Madrid was quickly pulling away as the favorite to host the Olympic Games over candidate cities Istanbul and Tokyo.

The US would be a runaway favorite even ahead of Madrid if the USOC had bothered to support a bid city like Chicago, San Francisco or New York. Instead, the USOC is aiming for 2024 where it faces long shot odds against bids from Dubai and possibly even South Africa.

Japan's nuclear meltdown continues to demonstrate that they can't handle an emergency. Civil unrest in Istanbul indicates they're not ready to host the Olympics when a coup or civil war is likely prior to 2020.
