

It made the BBC news. His father should be proud that his son's death resulted in international headlines.

Remember the kid who stuck his head out the emergency exit of the bus taking him and his friends to an underage drinking party? I guess chop vic is this year's overpass head.

by YellowJournalistreply 10809/07/2013

All of the gun enthusiasts are crawling out if the woodwork posting "satirical" remarks calling for a ban on helicopters and licensing and registration of toy aircraft all over the Internet. Ha ha. Aren't they just high-larious?
