Difference between Self Confidence and Narcissism

What is the difference between someone who is very self confident and someone who is extremely narcissistic?

How can you tell?

Can you share some examples?

Well, if you're worried about yourself, you can take this test. I got a 14 out of 40.

by Anonymousreply 108/01/2013

I got 6 out of 40.

by Anonymousreply 208/01/2013

OP here I got 4 out of 40

So I guess I'm not a narcissist.

But I don't have self confidence either. That is what I worry about. If I try to be more self confident, will that turn me into a narcissist.

Is this another sociopath thread?

by Anonymousreply 408/01/2013

I got 11/40

The self confident individual can focus on and think of others. They can also possess empathy.

I don't think it is hard to distinguish the differences. Narcissism is an inability to think of anyone but self, reflexively- Not just someone admiring themself in a mirror. Narcisism does not necessarily go hand in hand with self confidence.

In other words, they are two entirely different entities.

R4 I really hope so, love those threads.

So what's the difference between being a narcissist and being just plain selfish?

by Anonymousreply 808/01/2013

Confidence is Yes, thank you... Narcissism is Yes, I know...

by Anonymousreply 908/01/2013

I got 21 out of 40 and I could stand to be more confident

by Anonymousreply 1008/01/2013

They really aren't similar. Narcissist actually tend to lack self-confidence under their facade and have fragile egos that need constant validation.

Someone who is actually self-confident doesn't constantly seek external validation, they don't need it.

Really the concepts are polar opposites.

The difference between having self confidence and being arrogant is where a lot of folks go over the line.

by Anonymousreply 1208/01/2013

Bad test -- the options are not opposites of each other.

by Anonymousreply 1308/01/2013

I got 31/40.

Very low on the Vanity subscale, though.
