Was John Wayne gay?

For some reason there is a lot of stuff on the internet about his being the ultimate closet case. He was buds with Rock Hudson. He didn't get along with Montgomery Clift. The rumors about John Ford, his buddy, are now out there.

by Anonymousreply 109June 9, 2016 1:43 AM

Yes, I have it on good authority...

by Anonymousreply 1August 26, 2013 3:57 AM

I have no idea, but I'm always happy to pass the rumors along.

Just because the evil old bastard would have hated the rumors so much.

by Anonymousreply 2August 26, 2013 3:59 AM

Well, don't you want to know?

by Anonymousreply 3August 26, 2013 3:59 AM

Yes, dish!

by Anonymousreply 4August 26, 2013 4:03 AM

He REALLY like fried sausage; I mean, in the wrapper? Loved to suckle till it burst...and he always made it special, anytime Chaplin was around...if you catch my drift ;)

by Anonymousreply 5August 26, 2013 4:06 AM

Here she is in hot pants and carrying a handbag.

by Anonymousreply 6August 26, 2013 4:08 AM

No, not really. "Fried sausage?" What the hell is that? "Wrapper" means uncut cock? Did he have a thing with Charlie Chaplin? Was Chaplin uncut? Just get to the point.

by Anonymousreply 7August 26, 2013 4:09 AM

R7, I don't like to tell tales at school; but...fried=mexican, yes. He might have ;) and maybe Carol Burnett too, so I think he's bi.

by Anonymousreply 8August 26, 2013 4:13 AM

We're from the same hometown! I don't know what possessed him to kill all those young men and bury them under his house, but I'm sure he couldn't have been a homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 9August 26, 2013 4:16 AM

John Wayne Gay?

by Anonymousreply 10August 26, 2013 4:16 AM

Hehe, Prince!

by Anonymousreply 11August 26, 2013 4:18 AM

plus Barbra presented his Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 12August 26, 2013 4:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 13August 26, 2013 4:44 AM

OP, you know damn well that every single man on Earth is gay and a friend of Dorothy. Why do you come here and waste band-width on this already resolved issue?

by Anonymousreply 14August 26, 2013 4:52 AM

He wanted to present his hole at the Oscars one year.

by Anonymousreply 15August 26, 2013 5:02 AM

The epitome of bi.

by Anonymousreply 16August 26, 2013 5:15 AM

Like many actors of his day, he used his body to get work in the film indusry.

by Anonymousreply 17August 26, 2013 12:34 PM

Frau Alert at r13!!

by Anonymousreply 18August 26, 2013 12:39 PM

R6- talk about VPL....lol! He definitely had great legs. Wow! I never knew John Wayne was hot! hot!

by Anonymousreply 19August 26, 2013 12:49 PM

[quote] He didn't get along with Montgomery Clift.

From what I have read, very few people got along with Clift, especially male actors. He was often seen as pretentious and sort of stuck up. His good looks and superior skills as an actor probably intimidated a lot of the old school gang.

by Anonymousreply 20August 26, 2013 12:55 PM

When John Wayne first came to Hollywood as Marion Morrison, like many other young male actors, he started out modeling, mostly fitness / physique shots. Rumors say that he caught the eye of a studio executive who had the idea to turn him into a western star and who bought up all of the modeling pictures including any nudes.

by Anonymousreply 21August 26, 2013 6:23 PM

Thanks for that input R21.

by Anonymousreply 22August 26, 2013 6:41 PM

Oh sure, he and Ronald Reagan were lovers.

by Anonymousreply 23August 26, 2013 7:18 PM

He's wearing Espadrilles in that photo too! He's a big ole queer!

by Anonymousreply 24August 26, 2013 9:45 PM

[quote]Rumors say that he caught the eye of a studio executive who had the idea to turn him into a western star and who bought up all of the modeling pictures including any nudes.

It was Raoul Walsh. Wayne dropped out of college after losing his football scholarship (due to injury) and went to work as a prop boy at Fox. Walsh spotted him moving furniture (think hot, sweaty, probably shirtless) and *Bang* Wayne had a starring role in Walsh's next picture, The Big Trail.

