For some reason there is a lot of stuff on the internet about his being the ultimate closet case. He was buds with Rock Hudson. He didn't get along with Montgomery Clift. The rumors about John Ford, his buddy, are now out there.
Was John Wayne gay?
|by Anonymous||reply 108||10/31/2014|
I have no idea, but I'm always happy to pass the rumors along.
Just because the evil old bastard would have hated the rumors so much.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||08/25/2013|
Well, don't you want to know?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||08/25/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 4||08/26/2013|
He REALLY like fried sausage; I mean, in the wrapper? Loved to suckle till it burst...and he always made it special, anytime Chaplin was around...if you catch my drift ;)
|by Anonymous||reply 5||08/26/2013|
We're from the same hometown! I don't know what possessed him to kill all those young men and bury them under his house, but I'm sure he couldn't have been a homosexual.

plus Barbra presented his Oscar.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||08/26/2013|
OP, you know damn well that every single man on Earth is gay and a friend of Dorothy. Why do you come here and waste band-width on this already resolved issue?
|by Anonymous||reply 14||08/26/2013|
He wanted to present his hole at the Oscars one year.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||08/26/2013|
The epitome of bi.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||08/26/2013|
Like many actors of his day, he used his body to get work in the film indusry.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||08/26/2013|
R6- talk about VPL....lol! He definitely had great legs. Wow! I never knew John Wayne was hot! hot!
|by Anonymous||reply 19||08/26/2013|
[quote] He didn't get along with Montgomery Clift.
From what I have read, very few people got along with Clift, especially male actors. He was often seen as pretentious and sort of stuck up. His good looks and superior skills as an actor probably intimidated a lot of the old school gang.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||08/26/2013|
When John Wayne first came to Hollywood as Marion Morrison, like many other young male actors, he started out modeling, mostly fitness / physique shots. Rumors say that he caught the eye of a studio executive who had the idea to turn him into a western star and who bought up all of the modeling pictures including any nudes.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||08/26/2013|
Thanks for that input R21.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||08/26/2013|
Oh sure, he and Ronald Reagan were lovers.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||08/26/2013|
He's wearing Espadrilles in that photo too! He's a big ole queer!
|by Anonymous||reply 24||08/26/2013|
[quote]Rumors say that he caught the eye of a studio executive who had the idea to turn him into a western star and who bought up all of the modeling pictures including any nudes.
It was Raoul Walsh. Wayne dropped out of college after losing his football scholarship (due to injury) and went to work as a prop boy at Fox. Walsh spotted him moving furniture (think hot, sweaty, probably shirtless) and *Bang* Wayne had a starring role in Walsh's next picture, The Big Trail.
Here's a photo of Wayne in Big Trail. You ponder what Walsh saw and draw your own conclusions:

Another photo of young John Wayne:

Great photo at R25.

Gayer than a tree full of rainbow lorikeets on Hugh Jackman's verandah.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||08/27/2013|
What does Maureen O'Hara say?
|by Anonymous||reply 29||08/27/2013|
He had big man hands and a soft, feminine face when he was young. Beautiful hair and beautiful eyes.
He's a long way from TRUE GRIT in those shots.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||08/27/2013|
That would be funny if he was. All of my straight, conservative religious acquaintances worship the ground he walked on.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||08/27/2013|
What happened to him? He was handsome then.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||08/27/2013|
[quote]He's a long way from TRUE GRIT in those shots.
And a few thousand more cigarettes.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||08/27/2013|
It's hard to believe John Wayne was ever good-looking, because by the time he hit it big, his youthful beauty had faded and he looked like a big block of hung-over wood.
But his ugly, ordinary face actually worked for him as his career went on and on, because he played the kind of Alpha Male who didn't give a flying fuck about his looks. (Or his tiny wiener.)
|by Anonymous||reply 34||08/27/2013|
His drag name was Marion Morrison!
|by Anonymous||reply 35||08/27/2013|
Bill balls. Tiny cock. Old story in Hollywood that has been out there for years. Did not like to bottom but did it when it helped his career (in the mid to late 30's). In fairness, not that bad an actor when you put his roles in context--and his performance in "True Grit" is wonderful.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||08/27/2013|
R37, nice try.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||08/27/2013|
You've seen "The Birdcage," right?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||08/27/2013|
interesting post, r36. does anyone know if Charlton Heston engaged in gay sex for fun or career advancement? John Wayne, beautiful Burt Lancaster, Kurt Douglas, Marlon Brando and Heston gave off gay/bi vibes in tv interviews and their films imho.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||08/27/2013|
John Wayne, Ronald Reagan and Clint Eastwood dabbled in the homosex.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||08/27/2013|
His brother who lived in NYC was. He sewed and collected dolls.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||08/27/2013|
Sorry, that info may be incorrect. I believe it is one of his sons, who lives in NYC is gay, is amazing at sewing, and collects dolls.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||08/27/2013|
R46, the same could be said for Rock Hudson. They had similar personalities. Strong, masculine, imposing. It's just that you KNOW about Rock.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||08/27/2013|
"John Wayne, beautiful Burt Lancaster, Kurt Douglas, Marlon Brando and Heston gave off gay/bi vibes in tv interviews and their films imho."
