"Harvey"? As in Weinstein? Why would Harvey Weinstein give a "big Oscar push" for another studio's picture?
|by Anonymous||reply 1||07/31/2013|
This movie does look really good. Amy Adams looks awesome. I hope they don't give her a 6th Oscar nomination just to have her lose again. That's rough.

Looks really good.
Love Amy Adams. I hope she wins for this.

That's looks really good. Lots of sexy time and disco dancing.
Harvey Weinstein didn't produce this movie though.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||07/31/2013|
It all looks so fakey-fake. Like a bunch of kids dressed up in their parents' clothes.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||07/31/2013|
I hate David O. Russell forever for driving Lily Tomlin mad.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||07/31/2013|
Oh God, I forgot he was that mental case who did I heart huckabee or whatever the fuck that was called - won't even bother looking it up.
He's a loon.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||07/31/2013|
He might be a loon, but he makes a good movie. I've enjoyed everything I've seen from him.
I hope Amy wins. She is the definition of due. I'm curious to see if Cooper can back up his nomination from last year with another good performance, or if he proves it to be a fluke.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||07/31/2013|
I think this movie kind of overlaps a little bit with Wolf on Wall Street. Even though I like American Hustle cast more I find the trailer for Wolf on Wall Street more interesting.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||07/31/2013|
Amy really shouldn't have been nominated for The Master. A waste of a good slot, she was totally incidental there.
She's not really a supporting actress either, but she can't seem to get the good lead roles. I suppose it's great to have those multiple noms, even if it's teasing. Can't do any harm.
The trailer for this is great but it also gives a lot away in its fast cuts and no dialogue. O. Russell is insane, but like James Cameron the end results are worth it (ish). Here he uses a bunch of actors he's worked with apart from Renner(?) so they can deal with his shit.
Not an expert on him. Loved Silver Linings Playbook, thought The Fighter was an overacted bore.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||07/31/2013|
Borrowing heavily from Casino and Goodfellas, at least so it appears in the trailer. A completely fresh, yet informed, take on the 1970's is now welcome, as this doesn't appear to offer one. O. Russell will one day, in a career reversal, play Adam West in an award-winning biopic.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||07/31/2013|
Love the cast (except Christian "The Only Expression I Can Emote Is Constipation" Bale), I'm so tired of these recreation of scandals. It's always about straight guys trying to prove who has the bigger cock. Boring.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||07/31/2013|
I hate "teaser" trailers. This isn't even the real trailer. It's not ready yet. Hollywood is devolving. I can't buy Cooper in a beard with curly hair. This isn't Harvey's pic, it is 26 year old Oracle scion lesbian/bi girl Megan Ellison. She basically bought her position in Hollywood but at least she's producing some good films -- just not this one.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||07/31/2013|
Megan Ellison has excellent taste. Maybe it isn't Scorcesesesque
|by Anonymous||reply 16||07/31/2013|
[quote]Megan Ellison has excellent taste.
So far she's backed up only proven directors: PT Anderson, K. Bigelow, D.O. Russell.
A monkey with money can do that.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||07/31/2013|
It looks like crap from this rough trailer, r7 is spot on. Scorsese lite. Bale can be good, but he's no DeNiro and Cooper sure as hell isn't Joe Pesci. And as much as I like Amy Adams and want to see her succeed, she is no Sharon Stone.
I'll wait until I see a spot with dialogue before passing further judgment.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||07/31/2013|
One more nomination in the same supporting-actress category, plus such a loss, and Amy Adams will become the Thelma Ritter of this generation.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||07/31/2013|
I think it looks awesome. They nailed the late 70s look. I'm interested in seeing the full theatrical trailer so I can get a grip on the story.
I could see this do very well awards-wise.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||07/31/2013|
[quote]I hope Amy wins. She is the definition of due...
I don't think so.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||07/31/2013|
Coops looks all sorts of greasy, grimy and sexy in this trailer.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||07/31/2013|
``I can't buy Cooper in a beard with curly hair``
Funny...I can`t buy him *with* a beard, curly hair or not
|by Anonymous||reply 23||07/31/2013|
R22 There is something about him grinding with Amy Adams and eating fried chicken with rollers in his hair that I find very attractive.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||07/31/2013|
Russell's been on a roll but his problem is his movies can devolve into hammy overacting with everyone yelling at each other (see the Fighter). The saving grace has been his characters always had some humanity even if they live squalid or troubled lives; from the looks of this clip everyone is a sleazy over-sexed criminal or conman. That’s a problem if Russell doesn’t use a lighter touch like he did in SLP. The sleaze combined with scenery chewing could turn people off (Lawrence’s popularity and cleavage aside).
|by Anonymous||reply 25||07/31/2013|
That is definitely how people looked in the 70s.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||07/31/2013|
What's the overall theme of the movie?
|by Anonymous||reply 27||07/31/2013|
It's about the ABSCAM financial scandal, R27. Google it.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||07/31/2013|
R28 - I know it takes place during ABSCAM, but what is the overall theme/message.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||07/31/2013|
Jesus, WHAT a cast! (pant, pant...) Won't know where to look/who to look at first!
|by Anonymous||reply 30||08/01/2013|
R27, how the fuck should we know, no one has seen the movie.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||08/01/2013|
I think Amy Adams has been really good in a lot of roles. Unfortunately, I found out she's Mormon so she lost a lot of respect I had for her.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||08/01/2013|
[quote]It all looks so fakey-fake. Like a bunch of kids dressed up in their parents' clothes.
I have too agree and Bale just looks like he's acting. Like he's trying to combine Pacino in "Dog Day Afternoon" and DeNiro in "Taxi Driver" with all the twitching.