Here's a photo of Wayne in Big Trail. You ponder what Walsh saw and draw your own conclusions:

by Anonymousreply 28August 27, 2013 11:19 PM

What does Maureen O'Hara say?

by Anonymousreply 29August 27, 2013 11:42 PM

He had big man hands and a soft, feminine face when he was young. Beautiful hair and beautiful eyes.

He's a long way from TRUE GRIT in those shots.

by Anonymousreply 30August 27, 2013 11:50 PM

That would be funny if he was. All of my straight, conservative religious acquaintances worship the ground he walked on.

by Anonymousreply 31August 27, 2013 11:54 PM

What happened to him? He was handsome then.

by Anonymousreply 32August 27, 2013 11:54 PM

[quote]He's a long way from TRUE GRIT in those shots.

And a few thousand more cigarettes.

by Anonymousreply 33August 28, 2013 12:00 AM

It's hard to believe John Wayne was ever good-looking, because by the time he hit it big, his youthful beauty had faded and he looked like a big block of hung-over wood.

But his ugly, ordinary face actually worked for him as his career went on and on, because he played the kind of Alpha Male who didn't give a flying fuck about his looks. (Or his tiny wiener.)

by Anonymousreply 34August 28, 2013 12:35 AM

His drag name was Marion Morrison!

by Anonymousreply 35August 28, 2013 1:08 AM

Bill balls. Tiny cock. Old story in Hollywood that has been out there for years. Did not like to bottom but did it when it helped his career (in the mid to late 30's). In fairness, not that bad an actor when you put his roles in context--and his performance in "True Grit" is wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 36August 28, 2013 1:23 AM

Oh for God's sake, John Wayne was NOT gay. I guess some gays would love him to be. He was the Hollywood personification of manliness and conservatism; wouldn't it be delicious and ironic if in fact he was a closet queen who loved cock! Well, he wasn't.

Some trivia: he was a member of the football team Clara Bow supposedly fucked.

by Anonymousreply 37August 28, 2013 1:33 AM

R37, nice try.

by Anonymousreply 38August 28, 2013 1:44 AM

You've seen "The Birdcage," right?

by Anonymousreply 39August 28, 2013 1:54 AM

interesting post, r36. does anyone know if Charlton Heston engaged in gay sex for fun or career advancement? John Wayne, beautiful Burt Lancaster, Kurt Douglas, Marlon Brando and Heston gave off gay/bi vibes in tv interviews and their films imho.

by Anonymousreply 40August 28, 2013 2:23 AM

That is completely ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 41August 28, 2013 2:28 AM

Of course not. What a ridiculous claim.

by Anonymousreply 42August 28, 2013 2:29 AM

John Wayne, Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood dabbled in the homosex.

by Anonymousreply 43August 28, 2013 2:34 AM

Whoever posted this thinks that there is no such thing as a straight man. It's bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 44August 28, 2013 2:35 AM

His brother who lived in NYC was. He sewed and collected dolls.

by Anonymousreply 45August 28, 2013 2:48 AM

He obviously wasn't gay. No intelligent person would believe that.

by Anonymousreply 46August 28, 2013 3:01 AM

Sorry, that info may be incorrect. I believe it is one of his sons, who lives in NYC is gay, is amazing at sewing, and collects dolls.

by Anonymousreply 47August 28, 2013 3:02 AM

R46, the same could be said for Rock Hudson. They had similar personalities. Strong, masculine, imposing. It's just that you KNOW about Rock.

by Anonymousreply 48August 28, 2013 3:23 AM

"John Wayne, beautiful Burt Lancaster, Kurt Douglas, Marlon Brando and Heston gave off gay/bi vibes in tv interviews and their films imho."

Brando and Lancaster were both bisexual, I even heard a rumor that they had an affair.