Brando and Lancaster were both bisexual, I even heard a rumor that they had an affair.
Never heard a whisper about Heston, but then Heston was so dumb that he never realized "Ben Hur" had gay subtext. If he had been gay or bi, he was such a close-minded idiot that he might never figure it out.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||08/27/2013|
Was it John Wayne or Clark Gable who fired a director because he knew about his gay past? Probably both. I've heard rumors about both. They may not have been totally gay, but certainly bi when the situation called for it.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||08/27/2013|
Gable supposedly had George Cukor replaced with Victor Fleming as the director of Gone With the Wind because Cukor knew of Gable's casting couch climb.
Some sections of GWTW supposedly stand as having been directed by Cukor.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||08/28/2013|
Didn't he have sex with those boys he picked up in his clown suit before he killed them? That makes him gay, right?
|by Anonymous||reply 52||08/28/2013|
I heard he was such a flamboyant queen that the only way he could tone it down was develop that slow, deliberate way of speaking.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||08/28/2013|
"This is the stupidest thread I've ever seen on this website."
Oh -- there have been threads that have been more stupid. Expotentially more stupid...
|by Anonymous||reply 57||08/29/2013|
41,42,44, get OFF the gay gossip site, breeders.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||08/29/2013|
He always got me as a bisexual type. No doubt his Kinsey scale was near the center.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||08/29/2013|
Marion Morrison was a college football player when he was "discovered" by Hollywood. The whole "John Wayne" persona was fake. He ended up believing his own PR, as he got older, but the young Morrison was hardly some cowboy. He had wavy hair, and clearly knew he was good looking. ALL celebrities in those days bartered for parts with their parts. Even Clark Gable, who was the straightest of straight, let George Cukor blow him at the beginning of his career. That's the way it was. So whether they were straight, bi, or gay, they played the game.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||08/29/2013|
Nope, could NOT have had homosex in his younger years. No way, no how. See pic.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||08/29/2013|
Nothing gay here at all. Incredibly straight!
|by Anonymous||reply 62||08/29/2013|
Oh young Marion Morrison. His nickname was "little duke" because he never went anywhere without his beloved Airedale terrier.
His football career ended when he hurt himself bodysurfing.
He was "discovered" by silent film star Tom Mix, while hanging around the movie studios.
In 1930, director Raoul Walsh saw him moving some studio props around, and decided "little duke" was perfect to star in his film. (This was, presumably, apres blowjob). Then he went from picture to picture until he landed the job in Stagecoach.
The macho cowboy act was completely fake. He was a pharmacist's kid, upper middle class, and he was in a Freemason youth group.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||08/29/2013|
This is Tom Mix.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||08/29/2013|
Looking good at R62.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||08/30/2013|
He shure was purty.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||08/30/2013|
like any of you knew him
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/11/2014|
What I've read about John Wayne is that he had a thing for dark haired (female) beauties, many of whom were of Latin extraction.
Patricia Neal had noted that Wayne seemed to deliberately pick on men who by appearances came off as gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||04/13/2014|
S on a horse that many years,didn't give him the ,inventor of the mince walk,with a name like marion(his parents were nasty bastards
|by Anonymous||reply 69||10/26/2014|
Wow to that photo at R62. He was hot!
|by Anonymous||reply 70||10/26/2014|
A 17 year old Charleston Heston as he appeared in an early "Peer Gynt" rendition.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||10/26/2014|
Sorry....Charlton, not Charleston.
|by Anonymous||reply 72||10/26/2014|
I heard from an oldtime Hollywood queen that John Wayne and John Ford would drive down to San Diego to pick up sailors.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||10/26/2014|
I'm with R37 & R44
|by Anonymous||reply 74||10/26/2014|
If I were a betting man I'd bet yes.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||10/26/2014|
I'll tell ya one thing, he was NO Johnny Mack Brown!
|by Anonymous||reply 76||10/26/2014|
John Wayne is the one who knew for certain, and he isn't talking. Really, it is anyone's guess at this point.
