OJ Simpson granted parole on robbery charges, prison sentence shortened

OJ Simpson has been granted parole on certain charges relating to his 2008 convictions.

The former NFL star was jailed in 2008 on several charges including kidnapping, robbery, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.

He was sentenced to 9 to 33 years for attacking two memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2007.

Last week (July 25), Simpson appeared before the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners, asking for leniency in relation to his sentence.

Simpson said that he regretted his actions, and that he has proved to be a model inmate in prison. The board approved his parole request today (July 31).

However, Simpson will remain in prison for at least four more years, as he was convicted on multiple charges to be run consecutively.

"I just wish I never went to that room," the 66-year-old said last week, adding that he has made amends with the men he attacked.

In prison, Simpson has earned pennies each hour while working in the prison gym, and has umpired games in the yard.

Meanwhile, Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell is said to be considering whether to grant Simpson a new trial for an earlier release.

In May, Simpson's legal team argued that his trial lawyer Yale Galanter had a conflict of interest in the case.

If a trial is granted, prosecutors will decide whether to retry him, offer a plea deal, or release him early with credit for time served.