Never heard a whisper about Heston, but then Heston was so dumb that he never realized "Ben Hur" had gay subtext. If he had been gay or bi, he was such a close-minded idiot that he might never figure it out.

by Anonymousreply 49August 28, 2013 3:39 AM

Was it John Wayne or Clark Gable who fired a director because he knew about his gay past? Probably both. I've heard rumors about both. They may not have been totally gay, but certainly bi when the situation called for it.

by Anonymousreply 50August 28, 2013 3:43 AM

Gable supposedly had George Cukor replaced with Victor Fleming as the director of Gone With the Wind because Cukor knew of Gable's casting couch climb.

Some sections of GWTW supposedly stand as having been directed by Cukor.

by Anonymousreply 51August 28, 2013 4:34 AM

Didn't he have sex with those boys he picked up in his clown suit before he killed them? That makes him gay, right?

by Anonymousreply 52August 28, 2013 4:46 AM

I heard he was such a flamboyant queen that the only way he could tone it down was develop that slow, deliberate way of speaking.

by Anonymousreply 53August 28, 2013 5:30 AM

This is the stupidest thread I've ever seen on this website.

by Anonymousreply 54August 30, 2013 1:59 AM

[R52] That was John Wayne Gacy. If your posting was a joke, it wasn't funny, if it was a serious question, it wasn't intelligent.

by Anonymousreply 55August 30, 2013 2:24 AM

Only a dumb-ass would ask such a thing.

by Anonymousreply 56August 30, 2013 2:24 AM

"This is the stupidest thread I've ever seen on this website."

Oh -- there have been threads that have been more stupid. Expotentially more stupid...

by Anonymousreply 57August 30, 2013 2:32 AM

41,42,44, get OFF the gay gossip site, breeders.

by Anonymousreply 58August 30, 2013 2:35 AM

He always got me as a bisexual type. No doubt his Kinsey scale was near the center.

by Anonymousreply 59August 30, 2013 2:40 AM

Marion Morrison was a college football player when he was "discovered" by Hollywood. The whole "John Wayne" persona was fake. He ended up believing his own PR, as he got older, but the young Morrison was hardly some cowboy. He had wavy hair, and clearly knew he was good looking. ALL celebrities in those days bartered for parts with their parts. Even Clark Gable, who was the straightest of straight, let George Cukor blow him at the beginning of his career. That's the way it was. So whether they were straight, bi, or gay, they played the game.

by Anonymousreply 60August 30, 2013 2:44 AM

Nope, could NOT have had homosex in his younger years. No way, no how. See pic.

by Anonymousreply 61August 30, 2013 2:45 AM

Nothing gay here at all. Incredibly straight!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62August 30, 2013 2:47 AM

Oh young Marion Morrison. His nickname was "little duke" because he never went anywhere without his beloved Airedale terrier.

His football career ended when he hurt himself bodysurfing.

He was "discovered" by silent film star Tom Mix, while hanging around the movie studios.

In 1930, director Raoul Walsh saw him moving some studio props around, and decided "little duke" was perfect to star in his film. (This was, presumably, apres blowjob). Then he went from picture to picture until he landed the job in Stagecoach.

The macho cowboy act was completely fake. He was a pharmacist's kid, upper middle class, and he was in a Freemason youth group.

by Anonymousreply 63August 30, 2013 3:00 AM

This is Tom Mix.

by Anonymousreply 67April 11, 2014 5:34 PM

What I've read about John Wayne is that he had a thing for dark haired (female) beauties, many of whom were of Latin extraction.

Patricia Neal had noted that Wayne seemed to deliberately pick on men who by appearances came off as gay.

by Anonymousreply 68April 14, 2014 12:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 75October 26, 2014 8:47 PM

I'll tell ya one thing, he was NO Johnny Mack Brown!

by Anonymousreply 76October 26, 2014 8:49 PM

John Wayne is the one who knew for certain, and he isn't talking. Really, it is anyone's guess at this point.

But, to deny he could not have been gay or bi because he projected a masculine persona is foolish.

The post above that claims he didn't like or harassed gay men is interesting. If true, just remember those who yell names the loudest or most often end up being the gayest. Just reminding you.

by Anonymousreply 77October 26, 2014 9:01 PM

John Ford may have had feelings for the Duke, but they were not reciprocated beyond professional admiration.