Huge movie fan and in my entire life have never seen a director go on a show to promote a trailer for a picture that isn't opening for another six months. Don't really see the point.
Since he's the flavor of the week now, if Russell had a decent bone in his body he would write Lily Tomlin a kick ass role to make up the humiliation he thrust upon her. She would have been better than hambone Melissa Leo in "The Fighter".
|by Anonymous||reply 33||08/01/2013|
[quote]So far she's backed up only proven directors: PT Anderson, K. Bigelow, D.O. Russell.
A monkey with money can do that.
Yet no one else in Hollywood was willing to give PT Anderson money. She's filling a void that the corporate movie makers have left in their quest for the new $200 million toy and fast food tie in commercials.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||08/01/2013|
Louis C.K. is in this, too!
I just watched Flirting With Disaster on Netflix. Another great one. The only one of his films I didn't really enjoy was Three Kings.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||08/01/2013|
Ugh, r32 Amy Adams is a MORMON? I wish I didn't know that. She's one of my favorite actresses.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||08/01/2013|
Looks ridiculously over the top. I love Christian Bale but he is chewing some serious scenery in this trailer. I still don't get Bradley Cooper. Ditto Jeremy Renner. Amy Adams = meh. Jennifer Lawrence might be okay.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||08/01/2013|
Jennifer Lawrence looks amazing and is giving great attitude.
This will be Amy Adams' film, though. My only concern is she looks to be a Lead, in which case she has less of a shot at the Oscar. She really should have won for Junebug. And I would've given it to her over Anne for The Master too. She has a rare ability to play completely endearing and completely vile.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||08/01/2013|
Amy Adams is NOT a Mormon. She was raised as Mormon but quit at the age of 11.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||08/01/2013|
is this a "Goodfellas" for a retarded audience?
|by Anonymous||reply 40||08/01/2013|
Amy Adams has the best 70s hair in a contemporary film I've ever seen! They usually have actresses in the worst wigs...
|by Anonymous||reply 41||08/01/2013|
Jennifer Lawrence in this could turn me. Seriously.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||08/01/2013|
Jeremy Renner disco dancing?
|by Anonymous||reply 43||08/01/2013|
[quote]I'm curious to see if Cooper can back up his nomination from last year with another good performance, or if he proves it to be a fluke.
I respectfully disagree, R10. I didn't think the performance in SLP was all that either. IMHO he was the weak link in the cast and the Oscar nomination he received was a total waste of that slot, especially given the far superior performances by other actors in other films that were overlooked just to recognize Cooper.
Both he and the movie were horribly overrated.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||08/01/2013|
R44 I thought he was fantastic in SLP. In fact, I thought he was better than Jennifer Lawrence, who I didn't think deserved to win. I also thought he was great in The Place Beyond the Pines.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||08/01/2013|
watched the trailer and have to agree with some of the other posters that Christian Bale seem to be overacting going into cheesy from what i see in the trailer. Can barely taker Cooper serious in the trailer with that hair. But think Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams look beautiful in it. Hope their parts are good.
Overall I don't think David O'Russell is very good, I liked Silver Linings but I think it was overhyped, but Bradly Cooper did amazing in that role.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||08/01/2013|
I didn't think it was amazing, but I thought it was a deserved nomination. He definitely rode on the film's coattails, however. It was better than what Jackman turned in, but Hawkes should have been nominated before Cooper, Jackman, or Washington.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||08/01/2013|
Yes r47, the only two that belonged there were DDL and Phoenix. Hawkes was thought of as a shoo-in and even a threat to win. I hate the actor category, there's too much to choose from and they always fuck it up.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||08/01/2013|
R48, were you pleased with DDL's win? Or do you think it should have gone to Phoenix instead?
|by Anonymous||reply 49||08/01/2013|
I'm r47, not r48, but I personally preferred Phoenix. I wasn't upset by result, though. It's hard to begrudge DDL another win.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||08/01/2013|
Hmm... it's a toss up, r49. I hated Lincoln but loved The Master (the amazing first half anyway). Rather flawed genius than dull competence.
I probably would've preferred if they gave it to Phoenix, that was quite an out there performance that hasn't been seen for years. Though Hoffman is really the one who should've won there. Phoenix's constant tics and mannerisms weren't very Academy friendly but it's a shame as you won't see anything like that again.
As for DDL, it's hard to argue with and you can see why he got it... he created a legendary character out of nowhere without a template and footage to mimic like the rest of these type of performances and gave him flesh and blood. You really got a picture in your mind that it was Lincoln. He was always going to be the one who got 3 actor Oscars and even had a previous should've one in Gangs of New York which he was expected to win.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||08/01/2013|
@ If Bradley Cooper was the weak link than Lawrence winning was a joke. She was simply support to him.
This looks fake. Amy Looks good. Bradley looks mixed. Bale is....well at least he's smiling people. And Lawrence is trying too hard to prove she's a big player.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||08/01/2013|
I was going to say that Bradley looks like a mulatto in this movie. It looks good on him. Is it just me, or is he even wearing brown contact lenses?
|by Anonymous||reply 53||08/01/2013|
If Lawrence gives that same deep voice stoic bullshit again I'll be annoyed.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||08/01/2013|
It would be awesome of she has a high-pitched, flighty, bimbo-ish voice in this. It would really show versatility on her part.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||08/01/2013|
Don't count on it. But Cooper is kinda sexy.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||08/01/2013|
[quote]is this a "Goodfellas" for a retarded audience?
It reminds me more of Casino.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||08/01/2013|
R53 He's still got blue eyes. I think he's just supposed to look more Italian than he actually does. He's not in blackface.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||08/02/2013|