But, to deny he could not have been gay or bi because he projected a masculine persona is foolish.
The post above that claims he didn't like or harassed gay men is interesting. If true, just remember those who yell names the loudest or most often end up being the gayest. Just reminding you.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||10/26/2014|
John Ford may have had feelings for the Duke, but they were not reciprocated beyond professional admiration.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||10/26/2014|
[quote]But, to deny he could not have been gay or bi because he projected a masculine persona is foolish.
Any examples of closeted gay men with similarly uber-musculine personas?
|by Anonymous||reply 79||10/26/2014|
I have heard and read the opposite about Clift and Wayne. I heard that they got along, and that Wayne liked Clift because he was a good actor.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||10/26/2014|
R77 Oh right, because homophobes really are often closet cases.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||10/26/2014|
79, get out of the house more often.
Go to any gay event.
Go to leather bdsm runs for some real good examples.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||10/26/2014|
r81, in my experience they sure are, at least the loudest, meanest ones.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||10/26/2014|
r79/r81 is surely a flyover frau or fundie.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||10/26/2014|
R82 I meant out of famous people.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||10/26/2014|
Guys who get their pussy and like it don't usually have a big issue with gay men. They're satiated, they're mellow and they don't really care.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||10/26/2014|
You can be in drag in many ways. For some guys it's the über-masculinity.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||10/26/2014|
Speaking of Marlene, didn't she desperately try to bed Wayne on their first film but he wouldn't give in?
|by Anonymous||reply 88||10/26/2014|
Wayne was big and imposing, but that walk and that voice don't particularly scream uber-masculine.
And I couldn't say one way or the other whether he was gay or not.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||10/26/2014|
No he wasn't very masculine and maybe that's why he tried to overcompensate to keep true to his tough-guy image.
|by Anonymous||reply 91||10/26/2014|
The photo of John Wayne in hot pants at R41 tells the story.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||10/27/2014|
Oops! That should be: The photo of John Wayne in hot pants at [R91] tells the story.
|by Anonymous||reply 93||10/27/2014|
LOL r76, you are a man after my cold, dead, pre-Code loving heart.
|by Anonymous||reply 94||10/27/2014|
I'm totally surprised that nobody has mentioned Darwin Porter's "Hollywood Babylon - It's Back" and the long. long story about John Wayne offing Nick Adams because Nick threatened to go public on their affair.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||10/27/2014|
The Duke, gay?
|by Anonymous||reply 97||10/27/2014|
I think many of you posters think that if you post the picture of him in hot pants enough it will retroactively make him gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||10/27/2014|
Get Wayne out of the saddle, and you've got problems.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||10/27/2014|
One of the few things I've learned here is that all movie stars are gay. All of them. Every single one of them. ESPECIALLY the married ones.
The other thing I've learned is that the gays aren't very bright. Gullible.
|by Anonymous||reply 100||10/27/2014|
NO idea but he would hate those rumors.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||10/27/2014|
Who taught you this, r100? As I have posted before, in the early 50's there were three exclusively straight big male stars...
|by Anonymous||reply 102||10/27/2014|
John Wayne! Are you gonna tell me he's a fag?!
|by Anonymous||reply 103||10/29/2014|
NEWSFLASH! There are indeed "straight-acting", macho men who are gay! Now, if John Wayne was or not, I don't know. ONly he could tell you that, and he is dead, so we will never know for sure.
Someone once told me when I first came out that I would see that there are MORE men who are attracted to men who are married and have families than those who are openly gay. I found this to be true. Time and space don't permit me to go into this right now, but yes, I did indeed find that to be true. I believe sexuality is on a continuum between gay and straight.
As for the haters, YES! the more openly hateful they are the more they turn out to be gay. Absolutely. The louder they yell F*&, the more they turn out to be gay.
A visit to any cruising ground late at night (remember them?) is/was always interesting. Amazing who turns out to be there! I am guessing today they cruise on-line.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||10/31/2014|
I've been crushing on his son Patrick Wayne for years.
|by Anonymous||reply 105||10/31/2014|
John Wayne was set to star in the original film version of The Birdcage.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||10/31/2014|
Gay, straight, bisexual, whatever.
The real question should rather be: Is/was so-and-so ambitious enough to use the casting couch (aka. sexual favors) to further his career?
Some people are still so hung up about sex and sexual identity that they can't wrap their heads around the idea of career driven / ambitious people doing whatever it takes to reach their ambitious goals.
|by Anonymous||reply 107||10/31/2014|
R55, why in the hell are you here?
|by Anonymous||reply 108||10/31/2014|
