AUSTENLAND with Keri Russell and Jennifer Coolidge. The trailer.

This could be fun.

I think this will be a big hit.

I saw the trailerfor this last night in the movie theater with a female friend of mine. She was agog and thought it looked adorable; I cringed and thought it looked horrible.

Jane Austen's novels were not about dreamy hunks--I don't get why Hollywood and chick-lit seem to think they were.

Reviews are dreadful; it's only at 33% at Rotten Tomatoes:

Won't be a "big hit". It's playing limited engagements, art houses.

by Anonymousreply 408/21/2013

This is an unusual pairing, but I will watch Keri in almost anything.

It is being produced by the author of the TWILIGHT novels, strangely enough.

I agree that it looks awful, which is a shame because I like both Russell and Coolidge.

JJ Feild is in it. My new fantasy boyfriend. Sigh.

Saw it on Virgin America today. There are some easy laughs from Coolidge, but the thing is kind of a mess - too insanely cartoony, embarassingly so. I did however love the Nelly "It's getting hot in here" thing - in the credits, too. JJ Feild is ok-looking.

I really enjoyed it, and JJ Feild is hot.

I spent the whole time watching this dreck thinking J J Field was Tom Hildeston. He's just a second rate version of him, apparently. This movie was genuinely embarrassing.

I just saw it and thought it was harmless fun. I love the actor who played the Colonel. He plays gay a lot. He was Bridget Jones's gay friend.

Jennifer Coolidge was a bit over the top but I love her.

A comedy about Jane Austen mania?? HOW AU COURANT!

by Anonymousreply 1211/02/2014

Jane Austen is not about hunks--it is true Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen were both hunky in wet shirts as Mr. Darcy in the 1996 and the 2005 adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, even so there is nothing in Jane Austen that says that character (or any of her male love interests) is necessarily a hunk.

I remain bewildered that so many people (and Hollywood) think Jane Austen is such a classic and beloved writer because she writes about hunks.

So what does Austen say about Darcy R13?