Any examples of closeted gay men with similarly uber-musculine personas?

by Anonymousreply 79October 26, 2014 9:07 PM

I have heard and read the opposite about Clift and Wayne. I heard that they got along, and that Wayne liked Clift because he was a good actor.

by Anonymousreply 80October 26, 2014 9:09 PM

R77 Oh right, because homophobes really are often closet cases.

by Anonymousreply 81October 26, 2014 9:47 PM

79, get out of the house more often.

Go to any gay event.

Go to leather bdsm runs for some real good examples.

r81, in my experience they sure are, at least the loudest, meanest ones.

by Anonymousreply 83October 26, 2014 10:05 PM

r79/r81 is surely a flyover frau or fundie.

by Anonymousreply 84October 26, 2014 10:06 PM

R82 I meant out of famous people.

by Anonymousreply 85October 26, 2014 10:10 PM

Guys who get their pussy and like it don't usually have a big issue with gay men. They're satiated, they're mellow and they don't really care.

by Anonymousreply 86October 26, 2014 10:11 PM

You can be in drag in many ways. For some guys it's the über-masculinity.

Speaking of Marlene, didn't she desperately try to bed Wayne on their first film but he wouldn't give in?

Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 88October 26, 2014 11:58 PM

Wayne was big and imposing, but that walk and that voice don't particularly scream uber-masculine.

And I couldn't say one way or the other whether he was gay or not.

by Anonymousreply 89October 27, 2014 12:38 AM

No he wasn't very masculine and maybe that's why he tried to overcompensate to keep true to his tough-guy image.

by Anonymousreply 94October 27, 2014 2:35 PM

I'm totally surprised that nobody has mentioned Darwin Porter's "Hollywood Babylon - It's Back" and the long. long story about John Wayne offing Nick Adams because Nick threatened to go public on their affair.

by Anonymousreply 95October 27, 2014 2:48 PM

George Burns: John Wayne runs with the bulls, you gotta be tough to run with the bulls.

Gracie Allen: Oh I don't know, my grandmother had a cow and he wasn't so tough.

by Anonymousreply 98October 27, 2014 8:43 PM

Get Wayne out of the saddle, and you've got problems.

by Anonymousreply 99October 28, 2014 1:28 AM

One of the few things I've learned here is that all movie stars are gay. All of them. Every single one of them. ESPECIALLY the married ones.

The other thing I've learned is that the gays aren't very bright. Gullible.

by Anonymousreply 100October 28, 2014 1:31 AM

NO idea but he would hate those rumors.

by Anonymousreply 101October 28, 2014 1:36 AM

Who taught you this, r100? As I have posted before, in the early 50's there were three exclusively straight big male stars...

by Anonymousreply 102October 28, 2014 2:02 AM

John Wayne! Are you gonna tell me he's a fag?!

by Anonymousreply 103October 29, 2014 5:43 PM

NEWSFLASH! There are indeed "straight-acting", macho men who are gay! Now, if John Wayne was or not, I don't know. ONly he could tell you that, and he is dead, so we will never know for sure.

Someone once told me when I first came out that I would see that there are MORE men who are attracted to men who are married and have families than those who are openly gay. I found this to be true. Time and space don't permit me to go into this right now, but yes, I did indeed find that to be true. I believe sexuality is on a continuum between gay and straight.

As for the haters, YES! the more openly hateful they are the more they turn out to be gay. Absolutely. The louder they yell F*&, the more they turn out to be gay.

A visit to any cruising ground late at night (remember them?) is/was always interesting. Amazing who turns out to be there! I am guessing today they cruise on-line.

by Anonymousreply 106October 31, 2014 11:48 AM

Gay, straight, bisexual, whatever.

The real question should rather be: Is/was so-and-so ambitious enough to use the casting couch (aka. sexual favors) to further his career?

Some people are still so hung up about sex and sexual identity that they can't wrap their heads around the idea of career driven / ambitious people doing whatever it takes to reach their ambitious goals.

by Anonymousreply 107October 31, 2014 11:50 AM