He was AWFUL and over the top in "Gangs Of New York" and was a VERY week year for "There Will Be Blood". As over the top as your ludicrous "he created a legendary character out of nowhere without a template and footage to mimic like the rest of these type of performances" Clearly you never saw this. The only difference, no one was asleep when it ended like the audience I saw "Lincoln" was that I attended.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||08/02/2013|
Sorry... was a VERY WEAK year for "There Will Be Blood".

That is how I felt as well, but you described it better than I could.

Is David O. Russell boning Jennifer Lawrence? That would explain a lot! She's too young for this and was too young for SLP.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||08/06/2013|
Eh. Woman have been playing parts they're too young for since the beginning of cinema.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||08/06/2013|

Second Oscar For Jennifer!
|by Anonymous||reply 66||08/06/2013|
She's a good actress but looks really young here. She's supposed to play Bale's wife and he looks like he's playing late 40s here, older heavy and bald. In fact all the other actors are late 30s/early 40s, she sticks out and not in a good way.
She plays the wife and Amy Adams the mistress, Adams is and looks 15+ years older than JL. On what planet would JL be the cheated wife?
|by Anonymous||reply 67||08/06/2013|
Calling it now. Amy and Sharon Stone will be duking it out for the Supporting Actress Oscar.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||08/06/2013|
What does Sharon Stone have coming out that would put her in the running?
|by Anonymous||reply 69||08/06/2013|
Stone is supposed to be getting decent reviews for Lovelace.
Actually Cameron Diaz may be in the running here too, for The Counselor. Supposed to have put on a badass performance.
